That number was the highest figure the Herd has posted since moving to the FBS level in 1997, surpassing the 50.5 percent clip (92-182) in Climbing the Charts: Marshall s Rakeem Cato has completed 66.2 percent of his passes in his college career (588 completions in 888 attempts). That figure currently puts him atop the Herd s all-time record book, just ahead of Byron Leftwich (65.1, ) and Chad Pennington (63.4, ). Tommy Shuler had 110 catches in 2012, breaking Mike Barber previous record of 106 in Rushing TDs No Problem in 2012: The Marshall rushing attack had 24 scores in 12 games last year, 15 more than the entire 2011 total in 13 contests. Perfect vs. Texas at Home: Interestingly enough, Marshall has never lost to a school from Texas at home. The Thundering Herd is a perfect 9-0 against Texas schools in games played in Huntington. Marshall owns a win over North Texas (1988), two wins over Houston (2008, 2012), two wins over Rice (2007, 2011), two wins over SMU (2005, 2009) and a pair of wins over UTEP (2006, 2010). Herd Adds Six New Assistant Coaches for 2013: The Marshall football staff saw quite a bit of turnover in 2012, as six new coaches joined the staff. Chuck Heater is the Herd s new defensive coordinator. Joining him on that side of the ball is defensive ends coach Sean Cronin and Adam Fuller. On the offensive side, Thomas Brown is now the running backs coach, while Mike Furrey was named wide receivers coach and Alex Mirabal is the new offensive line coach. Also, offensive coordinator Bill Legg moved from coaching tackles and tight ends to quarterbacks. Todd Hartley went from safeties to tight ends and J.C. Price is now coaching the defensive tackles. Cronin Named Defensive Ends Coach at Marshall: Sean Cronin, a member of the 2010 Marshall football coaching staff, has returned to take the defensive ends coaching position, the department officially announced Wednesday. Cronin, who spent the 2010 season as the defensive line coach at Marshall and has played on or coached for four national championship teams, was the defensive line coach at Temple University the past two seasons. Led by three-time All-MAC first team defensive end Adrian Robinson and All-MAC DE Morkeith Brown, the Owls defense dominated the Mid-American Conference in 2011, leading all teams in five categories while ranking No. 3 nationally in scoring defense. We are pleased to welcome Sean and his family back to Huntington, Herd coach Doc Holliday said. His addition will not only strengthen our defensive line, but bolster our recruiting efforts as well. We re fortunate to have him. In 2012, Brown (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and DE Adrian Robinson (Pittsburgh Steelers) signed rookie free agent contracts, helping to set the Temple school record with a class of 12 NFL signees. I m excited to return to Marshall and to have the opportunity to work with Coach Holliday and Coach (Chuck) Heater, Cronin said of the Herd s defensive coordinator. Huntington is a special place and I am eager to get to work with our student-athletes. He joined the Thundering Herd staff after spending the 2009 season as the defensive line coach at The Citadel. Prior to The Citadel, Cronin spent three years as a graduate assistant defensive coach at the University of Florida, working with NFL Draft selections Jermaine Cunningham (2nd rd., New England), Carlos Dunlap (2nd rd., Cincinnati), Derrick Harvey (1st rd., Jacksonville), Jarvis Moss (1st rd., Denver), Ray McDonald (3rd rd., San Francisco), Joe Cohen (4th rd., San Francisco), Marcus Thomas (4th rd., Denver Broncos), and Jaye Howard (4th rd., Seattle Seahawks). He also worked with Holliday and Heater with the Gators. Cronin won two national titles as a player at Georgetown (Ky.) and helped the University of Florida to national championships in his first and third seasons as a graduate assistant in Gainesville. Cronin went to UF after spending the 2005 season at Marshall, where he served as the offensive and special teams quality control assistant. In that role, Cronin performed multiple duties, including film break down and statistical analysis. Following graduation, Cronin spent two seasons as the linebackers coach at Division II Clarion (Pa.) University. Cronin went to Moeller High School in Cincinnati and attended the University of Cincinnati, where he was a defensive end before transferring to Georgetown College (Ky.), where he played defensive end his first season and defensive tackle during his final two years. As a player, Cronin was part of three teams that played for the national championship and two that won the title. In 2002, he was an All-American and All-Conference selection. Upon graduation from Georgetown, Cronin spent