Classifieds Cartoons & More SECTION B Friday, January 13, 2017 C M Y K AYFS to kick-off its 8th Football Season in the territory tomorrow morning 1st youth football league on island continues to grow even stronger thru the years by T. Gasu Samoa News Sports Correspondent S C M Y K even years ago, the American Youth Football of Samoa (AYFS) program opened the opportunity on island to suit up our younger generation who were already trying out for high school football even though they were still at the elementary level of athletics. It is now in its 8th season and continues to answer the needs of our younger football players. Samoa News spoke to AYFS President Victor Avalos, about the upcoming 8th season ready to kick off tomorrow, Saturday morning. Avalos said, First and foremost I want to thank the good Lord above for basically giving us another year. We re going to be starting our eighth season, and we will have our opening ceremony tomorrow morning at the Veterans Memorial Stadium at 8a.m. we ll be kicking off our opening game at 9a.m. following the opening ceremony. He told Samoa News that it s been a good year this year, we re again able to put a league together and coordinate another football season for the kids I want to definitely thank our helpers and our coaches, and our parents for their support along with our board. The AYFS president added, It s a team effort putting together a program for the kids here in American Samoa. According to Avalos, the league will be bringing out six teams again this year. We have the AYFS 49ers, the AYFS Raiders, the AYFS Packers, which is a new team this year out of the Leone area, the AYFS Steelers, the AYFS Rams, who used to be called the AYFS Chargers, but they ve decided to come out as the Rams this year and of course, the AYFS Bears. 2 Page B2 samoa news, Friday, January 13, 2017 AYFS to kick-off its 8th Continued from page B1 This being their 8th season of football action, the AYFS program is staying faithful to their mission and goal from the start all for the kids as Avalos emphasized to Samoa News, Our focus and goal this year is similar to last year, and that s to sending these kids to San Diego. He said, AYFS has been here for 8 years and we ve made history we were the first youth football league here in American Samoa, noting they are now competing with the JPS Football League that had their debut season last year, utilizing the same age group of kids, even some of the kids that played in the AYFS league signed up and played in the JPS league, following the closing of AYFS 7th season. Avalos is ever proud to be the president of the first youth football program in the territory, saying, We were the first group to send the kids off island to Hawaii for 4 years; and we were the first to send kids all the way to [mainland] America for this age group. He told Samoa News, Our focus is to continue to teach these kids the basic fundamentals of football, we re a foundation of the sport of football we also emphasize the importance of education and it starts now. We ve done it in the past and we continue to make sure that our kids are even more embedded about pushing their grades right now. He said, We ll also teach them positive things like good character and giving them a chance to make new friends and that s basically our focus our motto is All About the Kids, it always has been. According to Avalos, their 8th season will introduce cheerleading and in order for teams to do that, they [the cheerleaders] have to go through the process as the players do they have to sign up and register for the program. We re trying to bring girls into this program, so we can eventually do the same for them and take them off island, because we know that they should have a chance to get a scholarship off island too. When asked if AYFS will again be taking another All-Star team off-island after the season, Avalos said a resounding, Yes, we will hold our local All-Star game, the AYFS Reds versus the AYFS Blue from there we ll get a team together to take off island. He added, Last year, we took the kids to the San Diego Gridiron Tournament, and in that tournament, there were teams from Nevada, Arizona, Texas, California, Hawai i and of course our locals, the AYFS Matai, and we re hoping to do that again this year. The AYFS president said he is proud that AYFS was able to shape the majority of the kids that are representing American Samoa in their All- Star Football Team that is currently in Hawai i to compete in the Junior Prep Sports (JPS) Paradise Classic II. Right now we have our high school football all-stars representing American Samoa in the JPS Paradise Classic in Hawaii and about 90 percent of those kids have already gone with us to Hawai i before, through AYFS assistance. He said, It s a great feeling to know that those kids are out there like Juliano Falaniko, Blessman Ta ala, Cornelius Aiava, Raemos Fano, Penei Pavihi and most of the stars on our all-star team other kids that started this program in the first couple of years have excelled to the top, kids like Frankie Luvu and Logan Tago, who both got scholarships and are playing football at the University of Washington, and Viane Moala, who is making a name for himself at the University of Hawai i with a football scholarship. Avalos concluded by thanking God for the opportunity to start the 8th season of AYFS to serve the youth of American Samoa, and said, We definitely want to also thank the Governor and Lt. Governor with special thanks to our sponsors, the parents, the coaches, the board and everyone who has helped make this 8th season possible. On behalf of AYFS organization, he invites the public to come out to their season opener tomorrow morning. He said, Come out and witness for yourselves the talent and the hard work that these kids have put into this level of football. You re welcome to come out and enjoy a full day of football at the stadium, we ll have some good snacks over there let s continue to support our youth in the sport of football, Avalos said.

