Wings continue to monitor Zetterberg after hit to head By Helene St. James, Detroit Free Press 6:41 p.m. EST February 22, 2015 ANAHEIM, Calif. Henrik Zetterberg felt, according to one eyewitness, well enough to come to Honda Center and argue with Detroit Red Wings teammate Gustav Nyquist. A possible head injury may keep Zetterberg out of playing right away, but bedridden he is not. "Him and Nyqie were just fighting over who's buying dinner," coach Mike Babcock said after practice today in preparation for taking on the Anaheim Ducks Monday. Zetterberg didn't skate, but general manager Ken Holland told the Free Press no decision on Zetterberg's status would be made before Monday. Zetterberg left Saturday's game after the second period, which began with him getting punched in the head by Dallas' Jamie Benn. Zetterberg wasn't available to reporters Sunday. Teemu Pulkkinen is also questionable because of a leg injury suffered during a collision; he was vague about his availability. It's not a scenario the Wings want to see, but it is one to which they know how to respond. A year ago they had to make do for half a season without Zetterberg and half a season without Pavel Datsyuk. If neither Zetterberg nor Pulkkinen are available, "we still have enough hands on deck," Babcock said. "You've got to step up. Opportunity knocks." That would be an opportunity for Daniel Cleary and Joakim Andersson, healthy scratches Saturday. There also would be opportunity for Riley Sheahan, who skated in Zetterberg's spot between Nyquist and Justin Abdelkader, leaving intact the line of Datsyuk with Darren Helm and Tomas Tatar. DETROIT FREE PRESS Red Wings' Henrik Zetterberg suffers possible head injury in Saturday Practice began with eight video clips, Babcock said, from both of their most recent victories, Saturday's 7-6 overtime at Dallas and Wednesday's 3-2 shootout at Chicago. There are details to be cleaned up, but the bottom line, as Babcock put it, is the Wings found a way to win both games. Asked about Anaheim, his response was telling. "They're good," he said. "So are we though, eh?" Jimmy Howard will get the start. To his and the Wings' benefit, they are well familiar with the Ducks from all the time spent in the Western Conference, including the seven-game playoff series in "We kind of know how we match up with these teams here," Justin Abdelkader said. "We know how we need to play to win. Hopefully, it's going to be a good Western swing for us." As soon as dinner plans are sorted, anyway. Detroit Free Press LOADED:

Status of Zetterberg, Pulkkinen uncertain Ted Kulfan, The Detroit News 11:22 p.m. EST February 22, 2015 Anaheim, Calif. The Red Wings will know at Monday's morning skate whether they'll have their full lineup against the Anaheim Ducks. Henrik Zetterberg (upper body) and Teemu Pulkkinen (leg) both didn't practice Sunday after being injured the night before in the wild 7-6 overtime win over Dallas. Both stayed in the training room Sunday, and nobody from general manager Ken Holland, to coach Mike Babcock, to Pulkkinen, who spoke to reporters, would rule anyone completely out. "Let's see how they feel (Monday)," Holland said. Babcock is waiting until the morning skate to see if either player is ready. "We'll have a better handle on it (Monday)," Babcock said. "Neither guy skated (Sunday). We'll see. We still have enough hands on deck if we don't have them. "We tried to get it all organized (Sunday), just in case (they aren't available)." Zetterberg was involved in a battle in front of the Dallas net in the second period, and was punched twice in the head by Stars forward Jamie Benn. Zetterberg appeared dazed after heading to the bench but finished the period, though he didn't come out for the third period. "He was in the room (Sunday) talking with (Gustav) Nyquist about who was going to buy dinner," said Babcock, hinting the injury may not be overly serious. If Zetterberg isn't ready to play? "It'll be a big challenge," Justin Abdelkader said. "He's our leader. He brings so much to the table, not just his on-ice presence. But it's an opportunity for other guys to step up and we have to come together and find a way to win, whoever is in the lineup." Pulkkinen hurt his leg in the first period but kept on playing. Joakim Andersson and Daniel Cleary would enter the lineup if Zetterberg and Pulkkinen are unable to play, with Riley Sheahan going up to the second line, with Nyquist and Abdelkader. "Someone has to play," Babcock said. "You have to step up. Opportunity knocks. Someone has to play against (Ryan) Getzlaf and (Ryan) Kesler. You have to play." Said goaltender Jimmy Howard: "It's been a group effort all season. Everyone has had their moment in the sun. It's not been on a few guys." Wild game Everyone was still buzzing about Saturday's back-and-forth offensive throwdown against Dallas, a game straight out of the 1980s with defense an afterthought. 3

Howard had an even better description, though. "The only thing missing was a cooler of beer on both benches for after the pond hockey game," Howard said. The Red Wings twice overcame two-goal deficits in the third period, while outshooting the Stars 17-6 in the final 20 minutes and pulling out the victory on Niklas Kronwall's goal 36 seconds into overtime. "Was it ugly? Absolutely," Babcock said. "That's just the way it went. Our team did a good job of finding a way to win. There's way more energy in the room when you win than when you don't win." Still, the Red Wings realize they can't play that freewheeling style and be successful this week playing against playoff-caliber teams. "It's probably entertaining for the fans but from a team standpoint we can't play like that," Howard said. "We gave up odd-man rushes, we turned the puck over. We have to eliminate that. We're not going to be successful playing like that. We have to be smarter with the puck, otherwise we're living on the edge." Rivalry renewed The Red Wings and Ducks had a brewing rivalry the last few seasons the Red Wings played in the Western Conference. That includes the tense seven-game, first-round series in the lockout-shortened 2013 postseason won by the Red Wings. "Anaheim, Chicago, I'd say those were the two big rivals," Abdelkader said. "We know these teams, their tendencies and how we need to play to win." The Ducks ( , 81 points) lead the Pacific Division. Detroit News LOADED:

Karen Newman: From Grand Blanc High School to anthem voice of the Detroit Red Wings Aaron McMann on February 22, 2015 at 8:00 AM, updated February 22, 2015 at 8:05 AM FLINT, MI -- Karen Newman can remember the days when her parents put her to bed early. She was one of seven kids in their Rochester home, and if there was one constant, it was hockey on the television. "I grew up on it," Newman said. "I couldn't always watch it, but I could hear it. My dad always had it on -- he wouldn't miss a game." Newman, the blonde bombshell known for belting out her rendition of the "Star- Spangled Banner" before Detroit Red Wings games at Joe Louis Arena, is celebrating 25 years doing so. A 1978 graduate of Grand Blanc High School, it's a job Newman never imagined having. One of three sets of twins, she pursued a degree in music from Oakland University and spent the early part of her career bouncing around different jobs. "I did what everyone else did -- I sang in the clubs, I sang on a cruise ship, I did commercials," Newman said. "It was the Red Wing opportunity that completely changed my path and my career." Newman, ironically, drew the interest of the Red Wings organization while singing the national anthem at The Palace of Auburn Hills during the Detroit Pistons' back-to-back NBA championship seasons in 1989 and By 1991, she was singing on a tryout basis for the Red Wings. "And then Thomas Ilitch called me after the first season and said, 'We'd like to offer the job exclusively, but that means you can't go and sing for anybody else,'" Newman said. "I said, 'Sounds good to me,' and it's stuck ever since." Said former Red Wing Darren McCarty: "She's the best. Not only her voice, but she's a great person. I've known her for almost 25 years or so. Not hard on the eyes and definitely not hard on the ears. We always loved Karen, and she's as much of a staple to the Red Wings organization as Al the Octopus." Newman, who now lives in West Bloomfield and has seen four Stanley Cups return to Detroit, said she spends the 30-minute drive to the Joe each gameday warming up to Celine Dion. "It's a great environment to be in and it's an honor. It was an honor the day they first asked me and 25 years ago it's still an honor." "She's rangy so she warms up the bottom range and warms up the top range, so I feel like I'm loose and ready to go," Newman said. "Like these guys skate and stretch, I'm basically stretching my vocal cords on the way down." 5

She said her routine includes superstitions and singing the anthem out loud without interruption. "And then you don't want to overthink it," Newman said. "That's the big thing -- you don't ever want to overthink it. You don't want to over sing the song, and you never want to overthink it. Because if you think about it too much, you're going to mess up." On Friday night, Newman sang the anthem at Perani Arena in Flint for a charity hockey game between the Detroit Red Wings alumni and group of former Flint Generals players. Right before she was set to go on, the arena microphone went out. Sound soon returned to the building, and she delivered just like she always has for the fans in downtown Detroit. "I went over and said, 'Karen, you're as good as ever,'" Mickey Redmond said. "She never missed a beat when that mic stopped and she kept right on going, just like the pro that she is. It's great to hear her voice." In addition to her duties for the Red Wings, Newman says her 12-year-old twins keep her busy and she just wrapped up the 16th year of her Christmas concert series, the fourth at the Fox Theater in downtown Detroit. As for her future, Newman says she wants to continue as long as the Red Wings want her and she's able to vocally. "Whether it's high school, collegiate or professional, there's nothing like hockey fans," Newman said. "It's a great environment to be in and it's an honor. It was an honor the day they first asked me, and 25 years later, it's still an honor." Michigan Live LOADED:

Despite 'horrible' performance, resilient Red Wings find way to win wild, wideopen 1980s-type game Ansar Khan on February 22, 2015 at 8:30 AM, updated February 22, 2015 at 10:21 AM DALLAS - Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock had a flashback to the wide-open, run-and-gun NHL of the 1980s as he watched Saturday's game against the Dallas Stars at the American Airlines Center. Defenseman Niklas Kronwall described his team's 7-6 overtime victory as a thriller for fans, not so much for the participants. "For players and coaches, there weren't a lot of pretty things out there," Kronwall said. "We didn't do many good things. We've got to be a lot better than that. We got lucky, crawled back into the game and found a way to get two points." The Red Wings twice battled back from two-goal deficits in the third period to tie it before Kronwall scored 36 seconds into overtime in what was a nightmare for goaltenders Kari Lehtonen of Dallas and Jimmy Howard of Detroit, who was pulled midway through the third period in favor of Jonas Gustavsson, when the Stars were leading 6-4. Pavel Datsyuk led the way with a pair of goals, including the game-tying tally with 1:48 remaining in the third period, and two assists. Jakub Kindl, appearing in his first game for the Red Wings in eight weeks, scored twice in a span of 45 seconds within the first two minutes of the third to tie it at 4-4. "Every once in a while they throw one of those retro parties and you dress like it was the '80s," Babcock said. "That's what this was tonight. I thought it was the (Edmonton) Oilers playing the Winnipeg Jets in the 1980s. That's what I used to watch. They used to race to seven. "Datsyuk was the star, obviously, and it was great to see Kuba (Kindl) come back and do what he did. He's got to feel real good about himself and it helps us out a lot." Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg left the game after the second period after being punched in the head by Jamie Benn earlier in the period. The club said he'll be further evaluated on Sunday. The Red Wings ( ) were playing the second of six consecutive road games. "We played not really good today, but we're all happy that we win," Datsyuk said. "It was horrible by us.... They play better than us, but we're lucky to win." Kronwall said of his goal: "(Darren) Helm made a great play holding on to the puck, waiting for me to enter the zone. Pav went to the net and brought all the other guys with him and it just opened up a lane for me. I tried to cut in and throw it back on the net and luckily it went in." Stars coach Lindy Ruff said it's "inexcusable" that the equalizer was allowed to stand. 7