the spring semester of his senior year interning at his alma mater assisting with the defensive line and in strength and conditioning efforts. In 2002, Cronin earned his B.A. in history with a minor in coaching from Georgetown (Ky.). In 2004, he completed work for a master s in rehabilitative science at Clarion. Cronin is married to the former Emily Heater. The couple has two daughters, Grace and Caitlin. Brown Named Running Backs Coach at Marshall: Thomas Brown, formerly a standout running back at the University of Georgia and in the National Football League, has joined the Marshall Football staff as running backs coach, head coach Doc Holliday announced Thursday. Brown comes to Marshall after one season as the running backs coach at Chattanooga. He helped the Mocs to a winning season at 6-5, a mark that included overtime losses to nationally-ranked teams Georgia Southern and Wofford. Thomas is an excellent addition to our staff, Holliday said. He has competed at the highest level of our sport and has a tremendous reputation in Atlanta with players and coaches alike. We are pleased to welcome Thomas and his family to our program. Before going to Chattanooga, Brown spent one year (2011) working with the football program at Georgia on the strength and conditioning staff. I m very excited to have this opportunity to join the staff here at Marshall, said Brown. I am looking forward to working with some talented student-athletes and becoming a member of the Marshall community. Brown was a prep standout in the Atlanta area at Tucker High School before going on to an all-star career at Georgia, where he was a four-year starter and a member of the Bulldogs 2005 Southeastern Conference championship squad. After finishing his career as the fifth-leading rusher in Georgia history, he was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He then spent the 2009 season with the Cleveland Browns. He earned his bachelor s degree in speech communication from Georgia. Brown and his wife, Jessica, have two children, Orlando and Tyson. Furrey Named Wide Receivers Coach at Marshall: Marshall head coach Doc Holliday announced Thursday that Mike Furrey has officially joined the Thundering Herd football staff as its wide receivers coach. Furrey, an eight-year NFL veteran at wide receiver/defensive back for St. Louis Rams, Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns and Washington Redskins, comes to Huntington after two seasons as the head coach and offensive coordinator at Kentucky Christian University. It is a pleasure to welcome Mike and his family to our program, Holliday said. He

4 brings with him an outstanding resume, not only as a coach and a person, but also as someone who played at the game s highest level for the length he did. Our wide receiver unit is in good hands. At KCU, he took an 0-11 program and turned it into one that boasted a 7-4 record and a national ranking of No. 25 in NAIA Division I by the end of the 2012 season. He also coached the wide receivers and quarterbacks at KCU and raised and secured funds to build KCU s turf field. It is an honor and a privilege to get an opportunity to coach at Marshall with this staff, said Furrey. I am excited to work with Coach Holliday and Coach Legg, two men who have tremendous respect in the coaching community. Prior to KCU, he served as the wide receiver/secondary coach at Madison Plains High School in London, Ohio, after a successful career in the NFL. While with the Cleveland Browns, he won the 2010 JB Award, an award given annually to those who specialize in community service by CBS studio host James Brown. Furrey also won the NFL s prestigious Ed Block Courage Award, which highlights those who show the qualities of courage, compassion, commitment and community service. In 2009, he was a finalist for the NFL s Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, which honors a player s volunteer and charity work as well as his excellence on the field. Furrey also was nominated for the award in 2007 and While with the Lions, Furrey led the NFC in receptions (98) in 2006 and was second only to Houston s Andre Johnson in the NFL. He also set an NFL non-rookie record for a having the most catches after not recording one in the previous season. He also was named the Lions Co-Offensive Player of the Year and served as the organization s union representative in the NFLPA. For his career, he finished with 221 catches for 2,298 yards and seven touchdowns. In 2007, he founded and became president of the Mike Furrey Foundation. The organization s goal is to improve the lives of those who are hurting, homeless, hopeful and/or hungry. To date, the foundation has raised more than $500,000. Prior to his NFL career, he