Pittsburgh increased their lead midway through the second, but Nikolai Zherdev responded just 81 seconds later to pull the Rangers back to within one. Petr Prucha notched the game-tying goal at 14:03 of the third period to send the contest into overtime. After a scoreless extra frame, the Rangers converted their first three shootout attempts, getting goals from Markus Naslund, Zherdev and Fredrik Sjostrom, and Henrik Lundqvist (29 saves) stopped one of two shots to give New York the victory. Florida notched their fourth unanswered goal at 1:00 of the final frame, and the Rangers were unable to beat Panthers' goaltender Craig Anderson (37 saves). 3 November, 2008 : Rangers 4 at Panthers 3 (SO): The Blueshirts jumped out to a two-goal lead in the opening minutes with goals from Nikolai Zherdev and Dan Fritsche at 1:53 and 2:39 of the first period, respectively. The Panthers responded with a Radek Dvorak (one goal and one assist) goal midway through the opening frame to cut New York's lead in half. Jay Bouwmeester's (one goal and one assist) power play tally in the closing minutes of the second period tied the score at two goals apiece. In the third, Aaron Voros gave the Rangers the lead at 7:04, but Florida answered with 1:33 remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime. After a scoreless extra frame, Henrik Lundqvist (38 saves) turned aside two of three shootout attempts, and both Markus Naslund (one assist) and Zherdev converted their chances to give the Blueshirts the win. Ryan Malone tied the game less than two minutes later with a power play tally, but Naslund reclaimed the lead for the Blueshirts with his own power play goal at 17:57 of the second period. The Lightning pulled their goalie for an extra attacker late in the third period, and Mark Recchi tied it up with 50 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. After a scoreless extra frame, Naslund and Nikolai Zherdev (two assists) converted their attempts and Henrik Lundqvist (27 saves) turned aside two of two in the shootout to give New York the win. Blair Betts tied the game at one goal apiece midway through the first period, assisted by Nikolai Zherdev (three assists) and Michal Rozsival. Brandon Dubinsky (one goal and one assist) gave the Blueshirts the lead early in the middle frame and, on the goal, Zherdev recorded his 200th NHL point with an assist. New York doubled their advantage in the third period with a power play tally by Dan Girardi, and Scott Gomez clinched the win with an empty netter in the game's final minute.
