The Warrior Club Award was reinstated this year after a five-year absence and this year s recipient was linebacker Jeremiah Pritchard for earning the most helmet stickers. The Ben Yee Most Inspirational Award winner was defensive lineman Kalepo Naotala, who suffered a spinal cord injury this summer prior to the start of fall camp. For a list of all the winners, see page 1. SINGLE-SEASON LEADER Running back Diocemy Saint Juste broke a 25-year old mark by setting the program s singleseason rushing record. He surpassed Travis Sims record of 1,498 yards by rushing for 1,510 yards. He also eclipsed Sims yards per game mark with a average and set the single-season rushing attempts mark previously held by Michael Carter in Saint Juste finished with 282 attempts on the season. AMONG THE NATION S BEST Diocemy Saint Juste s average of yards per game ranked eighth nationally while his 1,510 rushing yards was 10th. The last time a UH player finished in the top 35 nationally was Travis Sims, who was sixth in 1992 (124.8 ypg). In addition, Saint Juste finished 15th in all-purpose yards, averaging yards per game. CAREER RUSHER Diocemy Saint Juste finished No. 2 on the school s career rushing list with 3,102 yards, joining only leader Gary Allen (3,451) as the only players in school history to top 3,000 rushing yards. Saint Juste s 3,781 career all-purpose yards is No. 7 all-time. Saint Juste also became the first UH player to eclipse 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons. He and Allen (1979 and 81) are the only players with multiple 1,000-yard seasons. In addition, this season marks the third consecutive year UH has a 1,000-yard rusher (Paul Harris, 2015), a first in program history. BREAKING 100 Diocemy Saint Juste made a habit of rushing for 100 yards or more in a game. He had eight 100-yard games in 2017 and 10 in his last 14 contests dating back to He just missed tying the single-season school record for 100-yard games which is nine by Travis Sims in Saint Juste also had 13 career 100-yard games which is second all-time behind Gary Allen (15). SELECT COMPANY Diocemy Saint Juste s is one of only three FBS players with at least three 200-yard rushing games in 2017, along with Wisconsin s Jonathan Taylor (3) and SDSU s Rashaad Penny (4). Saint Juste s 241 yards against Nevada was the most for a UH player since Alex Green rushed for a school-record 327 yards at New Mexico State in The first player in school history to log multiple 200-yard games, Saint Juste was one of five current FBS players with at least four career 200- yard games joining SDSU s Rashaad Penny, Old Dominion s Ray Larwry, New Mexico State s Larry Rose III, and Florida Atlantic s Devin Singletary. Saint Juste has four of UH s six 200+ games in the last 20 years. HOME TURF Over the last two seasons, Diocemy Saint Juste rushed for 1,431 yards at Aloha Stadium, with an average of yards per game. He topped 100- yards in six of 12 games, including three 200-yard performances. His total ranked seventh in FBS among all rushers at their home stadium while his average of yards is second behind Tulsa s D Angelo Brewer (133.0). RUNNING WITH THE BOWS UH s average of rushing yards per game is the highest by a Hawai i team since 1995 (224.0 ypg). Last season, the Warriors averaged yards per game. UH s 299 rushing yards versus Western Carolina was its fifth 299+ performance since Two of those 299+ totals have come in the last two years under Nick Rolovich, including last season s 344-yard outburst against Nevada. Since 2010, UH has 22, 200+ rushing games with nine in the last two years alone including four this season. NON-WINNING SEASONS UH is assured of a non-winning season for the seventh consecutive year and ninth time in the last 10 years. In the last decade, UH recorded its seventh losing season with 7-7 marks in 2008 and 2016 and a 10-4 campaign in THE SOPHOMORE JINX Nick Rolovich could not avoid the fate that each of his three predecessors experienced, suffering a losing season in his second season. Rolovich, who guided UH to a 7-7 mark and Hawai i Bowl appearance in his inaugural season, was an assistant under Greg McMackin and a quarterback under June Jones. Like Rolovich, both coaches led their team to a bowl game in their first seasons, but suffered losing records the next year. Norm Chow went 3-9 in his first year and 1-11 in year two. Coach Year 1 Year 2 Win Diff Nick Rolovich Norm Chow Greg McMackin June Jones MW S BEST Diocemy Saint Juste had three of the MW s top 10 rushing games this season. His 241 yards versus Nevada was No. 3 while his 202 yards against San José State and Western Carolina were tied for No. 8. With 3,102 career yards, he was also the MW s third-leading active rusher, trailing San Diego State s Rashaad Penny (3,656) and Colorado State s Dalyn Dawkins (3,185). MISSING URSUA UH finished the season by losing its last five games since slot receiver John Ursua suffered a season-ending injury against San José State. At the time, Ursua was leading the nation at receiving yards per game and was No. 2 in receptions per game (9.3). If he stayed healthy and continued that pace, both of those numbers would have led the nation. Since his injury, the UH offense has seen a drop in productivity, averaging 14.2 points and total yards per game. BIG-PLAY BOWS John Ursua s injury also took a toll on UH s bigplay ability. Hawai i produced only 14 explosive plays (20+ plays) in the last six games combined, compared to 35 explosives in the first six games. In the last three games, UH had four explosive plays, three coming against BYU. While in the lineup Ursua led the way with 10 explosives until his injury early in the San José State game. Safety Trayvon Henderson recorded the team s longest play of the season with an 89-yard TD return off a blocked kick. Dylan Collie led the team with 13 explosive plays. SLOW