samoa news, Friday, January 13, 2017 Page B3 Knicks beat Bulls with big games from Anthony, Rose, Noah NEW YORK (AP) To Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah, it didn t matter much that they were playing their former team. At this point, the New York Knicks just needed to beat somebody. Carmelo Anthony had 23 points, nine rebounds and six assists, Rose and Noah had big games against Chicago, and the Knicks beat the short-handed Bulls on Thursday night. Tonight s game was because it was the next game, Rose said. We were desperate to win and I m just happy that we got the win. Rose scored 17 points in his return to Madison Square Garden after skipping the last game here, and Noah finished with 12 points and 15 rebounds as the Knicks snapped a threegame losing streak. Rookie forward Mindaugas Kuzminskas had a season-high 19 points. The Knicks bounced back from a loss at the buzzer in Philadelphia on Wednesday to win for the first time this season on the second night of back-toback games. Dwyane Wade scored 22 for the Bulls, who were missing star swingman Jimmy Butler, Nikola Mirotic and Denzel Valentine, all because of illness. They dropped their third straight. Playing without starting forward Kristaps Porzingis, New York won for just the second time in 11 games, a muchneeded victory after the mystery surrounding Rose and then its second buzzer-beating loss of the month. I haven t been in situations like this too many times in my career, but I ve definitely been in situations where there s been adversity and I think that today a lot of guys showed what they were made of, Noah said. Rose went home to Chicago on Monday without telling the team, returned to practice the next day and said his absence was for family reasons. The Knicks fined him but put him back in the starting lineup and he has played well in both games since. Rose was cheered during pregame introductions and then helped the Knicks race to an 8-0 lead. They pulled away by limiting Chicago to 14 points in the third quarter. Butler and Mirotic both missed their second straight game. Valentine felt sick at the arena and was sent back to the hotel. We ve got three guys out. We don t have the luxury of missing key guys, Wade said. So hopefully Saturday, hopefully we don t have any more down. Hopefully Saturday we get at least one or two back. The Bulls ended up giving little-used, little-known rookie Paul Zipser his first career start at forward. He had a seasonhigh seven points in just his 11th appearance of the season. TIP-INS Bulls: Jerian Grant, traded to Chicago in the deal that brought Rose to New York, scored 14 points off the bench.... Chicago was 3 for 18 (16.7 percent) on 3-pointers. Knicks: The Knicks are 1-7 on the second night of backto-backs.... Porzingis missed three games recently with the Achilles problem, and coach Jeff Hornacek said the injury could have contributed to Porzingis being short on his jumpers Wednesday, including the airball that led to the 76ers winning shot. Hornacek said Porzingis had soreness and stiffness Thursday but there was no tear or sign of serious injury. ROSE S RESPONSE Rose said he didn t think much about how the crowd would greet him, saying he s been booed in Chicago, too. I m used to it and if they did boo me tonight it s no hard feelings, Rose said. I know this is sports and I know they re very passionate about their sports and like I said, I said sorry to my team, I apologized and that was something that will never happen again. ZIPSER S CHANCE Zipser had played in just one of the Bulls five games this month, 10 all season and his high game was three points. But coach Fred Hoiberg said when he told the forward from Germany s Bayern Munich that he would be starting, He looked me right in the eye and said, I ll be ready, Coach. UP NEXT Bulls: Host the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday. Chicago swept the series in for the seventh time in 10 seasons. Knicks: Visit Toronto on Sunday, trying to snap a fourgame losing streak to the Raptors. 4 Page B4 samoa news, Friday, January 13, 2017 Column: Greed wins out as Chargers abandon fans, flee to LA TIM DAHLBERG, AP Sports Columnist For once, Roger Goodell was right. Dean Spanos did everything he could. Everything he could to fleece the people of San Diego. Everything he could to alienate a fan base that remained far more loyal than he deserved until the bitter end. Everything he could to pretend he cared about those fans when all he really wanted was a new stadium and the extra millions it would bring. Yes, relocation is painful, as Goodell noted in his statement blessing the Chargers move to Los Angeles. Fortunately for Spanos, the pain of leaving San Diego will be lessened by the opportunity to sell personal seat licenses some 100 miles north. As for the pain felt by those left behind? So long suckers! The Chargers are moving to Los Angeles, which greeted the news Thursday