"There's no explanation," Ruff said. "It ruined a hell of a hockey game, bottom line." Said Abdelkader: "The puck found a way to get across the goal line, so that's that." Despite their poor defensive performance, the Red Wings were pleased with their resilience in the third period after the Stars got three goals (from Trevor Daley, Cody Eakin and Erik Cole) in three minutes late in the second period to take a 4-2 lead. "We just said to each other, 'They scored a quick two goals and we can do the same,' " Kindl said. "We just kept coming. It was ugly, but a win is a win." Tomas Tatar made a terrific pass to set up Kindl on the goal that tied it at 4-4 at 1:41 of the third. "Tats got open and I was just trying to give him the puck and get him open for a breakaway," Kindl said. "For sure I thought he was going to bury it. I was actually maybe going for the celebration because I thought he was going to score. I tried to stay with it and it got to me and I had an open net. Again, it was Tats." Curtis McKenzie (4:29) and Shawn Horcoff (10:37 on the power play) put the Stars ahead 6-4. That's when Babcock pulled Howard, who faced 32 shots and made several big saves in the first two periods to limit the damage as it was. "I put Gus in to give him 10 minutes before (his next start)," Babcock said. "That's exactly what he did and then he won the game, so good for our team." Babcock added, "We weren't a very good hockey club tonight in lots of ways as far as systematic and the way you play and the structure in the game.... We can talk about how ugly the game was. We got two points. Give the guys credit." Michigan Live LOADED:

Red Wings might be forced to play tough Ducks without captain, leading scorer Henrik Zetterberg Ansar Khan on February 22, 2015 at 6:21 PM, updated February 22, 2015 at 6:47 PM ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Detroit Red Wings practiced without Henrik Zetterberg Sunday and are prepared to face the Anaheim Ducks Monday without their captain and leading scorer. But coach Mike Babcock stopped short of declaring Zetterberg out for the game (10 p.m., Fox Sports Detroit). He said that will be determined at the morning skate. Zetterberg left after the second period of Saturday's 7-6 overtime victory at Dallas after being punched in the head by Jamie Benn earlier in the period. Benn, who received a roughing penalty on the play, apparently will not face disciplinary action from the NHL. The Red Wings had no update on Zetterberg's condition, but Babcock was encouraged from seeing him at the Honda Center before practice. "He and (Gustav Nyquist) were just fighting over who was buying dinner, so I didn't think it was that bad," Babcock said. But if it's bad enough to force him to miss Monday's game, others will need to step up against the Ducks' one-two punch at center, Ryan Getzlaf and Ryan Kesler. "The way I look at it is you've got to step up," Babcock said. "It's opportunity knocks. Someone's go to play against Getzy, someone's got to play against Kesler, someone's got to play against (Nate) Thompson, (Rickard) Rakell (their other centers). You don't spend half the time worrying about it. "We want Z to play every night, but if he can't play, someone else has got to play." Zetterberg has played in all 57 games this season, picking up 15 goals and 49 points. "It's going to be a big challenge," Justin Abdelkader, one of Zetterberg's regular linemates, said. "He's our leader. He brings so much to the table, not just his on-ice presence. It's an opportunity for other guys to step up. We have to come together here and find ways to win, no matter who's in the lineup." Babcock elevated Riley Sheahan in practice to play between Abdelkader and Nyquist. Sheahan is accustomed to stepping into that second-line center slot, having played there many times last season due to injuries and also this year whenever Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk were paired together. "Obviously, if Z is out one of the centermen is going to have to step in," Sheahan said. "You got to be a little more responsible playing against probably one of the top lines and at the same time you got to be maybe looking at creating offense. "It'll be fun to be playing at that level and it'll be a challenge, but it'll be something to embrace." Babcock kept intact Datsyuk's line with Tomas Tatar and Darren Helm. 9