STARTS The Warriors either trailed or were tied after the first quarter in 10 of 12 games this season which resulted in a 2-8 mark. In two seasons under Nick Rolovich, UH has trailed or were tied after the first quarter in 22 of 26 games with a 7-15 record. In contrast, UH is a perfect 7-0 when leading at the half under Rolovich. ANCHOR OF DEFENSE Junior Jahlani Tavai led the UH defense this season with nine games of double-digit tackles and finished the season ranked 10th nationally with 124 total tackles (66 solo). The native of Inglewood, Calif., who was also among the nation s top tacklers in 2016, was second in the MW with an average of 10.3 tackles per game. He also ranked in the MW s Top 10 in sacks (7th) and tackles for loss (10th). One of five finalists for the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year, Tavai was also on the watch lists for the Chuck Bednarik and Bronco Nagurski awards given to the nation s top defensive player Hawai i Football Weekly Release 2 HawaiiAthletics.com

6 COACHING STAFF NICK ROLOVICH Head Coach, 2nd Season Overall Record: MW Record: Former Warrior quarterback Nick Rolovich completed his second season as the program s head coach in One year after he led the Warriors to a 7-7 record and Hawai i Bowl championship, UH struggled in Year 2 of the Rolovich era. Hawai i lost eight of its final nine games to conclude with a 3-9 mark. Rolovich sparked a revival of the Warrior football program in 2016 as his Live Aloha, Play Warrior and Pride Rock slogans, which echoed throughout his introductory press conference, were the foundation of his inaugural season. In addition, his witty theatrics helped promote the program off the field through numerous ESPN SportsCenter Top Plays and viral videos across social media. He also reenergized a fan base, including the alumni with the help of three of his former UH teammates on the coaching staff. Most importantly, the Warriors won on the field finishing with seven wins capped by a victory over Middle Tennessee in the Hawai i Bowl, while snapping a five-year losing drought. When he took over the program as the fifth-youngest head coach in NCAA Division I FBS at the age of 37 after a four-year stint as Nevada s offensive coordinator, Rolovich promised a refined offense and he came through in the form of a 1,000-yard rusher and a 1,000-yard receiver for just the second time in program history. Also in 2016, the Warriors won three road games and finished runnerup in the West Division of the Mountain West, its highest finish since joining the league in Rolovich became the 23rd head coach for the COACHING STAFF PERSONAL Hometown: Novato, Calif. Rainbow Warrior program when he was hired in December Regarded as one of the top offensive minds in the country, Rolovich has proven an accomplished play-caller in operating the Run and Shoot, as well as the Pistol offense. While the offensive coordinator at Nevada from , the Wolf Pack offense ranked as high as eighth nationally in total offense, while making three bowl games. Meanwhile, Rolovich s first coaching stint at UH was wildly productive from , directing one of the top passing offenses in the nation. He was the quarterbacks coach all four seasons and spent the final two years as the Warriors offensive coordinator. in 2010, Hawai i led the nation in passing offense (394.3 ypg) and finished sixth in total offense (500.6 ypg). Rolovich was a two-year letterwinner at quarterback for Hawai i from , starting the bulk of the 2001 season and leading the team to an 8-1 record as a starter. He passed for 4,176 career yards and 40 touchdowns and still holds six school passing records. As a senior that season, he ranked 10th nationally in passing efficiency with a rating and broke 19 school passing and eight total offense records. Of the 22 HCs, 13 were QBs. Rolovich is also the 10th youngest head coach in FBS. 4 UH boasts four former Warriors on its full-time coaching staff; Rolovich, Brian Smith (OC/RB), Craig Stuzmann (QB) and Abe Elimimian (DB). All four were teammates on the 2001 squad that finished 9-3. Rolovich (QB), Smith (C), and Stutzmann (WR) were senior starters on offense, while Elimimian was a redshirt freshman who started six games at cornerback. 4 Rolovich enjoyed a six-year pro football career before going into coaching. He played two years in the Arena Football League and is one of seven current FBS head coaches to play in the AFL - Bret Bielema (Arkansas), Jumbo Fischer (Florida St), Justin Fuente (Virginia Tech), Scotty Montgomery (East Carolina), Tim Lester (Western Michigan), and Mike Neu (Ball St). 4At 24 years, Sean Duggan is the youngest assistant coach in the FBS. Duggan finished his playing career in 2014 at Boston College before serving as a defensive graduate assistant. 4Special teams coordinator Mayur Chaudhari is the son-in-law of Dick Tomey, former head coach at Hawai i, Arizona, and San José State. Chaudhari served as a graduate assistant at San José State under Tomey, coaching special teams, the secondary and linebackers. 4Offensive line coach Chris Naeole left the coaching staff after the team s fifth game of the season. Naeole spent four-plus seasons with UH on both Norm Chow and Nick Rolovich s staffs. He was the interim head coach for the final four games of the 2015 season. 4 After spending 2016 as UH s defensive line coach, Legi Suiaunoa takes over as defensive coordinator this season. It will be his second stint as defensive coordinator and first on the FBS level after serving at the same capacity at Eastern Oregon in Wide receivers coach Kefense Hynson has served as an offensive coordinator at three different schools, including Montana, where he coached alongside current UH defensive coordinator Legi Suiaunoa. 4 Jacob Yoro, the newest member of the staff, is one of two Hawai i natives on staff along with Craig Stutzmann.