with a collective yawn. No dancing in the streets, no long lines to buy jerseys with that spiffy new LA logo. No pep rally, either, though that was understandable. Might have been embarrassing if they held one and no one showed up. They did show up at Chargers headquarters in San Diego, but there wasn t much cheering going on. Instead, fans gathered to toss their Chargers jerseys and other team paraphernalia into a growing pile of trash to show their disgust over having their team of 56 years taken from them. Greed can be a funny thing. Blinded by it, Spanos and his minions were able to justify ripping a team from the fabric of a community for over a half-century Blinded by it, they re taking the Chargers into a city where they have no following and to a new stadium where they will play second fiddle to the Rams. A city that doesn t need or seemingly want a second NFL team. Indeed, the Raiders moving to LA would have made a lot more sense. They played there for years and have a ready-made fan base that really would have been dancing in the streets had their team been returning. The Chargers are, well, just the Chargers. They have no Super Bowl crowns, and no real pedigree to speak of. Nothing to get excited about in laid-back LA, even if their new logo looks suspiciously like the one featured on Dodger hats. The move is perplexing at best, especially if Spanos ends up having to pay his fellow owners a $650 million relocation fee to move. That might have been money the team could have put toward a new stadium in San Diego along with $300 million from the NFL had it not been so obsessed with getting taxpayers to fund it. But greed usually wins out. And the fact is the team Spanos owns will be far more valuable in Los Angeles than in the smaller market of San Diego. Then again, maybe Spanos just felt he had no choice. After all, how could any self-respecting NFL owner even show his face among fellow owners if he failed at the same kind of extortion that has served the league so well in city after city around the country. San Diego said no, with residents voting in November against a tax hike for a downtown stadium. City officials were never terribly eager to empty their wallets for the team, perhaps because the last time they bailed out the Chargers in the 1990s the deal required the city to buy any unsold tickets to games for 10 years. The money isn t there in Oakland, either, to pay for a new stadium for the Raiders. It is in Las Vegas, though, where tourists will shoulder $750 million in new taxes to lure the Raiders to a new stadium just off the glittering Strip. The NFL is in the midst of its biggest relocation shift, with three teams possibly leaving their longtime homes within a few years of each other. The league is doing it with its typical arrogance, seemingly without fear of alienating entire cities to the product. That kind of arrogance makes it easy to rationalize leaving a city of fans behind because they didn t cough up enough money for a glittering new stadium. The kind of arrogance displayed by announcing the move on Twitter, and unveiling a new logo surely in the works even as the Chargers left fans dangling on their intentions. Just like that, the Chargers left town, heading up Interstate 5 without even saying goodbye. Leaving behind a stadium and fans who just weren t good enough for the NFL. Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant (88) runs a drill during an indoor NFL football practice at the team s headquarters in Frisco, Texas, Wednesday, Jan. 11, The Cowboys face the Green Bay Packers in the NFL playoffs this Sunday. (AP Photo/LM Otero) Playoff history for Packers and Cowboys dates back decades GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) The Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers go way back, as in the 1967 NFL championship game played in such frigid conditions at Lambeau Field that it is known in league annals as the Ice Bowl. Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant has more recent memories, and they re painful for reasons other than the cold. Two of the league s marquee franchises share a postseason history that dates back five decades. They have met seven previous times in the playoffs, with Dallas holding a 4-3 edge going into the divisional round game on Sunday against the Packers at AT&T Stadium. While the teams may not be heated divisional rivals, their postseason meetings often leave an impression. I hope the Cowboys don t spoil it, or I ll be really (angry) if they do, said former Packers offensive lineman Jerry Kramer. He was one of the blockers for Hall of Famer Bart Starr s game-winning, 1-yard quarterback sneak with 13 seconds left in the fourth quarter of Green Bay s win in the Ice Bowl. Each team has made 32 postseason appearances, tied with the New York Giants for most in NFL history. Dallas and Green Bay have unique owners. For the Cowboys, owner Jerry Jones is