Tonight s game is being broadcast on WGR 550 and MSG in Western New York. Buffalo and Washington have played 29 preseason games all-time, including a 1-0 Capitals win in Washington on Sept. 21. The Sabres are in preseason contests against the Capitals. In their preseason history, the Sabres are at Washington and against the Capitals at home; 18 of the 29 preseason games between the teams have been played at neutral site venues, with the Sabres going in those games. The Sabres are since 2000 in preseason games against the Capitals. The teams have split their last four regular-season games, with all four games going to overtime and three of the four decided in the shootout. The Eastern Conference foes will face-off three times throughout the season. Their first meeting of the regular season will be on Saturday, Nov. 22 at Verizon Center. The teams will play the remaining two games in the series just nine days apart, in Washington on March 7 and in Buffalo on March 16. During the preseason, the Sabres have gotten points from 15 different players all of whom except one (Matt Ellis) remain on the training camp roster including goals from seven different players. Chris Stewart leads all Sabres skaters with three points (2+1) in three preseason games. Four different goaltenders have played complete games for the Sabres through four preseason games, with three of them posting a sub-2.00 goals against average and a.931 save percentage or better. The Sabres are all-time in the preseason. Buffalo is in preseason action since the season, including a mark in 2013 and a start this year. These totals only include NHL games; the Sabres also defeated Adler Mannheim, 8-3, as part of the 2011 NHL Premiere Series in Germany. The Sabres will wrap up their preseason schedule in two days when they visit the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday, Oct. 3. Buffalo will open the regular season at home on Thursday, Oct. 9, as they host the Columbus Blue Jackets. The team will then travel to Chicago for their road-opener on Saturday, Oct. 11 against the Blackhawks. 5 Game Recaps Washington 2, Montreal 0 September 28, 2014 Bell Centre * Montreal Joel Ward scored the game-winning goal with 1:29 remaining in the third period and Brooks Laich added an empty netter as the Capitals defeated the Montreal Canadiens 2-0 on Sunday at Bell Centre in Montreal. Andre Burakovsky, Nicklas Backstrom and John Carlson each added an assist. Rookie Liam O Brien registered five hits against Montreal and leads the team with 14 hits this preseason. Goaltenders Justin Peters and Braden Holtby split time in net for Washington and combined to stop all 18 shots they faced. Peters made seven saves and Holtby made 11. The Capitals outshot the Canadiens Washington 5, Boston 4 (OT) September 26, 2014 Verizon Center * Washington, D.C. Capitals right wing Troy Brouwer scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lead Washington to a 5-4 overtime victory over the Boston Bruins on Sept. 26. Captain Alex Ovechkin scored two power-play goals, registered four shots and tallied four hits. Rookie Liam O Brien, who was named the game s first star, scored his first career NHL preseason goal, tallied an assist and earned five penalty minutes. Brooks Laich earned his first two points of the preseason with two assists and Mike Green tallied an assist and led all skaters in ice time (25:30). Goaltenders Philipp Grubauer and Justin Peters split time in net for Washington. Grubauer started the game and stopped nine of 11 shots he faced, while Peters stopped 10 of 12 shots in relief and earned the win for the Capitals. Boston 2, Washington 0 September 24, 2014 TD Garden * Boston Washington goaltender Braden Holtby stopped all 21 shots he faced in 40 minutes of play on Sept. 24 as the Capitals fell to the Bruins 2-0 at TD Garden. Goaltender Pheonix Copley, who played in net for the Capitals in the third period, stopped eight of the nine shots in relief. Defenseman Mike Green led all skaters in ice time (23:19) and Andre Burakovsky led Washington in shots (4). The Capitals outhit the Bruins Philadelphia 5, Washington 4 September 22, 2014 Wells Fargo Center * Philadelphia Capitals forwards Troy Brouwer and Eric Fehr each recorded a power-play goal and an assist on Sept. 22 against the Flyers as Washington fell to Philadelphia 5-4. John Erskine and Michael Latta each scored their first goal of the preseason, while Dane Byers, Steven Oleksy, John Carlson, Garrett Mitchell, Liam O Brien and Marcus Johansson added their first assists of the preseason. O Brien, who was playing in his first career preseason game, also led all skaters in hits (5). Goaltenders Justin Peters and Philipp Grubauer spilt time in net for Washington, with Peters stopping 12 of 14 shots he faced and Grubauer stopping eight of 11 shots. Capitals center Andre Burakovsky scored a goal in the first period on Sept. 21 as Washington defeated the Buffalo Sabres 1-0 in its preseason opener. Left wing Jason Chimera and right wing Joel Ward each earned assists on Burakovsky s game-winning goal. Rookie goaltender Pheonix Copley earned the win in his NHL preseason debut, stopping all six shots he faced in the first period. Goaltender Braden Holtby played the second and third periods and stopped all 19 shots he faced. Rookie defenseman Tyler Lewington led all skaters in hits (5) in his NHL preseason debut and defenseman Cameron Schilling led Washington in ice time (22:25). Washington Capitals Preseason Notes Holt-beast Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby has stopped all 51 shots he has faced in 110 minutes of ice time this preseason, including 19 shots in Washington s 1-0 win against Buffalo on Sept. 21. Holtby has posted a record in his last three regular-season games against the Sabres. The 6 2, 208-pound goaltender tied his career highs in wins (23) and shutouts (4) during the regular season and ranked tied for third in the NHL in shootout wins (6). Buffalo Hunters Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin registered four points (2g, 2a) in three games against Buffalo last season. Washington has posted a record in its last six regular-season games against the Sabres is against Buffalo in the preseason since The Capitals and Sabres will meet three times during the regular season (Nov. 22, March 7 and March 16). Last We Met Wednesday s game against Buffalo is the teams second meeting this preseason. The Capitals defeated the Sabres 1-0 on Sept. 21 at Verizon Center. 6 A Lot to Laich Brooks Laich scored his first goal of the preseason in Washington s 2-0 win against Montreal on Sunday. Laich ranks tied for first on the team in points (3) and assists (2) this preseason. Andre the Giant Capitals rookie Andre Burakovsky earned an assist on Sunday against Montreal, marking his second of the preseason. Burakovsky registered 87 points (41g, 46a) in 57 games for the Erie Otters (OHL) during the season. The 6 3, 198-pound forward finished the regular season on a seven-game point streak (3/1-3/15: 8g, 9a) and was named the OHL Player of the Month for March. Burakovsky ranked ninth in the OHL in goals this season (41), tied for sixth in power-play goals (15), third in game-winning goals (10) and tied for eighth in plus/minus (+46). The Malmo, Sweden, native was drafted by Washington in the first round, 23rd overall, in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Back-To-Back Games The Capitals begin their second back-to-back set of the preseason on Wednesday at Buffalo. Washington will conclude the backto-back set on Thursday against Philadelphia at Verizon Center. The Capitals are in back-to-back games this preseason and were in back-toback games during the regular season.
