2 Red Wings' Richards arrives, wins first scrimmage Helene St. James, Detroit Free Press 10:14 p.m. EDT September 10, 2015 Results don't get much more immediate than the one newcomer Brad Richards had on his first day with the Detroit Red Wings. "It was the first time the 'White' was winning the scrimmage," captain Henrik Zetterberg told the Free Press today, after an informal skate at Joe Louis Arena. "He was in white, so I guess he had a pretty good impact today." Richards - who has been given a locker next to Zetterberg - joined the Wings on July 1, on a one-year, $3-million deal, fresh off of helping the Chicago Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup. Weeks before the Blackhawks topped Tampa Bay in the finals, Richards watched the Wings take the Lightning to Game 7 in the first round, which left an impression. "I just played a team that they had on the ropes, in the final," Richards said. "Watching that (first-round) series from afar, everybody kind of thought Detroit had them. We thought the Wings were going to close that series out. They didn't, so that shows you how close it is. I don't see why they can't compete. "This has always been considered, if it is not the best organization, it's right there. They seem to be competing every year for a chance in the playoffs, and that is all I ever want." Richards arrived in Detroit this morning, joined the skate to "get a sweat" going and left immediately afterward to greet movers. "I met people," Richards said. "It was just good to get on the ice. That will make next week a lot easier. "I've admired this team for a long time; no difference the last few years. Even though they haven't made long runs, they are right there. I'm very excited to be a Red Wing. They've had lots of success in the past bringing in veteran guys and bringing them into a role that fits. I was used to that type of thing in Chicago, going in and playing a certain role. That prepared me more for being open-minded with different things. They have lots of good players here, young players, that will create a lot of enthusiasm and push, and that is healthy." Where the Wings saw Richards, 35, as a capable second-line center and one able to handle the job after two years of inefficiency from Stephen Weiss, Richards saw the Wings as a way to maybe win a third Stanley Cup. A year after the indignity of being bought out by the New York Rangers, Richards said he is "in a different frame of mind after winning a Cup than I was being bought out. I have a little more confidence in myself when teams were talking to me, that I knew I could come in and help. And that's what I plan on doing here." 2

Players such as Brett Hull and Luc Robitaille. Brad Richards saw that and envisioned himself as filling that type of role. "They've had a lot of success in the past bringing in veteran guys and integrating them into a role that fits," said Richards, who arrived in town Thursday morning and participated in an informal skate at Joe Louis Arena for the first time. "I was used to that type of thing in Chicago, going and playing a certain role, not something that I was used to playing in my career, and that prepared me to being openminded to different things," Richards said. "They have a lot of great young players who'll create a lot of enthusiasm and push, and that's something that's always healthy." The fact Richards, 35, joined the Blackhawks last season and was a key part in Chicago winning a Stanley Cup -- he had 14 points (11 assists) in 23 playoff games after scoring 37 points (25 assists) in 76 regular-season games -- also gave him a different mindset after being bought out of his contract the summer before by the New York Rangers. "I'm in a different frame of mind," Richards said. "I had a little more confidence in myself when teams were talking to me. I knew I could come in and help and that's what I plan to do here." Richards hasn't played with anyone else on this current Red Wings roster. He knows Daniel Cleary somewhat from each living in eastern Canada, and has only briefly talked to coach Jeff Blashill. But Richards does know about how well thought of the Red Wings organization is around the league, which was another key point on July 1 when Richards was considering offers as a free agent. "You play around the league, and you know enough players, you get a feel of how different organizations work, and this organization has always been considered if not the best, it's right there with any other," Richards said. "They also seem to be competing every year for a chance in the playoffs and that's all I want." Prospects Tournament The annual NHL Prospects Tournament begins Friday at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City and runs through Tuesday. Forwards Anthony Mantha (2013), Dylan Larkin (2014) and Evgeny Svechnikov (2015) all first-round picks are on the Red Wings roster, along with forwards Andreas Anthanasiou and Tyler Bertuzzi. It s crazy thinking the season is starting, and playing a game, Larkin said. 4

5 Prospects from the Hurricanes, Blackhawks, Blue Jackets, Stars, Wild, Rangers and Blues also will participate in the tournament. The Red Wings play the Hurricanes at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Quincey is OK Red Wings defenseman Kyle Quincey said he is fully recovered from May ankle surgery that removed bone chips. It was successful surgery and I feel better than last year, said Quincey, who likely will be on a third defensive pairing with Brendan Smith or Jakub Kindl. Detroit News LOADED:

6 Second blighted Red Wings arena site hold out homeowner asking $3.7M Ian Thibodeau By Ian Thibodeau on September 10, 2015 at 4:57 PM, updated September 10, 2015 at 5:05 PM DETROIT - The owners of a blighted, boarded up house less than a block away from the new $450 million Detroit Red Wings arena development aren't subtle in their listing. They want $3.7 million for their 3,485-square-foot home and the lot it sits on. Signs posted on the house say the land is to be sold for development. The home on the site doesn't have a roof. The sole photo on the zillow.com listing show boarded up front windows and a boarded up door and a warped stairway to the front porch. On the listing, the owner stresses that the lot -- not the house -- is one block from the new Wings stadium, which has been temporarily dubbed The Detroit Events Center. The listing states that the house or lot "faces Park Ave and Woodward, good for signage (or) logo, one block from new M-1 rail line, across street from new DTE substation, good for data processing. One half block from Temple which will be major street for travel after stadium is complete. This parcel is only parcel available for sale in new entertainment district, suitable for national corporation/ bar, restaurant, bank, mixed use. Also available for lease. (sic)" Much like the eight-bedroom house that went up for $3.5 million earlier this week, seller specifies that the lot and home will fall under Olympia Development of Michigan's The District Detroit, a 50-block sprawl from the new arena. All told, the entire project will cost $650 million. The Park Avenue house is in much worse shape than the slightly smaller 2712 Cass Avenue around the block. It's unclear from the listing when the last time someone lived in the Park Avenue house was. It's for sale by owner online. According to Zillow, the lot went up for sale in June 2014 for $3.7 million, was taken down that November, put back up in May 2015 for $2.3 million and then the price was bumped to $3.7 million in August. The listing agent or owner does not say how many bedrooms or bathrooms are in the house. Michigan Live LOADED:

Brad Richards has no ties to the area or the organization, but the franchise's reputation played a big part in luring the veteran center to Detroit. "I've obviously admired this team for a long time and no different the last few years," Richards said. "Even though they hadn't made a long run, they're right there, so that's always an impression. I'm very excited to be a Red Wing and play with some of these great players." Richards arrived in town Thursday morning and headed to Joe Louis Arena for his first informal skate with new teammates. "I haven't skated this week, just packing the house," Richards said. "It's good to get a sweat and meet some of the guys. It'll make tomorrow a little easier." The Red Wings signed Richards, 35, to a one-year, $3 million contract, which includes an additional $1 million in potential bonuses, on July 1. He's a skilled player who provides offense, depth at center and winning experience. He won the Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay in 2004 and Chicago this past season. He didn't speak with former Red Wing Marian Hossa, his teammate on the Blackhawks, about this organization. He didn't need to. "You play around the league, you know enough players over the years that you get a feel for how organizations work and this has always been considered, if not the best organization, it's right there with any other organization," Richards said. "I just left a really good one and one before that in New York (the Rangers) that does everything first-class and that's all I heard here. "They seem to be competing every year for a chance in the playoffs and that's all I ever want." Richards' production has declined in recent years he had career lows of 12 goals and 37 points (excluding the lockout-shortened 2013 season) with the Blackhawks. He'll eventually settle into a second- or third-line role and play regularly on the power play. However, he'll start the season centering the top line, per coach Jeff Blashill, since Pavel Datsyuk is out until late October or November following ankle surgery. "(Blashill) talked to me a couple times, so did Kenny (general manager Holland), just making me feel part of the family here," Richards said. "Obviously, I know what I'm brought here to do and what I want to do and now it's up to me to go and do it." 7