partshowman, part-personnel executive and partspokesman. Dallas plays in a cavernous, modern stadium in a sprawling suburb. Green Bay plays in the league s smallest market. Lambeau Field is the league s longesttenured stadium, situated in the middle of a blue-collar neighborhood. It s the only publicly owned franchise in the NFL. Part of it is, I don t think the organizations could be more different. Their stadium and our stadium ours is iconic, an older stadium. Their (stadium) is glitzy, Packers president Mark Murphy said. But I have tremendous respect for the Dallas organization and Jerry. A look back at some postseason highlights of postseason between the teams: NEW YEAR S DAY: Fifty years ago on Jan. 1, the teams met in the 1966 NFL championship game, which took on new meaning since the winner would represent the league in the first Super Bowl against the AFL winner. Starr was 19 of 28 for 304 yards and four touchdown passes in the victory at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The Packers went on to beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. After joining the NFL as an expansion franchise in 1960, Dallas started a streak of 20 straight winning seasons in ICE BOWL: The temperature was minus-13 at kickoff on Dec. 31, 1967, when the Cowboys and Packers met at Lambeau in a classic NFL championship game. Cowboys equipment staff gave players a salve to rub on to keep warm, and put Saran Wrap around feet in an attempt to add another layer of warmth. There wasn t much of a rivalry then because the Cowboys were still relatively new to the league, Kramer said, though the seeds of a rivalry were planted. DALLAS DOMINATION: The Cowboys dominated in the mid-1990s with a star-studded lineup led by the Hall of Fame trio of Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin. Dallas hosted the Packers and another future Hall of Famer, quarterback Brett Favre, for three straight seasons, from , all Cowboys victories. Kramer remembers a weekend in which he attended one of those playoff games and got frustrated by the brash and confident Cowboys. His anger boiled over in a radio interview. There wasn t anything about any of them that I liked, Kramer recalled this week. He has become friends with former Dallas players, though his heart remains with the Packers. The loss in the 1995 NFC title game served as a learning experience for Green Bay. The Packers went on to beat New England in the Super Bowl in the 1996 season. Every year, you got better, you learned from your mistakes, former center Frank Winters said. From a motivational point... you tried to overcome those adversities, tried to learn from them and move forward. They didn t face the Cowboys in the playoffs that year after Dallas was knocked out by Carolina. The Packers returned to the Super Bowl the following season, losing to Denver. I think the signature win for the Packers was a loss, and that was the NFC championship in 1995 in Dallas, former Packers linebacker George Koonce said. That really prepared us and got us focused to really get us ready to win a championship. OVERTURNED CATCH: The Cowboys returned to Lambeau for a postseason game on Jan. 11, They left with a loss after Bryant s leaping, 31-yard catch to the Packers 1 on fourth-and-2 with 4 1/2 minutes left was overturned by officials. Cornerback Sam Shields had solid coverage. Coach Mike McCarthy saw otherwise and threw a challenge flag.

samoa news, Friday, January 13, 2017 Page B5 No. 20 Fighting Irish rally late to beat Miami CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) The Fighting Irish were at their best down the stretch once again, which is why they re still unbeaten in the Atlantic Coast Conference. V.J. Beachem sank the go-ahead basket and made the clinching steal as No. 20 Notre Dame rallied from a four-point deficit in the final 2 1/2 minutes to beat Miami on Thursday night. The Fighting Irish (15-2, 4-0) outscored Miami 10-1 down the stretch to earn their sixth straight victory. Their four league wins have been by a total of 18 points. Our fan base is all on heart medication, coach Mike Brey said. I loved our mental toughness again to finish. A sellout crowd failed to rattle the Irish, who snapped Miami s 21-game home winning streak. The Hurricanes (11-4, 1-2) led with 2:30 left before Notre Dame rallied. Obviously we have some experience there, Irish junior Steve Vasturia said. It s a testament guys not being afraid to step up and staying confident. We ve been able to get big defensive stops in all four of these wins; that has been the backbone. Beachem s reverse layup put the Fighting Irish ahead with 1:04 to go. After Ja Quan Newton made one of two free throws for Miami, Vasturia drove for a layup with 8 seconds remaining. Following a timeout, Beachem made a steal on the inbounds play, and Matt Farrell s two free throws iced the victory. Miami coach Jim Larranaga declined to blame his young