"Guys have stepped up throughout the season," goaltender Jimmy Howard said. "It's been a group effort, not solely relying on three or four guys. Everyone has had their moment in the sun and now hopefully it's not too serious with Z and he's back sooner rather than later. It gives someone a chance to step up." The Ducks ( ) lead the Pacific Division and are second in the Western Conference with 81 points. Pulkkinen questionable with leg injury Rookie right wing Teemu Pulkkinen also didn't practice Sunday. He said his status will be determined on Monday as well. Pulkkinen injured his leg on a hit from Jordie Benn (Jamie's brother) with 4:42 to play in the first period. He returned at the start of the second period and finished the game. "One guy hit me and it hurt just a little bit in my leg, so we'll see here how it feels tomorrow," Pulkkinen said. Howard starting; Quincey still out: Howard, who was pulled at 10:37 of the third period Saturday after allowing six goals on 32 shots, will start on Monday. Defenseman Kyle Quincey did not practice Sunday and isn't likely to play. Power-play units shuffled: The injuries forced Babcock to juggle his power-play units in practice. The first unit consisted of Datsyuk, Nyquist, Tatar, Abdelkader (net front) and Niklas Kronwall. The second unit featured Sheahan, Stephen Weiss, Tomas Jurco, Helm (net front) and Jakub Kindl, who, after scoring two goals on Saturday, replaced Danny DeKeyser. Here are the lines they skated with on Sunday: Tomas Tatar-Pavel Datsyuk-Darren Helm Gustav Nyquist-Riley Sheahan-Justin Abdelkader Drew Miller-Luke Glendening-Tomas Jurco Stephen Weiss-Joakim Andersson-Daniel Cleary On defense: Niklas Kronwall-Jonathan Ericsson Jakub Kindl-Danny DeKeyser Brendan Smith-Alexey Marchenko Jimmy Howard (starting) Jonas Gustavsson Michigan Live LOADED:

Red Wings could be without Henrik Zetterberg against Ducks By Chuck Pleiness, The Macomb Daily Posted: 02/22/15, 6:21 PM EST The Detroit Red Wings could be without their captain Monday when they play at Anaheim, but no one knows for sure. Henrik Zetterberg missed the entire third period of Saturday s 7-6 overtime over the Dallas Stars after being punched in the head by Jamie Benn late in the second period. He didn t practice Sunday. It s going to be a big challenge, Justin Abdelkader said. He s our leader. He brings so much to the table, not just his on-ice presence. It s an opportunity for other guys to step up, Abdelkader continued. We have to come together here and find ways to win, no matter who s in the lineup. After being limited to just 45 games last season due to back issues, which eventually forced him to have surgery during the Olympic break, Zetterberg hasn t missed a game this season. In 57 games, he leads the team with 49 points (15 goals, 34 assists). Guys have stepped up throughout the season, said Jimmy Howard, who will start in goal against the Ducks. It s been a group effort, not solely relying on three or four guys. Everyone has had their moment in the sun and now hopefully it s not too serious with Z and he s back sooner rather than later. It gives someone a chance to step up. Wings coach Mike Babcock didn t rule Zetterberg out for Monday. He and (Gustav Nyquist) were just fighting over who was buying dinner, so I didn t think it was that bad, Babcock joked. The way I look at it is you ve got to step up. It s opportunity knocks. Someone s got to play against (Ryan Getzlaf), someone s got to play against (Ryan) Kesler, someone s got to play against (Nate) Thompson, (Rickard) Rackell, whatever. Play. You don t spend half the time worrying about it. We want Z to play every night, but if he can t play, someone else has got to play. Riley Sheahan seems to most likely to be elevated to the second line to center Gustav Nyquist and Abdelkader. It s something that s happened before and last year as well, Sheahan said. It ll be fun to be playing at that level and it ll be a challenge but it ll be something to embrace. I m definitely totally comfortable in (the defensive role). It ll be challenge, definitely a good opportunity. Obviously if Z is out one of the centermen is going to have to step in, Sheahan continued. You ve got to be a little more responsible playing against probably one of the top lines and at the same time you got to be maybe looking at creating offense. 11

Teemu Pulkkinen also didn t practice and considers himself day-to-day after a collision with Jordie Benn. I don t know, Pulkkinen said when asked if he was optimistic about playing Monday. We ll see. Howard on the 7-6 win over the Stars Saturday, The only thing that was missing was a cooler of beer on both benches. It was a pond hockey game. Macomb Daily LOADED:

Stars lose heartbreaker to Red Wings in OT AP FEB 21, :34p ET DALLAS (AP) -- After a wild third period that featured six goals, Niklas Kronwall kept overtime short and sweet for the Detroit Red Wings. Kronwall scored 36 seconds into the extra session and Detroit defeated the Dallas Stars 7-6 on Saturday night after overcoming a pair of two-goal deficits in the third. "We didn't do many good things out there. We've got to be a lot better than that," Kronwall said. "But we got lucky." Kronwall's goal wasn't nearly as debated as teammate Pavel Datsyuk's second of the night, which tied the game at 18:12 of the third period. Dallas coach Lindy Ruff and goalie Kari Lehtonen both thought Detroit's Justin Abdelkader interfered with Lehtonen on the play. "I just got kind of pushed in the net and the puck was sliding the other way at the same time," Lehtonen said. "It's weird how they can look at some things from the video and that kind of thing, they cannot. They got it wrong." Ruff was blunt. "There's no explanation. It's inexcusable. It ruined a hell of a hockey game, bottom line," he said. Before that, Trevor Daley, Cody Eakin and Erik Cole scored in a 3-minute span of the second to give Dallas a 4-2 lead. But then Jakub Kindl had two goals 45 seconds apart in the third to tie it 4-all in his return from the minors. "We just said to each other on the bench or in the locker room, `They scored quick goals, and we can do the same thing,'" Kindl said. Curtis McKenzie and Shawn Horcoff gave the Stars a 6-4 advantage before Abdelkader and Datsyuk scored to make it 6-all. Horcoff's goal chased Jimmy Howard from the game after he gave up a season-high six goals while making 26 saves. Jonas Gustavsson stopped two shots for the Red Wings. "I put (Gustavsson) in. Glad we were able to get him 10 minutes," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "The next thing you know, we won the game. "We can talk about how ugly of a game it was; we got two points." Lehtonen had 29 saves but allowed a season-high seven goals. Datsyuk also had two assists. Kronwall, Abdelkader and Gustav Nyquist each had a goal and an assist. Tomas Tatar added two assists for the Red Wings. 13

