The Seoul entral District ourt dismissed ang s appeal of a suspended two-year prison sentence over charges of fleeing the scene after crashing a car into the guardrail while driving drunk, a court official said. The court official didn t want to be named, citing office rules. ang had sought to lower the punishment to a fine. His lawyers have called the suspended prison term issued in arch as a potential death sentence to his career, blaming it for visa issues that have prevented him from rejoining the Pirates. Bergman pitched into the eighth inning Wednesday night, holding the Oakland Athletics to two hits with a career-high nine strikeouts in Seattle s 4-0 win. It was the first time in his career Bergman (1-1) had reached the eighth inning in a start, and his strikeout total tied James Paxton for the most in a game by a ariners pitcher this year. He held Oakland without a hit until the fifth and earned his first win since ay 5, 2016, when he was a member of the Rockies. It was his first win as a starter since Sept. 21, After the game, Bergman said the strikeouts, more than anything, made him realize this was a special night. If I strike out five or six in a game it feels like 10. It s not something I normally do, Bergman said. It felt like a lot tonight. It was a good night. Bergman s start gave the ariners bullpen a muchneeded rest. Seattle has already used nine starters this season, tied for the league high, and the bullpen has been taxed recently. We talked before the game what we needed to do to give our bullpen a breather, ariners manager Scott Servais said. I think it was only the second time our starters got us into the eighth inning. It s been a while. Bergman, who was making his 17th start in 58 career appearances, joined the ariners when he was selected from Triple-A Tacoma on ay 7. ATLANTA (AP) Several high-profile failures have plagued Atlanta s reputation on a national stage over the years: unpreparedness for ice and snow storms, a recent highway collapse and subsequent shutdown from a fire, and chronic traffic and public transportation woes. Now, the city s new $1.5 billion stadium touted as a state-of-the-art facility that can help transform downtown is facing construction setbacks with its key feature, a retractable roof that will open and close like a camera lens. Stadium officials gave The Associated Press a recent tour - the first granted to any news outlet - of ercedes-benz Stadium. Even though it s behind schedule, officials and some residents hope the stadium can turn around Atlanta s history of public misfortunes in infrastructure and projects. It will be home to the Atlanta Falcons and United, the city s professional football and soccer teams. It will also host SE championship football games for the next 11 years along with the ollege Football Playoff National hampionship next year, 2019 s Super Bowl and the NAA men s Final Four in The stadium was originally set to open in arch, but that s been pushed back three times: first to June 1, then July 30, and now early August. Stadium general manager Scott Jenkins says that will be in time for the Falcons to host the Arizona ardinals in the first preseason game at home on Aug. 26. The building is more than 90 percent done, Jenkins said. The city committed to providing $200 million from hotel tax revenue, with the team picking up the rest. Rapper and Atlanta native T.I. also took the tour, along with his 12-year-old son. T.I. says the stadium could help breathe new life into the city, and he was amazed by the architecture, the interior design, and the intricate details of artwork and LED screens. Here are some of the stadium s key features: THE ROOF The challenge with the retractable roof has been installing the eight triangular steel petals that would enable it to retract and open like a camera lens. Water-tight seals are being installed on the petals, then it ll take eight weeks to place fluorine-based plastic (ETFE) on them, a spokeswoman said. In early June, workers will bring the petals together for proper alignment with the help of two gigantic crawler cranes. THE FRONT PORH This area is just outside the stadium s doors, with food trucks, live music and a fan vehicle experience on game days. A huge stainless steel sculpture of a falcon 73,000 pounds and with a 64-foot wingspan is perched on a bronzecolored football. THE BAARD After the Falcons former home the Georgia Dome is demolished at the end of summer, team owner Arthur Blank wants to replace the 24-year-old stadium with a 13-acre park. The greenspace would be used on game days as a tailgating area and parking lot for about 850 cars, according to ike Gomes, who s in charge of fan experience at the Arthur. Blank Group. Gomes said the area will host concerts and festivals: We don t want this to be just blacktop asphalt for 365 days. A 35-foot high mirrored sculpture of a soccer ball that will sit by the north entrance can be viewed from the greenspace area. VIDEO BOARDS The largest is the 360- degree, 63,000-square-foot halo board named for its shape. It will sit high in the stadium, showing live game play, replays, and images of players during breaks. Work to build the halo will continue through July. Also, a 100-foot-tall video board will function as a noise meter and advertise products officials compare it to the massive Times Square digital screens in New ork. SEATING Stadium seats will come in at 21 inches wide, compared with 19 at the Georgia Dome. Officials say this will make fans more comfortable. It s been a whirlwind month for Staley after her Gamecocks won their first national championship. There has been the WNBA draft, where she had three players taken in the first round. There s also been trips to ESPN, New ork and London. (AP Photo/Sean Rayford, File) Dawn Staley has been on whirlwind tour since winning title NEW OR (AP) It s been a whirlwind few weeks for South arolina coach Dawn Staley since her Gamecocks won their first national championship. She s been honored at the South arolina State House and in her of hometown Philadelphia. Now she s in London for a few days. Staley was also in New ork last month to see three of her players get taken in the first round of the WNBA draft. When she s not been traveling, Staley is easy to find on South arolina s campus. She s turned up at many of the school s sporting events, cheering on the softball and track teams. I want to share the moment with as many people as possible, Staley said Tuesday before being honored by the New ork Athletic lub. It s easy to do stuff on campus since we re right there. I don t mind sharing our championship spirit with everyone else going into postseason play. While in New ork, she walked around the city, getting stopped by people who congratulated her on her title. Even with all the praise, there are times Staley can t fathom that her team won a championship after she came so close as a player at Virginia a few times. Some days you have to remind yourself that we won a national championship. Sometimes you can t believe it, she said. ou walk outside and see other people and they make you reflect on it and re-live it. It s a good feeling. I don t want to walk through life without remembering it and feeling it. If she ever does need a reminder, she just has to look down. Ever present around Staley s neck, when she s been in South arolina, has been her favorite new piece of jewelry the championship net from Dallas. She affectionately calls it netlace. She doesn t bring it on the road with her out of fear of it getting lost or damaged. Staley did take a piece of it and put it in her wallet to replace the one that arolyn Peck gave her a few years ago. Peck was the first African-American coach to win a national championship and had given Staley, the second to achieve that feat, a piece of that net she won while coaching Purdue. I got a chance to return it to arolyn and I have a piece of our net in my wallet now, Staley said. We talked about who that next coach is going to be to give it to. One place that Staley hasn t been yet is the White House. She has said since winning the title that she s hoping for an invite for her team. National champions go to the White House. I m going, Staley said. ou don t have to believe in everything President Trump says and does, but I do believe in going to the White House when you re a national champion. It s not him, it s what it stands for. Staley visited with former South arolina governor Nikki Haley when she was in New ork to accept the Winged Foot Award for winning the basketball championship. Haley is now the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. The two have been friends for a while. She asked me when we re going to the White House and was like, ou got to go.