team s inexperience on the fade at the finish. It s more of a factor of how cool, calm and collected Notre Dame is at the end of these games, Larranaga said. Notre Dame won despite shooting a season-low 37 percent, with Miami blocking a season-high 12 shots. We re really mentally tough, Brey said. We re not affected when a guy rejects one off the backboard and the crowd goes crazy. We bounce back and keep playing. Farrell led the Irish with 15 points and six assists, and Beachem had 13 points. Vasturia added 10 points and six assists. Miami senior Davon Reed tied a career high with 21 points but made a critical late turnover. We just didn t take care of the ball late in the game, Reed said. We didn t have poise down the stretch. The Hurricanes had 13 turnovers to only six for Notre Dame. BIG PICTURE The Fighting Irish outscored opponents 25-6 in the final 6:42 of their first three league games. Their other conference wins were by one, seven and five points. That s four games in a row where we ve made plays in game situations, Brey said. We believe that in those situations we re going to figure it out. It certainly is a little bit of a psychological advantage for us now. ROUGH NIGHT Bonzie Colson went 2 for 12 against the Hurricanes and was held to a season-low eight points, less than half his average. Their length and athletic ability really bothered him, Brey said. It is the first time someone has totally taken him away. Colson had 11 rebounds. RUNS The Irish led only briefly in the first half but outscored Miami 10-0 to begin the second half and take a lead. Colson started the run with a 3-pointer, and Martinas Geben finished it with a dunk. Notre Dame had its biggest lead at before the Hurricanes went on a 13-2 run to forge a tie and set the stage for the frantic finish. DIFFERENT LOOK The Hurricanes wore cream 1960s-style uniforms. DISMISSED Miami junior forward Michael Gilmore, a transfer from Virginia Commonwealth, was dismissed from the squad for failure to meet team expectations. He was to become eligible next season. UP NEXT Notre Dame will remain on the road to play at Virginia Tech on Saturday. That s the second of three consecutive away games for the Irish. Miami plays at Pittsburgh on Saturday, and its next three games are on the road. No time to mope around, Reed said. Notre Dame forward V.J. 6 Page B6 samoa news, Friday, January 13, 2017 Mentor vs. disciple doesn t provide a comfort zone BARRY WILNER, AP Pro Football Writer Tony Dungy learned a critical lesson during his Hall of Fame coaching career. When facing your mentor or someone you guided yourself take pride, enjoy the atmosphere. Then forget all about it. This weekend, Bill Belichick will work against his former offensive assistant, Bill O Brien, when the Patriots host the Texans in the divisional round. Dan Quinn, once Pete Carroll s assistant, will lead his Falcons against Carroll s Seahawks. Last Sunday, it was Giants coach Ben McAdoo against his former boss in Green Bay, Mike McCarthy. If you are not careful, you can go against tendency, says Dungy, who coached a bunch of times against one of his mentors, Denny Green. I would think, Denny knows this about me and so I better not do it. You can talk yourself out of doing what you do best and try to win with what you do second or third best and that doesn t work. You have to be smart about it. Everybody knows you in the league and you know everyone, but some people know you a little more. If you are not careful, you can definitely fall into not being yourself and not doing what you do. Denny always preached that to me: Go down with your best guns firing and I had to remind myself of that when playing against those guys. O Brien has had tougher assignments than taking his Texans to New England in the playoffs; he took over at Penn State after the scandal. But in the pros, trying to outfox Belichick in Foxborough is a monumental task. O Brien prefers to concentrate on and use everything he learned while with the Patriots rather than weigh how big the challenge is. When you re fortunate enough to work there as a coach, as a personnel guy or whatever your role is there, O Brien says, if you re smart, you take advantage of knowing that you re working in a great place and it is a little bit of a classroom, especially when you re working for him. There s a lot you can learn. You can learn about obviously X s and O s, but I think it goes a lot deeper than X s and O s. You learn about motivation. You learn about personnel evaluation. You learn about putting a roster together and putting a team together. Just a lot of different things that help you in your career... wherever you coach after that. Perhaps the more intriguing matchup of mentor vs. disciple is Carroll and Quinn. Both have highly successful defensive backgrounds. Both are what is often termed a players coach, with approaches far from the old-school totalitarianism often found in