Daley, Cole, Horcoff and Jamie Benn each had a goal and an assist for the Stars. Jordie Benn and Ales Hemsky had two assists apiece. The Red Wings had an 8-1 advantage in shots before Dallas captain Jamie Benn woke up the Stars with a fight against Detroit's Jonathan Ericsson 6:46 into the game. "Two-goal lead, and then you work hard to get one back and then you blow another one," Jamie Benn said. "That's unacceptable." NOTES: Jamie Benn has scored in six straight games (seven goals, three assists).... Dallas reassigned rookie LW Brendan Ranford to Texas of the AHL.... The Red Wings had won their previous five games in Dallas.... Datsyuk has 48 points (18 goals, 30 assists) in 40 career games against the Stars.... Kindl had the first two-goal game of his 242-game career. He was recalled from Grand Rapids of the AHL to replace D Kyle Quincey, who did not play after leaving Friday's practice because of a lower-body injury.... Detroit captain Henrik Zetterberg (upper body) left after the second period and did not return.... The Red Wings had not given up more than five goals in their first 56 games. foxsports.com LOADED:

St. James: Wings comfortable as NHL trade deadline looms By Helene St. James, Detroit Free Press 6:38 p.m. EST February 21, 2015 DALLAS Pro scouts for the Detroit Red Wings are putting in the last few days worth of evaluations as the NHL trade deadline approaches. But unlike two of their Atlantic Division rivals, there's no desperation around the Wings. The team begins a five-game road trip with a date tonight against the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center, fresh off having beaten, for the second time this season, the Chicago Blackhawks, a favorite to win the Stanley Cup. The Wings have solid footing as a playoff-bound team, and that's why general manager Ken Holland told the Free Press that if he does anything before March 2, it'll be an upgrade. He doesn't need depth. That's unlike his colleagues in Boston and Montreal. The Canadiens, another top-three Atlantic Division team, just lost defenseman Sergei Gonchar to a concussion and defenseman Alexei Emelin to a shoulder injury expected to take at least a month to heal. That leaves GM Marc Bergevin scrambling to plug holes. DETROIT FREE PRESS Notes: Detroit Red Wings to call up Jakub Kindl; Kyle Quincey injured Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli is in a worse position as his team is fighting for an Eastern Conference wild card. Chiarelli told the Boston Globe he's doing what he can, but "it's just hard to make a trade. It doesn't just happen. It doesn't happen like that. You need two teams that are willing to exchange ideas, then consummate a trade. I've exchanged a lot of ideas all year. But a lot of teams are still in it." The more a seller knows just how desperate the buyer is, the higher the price, naturally. The Wings may benefit if Montreal's injuries cause the Canadiens to go on a losing streak, but given that the Wings would like to upgrade their defense, it doesn't help to now have an eager buyer looking for the same player. DETROIT FREE PRESS All forwards on deck leaves Detroit Red Wings awash in options Holland's staff - director of pro scouting Mark Howe, along with Glenn Merkovsky, Bruce Haralson and Kirk Maltby - will be filling out scouting reports through the end of the coming week, before coming to Detroit to be part of the trade day council. The Wings have plenty of cap space - more than $9 million - but barring a string of bad luck such as injuries, the Wings could well look around and decide they're better off holding on to the young talent and draft picks it'd take to get involved in a shrinking market. 16 Detroit 7, Dallas 6 (OT): Why the Red Wings won By Helene St. James, Detroit Free Press 1:48 a.m. EST February 22, 2015 First period: Kari Lehtonen began his night with a save on a rushing Henrik Zetterberg a minute into the game. Lehtonen next had to cover up the puck to deny Gustav Nyquist. Five minutes in, the Wings had a 7-1 shot advantage. At 6:46, Jimmy Ericsson and Jamie Benn fought for about 5 seconds, each landing each in the penalty boxes. Howard got busier in the second half, making a good shot when Ryan Garbutt snapped a shot from the left faceoff dots. Benn scored at 12:42 from just outside the crease after a faceoff in Detroit's zone. Nyquist beat Lehtonen stickside at 16:57 after Riley Sheahan found Nyquist with a pass from the right boards. Alexey Marchenko assisted for his first NHL point. Second period: Benn got 2 minutes for roughing Zetterberg, sending the Wings on a power play at 3:30 of the second period. Howard had to come up big when Antoine Roussel got in on a breakaway around 9 minutes in. Pavel Datsyuk scored at 9:20 when he drove the net from the right corner after a Dallas turnover. Trevor Daley scored at 15:16. Cody Eakins fired a shot through traffic that made it 3-2 at 17:02. Erik Cole dug for the puck in the paint and made it 4-2 at 18:16. Third period: Jakub Kindl scored through a double screen at :56 of the third period and again at 1:41 on a slap shot. Curtis McKenzie deflected Jordie Benn's slap shot at 4:29. Antoine Roussel was called for hooking Kindl at 7:19. Luke Glendening went for tripping at 9:45 and Shawn Horcoff scored when left alone by the right side of the crease, at 10:37. Jonas Gustavsson replaced Howard after six goals on 32 goals. John Klingberg got a delay of game call at 11:01, putting Detroit on a third power play. Justin Abdelkader scored a net-front goal at 12:47. Datsyuk made it 6-6 after Gustavsson had been pulled. Overtime: Niklas Kronwall scored 36 seconds into overtime after Darren Helm fed him the puck. Game reaction: Abdelkader said, "We started well but got off our game. Credit them, they skated well and moved the puck. We found a way to fight back and get some goals there at the end, and Kronwall made a great play on the overtime winner."... Mike Babcock said, "we dominated the first 10 minutes. We were up 8-1 in shots. We had the puck. Then it looked like we couldn't play at all, and suddenly it looked like we could really play."... Kindl said, "it was ugly game. We were down 4-2 and we just said to each other, they score quick two goals, so can we."... Kronwall said, "I thought our start tonight was a lot better than we've been lately. First what, 7, 8, 9, 10 minutes or so I thought we did a lot of good things; exit our zone, get pucks deep and went to work, had some good chances. And then for whatever reason, things just went south from there." Special teams report: The Wings' power play went 1-for-3 and the penalty kill went for 1- for-2. Shot report: The Wings had 36 ( ) and the Stars had 34 ( ). Next game: Monday at Anaheim. 16