played for the Las Vegas Outlaws in the XFL in 2001 (18 catches, 243 yards, one touchdown) and for the Arena Football League s New York Dragons for two years. He was leading the AFL in receptions (108), receiving yards (1,574), receiving touchdowns (46, tying an AFL record for touchdowns in a single season), and points (288) when he left the Dragons on April 29, 2003 to sign with the Rams. During his collegiate days, Furrey was a three-time All-American at Northern Iowa after transferring from Ohio State, where he was a member of the team that won the 1996 Rose Bowl. In his three years at UNI, Furrey set new Gateway Football Conference receiving records with career totals of 242 receptions for 3,544 yards and 27 touchdowns. Furrey and his wife, Koren, have a daughter, Makayla, and sons Stone and Kanon. Fuller Named Linebackers Coach at Marshall: Marshall head football coach Doc Holliday announced Wednesday that Adam Fuller has been named the Thundering Herd s linebackers coach. Fuller comes to Huntington after four seasons as Chattanooga s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Our linebacking corps will benefit greatly from Adam s addition to the staff, Holliday said. He has been very successful everywhere he has been and his experience with this position makes us better. In 2012, Fuller s defense ranked in the top 18 in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) in nearly every category, including first down defense (6th, 15.7 per game), total defense (10th, ), pass defense (12th, 166.0) and scoring defense (18th, 20.4). In 2011, UTC led the Southern Conference in total defense (305.3 yds/game), scoring defense (19.7 ppg), pass efficiency defense (100.15), pass defense (140.8 yds/game), turnover margin (+9), fumbles recovered (14), opponent thirddown conversion (33%) and opponent fourth down conversion (38%) in The Mocs ranked in the top 20 in the nation in sacks and passing defense in 2009 and third in the SoCon in rushing defense in UTC was also in the top 20 in the nation with 14 fumbles recovered in In four seasons, Fuller helped guide 13 defensive players to All-Southern Conference honors, including two-time All-American linebacker Wes Dothard and All-American defensive end and Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year Davis Tull. He also mentored 2010 SoCon Freshman of the Year Kadeem Wise and 2009 SoCon Defensive Player of the Year and All-American Josh Beard. Cornerback Buster Skrine became the first Moc drafted since 2001 when he was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Cornerback Chris Lewis-Harris signed a free-agent contract with the Cincinnati Bengals and saw action during the 2012 regular season and playoffs. I want to thank Coach Holliday and Marshall University for the opportunity to increase upon the traditions and championships of the past, Fuller said. Mirabal Named to Marshall Football Staff: Marshall head football coach Doc Holliday announced Thursday that Alex Mirabal has been named an assistant coach on the offensive side of the Herd s coaching staff. Mirabal, who served as Assistant Head Coach for six years at FIU, was also the Panthers offensive line coach for the past three years after tutoring the tight ends his first three seasons. Alex provides an immediate boost to this coaching staff, Holliday said. We are fortunate to welcome not only a great coach, but also a tenacious recruiter to our Marshall Football family. In 2012, FIU offensive linemen Caylin Hauptmann and Rupert Bryan, Jr. were named second and third team All-Sun Belt Conference selections, respectively, by Phil Steele. During FIU s impressive two-year run in 2010 and 2011, Mirabal s offensive line was regarded as one of the best in the Sun Belt, allowing just 20 and 15 sacks, respectively. Behind a much-improved offensive line, FIU continually broken single-season and single-game offensive records. In 2010, after an impressive victory over Troy -- the school s first against the Trojans when the Panthers rushed for an FIU-record 448 yards -- the entire offensive line was awarded a Helmet Sticker by ESPN. com. It is an honor to be part of this program, Mirabal said. Marshall University has a rabid fan base and I look forward to working with its student-athletes to achieve greatness, on and off the field. A long-time Miami-Dade high school football coach, Mirabal taught and coached around south Florida since 1993 and, prior to arriving at FIU, helped Miami Christopher Columbus High School to three district championships in four years as the Explorers offensive line coach and run game coordinator. In 2008, Mirabal s tight ends played an integral role in the emergence of the FIU offense. Not only did that corps blocking