football. Yes, still. Even though he s the NFL s oldest coach, Carroll is more in tune with today s athlete than FILE - In this Aug. 11, 2011, file photo, New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O Brien, center, talks on the sidelines with quarterbacks Brian Hoyer (8) and Tom Brady (12) as head coach Bill Belichick, left, looks on during the second quarter of an NFL preseason football game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Foxborough, Mass. This weekend, Bill Belichick will work against his former offensive assistant, Bill O Brien, when the Patriots host the Texans in the divisional round. (AP Photo/Elise Amendola, File) most of his peers. He drew laughs when he stuck the needle into his former assistant leading up to Saturday s game. We always placed all the focus on Dan when he was here and we hope you will continue to do that there, he laughingly told Atlanta media. He really should be the center of the storm there. Just keep pumping him up. He s awesome. He s a great guy to work with. He s a great coach, great in relating to the players, and real fun to be around. That might sound like gratuitous coachspeak, except from Carroll it s genuine. Oddly, it s the Falcons offense that could be the difference maker against Seattle. I never intended to have Seattle East, I wanted to create our own Atlanta, Quinn says. Of course, I learned fantastic lessons from my time with Pete and (general manager John Schneider), and the players there, for sure. But one of the best pieces of advice was, Hey, Q, do it your own way and let it rip. That came from Pete, and I ve tried to really stay true to that. NFL coaching trees are such that it s rare when any game doesn t feature someone who worked for someone. Perhaps the ultimate mentor/student matchup came in the 2007 Super Bowl: Dungy vs. Lovie Smith. That also was the first time an African-American was the head coach in the NFL s title game times two. It was fulfilling yet awkward for Dungy, whose coaching disciples include Herm Edwards, Jim Caldwell, Mike Tomlin, Leslie Frazier and Smith, among others. There s the other side: It is really tough on you when you re the mentor, Dungy says. Of course you want your team to do well, but you have a strong feeling for those guys, too, and a sense of pride when they do well. That s why playing against Lovie in the Super Bowl was very difficult. It was a great sense of accomplishment to make the Super Bowl and for Lovie to make the Super Bowl, but you also know the kind of criticism the losing coach will get. Still, you are so happy and proud that both of you are there, but it is tough. You want those guys to do well overall. What you don t want is to overthink things. It can get to be, Is he thinking what I think he is thinking, Edwards says with a laugh. It gets more difficult in that sense. You can t put your players in positon to fail because of you having an inkling of what he wants to do. When it comes to situations in a football game, you have watched the guy who has mentored you, and you sort of know, in this situation, this is what coach likes to do. But you can t be changing things. It has to be that these are the things we do. O Brien has done well, winning two AFC South crowns despite quarterback issues. Quinn won the NFC South in his second season in charge. McAdoo ended the Giants four-season non-playoff run in his first year as head man. Now the challenge is catching up with their mentors trophies. Green Bay streak reaches 7 games in win over Wright State FILE - In this Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017, file photo, Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy walks the sidelines during the first half of an NFL football game against the Detroit Lions in Detroit. McCarthy has steered the Packers from a potentially disastrous start at 4-6, to a team that looks again like it could win the Super Bowl following a seven-game winning streak. (AP Photo/Duane Burleson, File) GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) Warren Jones and Charles Cooper combined for 35 points off the bench as Green Bay broke away after halftime to defeat Wright State on Thursday night, continuing on a seven-game winning streak. Jones a season-high 19 points on 5-of-6 shooting from 3-point range, Cooper shot 6 of 10 from the floor and collected nine rebounds as the Phoenix (11-6, 5-0) remain undefeated in Horizon League play. Khalil Small scored 11 points and grabbed a season-high eight rebounds. Kerem Kanter opened the second half with a 3 as the Phoenix stretched their lead to after an 11-2 run. Wright State only came as close as 10 points after that. Green Bay made a seasonhigh 14 3-pointers and outrebounded the Raiders Grant Benzinger led Wright State (11-7, 2-3) with 14 points. Benzinger stripped the ball twice from Cooper as the Raiders came within at halftime, holding Green Bay without a basket for the last four minutes.