Ex-Red Wing Slava Fetisov at middle of 'Red Army' film Steve Schrader, Detroit Free Press 1:07 a.m. EST February 22, 2015 Slava Fetisov doesn't seem at all like he wants to be a film star. He stares at his phone, apparently texting, and holds up a finger for the unseen interviewer to wait with his question. The interviewer does wait a bit but then tries to slip in his question. This time, Fetisov holds up his middle finger. "He would do stuff like that," Gabe Polsky said in a phone interview. "We started off like that, you know, he's tough. A difficult interview." Polsky, who is also the director, set out to make a documentary about the old Soviet Union's hockey juggernaut. He did, but the excellent "Red Army" is very much the story of Fetisov, who grew up in the Soviet system and finished his career winning two Stanley Cups with the Red Wings. "Red Army" opens here Friday at the Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak. The son of Ukrainian immigrants, Polsky grew up in Chicago and played hockey. He became enamored with the Soviets after watching a tape of them. He said Fetisov, now a politician, was at first a reluctant participant. "He didn't want to do it, but he agreed to meet with me for 15 minutes," Polsky said. "That interview lasted 5 hours. He opened up, he thought I was prepared and kind of understood the country, the story. "I didn't know who I was going to get. I didn't know who was going to be the main character. I just started interviewing these guys and the story kind of started to evolve. As I kept working on it, it got more and more focused on Fetisov." During much of "Red Army," the camera is focused on Fetisov's face as he runs through a gamut of memories and emotions: Smiling as he remembers teammates, sneering as he remembers coach Viktor Tikhonov, smirking as he remembers rolling over Canadian teams, tearing up as he remembers the death of a younger brother. Polsky also interviewed Fetisov's Soviet teammates, a former KGB agent, journalists and even Scotty Bowman. Two men who wouldn't participate included Tikhonov who no doubt knew how he'd come off in the film and Igor Larionov, Fetisov's teammate in Russia and Hockeytown. "I tried to get him in the film, and he just was not responsive," Polsky said of Larionov. "I still don't really understand why, but he didn't respond to my many requests.... "I'll tell you what, he saw the movie and thought it was really well done. I think he might have thought twice that he didn't do this film." 17

Fetisov was first selected for the national program when he was 10, and he grew up to be perhaps the world's best defenseman. It gave him a life of hardship but also joy and pride. He has fond memories of coach Anatoli Tarasov, considered the father of Soviet hockey. "He developed my patriotism," Fetisov says in the film. "For me it was very important. I belong to a great country. If you wear the national team uniform, it's your duty to do the best." Tarasov saw hockey as a game of chess. Tikhonov, who died in November, saw his players as mere pawns and made their life miserable. "Did I respect him as my coach? Yes," Fetisov said. "As a person, no." But Fetisov also remembers that time with pride and joy, when he played on the Russian Five unit with Larionov, Alexei Kasatonov, Sergei Makarov and Vladimir Krutov. "I never had more fun than playing together with those... guys," Fetisov said. That was a key element of the Soviet style, keeping five-man units together. "Those players will go down as the greatest five-man unit of all time," Bowman said. They won a lot of games, a lot of championships, for the Soviets, but in the early '80s, Fetisov and other players wanted the chance to play in the NHL. It was a lengthy cat-and-mouse game before he finally was allowed to go, the stubborn Fetisov battling the government over money despite threats of Siberia. But he would not consider defecting: "I cannot run away from my country." His chance finally came in 1989 with the New Jersey Devils. But it wasn't exactly what he was hoping for. "Nobody like me in the U.S.," he said. "They think in clichés. I'm a bad guy, a Communist." Fetisov didn't care for the uninspired style of play, either, which was nothing like the intricate passing of the Soviets. The Red Wings, of course, were the salvation for his NHL career when they acquired him in the season, and the new Russian Five was born, with Fetisov, Larionov, Sergei Fedorov, Slava Kozlov and Vladimir Konstantinov. "Together again on the same team, it was like a fish back in water," Fetisov said. They were Bowman's secret weapon as the Wings won the Stanley Cup in "I didn't really get to learn the system as much as I wanted," Bowman said. "I just let them do what they wanted." Konstantinov was injured in a limo accident after the season, and Fetisov stayed for one more Cup and parade in '98 before retiring. "It's American dream, you know," Fetisov said. 18

