The Warriors competed in 10 tournaments during the fall and spring seasons, which was head coach Ronn Miyashiro s 13th year as the Warriors skipper. Prior to the spring season, freshman David Saka secured a spot in the PGA s Sony Open in Hawai i after winning a qualifying tournament. It marked the second straight year that a UH golfer participated in the PGA s first full-field tournament of the season after T.J. Kua qualified in Saka missed the cut after shooting rounds of 71 and 77 for a 148 total. The Warriors opened the spring season in Waikoloa, Hawai i for the Ameri Ari Invitational, the first of seven tournaments during the spring. Considered by Golf World as the second toughest tournament during the spring season, the Ameri Ari Invitational featured three of the top five schools in the Golf World/Nike Golf coaches poll, including top-ranked Oklahoma State, and eight of the Top 25. UH finished 18th while Kua shot 6-under 210, which included all three rounds under par, to tie for 14th place. For his effort, Kua was selected as the WAC s Golfer of the Week. The Lihue, Kaua i native shot a season-low 69 in the first round and recorded 15 birdies during the tournament s 54 holes while finishing seven strokes back of the three co-champions. Two weeks later, Hawai i began a stretch of four tournaments in four weeks when it hosted the John A. Burns Intercollegiate. The tournament was held at the Turtle Bay Resort for the first time in its 35 years. UH field two teams with its A team placing ninth and its B team taking 17th. Kua was again the team s top finisher shooting 4-under 212, which included a 69 in Round 2. From there, UH headed to the West Coast to compete in the Wyoming Desert Classic in Palm Desert, Calif., and the in Fresno, Calif. Freshman Nainoa Calip was the team s top finisher in both events tying for 41st and 44th, respectively. As a team, UH placed 17th and 15th, respectively. The Warriors concluded their four-week stretch at the in San Diego, Calif., placing 10th overall. Calip again was the team s top finisher with a 227 total and tie for 34th place. Following a one-month break, Hawai i returned to competition with the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif., the team s final preparation for the WAC Championships. Kua was the top finisher, tying for 47th overall and a 222 total and as a team, UH placed 15th. Hawai i served as hosts to the, held at the Rio Secco Golf Club for the third straight year. The Warriors tied for seventh with a 921 total while individually, Kua tied for 18th with a 228 total. Only one senior graced the roster - four-year letterwinner Kamden Brakel, who competed in seven tournaments with a 78.3 stroke average. The Acampo, Calif., native participated in 35 career tournaments for the Warriors with a 77.7 average in 101 rounds. Kua was the only Warrior to compete in all 10 tournaments and posted a teambest 74.0 average. Freshman Nainoa Calip played in nine tourneys with a 76.2 average. Eight Warriors competed in at least half of the tournaments this season, five of whom were either freshmen or sophomores. Warrior Golf Release Page 1