samoa news, Friday, January 13, 2017 Page B7 LA Rams make Sean McVay youngest head coach in NFL history LOS ANGELES (AP) The Los Angeles Rams have made Sean McVay the youngest head coach in modern NFL history, and he appears to be getting some experienced help. The Rams on Thursday hired McVay, who turns 31 on Jan. 24. Several hours later, ESPN. com reported the Rams have finalized a deal with 69-year-old Wade Phillips to be their defensive coordinator, although the team declined to confirm it. McVay has been the Washington Redskins offensive coordinator since He will replace Jeff Fisher, who was fired 13 games into the Rams homecoming season in Los Angeles, and interim head coach John Fassel, who led the Rams to a 4-12 finish in their 13th consecutive non-winning season. The accomplishments and success that he has had in less than a decade in our league are impressive, Rams owner Stan Kroenke said in a statement. We are confident in his vision to make this team a consistent winner and we will all continue to work together to achieve our ultimate goal, bringing a Rams Super Bowl championship home to Los Angeles. McVay spent the past three seasons as Jay Gruden s offensive coordinator with the Redskins. He has been an assistant since 2010 in Washington, where he worked with Gruden and Bill Callahan to build a prolific offense led by quarterback Kirk Cousins. McVay s most important task is likely to be the transformation of No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff into a star after his rough rookie campaign behind a struggling offensive line. Really happy for Sean McVay! Cousins tweeted. The Rams made the eyecatching move on the same day that the Chargers announced their relocation to Los Angeles to share the Rams $2.6 billion stadium. The Chargers are still without a coach, and the Rams grabbed some of their headlines by snagging one of the most interesting names on the coaching market. I am incredibly honored by this opportunity, McVay said in a statement, thanking Kroenke and Rams chief operating officer Kevin Demoff. Collectively, we are committed to building a championship-caliber team, and I m excited to start that process and make our fans proud. McVay wowed the Rams top brass during two recent interviews, but he is an unorthodox choice for the franchise, which hasn t taken many extraordinary risks during Kroenke s tenure. While McVay is respected as an up-and-coming NFL mind, he has understandably meager experience, including none as a head coach at any level of football. Lane Kiffin was 31 years old when the Oakland Raiders hired him in January That hire didn t work out so well, but perhaps risks are in order to snap the Rams out of their 12-year playoff drought. They ve made the playoffs just four times in the last 27 years, all during a five-year span in St. Louis from , and they haven t had a winning record in Los Angeles since Los Angeles has the NFL s youngest roster, but McVay is still younger than Rams defensive linemen William Hayes. McVay doesn t inherit an enormous amount of elite talent beyond Pro Bowl defensive lineman Aaron Donald and other topflight 2x4 PAGE 2x6 PAGE 1/4 PAGE defensive players, but the Rams are eager to build a winning team heading into their new stadium in Inglewood, which they will share with the Chargers beginning in He s brought a lot to this football team, as far as offensively, and done a good job calling plays and utilizing the people that we have, Gruden said recently. McVay is widely expected to assemble a veteran staff around him, and the Rams were linked from the start of McVay s candidacy to Phillips. He was out of contract after leading the Denver Broncos Super Bowlwinning unit last season, and the Rams outmaneuvered other suitors to nab him. 11 samoa news, Friday, January 13, 2017 Page B11 Justin Thomas hits his ball out of a green side bunker on the 10th green during the first round of the Sony Open golf tournament, Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017, in Honolulu. (AP Photo/Marco Garcia) Fresh off a victory, Justin Thomas joins the 59 club HONOLULU (AP) Staring over the top of a bunker on his final hole, the prudent play for Justin Thomas might have been to make sure he got out of the sand and avoided a big number. But then, Thomas didn t care about a big number. It was about golf s magic number. This isn t a time for me to lay it up, Thomas said Thursday at the Sony Open. He hit a 5-iron so clean and so high that it carried 207 yards into a light Pacific breeze to 15 feet on the par-5 ninth hole at Waialae Country Club. Thomas poured in the eagle putt for an 11-under 59, becoming the seventh player to post a sub-60 round in PGA Tour history. For a brief moment, he reacted as if it were little more than the perfect finish to a great opening round. He stretched out his putter that was still in his left hand, smiled and punched the air with his right fist. Only when he looked over at Jordan Spieth and Daniel Berger, the two witnesses to a 59 that Thomas made look easy, did the sense of history start to hit him. Berger thrust his arm in the air. Spieth, his best friend in golf since they were 13, crouched as the ball neared the cup and delivered a left-handed fist pump as both raced over to congratulate him. I think I got more excited from seeing them get excited than I did my putt going in, Thomas said. I thought about it going up to the green. I m like, If I make it, what am I going to do? It s not like winning a tournament. You have three days left to try to play well. So I didn t really know how to react. I never had a putt on the last hole on a Thursday mean that much. to shoot 59, he said. Jim Furyk was the last player with a sub-60 round when he closed with a record 58 at the Travelers Championship last summer. Furyk also had a 59 in 2013 at the BMW Championship, joining the exclusive group that includes Al Geiberger (1977 Memphis Classic), Chip Beck (1991 Las Vegas Invitational), David Duval (1999 Bob Hope Classic), Paul Goydos (2010 John Deere Classic) and Stuart Appleby (2010 Greenbrier Classic). This was special because he made it look so easy. He began by pitching