Now he is living another dream as "Red Army" has played to good reviews. And he and Polsky took it to the Cannes Film Festival. "He said that was like a highlight of his life," Polsky said. "He said it was like a waking dream. It's so unusual for a hockey player, especially from the Soviet Union, to be on the Cannes red carpet in front of the world press. "He really appreciated that, big-time." Detroit Free Press LOADED:

Wings' Zetterberg suffers possible head injury in Saturday By Helene St. James, Detroit Free Press 1:13 a.m. EST February 22, 2015 DALLAS -- The memory still fresh of how much they miss their captain when he's not available, the Detroit Red Wings are hoping for good news on Henrik Zetterberg. He left Saturday's crazy 7-6 overtime victory over the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center after two periods with what was described by team officials as an upper body injury. Teammates pointed to Jamie Benn's transgressions during a roughing call on Zetterberg early in the second period, with Niklas Kronwall saying of Zetterberg, "I heard he got punched in the head, I don't know if it was once or twice, even, when Benn got his penalty there. "It didn't look very good, but hopefully Hank will recover and we will get him back soon." The penalty came at 3:30, and Zetterberg did play the rest of the period. General manager Ken Holland said Zetterberg would travel with the team overnight to Anaheim, Calif., where the five-game trip continues Monday. "We'll see how he is," Holland said. Coach Mike Babcock said "we'll monitor him tomorrow, see what happens." Asked if a concussion is feared, Babcock said, "I don't really know that. Let's just say he's got an upper body injury and I don't know if he's fine tomorrow or not fine tomorrow. We'll see." Zetterberg missed half of last season with back problems, returning for the last few games of the first-round playoff series. He's been the team's leading scorer all season, and to see him leave early spooked players. "That's tough to see," Abdelkader said. "I saw a replay of the play, it looked like he got punched in the head. I imagine the NHL will take a look at that. "You know, he's been playing so well for us. Hopefully he's all right." 21 Detroit 7, Dallas 6 (OT): Wings survive wild one in Texas By Helene St. James, Detroit Free Press 2:01 a.m. EST February 22, 2015 DALLAS -- The Detroit Red Wings had a few laughs, because that's the reward for winning even when the means were ugly. They also frowned, for having seen their captain skate off with a possible head injury. The Wings left American Airlines Center Saturday after surviving a wild night that saw them twice undo two-goal deficits before Niklas Kronwall scored in overtime to provide a 7-6 victory and a two-point start to a five-game trip. "Every once in a while they throw one of those retro parties, you know, you dress in the eighties? That's what this was," coach Mike Babcock said. "I thought it was the Oilers playing the Winnipeg Jets for crying out loud, in the eighties. That's what I used to watch, when they used to race to seven." BOX SCORE Pavel Datsyuk alone had two goals and two assists. Kronwall, ever the diplomat, said that "I think for the fans, it was probably a lot of fun to watch. From players and coaches, there wasn't a lot of pretty things out there." Worse than three goals allowed the last 5 minutes of the second period was what happened earlier in the second period. Henrik Zetterberg got punched in the head by Jamie Benn, leading to a roughing call on Benn, and leading to Zetterberg leaving at the end of the second period, teammates said. Babcock said Zetterberg will be evaluated today. He missed a third period that would have made anyone's head spin. First, it was Jakub Kindl, back early from a short conditioning stint in the minors, scoring two goals. That made it 4-4. Curtis McKenzie and Shawn Horcoff gave Dallas another two-goal lead, but then Justin Abdelkader scored a goal that would make net-front master Tomas Holmstrom smile, and then Datsyuk scored his second of the night. "Pavel decided in the third that we were going to win the game," Babcock said. "Got her going." Datsyuk scored after Jonas Gustavsson had been pulled and with Abdelkader mugging Kari Lehtonen without getting penalized. "I think the puck found a way to get across the goal line," was Abdelkader's comment. Gustavsson appeared in his first game since Nov. 5, replacing Jimmy Howard after six goals on 32 shots. The night began so well, too, as Howard barely saw the puck the first 10 minutes because his teammates kept pinning the Stars in their own zone. Then Benn -- also busy challenging Jonathan Ericsson to a brief fight - scored at 12:42, but Gustav Nyquist silenced that lead when he beat Lehtonen stick side off a nice centering pass 21

from Riley Sheahan. Datsyuk scored midway through the second when he burned the Stars for a turnover, but the Stars then lit up Jimmy Howard, with Trevor Daley, Cody Eakin and Erik Kole all scoring in the last 5 minutes of the second period. "They just skated, and we didn't," Kronwall said. "We gave up pucks in the wrong areas, they won a lot more battles than we did. There are lots of things you can say that went wrong in those 5 minutes, but if you look at the whole game, there were a lot of things we didn't do well." Datsyuk put it similarly. "We play not really good today," he said. "We happy we win." The happiest in the room may well have been Kindl. He last played Dec. 27, got passed on the depth chart while recovering from an injury, then got sent to the minors for conditioning, where he was supposed to stay two more games only then Kyle Quincey got hurt and the Wings needed him. He estimated his last two-goal game, "was in juniors." He earned his second when he rushed after Tomas Tatar, whom Kindl thought would have scored. "He had a breakaway. For sure I thought he was going to bury it. I was going for celebration because I thought he was going to score, actually. I ended up staying with it and I ended up having open net." Babcock said "it was great to see him come back and do that, because he hadn't played in forever and he went to the minors and then he came in and made a contribution. He's got to feel real good about himself." The Wings were not pleased with how they played, but there was some balm, at least, in the points banked. Detroit Free Press LOADED:

Zetterberg being monitored after taking punches to head Ted Kulfan, The Detroit News 1:35 a.m. EST February 22, 2015 Dallas Now the Red Wings will have to worry about Henrik Zetterberg. The star forward didn't play in the third period of Saturday's 7-6 overtime victory over Dallas after taking two punches to the head in the second period from Dallas forward Jamie Benn. Zetterberg was noticeably dazed on the bench after the punches, but quickly returned to the ice and played 11 minutes, 24 seconds through two periods. General manager Ken Holland said after the game the team will wait to see how Zetterberg feels Sunday in Anaheim. "We'll know more tomorrow (Sunday)," said Holland, who added Zetterberg was flying with the team to California. Coach Mike Babcock didn't have a clear update after the game. "I don't have a clue, we'll monitor tomorrow and see what happens," said Babcock, who added he didn't see the punches from Benn, which drew a roughing penalty at 3:30. "Let's just say he has an upper body injury. (Trainer) Piet (Van Zandt) said we'll evaluate him." Zetterberg's teammates weren't happy with Benn's punches. "He got punched in the head," Niklas Kronwall said. "I don't know if it was once, or twice even, when Benn got his penalty. I saw it on the Jumbotron. It didn't look very good. Hopefully Hank will recover and we'll get him back soon." Said Justin Abdelkader: "That's tough to see. I saw a replay of it. It looked like he got punched in the head. I imagine the NHL will take a look at that. He's (Zetterberg) been playing so well for us and hopefully he's all right. That's a tough play and you never like to see that in hockey and especially Z has been playing so well for us. He's a big part of our team and hopefully he's all right." Kindl sighting The Red Wings got right back in Saturday's game when Jakub Kindl scored twice in the opening moments of the third period. It was the third and fourth goals of the season for Kindl, who played his first game since playing two games in Grand Rapids on a conditioning stint. Kindl last played an NHL game Dec. 27, before hurting his elbow the next day at practice. After that, Kindl never did find his way back into the Red Wings lineup. But Kindl singlehandedly got the Red Wings back in the game, after Dallas exploded for three goals in three minutes late in the second period. 23

"He made the decision to go to the minors and play a little bit because he hadn't played in a long time," Babcock said. "He has to feel real good about himself, which is good." Kindl played 17:36 Saturday, had two goals, and was plus-2 for the evening. "It's been awhile since the last game I played with the Red Wings," said Kindl, who felt going to the AHL for a couple of games was beneficial. "The injury slowed me down and the team has been playing real good so there hasn't been a lot of changes. "I talked to Babs and Kenny and they came up with this idea to go down to Grand Rapids and play a lot of games. I felt great the first game (in GR), got into a game situation, and as the game went on and the days went by, I felt even better." The speed of the NHL affected Kindl early, he said, but he adjusted. "I haven't played at this level for quite a bit," Kindl said. Ice chips Alexey Marchenko's assist on Gustav Nyquist's first goal was Marchenko's first NHL point. Forwards Daniel Cleary and Joakim Andersson and defenseman Kyle Quincey (lower body) were scratched. Tomas Jurco returned to the lineup and replaced Andersson. This was the first time Dallas had scored six goals against the Red Wings since Jan. 8, 2006, a span of 34 games. Detroit News LOADED:

Red Wings beat Stars in wild overtime battle Ted Kulfan, The Detroit News 1:18 a.m. EST February 22, 2015 Dallas There haven't been very many crazy games like this for the Red Wings this season. But they enjoyed it, at least the victory certainly, after Niklas Kronwall won it 36 seconds into overtime, beating goalie Kari Lehtonen with a backhand for a 7-6 Red Wings victory. Pavel Datsyuk had two goals and two assists leading the offensive attack, including tying the game at 18:12 of regulation time. The Red Wings twice overcame two-goal deficits and the loss of Henrik Zetterberg, who was punched in the head in the first period and left the game after two periods. Zetterberg's status for Monday's game in Anaheim is unknown. As for the game, not an artistic beauty but the Red Wings ( , 76 points) will take the two points. "For the fans, it was probably a lot of fun to watch," Kronwall said. "But for the players and coaches, it wasn't a lot of pretty things out there. We didn't do many good things. We have to be better than that." Coach Mike Babcock was wondering whether he was at some 1980s retro night party. "It was the Edmonton Oilers playing the Winnipeg Jets in the 1980s for crying out loud, in a race to seven," Babcock said. "Datsyuk was the star and it was great to see Kuba (Jakub Kindl, with two goals) come back and do what he did. "We weren't very good in a lot of ways systemtically and structure, the way we played, but we found a way to win the game and we need the points." Datsyuk tied it 6-6 after goalie Jonas Gustavsson had been pulled for an extra attacker. Datsyuk scored his second goal of the game and 19th of the season on a mad scramble in front Lehtonen. "We didn't play very good, but we're happy we won," Datsyuk said. "We didn't play great, they played better, but we were lucky to win." The Red Wings rallied from a 6-4 deficit in the third period. Curtis McKenzie deflected a shot past Jimmy Howard at 4:29 of the third period, breaking a 4-4 tie and erasing Kindl's heroics. Kindl scored twice in a 45-second span early in the third period, tying the game 4-4. When was the last time Kindl scored twice in a game? 25
