Jaclyn Purvine was the hero for the n/a conf w-l n/a n/a Trojans on Friday night, scoring a goal four minutes into the overtime period to give Little Rock the sudden-death victory. 2 goals 4 2 Megan Swanson has started both games in goal for the Trojans, making eight 1 assts 5 1 total saves in 169 minutes of play. No Trojan has played all 184 minutes of 5 points 13 5 action this season, but senior defender Lisa Ryan is closest with 182. Nine players have 4 ga 1 4 started both games. The Trojan soccer team had its bestever 1.96 gaa season in 2016 with a program-record 12 wins and six conference wins. The team finished third in the Sun Belt, its highestever 8 saves 6 9 finish. The Trojans were picked to finish third in the Sun Belt when the league released its preseason poll last week. Senior Quin Wilkes and junior Arola Aparicio were named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt team by the league s coaches. THE SERIES AGAINST TEXAS Little Rock and Texas have faced each other four times in their history, though the teams first meeting in 1993 was when Texas was a club program, not a varsity sport. Including that 1993 game, the Trojans are lifetime against the Longhorns. In their most recent meeting, Little Rock defended well and forced a 0-0 tie on the road in WE ARE LITTLE ROCK The athletic teams representing the University of Arkansas at Little Rock are now referred to as Little Rock in all instances. 3 THE SERIES AGAINST MISSOURI STATE Little Rock will be taking on Missouri State for the 19th time when the two schools meet on Sunday. The Trojans historically had little success against the Bears and are 4-14 all-time. However, all four of Little Rock s wins have come in the teams last six meetings. The Trojans are 4-2 against the Bears dating back to 2011 including a 2-0 win on the road last season. A WIN AGAINST MISSOURI STATE WOULD be Little Rock s second consecutive win over Missouri State. LITTLE ROCK VS. THE MISSOURI VALLEY Little Rock has played almost none of the current members of the Missouri Valley Conference, and the Trojans 4-19 record lifetime against those schools is owed largely to its 4-14 record all-time against Missouri State. Little Rock has an 0-3 record against Evansville and an 0-2 record against Illinois State. The Trojans have never faced Bradley, Drake, Indiana State, Loyola Chicago, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois or Wichita State. PURVINE S BIG STRIKE Jaclyn Purvine had a huge moment to begin the 2017 season for Little Rock, scoring an overtime game-winner against UCA in the 94th minute on Friday night. Purvine got the ball in the midfield, dribbled into open space and had no one challenging her. Still a long way from goal, Purvine rifled the ball into the top left corner of the net to start the season with a victory for the Trojans. APARICIO GETS ON THE BOARD Arola Aparicio had a nice start to her season as well on Friday, scoring a goal in the 13th minute against the rival Bears. Aparicio volleyed a long Doro Greulich pass high over a charging UCA keeper and gave Little Rock an early 1-0 lead. Aparicio, an All- Sun Belt Preseason selection, scored five goals for the Trojans in NEWCOMERS IN GOAL Little Rock entered the 2017 season with no goalies in the roster who had played college soccer and a wide open battle at that position. Through two games, two have gotten a chance to play for the team. Megan Swanson got both starts for Little Rock, playing 169 minutes and making eight saves. Kelly Hogan another freshman played the final 14 minutes of Little Rock s loss at Memphis on Sunday night. Hafdis Gunnarsdottir and transfer Kate Hamilton have yet to see the field. EIGHT START BOTH Little Rock has used 13 different starters in its first two games, meaning nine Trojans got the start in both games. Jaclyn Purvine, Arola Aparicio, Doro Greulich, Lillian Davis, Quin Wilkes, Liesa Seifert, Sairra Tucker, Megan Swanson and Lisa Ryan have all started both games. Ryan has the most minutes on the team so far with 182. TROJANS PICKED THIRD When the Sun Belt Preseason poll was released in early August, Little Rock found itself near the top of the conference. The Trojans finished third in the league preseason poll, matching their highestever finish from the 2016 season. In a very tight poll, Little Rock earned three first-place votes and finished with 106 total points. South Alabama was picked as the league favorite with 109 points in the poll and three first-place votes. Coastal Carolina was second in the poll with 108 points but led the conference with four first-place votes. TWO EARN ALL-SBC PRESEASON HONORS Senior forward Quin Wilkes and junior midfielder/ forward Arola Aparicio both earned a spot on the Sun Belt Preseason All-Conference Team thanks to their tremendous seasons in Both players led the team with five goals, and Wilkes had a teamhigh 14 points. Aparicio did lots of damage in the league, scoring all five of her goals against conference opponents. WILKES