3 WEST VIRGINIA S LAST GAME: No. 16 OKLAHOMA 16, WEST VIRGINIA 7 NORMAN, OK (Sept. 7, 2013) - A combined eight turnovers by both teams on a hot, steamy night in Norman hindered the offenses and pumped up the defenses as No. 16 Oklahoma downed West Virginia, 16-7, in front of 84,692 at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Turnover totals in the Big 12 opener for both schools saw West Virginia with three fumbles and one interception, while the Sooners faired no better with two fumbles and two interceptions. The leg of Oklahoma kicker Mike Hunnicut proved to be the big difference in the game. The All-America candidate converted on field goals of 44, 21 and 32 yards to keep the Sooners in front for most of the night. Despite the turnovers, the Sooners did get a running game going and finished with 316 yards. Leading the effort was Brennan Clay with 170 yards on 22 carries. Clay was followed by Damien Williams with 96 yards to form a strong one-two ground game for OU. The Oklahoma rushing success eventually wore down the West Virginia defense, which played well for most of the night. By churning out yards on the ground, the Sooners held almost a 9:00 advantage in time of possession and ran 13 more plays than the Mountaineers. While running plays stood out for Oklahoma, it was the West Virginia ground game that struck first. On West Virginia s second possession, junior Dreamius Smith broke loose for a 75-yard touchdown run to put the Mountaineers on the board first. Not only was it West Virginia s longest play from scrimmage thus far in 2013, but it was Smith s first career touchdown as a Mountaineer. The run gave WVU the lead, 7-0, at the 8:54 mark of the first quarter. However, the Sooners would start chipping away at the deficit and went on to score the next 16 unanswered points, mainly behind the kicking of Hunnicutt. The junior hit his first field goal with 4:22 left in the first by connecting from 44-yards out to put the score at 7-3. The Sooners took the lead for good at the 13:35 mark of the second quarter, when quarterback Trevor Knight hit Trey Millard for a one-yard scoring pass, which was set up after a WVU muffed punt. Oklahoma took a 13-7 lead into the locker room, when Hunnicut hit from 21-yards away to end a 13-play, 83-yard drive. The long, time-consuming drive before the half was indicative of the game for the Mountaineers. The drive put OU s halftime advantage at 19 more plays and just over 5:00 more possession time. Despite a scoreless third quarter, the Mountaineer offense showed signs of life in the second half of play, but turnovers and execution problems continued to stall drives. Oklahoma scored the final points in the game with just over 10:00 remaining, when Hunnicutt hit for a 32-yard field goal. Leading the defensive effort in holding the Sooners to just 16 points on their home field was safety Darwin Cook with 11 tackles, one fumble recovery and one interception. Linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski added 11 tackles. Lineman Will Clarke came through with a fumble recovery, and safety Karl Joseph grabbed his first interception of the season. Both interceptions and fumble recoveries were key to stopping Sooner drives and keeping the Mountaineers in the game. Final totals showed West Virginia with 169 yards rushing and 218 passing to total 387 yards of offense. Oklahoma s final totals came in at 316 yards on the ground and 119 through the air for 435 total yards. The seven points scored by the Mountaineers were the lowest in the Dana Holgorsen era at West Virginia. 41 GAME 1: WEST VIRGINIA 24, WILLIAM & MARY 17 MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Aug 31, 2013) - New faces made their mark on West Virginia football for the first time as the Mountaineers won their season and home opener by a count over William & Mary. Charles Sims, Dreamius Smith, Wendell Smallwood, Dakiel Shorts, Ronald Carswell, Devonte Mathis and Nick O Toole were just some of the new names to make their debut in a Mountaineer uniform, and all had a role in the season s first victory. Sims led all rushers with 120 yards on 23 carries, including an 11-yard touchdown rush for the season s first score. Smith added 40 yards rushing, while Smallwood scored the go-ahead touchdown on a two-yard rush in the fourth quarter. Carswell showed his explosiveness with a 69-yard third quarter touchdown reception, and Shorts and Mathis combined for 11 catches for 107 yards. Another pleasant surprise was the punting of O Toole, a redhsirt sophomore, who flipped the field in WVU s favor on four of his five punts. He averaged 50.6 yards per punt with a long of 60 yards. The weather was hot and steamy at Milan Puskar Stadium, and the Mountaineers started with a hot hand by taking their opening drive 67 yards on eight plays for a 7-0 lead behind Sims 11-yard touchdown rush. However, the rest of the first half belonged to William & Mary, as the Tribe tied the game at the 3:28 mark of the first quarter on a Darnell Laws one-yard touchdown reception. William & Mary took the lead at the 8:56 mark of the second quarter, when quarterback Michael Graham rushed in from five-yards out for a 14-7 Tribe advantage. W&M upped its advantage to 17-7 at the half, when kicker John Carpenter added a 29-yard field goal with just 0:23 left. The Mountaineers came up with two key scores in the third quarter to tie the game, before heading into the fourth. At the 8:44 mark, kicker Josh Lambert connected on a 22-yard field goal to end a 70-yard drive and pull the Mountaineers closer at On West Virginia s next possession, quarterback Paul Millard hit a streaking Carswell for a 69-yard touchdown pass, which tied the game at and put the momentum back on the West Virginia sideline. While the WVU offense fought back to erase a 10-point deficit, the Mountaineer defense came up big in the second half by blanking the Tribe on the scoreboard and holding them to just 108 total yards in the final two quarters of action. Both teams traded possessions in the final quarter, until West Virginia broke through for the game-winning touchdown with just 3:22 left. Smallwood capped off an eight-play, 50-yard drive with his first career WVU touchdown, which came on a two-yard run. Leading 24-17, the WVU defense wrote the final chapter in the game, as Darwin Cook intercepted a Graham pass on the ensuing drive to seal the game and allow the offense to run out the clock. West Virginia s defensive effort was led by Nick Kwiatkoski, Cook and Rowell, who combined for 19 tackles. William & Mary got 108 yards receiving from Tre McBride, while Graham passed for 207 yards and one score. The Tribe defense was led by Jerome Couplin with 14 tackles. West Virginia finished with a balanced 172 yards rushing and 237 passing for a total of 409 yards of offense. The Tribe totaled 102 yards on the game and 207 through the air for 309 total yards.
