BURNS-ING UP THE SCORESHEET: Brent Burns became the first defenseman in Sharks franchise history to open a season with a five-game point streak, registering seven points (-6=7) from /8 at Los Angeles thru /8 at New Jersey. HELPING HAND Patrick Marleau recorded his 5 th career assist on Oct. vs. Columbus, becoming just the 7 th active NHL player to reach 5 career assists. JOINING ELITE COMPANY Joe Thornton recorded his, th career NHL point on Oct. 8 at New Jersey, becoming just the 46 th player in NHL history to reach that milestone. Thornton joins Jaromir Jagr as the only two active players to have recorded, or more points. 9 SHUTTING EM OUT: Antti Niemi made 4 saves in San Jose s season opener, becoming the first goalie to shut out the defending Stanley Cup champs in their season opener since Toronto s Turk Broda shut out Boston on Nov. 8, 94, and the first Sharks goaltender to register a shutout in a season opener in franchise history. Alex Stalock made all saves in the Sharks second game of the season to give San Jose two consecutive shutouts to start the season. It was the first time in NHL history a team started the season with two shutouts by two different goalies, and just the 7 th time in NHL history a team has had shutouts in their first two games of the season. TOMMY WIN-GOALS Sharks forward Tommy Wingels scored twice on Oct. 8 s opener in Los Angeles, his third career multi-goal game. It marked the second-straight season in which Wingels has scored on Opening Night, and he became the th player in Sharks history to score twice in the season opener. Wingels is just the fourth US-born Sharks player to tally the team s first goal of the season, joining Craig Coxe ('9-9), Matt Carle ('6-7), and Joe Pavelski ('-). Tye McGinn, brother of former Sharks forward Jamie McGinn, made his Sharks debut and recorded an assist, while rookies Mirco Mueller and Chris Tierney made their NHL debuts. Both Mueller (Everett, WHL) and Tierney (London, OHL) were playing in the Canadian Jr. Leagues last season. Tierney recorded his first NHL point, assisting on Tommy Wingels second goal. Mueller recorded his first career NHL assist on Oct. 6 at NY Islanders. CLIMBING THE LADDER Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau are both climbing up the NHL s all-time leader boards in a couple key categories. Marleau currently sits at 44 goals, which ranks T-6 st on the NHL s all-time goals scored list. Thornton is currently 4 th in NHL history for assists (858) and trails Denis Savard by just 7 helpers for rd place. HIT THE ROAD JACK The Sharks play 6 of their first games on the road, the highest percentage of road games in the first quarter of a season (76%) in franchise history.