RISING UP THE CAREER RANKINGS With her goal against ULM in the 2016 Sun Belt Quarterfinals, senior Quin Wilkes solidified her status among the top-10 goal scorers and pointgetters in program history. Wilkes is now ranked No. 9 all-time in program history in career goals and points and No. 12 all-time in program history in assists. She scored two goals in an exhibition win over Northwestern State on August 12, showing that she s ready to keep up the scoring pace in NEW KIDS IN THE ROCK Little Rock fans will see 11 new faces on the roster for the 2017 season. Nine of those 11 will be freshmen while one will be a sophomore and one will be a junior. Five of the Trojan newcomers are from out of the country including three from Iceland, one from Spain and one from Germany. NEW PROGRAM WINS RECORD With its 2-0 victory over ULM in the Sun Belt Tournament Quarterfinals, Little Rock set a new program record for wins in a single season on The Trojans picked up their 12th victory, topping the 2014 team s 11 wins. That season s schedule was much weaker, though, and the Trojans only finished eighth in the Sun Belt Conference that year. BEST-EVER CONFERENCE FINISH The Trojan soccer team had its best-ever season in the Sun Belt Conference in 2016, finishing with a program-record six league wins and earning the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament. The team s previous best-ever conference finish was the No. 5 seed in Before 2015, Little Rock had never finished better than sixth in the league. ALL-SUN BELT POSTSEASON HONORS Four Trojans were named to the All-Sun Belt Conference teams at the end of the 2016 season, more than ever in a single season in team history. Arola Aparicio was named All-Sun Belt First Team after finishing with five goals in conference play. Doro Greulich, Quin Wilkes and Mikayla Uyokpeyi were all named to the Sun Belt s All-Conference Second Team. All four earned postseason league honors for the first time in their careers. Little Rock had never earned more than two end-of-year conference honors in a single season before (2002, 2015). HIGHEST EVER RPI The Little Rock soccer team ended the season with an RPI of 92, the team s best-ever RPI to complete a season in team history. The Trojans had never broken an RPI of 100 before the 2016 season and had an RPI as high as 83 in the middle of last season. COACH ADRIAN BLEWITT Adrian Blewitt was named Little Rock s head soccer coach in December 2012, and he was immediately tasked with turning around a struggling program. After four years, the Trojans have been completely turned around into one of the top programs in the Sun Belt Conference. Little Rock doubled its win total from 2012 to 2013, reaching the Sun Belt Conference Tournament for the first time since Ariel Galletti was named to the All-Sun Belt First Team, and the Trojans scored five more goals while allowing 41 fewer goals from their opposition. The following year, Little Rock more than doubled its win total once again. The Trojans finished the 2014 season with an record, the first winning record in school history. Little Rock also set a school record for wins in a year with 11 and had program-bests in goals scored, team goals against average and shutouts. The Trojans had an incredible start to the season, beginning with nine consecutive victories that set a Little Rock record in any sport for the most wins to open a season. In 2015, more team records were broken. Little Rock finished the season in fifth place in the Sun Belt Conference, the team s highest-ever finish. The Trojans made the league tournament for the third consecutive year while setting the program record for goals against average (1.07). Little Rock tied Texas and took Ole Miss to overtime while goalkeeper Sara Small had the best GAA in team history (0.97). But 2016 was the best season in program history, as Blewitt led the Trojans to a record, setting a new program record for wins as well as conference wins with six. The Trojans earned the No. 3 seed in the Sun Belt Tournament to break the 2015 squad s record for highestever league finish. Little Rock then won its first tournament game since 2009 and also re-set the program record for single-season goals against average (0.84). Blewitt now has a career head coaching record of with women s teams and overall. With the Trojans, he is In 18 years as a head coach, Blewitt led his teams to appearances in the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament and six conference championships, and he has won four conference or region Coach of the Year honors. On three separate occasions, Blewitt s teams have finished the year ranked in the top 10 nationally. Blewitt compiled a overall record as a head men s and women s soccer coach at NCAA Division II schools Lees-McRae College and Lenoir- Rhyne University, including a mark in his final two seasons as head coach at Lenoir-Rhyne. A native of Grimsby, England, Blewitt and his wife Tamara have one daughter, JoElle.