8 Richards said the Red Wings have had success in recent years brining in veterans and plugging them into specific roles. "I was used to that in Chicago, going in and playing a certain role," Richards said. "It's not something that I was used to playing in my career and I think that prepared me for being open-minded to different things. "I know that they have lots of great players here, young players that will create a lot of enthusiasm and push and that's something that's always healthy. I'm in a different frame of mind after winning a Cup than I was (after being) bought out (by the Rangers following the season). I wasn't looking for as much. I had a little more confidence in myself. When teams were talking to me, I knew I could come in and help. That's what I plan to do here." He sees no reason why this team can't be highly competitive, after watching it battle eventual Eastern Conference champion Tampa Bay in a seven-game first-round series. "I just played a team (Tampa Bay in the Cup finals) that they (Red Wings) had on the ropes," Richards said. "Watching that series from afar, everybody kind of thought Detroit had them. We kind of thought the Wings were going to close that series out. They didn't, that shows you how close it is. "I don't see why they can't compete. 9 8-bedroom house feet from new Red Wings arena site in Detroit wants $3.5M Ian Thibodeau By Ian Thibodeau on September 10, 2015 at 12:15 PM, updated September 10, 2015 at 1:47 PM DETROIT - While the $450 million new Red Wings arena in Detroit hasn't even had its foundation poured yet, property values appear to be shooting up. An eight-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bath house that backs up to the new arena site hit the market this week for $3.5 million. The 3,344-square-foot single family 2712 Cass Avenue home is listed on realtor.com as a historic home in the "University" neighborhood. Listing agent Catina Willis told MLive that the property is not a foreclosure, and it hasn't been repossessed. The owner wants to sell it. No one answered the door when MLive went knocking in April. The resident of the house next door said he didn't want to talk about the new Detroit Events Center. Willis said the home is "available for anyone who wants to buy." There is only one exterior photo of the house posted online. Private showings must be scheduled online. The unit for sale is listed as an eight-bedroom home, but according to the property details online, the home has 15 rooms and two kitchens. It sits on a 4,792-square-foot lot that backs up to the development zone. If things go according to Olympia Development of Michigan's plans, the homes (if left standing) would be engulfed by The District Detroit, a massive redevelopment of the 50- block area surrounding the arena site. When asked what about the home warrants at $3.5 million price tag, Willis said that there's some value in the land. It's up to whoever buys the home whether they want to fix it up or not, she said. The home is mere steps from the planned development zone of the Detroit Events Center, which is expected to be operational by the 2017 NHL season. And while the house sits on land that might be some of the most valuable in the city at the moment, it needs work. In April, the front porch and steps were warped, unstable and splintering, paint, peeling. Just last week news broke that Detroit Tigers first basemen Miguel Cabrera bought a gated, 11,176-square-foot mansion in Grosse Pointe Farms for $3.2 million. That home had six bedroom, seven bathrooms and a six-car garage. The Cass Avenue home is also just around the corner from the historic Masonic Temple. 9

11 Red Wings top draft pick Evgeny Svechnikov to get first taste of NHL hockey in next two weeks Brendan Savage By Brendan Savage on September 10, 2015 at 12:06 PM Evgeny Svechnikov won't get an opportunity to play in the NHL for at least another year or two. But the Detroit Red Wings prospects tournament as well as their upcoming training camp will give the club's first-round draft pick his first exposure to NHL players. The Red Wings play the Blackhawks Saturday in the prospects tournament at Centre I.C.E. Arena and Chicago forward Ryan Hartman spent five games in the NHL last season. Then, beginning Sept. 18, Svechnikov will be rubbing shoulders with guys like Henrik Zetterberg, Niklas Kronwall and countryman Pavel Datsyuk every day in the main training camp. "That's my dream coming true," said Svechnikov, who was drafted with the 19th overall pick this year. "I'm so happy to be with the Detroit Red Wings. Now I work for my second dream, playing in the NHL. "Everybody have chance. I have big chance. I want to be there but I just keep going forward myself and we'll see what I can do. It's a great opportunity for me. I'm looking forward to being with the team in the NHL. "It's a great chance right now and I really appreciate this time." First, he'll spend at least one more season and perhaps two with Cape Breton of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where he made an immediate impact during his first season in North America. The 6-foot-2, 199-pound winger ranked second among QMJHL rookies in scoring while finishing third on Cape Breton's team with 32 goals and 78 points in 55 games. His 0.95 points-per-game were second-best among draft eligible QMJHL forwards. Svechnikov appealed to the Red Wings because of his size, soft hands, hockey IQ and ability to play all three forward positions. They see him as an eventual top-six forward in the NHL. "I think I'm power forward with good shot, good skill, hockey sense," Svechnikov said. "I like to shoot, play physical game. "My skating has to improve. Be more balanced, be more strong in my legs. I think that's first of all. Obviously I need physically to be stronger as a hockey player." Before joining Cape Breton, where he'll play again this season, Svechnikov spent two years playing junior hockey for Bars Kazan in his native Russia. He has no regrets about leaving home to play in North America at age

12 "I want to make my dream of playing in the NHL," he said. "It was a great decision for me and my family. It was a pretty easy decision. I kind of want to fill my dreams." Svechnikov, whose younger brother Andrei is projected to be a high pick in the 2018 NHL draft, is the first Russian the Red Wings drafted in the first round since defenseman Max Kuznetsov went 26th overall in Although he's a fan of Datsyuk, Svechnikov said his favorite player growing up was Pavel Bure. He was determined to improve offensively last season and did so by chipping in 12 goals. He also was better in the faceoff circle. Glendening gets under opponents' skin with his physical play and abrasiveness, a much-needed element for a team that seldom fights, making him hard to play against. Coaches can trust him to match up against a top line, which occasionally frees Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg from that responsibility. 13