skills shore up an improved passing game, but the FIU tight ends also were on the receiving end of 17 total passes, 14 of those by junior Eric Kirchenberg. During the winter of 2007, Mirabal was honored with inclusion on the coaching staff of Team USA Football, a Miami-Dade and Broward County high school allstar team that competed in and advanced to the championship round of the NFL Global Junior Championship XI. Mirabal began his coaching career at Christopher Columbus in 1993 by taking on a variety of roles. He was the Explorers assistant track and field coach and a volunteer varsity football offensive line coach for six years. Mirabal was the school s junior varsity head football coach in and then took on the program s strength and conditioning coordinator responsibilities from

5 During that time, he also assumed the titles of varsity running backs coach in and then varsity offensive line coach from Mirabal moved on to G. Holmes Braddock Senior High School from and worked as the Bulldogs offensive line coach and offensive coordinator in Beginning in 2003, he returned to Columbus and became an integral part of the Explorers football success. With the football program, he was directly responsible for the speed and agility programs in addition to the program s administrative duties. In May 2012, he was awarded the highest honor in his field when he was certified as a master strength and conditioning coach (MSCC) at the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association s national conference. The title of master strength and conditioning coach represents professionalism, knowledge, experience, expertise as well as longevity in the field. He is also CPR/AED certified. I am very excited to be working with Coach Holliday and Marshall, a program that is rich in its history and tradition, said Sinclair. I look forward to training our guys from both a mental and a physical standpoint and helping them achieve greatness. Marshall Names Temple s Chuck Heater as Defensive Coordinator: Thundering Herd head coach Doc Holliday announced Monday that Chuck Heater, Temple s defensive coordinator for the past two seasons, has accepted the same position at Marshall. Heater also will coach the secondary, Holliday said. Chuck is one of the most respected coaches in the nation and will bring with him a proven track record of success, Holliday said. He has helped win three national titles and I m tremendously excited for him to join our staff. Heater, a 37-year veteran in the college coaching ranks, also served as the codefensive coordinator at Florida in 2010 and assistant defensive coordinator in 2008 and He helped win two national titles during his six-year stint in Gainesville (where he coached alongside Holliday from ) and another in 1988 while serving as the secondary coach at Notre Dame. He s one of the best teachers. I used to just sit in his meetings and watch him coach, said Urban Meyer, who mentored Heater at Florida and is now the head coach at Ohio State. Coach Heater has a tendency of making some players out of non-players. In 2012, Heater s unit produced the BIG EAST s Rookie of the Year in Owls linebacker Tyler Matakevich, who became the first freshman in school history to record at least 100 tackles (101). The Owls also ranked third in the league in sacks with 2.27 per contest. Led by three-time first team All-Mid-American Conference defensive end Adrian Robinson as well as All-MAC honorees DE Morkeith Brown, S Kevin Kroboth, and LB Tahir Whitehead, the Owls defense dominated the MAC in 2011, leading all teams in five categories while ranking No. 3 nationally in scoring defense behind national champion Alabama and LSU. The Owls recorded two shutouts. Linebacker Tahir Whitehead was drafted in the fifth round by Detroit Lions in 2012, one of a school record three draftees and a school-record class of 11 NFL signees. From the defense, DE Morkeith Brown (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), LB Stephen Johnson (New Orleans Saints), and DE Adrian Robinson (Pittsburgh Steelers) signed rookie free agent contracts. It is a great day for me personally to get reunited with Coach Holliday, said Heater. I consider Doc one of the truly outstanding coaches in this profession and am excited to reconnect with my West Virginia roots. I look forward to my contribution in returning Marshall to football greatness. Heater s coaching stops have come at Florida, Colorado, Colorado State, Northern Arizona, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Temple, Toledo, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin. The defensive coordinator at Florida in 2010, he has coached in 25 bowl games, including eight on New Year s Day, and the 2007 