The Wings kicked off the campaign on Monday night against Colorado and continued hosting red kettles Thursday night against San Jose. For the third consecutive year, Red Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager Ken Holland serves as the Honorary Red Kettle Campaign Chairman. Earlier this week, Red Wings players and executive staff members engaged in a friendly competition, serving as bell ringers at retail locations throughout the metro Detroit area. The Wings raised more than $,5 over a two-hour period, more than 8 times the daily amount for an average kettle. Executive Vice President and General Manager Ken Holland and Head Coach Mike Babcock captured bragging rights for the second straight year as their kettle topped out at just over $,. Players who participated in this year's friendly competition included Kirk Maltby, Jiri Hudler, Valtteri Filppula, Niklas Kronwall and Brett Lebda. Last year's campaign in Metro Detroit raised just over $8. million and this year's goal is $8.5 million to sustain its annual services. Lifetime Series Tonight's game is the second of four meetings between the Red Wings and Kings this season. Detroit defeated Los Angeles 4- in a shootout at the Staples Center on October 7th. Henrik Zetterberg, Valtteri Filppula and Marian Hossa scored for the Red Wings in regulation and Pavel Datsyuk buried the game winner in the shootout. Oscar Moller, Kyle Calder and Alexander Forlov scored for the Kings. Chris Osgood made 6 saves on 9 L.A. shots while Jason LaBarbera made 4 saves on 7 shots by Detroit. The Red Wings and Kings will face-off for the 7rd time tonight. Detroit has won 7 games in the all-time series. The Kings have won games ended in a tie. Ty Conklin made 4 saves for his sixth NHL shutout and Pavel Datsyuk had two goals and two assists to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 6- win over the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night. San Jose has the NHL's best record (5-4-), but the Sharks lost for the second straight night. They fell at Columbus - in overtime on Wednesday. The Sharks are on pace to challenge Detroit's NHL record of 6 wins in a season in and the Montreal Canadiens' mark of points in The Red Wings have the second-best record in the Western Conference (-6-4), but they haven't played well, particular defensively. Detroit has had a habit of falling behind early and then being forced to rally late. "So far, it's our first real good game. I think, so far, it's our best game," Datsyuk said. "Now we just need to keep going, keep going, grind like that, play our game." Marian Hossa had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings, and Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula and Brad Stuart also scored. Brett Lebda added two assists in Conklin's second shutout of the season. "I think we all are confident in here. I think we all have a strong belief that we're one of the top clubs, for sure, in the league," Conklin said. Evgeni Nabokov stopped shots for San Jose, who played for the third time in four nights. "We can use the excuse that we had three games in four nights, but that's just an excuse," Sharks forward Ryane Clowe said. "Just embarrassing to play these guys... like we're happy with ourselves." It was an unhappy return for San Jose coach Todd McLellan, who was a Detroit assistant under head coach Mike Babcock the past three seasons. "Just flat out they were better in every situation," McLellan said. "We can come down off of our perch and everybody can look at each other and realize that we've still got

9 some work to do." Detroit scored on successive shots in a span of :7 late in the first period to take a - lead after San Jose had carried most of the play to that point. Franzen opened the scoring with 5:9 left in the first with his 4th goal. He beat Nabokov over his glove with a wrist shot from the high slot on the rush. "I think we played well in the first period, but I think that first goal changed the momentum and changed everything," said Nabokov, who thought he should have made the save. "It was such an easy shot. I thought I had it in my glove." Datsyuk also scored from the high slot, putting a wrist shot between Nabokov's pads with 4: left. Hossa made it - at 9:8 of the second period when he snapped a one-timer off Nabokov's blocker and into the top of the net from the high slot. It was Hossa's 7th goal. "We really responded well as a team," Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom said. "We didn't give them any goals and took the game over in that second period." Filppula got his fifth goal, 7:5 into the second period, when he tapped a cross-crease pass into the empty net. Datsyuk's second of the game and th of the season came with 7: left. Defenseman Jordan Leopold scored on a penalty shot and added an assist and backup goalie Andrew Raycroft made 4 saves and the Avalanche held on for a - win over Detroit on Monday night. Wojtek Wolski and Paul Stastny also scored for Colorado. With the Avalanche leading -, :5 into the third period, the Red Wings' Brett Lebda was caught covering the puck in the Detroit crease. That calls for a penalty shot with the coach choosing who will take it. Colorado coach Tony Granato picked Leopold because he does well in team breakaway and shootout drills. "He was the guy we were comfortable that we could put in that situation," Granato said. The defenseman then consulted Budaj on strategy. "I asked Buds (Peter Budaj) would my warm-up move work," Leopold said. "And he said 'go with it."' The move, a little fake and a backhand under the crossbar, was perfect as Chris Osgood stayed back in his crease and was beaten for a - Avalanche lead and Leopold's fifth goal. "I was thinking maybe shoot, because I'm a D-Man and keep it simple," he said. "But I was taking what he was giving." Tomas Holmstrom and Marian Hossa scored for Detroit. Osgood, whose struggles this season continued despite a --4 record, stopped 4 shots. "They got the puck deep on us and tried to drive behind our D," Holmstrom said. "They had the momentum going, too." Hossa brought the Red Wings within a goal 7:7 into the third period when he scored from the left circle off a face off won by Henrik Zetterberg. It was Hossa's 6th goal. "As the game goes on we begin to pick it up and we're a much better team," Hossa said. Holmstrom cut the Avalanche's lead to - at 9: of the second period. With a delayed penalty being called on Colorado and Osgood pulled for a sixth attacker, Holmstrom scored on a goal-mouth scramble for his ninth goal. Colorado scored on two of its first four shots to take a - lead 4:4 into the game. Wolski capitalized on a turnover by Johan Franzen in the neutral zone and scored on a breakaway at :7 for his seventh goal. Holmstrom took a hooking penalty at :49 and it took 45 seconds for Stastny to make it - as he beat Osgood with a shot from the inside edge of the left circle. It was Stastny's seventh goal. "Normally we have a pretty professional group," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "Right away we had a turnover and it ended up in our net, then they scored on a power play. I didn't think we played terrible tonight. We did a lot of good things, but if you spot any team two goals, it's going to be tough for you." Notes: Colorado RW Marek Svatos missed his second game because of a back injury.... The Avalanche scored two goals in losing all four games to Detroit last season.... (AP) -After watching the last three games from the bench, Chris Osgood made himself right at home back in the crease. Osgood made 4 saves and turned aside three shootout attempts in the Detroit Red Wings' 5-4 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday night. "The type of competitor he is, he hasn't been happy to see the other goalie out there the last three nights," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "We're always trying to get his competitive juices flowing. He's a competitor. He's a pro and he's one of the best of all time." Osgood has 75 career regular-season victories. "The way it's going I'm just trying to push onward and play better and better," Osgood said. "I'm close to where I want to be but I'm not over that hump yet." Osgood closed out the shootout with a pad save on Shane Doan's attempt to secure the victory - Detroit's fifth in six games. "Give him credit," Doan said. "He did his job and our shooters didn't do ours." Johan Franzen scored his second goal of the game with 9.9 seconds left to force overtime, and Henrik Zetterberg and Jiri Hudler scored in a shootout for the Red Wings. "When we get down one or two goals we put everything out there," Franzen said. "We play better that way than when we have a lead. It gives us confidence we can come from behind. If you do it once, you can do it again." Franzen sent the game to overtime when he beat Ilya Bryzgalov from the low slot with the Red Wings on the power play and with a sixth attacker on the ice. Bryzgalov, who finished with 4 saves in regulation, flung his stick into the left corner after Osgood's game-ending save in the shootout. Phoenix defenseman Zbynek Michalek had been whistled for delay of game when his clearing attempt went over the glass with : to go. "It's clearly the right call but it just happened," Coyotes coach Wayne Gretzky said. "With the way the ice is at that point in the game, the puck's rolling and it just happened." Steven Reinprecht gave Phoenix a 4- lead with 4:4 left with help from a friendly post.
