Five of those matchups are at home, while the other five are away. October marks San Jose s highest amount of games against the Eastern Conference this season, with the next-highest coming in January (seven games). After this month, San Jose will be done with season series against both Buffalo and the NY Islanders. NEW YORK STATE OF MIND San Jose will play five of its next eight games against teams from New York, facing the Sabres (twice), NY Islanders (twice), and NY Rangers all within a span of 7 days. 5 FROM THE BACK-END Brent Burns tallied his 5 th career point, an assist, on Logan Couture s power-play tally on /4 vs. Philadelphia. He became the first defenseman and just the th player overall from his 3 draft class to reach the 5 point plateau. Burns also became just the third active blueliner to reach 5 points, joining fellow Norris Trophy winners Zdeno Chara and Duncan Keith. FILLING UP THE SCORE SHEET Kevin Labanc had a big night for San Jose, and found his name all over the score sheet on /4 vs. Philadelphia. Labanc scored twice, San Jose s first two goals of the season, and also added six penalty minutes in the Sharks season opener. He became just the 7 th player in Sharks history to post at least two goals and six penalty minutes in the same game, and the first since Jonathan Cheechoo recorded six penalty minutes, three goals and two assists on April 5, 6 vs. Anaheim. UNUSUAL OPENENING OPPONENT Until this season, the Sharks had never opened a season against the Philadelphia Flyers, and 7-8 marked just the second time in team history that the Sharks opened against a team outside of their conference ( vs. NY Islanders). 7-8 is the second time San Jose hosted the Flyers for the Sharks home opener, having also hosted Philadelphia in 3-4, and the third time the Sharks opened their home half of the schedule against a team outside of their own conference: NY Islanders, 3-4 Flyers, 7-8 Bruins. YOUTHFUL EXUBERANCE In 6-7, the Sharks AHL affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda, as one of the youngest teams in the AHL, finished the regular season with the second-best record en route to the franchise s first Western Conference Finals appearance. 9 Mid-Season All-Stars - Troy Grosenick, Daniel O'Regan 6-7 FRANCHISE NOTES: - A year after reaching the Stanley Cup Final, the Sharks clinched a playoff spot for the th time in the last 3 seasons, and the 7 th time in the last 9 seasons. In total, last season marked the 9 th time San Jose has qualified for the playoffs in their 5 NHL seasons. - The Sharks earned their 4 th win of the season on March 9 vs. Washington, the 4 th time they have reached that milestone since the - season. Those 4 instances are the most in the NHL in that span. 6-7 INDIVIDUAL NOTES: - Brent Burns, who became the first Sharks player to win the Norris Trophy as the League s best defenseman, led all NHL defensemen in goals (9) and points (76), setting Sharks single-season franchise records in both categories. He ranked T-3 rd amongst NHL blueliners in assists (47), T- nd in power-play goals (8), and st in game-winning goals, (6). Per the NHL, Burns became the first d-man to post back-to-back 75-point seasons since Brian Leetch in / His 9 goals scored were tied for the 8 th highest single season total by a defenseman in NHL history. - Joe Thornton recorded his, th career assist on March 6 at Winnipeg, becoming just the 3 th player in NHL history to accomplish the feat. of the other players to record, assists are Hall-of-Famers, and the other is Jaromir Jagr. - Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson joined an exclusive club on Jan. 6 vs. Edmonton.