and 2009 BCS National Championship Games, where Florida captured two national titles, and the 1988 national championship with Notre Dame. He has twice been nominated for the Frank Broyles Award (2006, 2011) as the nation s top assistant coach. Chuck Heater is a proven winner at every stop he s been, said Boston College head coach Steve Addazio. He s been a part of three national championships as a position coach and as a coordinator. He s one of the most respected football coaches in the country. He brings a tremendous amount of energy and passion and has a unique ability to get his players to play really hard. As great a football coach as he is, he s even a better person. He s a true family man who will treat every player like he is his son. Heater, 60, has been associated with six National Coaches of the Year in his playing and coaching career (Barry Alvarez, Earle Bruce, Lou Holtz, Meyer, Bill McCartney and Bo Schembechler) while mentoring 20 NFL Draft selections and 24 NFL players as well as numerous all-conference picks, including Jim Thorpe Award winner Chris Hudson (Colorado). Under his guidance, the Gators recorded 116 interceptions, the most in the SEC and the secondbest total in the nation during that time frame. In 2010, Heater led the Gator secondary to a No. 3 ranking in SEC pass defense and SEC pass defense efficiency, while ranking second in the conference with 17 interceptions. Safety Ahmad Black was named a second team All-American in In 2009, Heater helped guide a Florida secondary that ranked first in the SEC, the first time since 1988, and second in the nation in pass defense, allowing just yards per game. Four opponents failed to crack the 100-yard mark in passing offense against the Gators and six completed fewer than 50 percent of their pass attempts. Heater helped turn around a defensive secondary that was one of the nation s worst in 2007 to rank among the best in The UF pass efficiency defense ranked third in the nation in 2008 (up from 71st in 2007) and the pass defense improved to rank 20th in the nation in 2008 (up from 98th in 2007). Sophomore Ahmad Black was named second-team All-SEC by the coaches and honorable mention All-American honors from Sports Illustrated. 6 mention recognition for the All-Sophomore team. Will Hill was selected to the SEC All-Freshman team and was named a secondteam All-Freshman performer by College Football News. Black tied for the national lead with seven interceptions in 2008, totaling 191 interception return yards, the second-most in the country, and two touchdowns. Heater served as the recruiting coordinator for the 2006 and 2007 Florida classes that each ranked among the top two nationally, including No. 1 by several services. The 2008 class was ranked in the top five by several services. The Gator secondary led the SEC in interceptions in 2005 and 2006 with 16 in 2005 (tied with Georgia) and 21 in UF s 2006 total tied for the fourth-highest in school history. Florida s 2006 pass defense efficiency (98.3) ranked fourth nationally and second in the SEC. UF surrendered only 10 passing touchdowns in 2006 (tied for eighth nationally). The unit also ranked second in scoring defense in the league and sixth nationally (13.5). Heater guided All-SEC first-team selection Ryan Smith, whose total of eight interceptions led the league and was seventh nationally in The total was also the secondhighest by a Gator in school history. He tutored the 2005 cornerbacks at Florida that were part of a secondary that allowed just 52.3 percent of passes to be complete the 16th-best percentage nationally. A member of the UF secondary had a sack in five of the 12 games on the year. He coached All-SEC performer Dee Webb in 2005 (First Team by AP and Second Team by coaches), who led the SEC in pass deflections and team MVP Vernell Brown who ranked second in the SEC in interceptions. Heater worked alongside former Florida coach Urban Meyer at four different Division I programs. In 1986, Heater coached the secondary at Ohio State when Meyer was a graduate assistant. They coached together again at Colorado State from , where Heater was the defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach and Meyer as the receivers coach. Heater was also a member of the Utah coaching staff in During the 2004 campaign, Heater served as the cornerbacks coach and recruiting coordinator at Utah as the Utes completed a perfect 12-0 season. He spent five years at Washington as either the cornerbacks or running backs coach from and also served as the Huskies recruiting coordinator. Heater was credited with helping the school sign three recruiting classes rated in the Top 15. Three of his recruiting classes produced a Freshman All-American. In 