in for eagle from 35 yards. Thomas never hit more than a 7-iron into the par 4s at Waialae on a perfect day for scoring very little breeze, fast fairways and soft greens. That 7-iron was chipped under the trees and into a bunker on No. 8 when he was trying to save par. His only bogey came on his second hole, the par-3 11th, when his tee shot went into a bunker and he missed an 18-foot par putt. Duval was the only other player to shoot 59 with an eagle on the last hole. Furyk at Conway Farms is the only other player to shoot 59 with a bogey. Spieth was more nervous than Thomas and far more demonstrative. Thomas had a 30-foot birdie putt on No. 7 that looked good even when it was inches from the cup until burning the edge. Spieth clutched the back of his neck and was still asking how the putt didn t fall when he walked onto the next tee. He was talking to himself, of course. He gave Thomas his space. It s like sitting on the bench with a teammate throwing a perfect game, Spieth said. It was awesome. What an awe-

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): A change in the way or where you live will encourage you to lower your overhead. Living within your means will ease your stress and encourage personal alterations to your lifestyle. A creative idea will encourage a joint venture. Love is highlighted. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Put more time into important relationships. Make plans to engage in functions that can make a positive difference to your community or environment. Make choices based on what you want to see happen, not what someone else wants. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Keep an open mind when dealing with emotional matters that have the potential to ruin your day. Stay focused on creative endeavors and improvements at home or work that will make your life easier. Self-reflection is favored. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): A personal investment will pay off. Purchasing a home or something with the potential to grow in value is favored. Relying on secondhand information will be costly. Do your own research and you will get the best deal. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Don t be afraid to do things differently. You ll surprise someone with your insight. Pay close attention to your relationships. A thoughtful gesture will bring a favorable response and an offer that will help you excel. Personal improvements will lead to compliments. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Put in a full day and you will accomplish what you set out to do. The personal changes you make will have an impact on the way others perceive you. Put your own unique spin on whatever you pursue. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Don t let an emotional incident set you back. Stay focused on what and who is important to you, and you will avoid getting into a no-win situation that will ruin your mood as well as any plans you have. Birthday Baby: You are aggressive, hardworking and astute. You are passionate and resourceful. Dear Abby by Abigail Van Buren HIGH SCHOOL FRIEND TURNED ENEMY CONTINUES HER ATTACKS DEAR ABBY: I need your help in dealing with an old frenemy. Jenny and I were friends in high school, but she constantly berated me and accused me of taking advantage of her. She would make herself feel better by putting me down. After she went away to college, she got pregnant by a non-boyfriend. When she had an abortion, she swore me to secrecy because she didn t tell the father. Shortly thereafter, he came to me and tricked me into telling him. To this day, Jenny still blames me and says I was out to get her and ruin her life. Jenny spread rumors about me around our group of friends, on the internet, and told my mom horrible lies about me. She even threatened a lawsuit. Ten years later, she still pops up out of the blue to attack me. A year ago, she sent me a message saying she wished I had died in a tornado that struck my area. She sends taunts about an old boyfriend of mine who got married and had a kid. I never respond because that s what she wants. She pops up at the worst times and makes me feel worse. How should I deal with her? -- AT A BOILING POINT IN TENNESSEE DEAR BOILING: Continue to ignore this troubled woman. Block her anywhere you can, and delete any messages that leak through so you won t have to see them. If you have mutual friends who don t know the whole story, you should have enlightened them years ago -- and the same goes for your mother. Jenny appears to have serious issues. She isn t a frenemy. She is strictly bad news, so recognize it and move on. DEAR ABBY: While preparing a letter at work, I noticed that it was going to be mailed to a married lesbian couple. Typically, the correct way to address an envelope to a woman would be to Ms., Miss or Mrs. and to a male it s either Mr. or Master, depending upon his age. What s the proper way to address a gay couple? Is M/M still used in place of Mr. and Mr. and Mrs. and Mrs.? -- PROPER IN ILLINOIS DEAR PROPER: According to Steven Petrow s Complete Gay and Lesbian Manners, the correct way to address the envelopes of married gay and lesbian couples should be (in alphabetical order): Mr. Bradley Burch and Mr. Mark Foster Ms. Cecelia Carter and Ms. Diane Grant Or, if the couple shares the same last name: Mr. Bradley and Mr. Mark Burch Ms. Cecelia and Ms. Diane Carter DEAR ABBY: Now that I m older, I often find it hard to remember all the names and amounts of my prescriptions when I visit my various doctors. To help myself, I now carry in my wallet a small copy of a spreadsheet listing all my medication information. That way, I can give accurate details to the physician. I d like to pass my solution on to other readers who may have the same need to be precise and up-to-date when visiting the doctor. -- IN GOOD HEALTH IN AUSTIN DEAR IN GOOD HEALTH: That s a suggestion worth sharing. And while you are at it, you should also list for your doctor any vitamins, supplements and over-the-counter meds you take on a regular basis. This information can also be stored in your smartphone, if you have one.
