Her aggressive uptempo style play deemed as 94 Feet of Heat, inspires her players to defend at a higher level coupled with a high-powered offensive system. Her offensive and defensive systems are both charged with excitement and precision as the young and energetic Lady Tigers work extremely hard in their quest to bring another championship back to the home of the JSU Tigers! Finishing her third season, the Lady Tigers closed out regular season competition in (3rd) Place while entering the SWAC tournament competition as the (No. 2) seed. Losing by two points at the buzzer, the Lady Tigers ended their rally toward the championship in the semi-final round for the second consecutive year. As a result, she rallied her team to close the second season with the Lady Tigers capturing several key accomplishments, notably finishing the regular season and SWAC competition in (3rd) Place and leading the team to the semifinal round of the SWAC Conference Championships. The Lady Tigers compiled a winning SWAC Conference record of 12 wins, and 6 losses resulting in the first winning conference record in the last five years. The team improved its overall record to setting up a.500 season. Dixon s second season also showcased her ability to develop players athletically and academically. She helped Alisa Ross, Dominique Brothern, and Ayanna Hardy-Fuller earn SWAC Players of the Week honors during the season. Dixon was also able to create forward progress and momentum by navigating the Lady Tigers SWAC conference record to 9-9 (.500) and finishing the regular season with the most wins within the last four years of JSU women s basketball. Dixon s ability to develop and enhance student-athletes performance both -on and -off the court proved successful with individual players improving their individual game play and securing the highest NCAA Division I Head Coach s APR rating of 1000 for the 2012 and 2014 Academic Years. Tiffany Kellum was able to capture SWAC Player of the Week honors, and the 1,000 point scoring mark during her four year career, and ended the season as a 1st TEAM All SWAC Conference Player. 6 Head Coach Surina Dixon Before UMES, Dixon served as the head assistant coach at Arkansas State University, where she helped lead the Lady Indians (now Red Wolves) to their best start in school history and their first Top 25 National Ranking. Dixon also worked as an assistant coach at Texas Southern University, where she helped guide the Lady Tigers to their best finish in over a decade. Before joining the collegiate ranks, Dixon was a successful coach in the Memphis school district. At Germantown Middle School, she won eight District and six County Championships and a run of five undefeated seasons. While at Germantown, she posted a overall record. While in transition from coaching middle school to college, Dixon had the opportunity to both play and coach two seasons of professional basketball with the WBA Memphis Blues. She was known as a crafty and intelligent player with a keen understanding of the game. Her court vision, along with her drive and determination, made her one of the best point guards in the league. Aside from her athletic accomplishments, Dixon is most proud of her academic achievements. The Mississippi Valley State University star player and alumnus graduated with honors. She went on to earn a master s degree in educational leadership from the University of Mississippi. She was inducted into the Mississippi Valley State Hall of Fame on April 9, Dixon is a member of several professional and national organizations, including the Women s Basketball Coaches Association, the Black Coaches Association, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Who s Who among American Colleges and Universities.