2002, he switched from the corners to the running backs. He also oversaw the Huskies punt and kick return teams. During his first season at Notre Dame, Heater was a member of the coaching staff that led the Irish to a 12-0 record and the 1988 national championship. He also served as the secondary coach at Notre Dame ( ), Ohio State ( ) and Wisconsin ( ). Heater coached the running backs from and the secondary at Toledo from He began his collegiate coaching career in 1976 at Northern Arizona, coaching running backs. Marshall Sacks Miami (Sept. 29, 2004) HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall senior defensive end Jonathan Goddard amassed a careerhigh four sacks, forced a fumble, recovered a fumble, and made nine tackles in leading an inspired Marshall football team to a win over Mid-American Conference rival Miami at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. I just went out and played hard every down, Goddard said. This was a big game, a rivalry game, and everyone on our team did what we had to do to get the win over a good team. Marshall (1-3, 1-0 MAC) scored a season-high 33 points in the win that was televised nationally by ESPN2, however the defense managed to harass the RedHawks (2-2, 1-1 MAC) throughout forcing five turnovers and limiting Miami to only 263 total yards of offense. Much of that disruption came from Goddard. I thought our defense played very well tonight, Marshall coach Bob Pruett said. We forced some turnovers and got good pressure on them. He (Goddard) was awesome. He changed the whole game...they could not stop him. Marshall established the tone early with a Curtis Keyes interception of a Josh Betts pass on the first play of the game. The Thundering Herd managed to convert a 31-yard field goal attempt to take the early 3-0 lead. Miami s next possession ended with Goddard sacking Betts for an eight yard loss and forcing a fumble that Marshall s Reggie Hayes would recover at the Miami 27. From there, Marshall quarterback Stan Hill fired a 27-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Brad Bates to put the Herd up, 10-0, at the 8:54 mark of the first quarter. Miami would answer, however with a six play, 80-yard drive that ended with a Mike Smith four yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 10-7, before going ahead, 14-10, with 59 seconds to go in the first half on a one yard touchdown pass. Marshall answered the call in the second quarter with a 16-yard pass from Hill to Josh Davis at the 10:37 mark and a 29-yard Ian O Connor field goal at the 9:00 mark, to take a lead at halftime. In the second half, the Herd showed signs of pulling away. Hill connected with Bates on a six-yard touchdown pass with 7:47 to go in the quarter to widen the gap to (Marshall s two-point conversion attempt failed), and on the Herd s following possesion Donte Newsome broke free for a 52-yard touchdown run to put Marshall up The RedHawks refused to go away and capped off a 10-play, 70-yard drive with a 27-yard field goal to close out the third quarter of action. Miami would later score on a Josh Betts one yard quarterback sneak and convert on a a two-point conversion to make it a one possession game with seven minutes to play. On the Herd s next possession, Miami s Joey Card would intercept a Stan Hill pass that was tipped by a receiver and return it to the Marshall 16 yard line. With momentum swinging, Marshall s defense rose to the occassion, forcing a Miami fumble that would bound out of the endzone for a touchback just three plays later. In addition to this, Marshall s defense prevented Miami from scoring on its final possession to preserve the win. I m really proud of our football team, Pruett said. We needed this win and now we need to continue. Marshall recorded 338 total yards of offense to Miami s 263, and managed 22 first downs to the RedHawks 16. In addition to Goddard s impressive night, senior linebacker Kevin Atkins tallied 10 tackles and one interception, and senior defensive end Jamus Martin posted eight tackles (three for a loss), forced a fumble, and was responsible for two sacks. Offensively, senior running back Earl Charles rushed for 122 yards and Hill completed 23 of 37 passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns. Josh Davis grabbed a game-high seven receptions for 61 yards and touchdown, while Brad Bates managed six catches for 66 yards and two scores. Davis seven receptions moved him into second all-time in MAC receptions with 238, just behind Marshall s Darius Watts who holds the league record with 272. Miami was led by Mike Smith s 95 rushing yards and a touchdown. Betts finished the night, 14-of-23 passing for 144 yards and one touchdown. He threw two interceptions.
