The Golden Gophers return to the top-10 marks the 19th time in the past 21 seasons the team has placed among the country s 10 best at the national tournament. Coming into this season, there were some challenges. If you look at those early rankings, I think a lot of people didn t believe we could have the type of season and the success that we did, said Head Coach Brandon Eggum. I'm really proud of that, of overachieving. I have a lot of respect for the guys on our team. They did a great job of staying together, staying focused and working hard. It was amazing to watch the progress these guys made from the start of the season to now. The Gophers had one finalist, Ethan Lizak, in the 125-pound bracket, who fell in a tight match to now four-time Big Ten Champion Nathan Tomasello. The Gophers as a team finished in seventh place, and had three wrestlers compete in the final session with first, third and fifth place on the line. Minnesota had three wrestlers finish better than what they were seeded at the tournament. Lizak, Steve Bleise and Brandon Krone all finished higher than their seeding at the beginning of the championships. THORN EARNS AT-LARGE BID Minnesota would add a seventh NCAA participant during the at-large process. The NCAA awarded 141-pound wrestler Tommy Thorn to one of the six at-large positions for the mid- March tournament. Thorn, a junior, will make his third straigth appearance, and will look to return to All-American status after finishing eighth at last year's NCAAs in St. Louis. Thorn is also the third of his siblings to become a wrestling All-American for the University of Minnesota (Mike and David). RETURNERS TO THE NCAAs The Maroon and Gold will return six wrestlers who competed at the 2017 NCAA Championships. Five of them wrestled for the Gophers while Steve Bleise makes his first appearance for the Gophers after transfering from Northern Illinois. Ethan Lizak returns after finishing as the national runner-up last season in the 125-pound division. Mitch McKee returns after he finished in the round of 12 as a true freshman last season. Thorn aims to become a two-time All-American at 141-pounds. Bleise was also one round away last season at Northern Illinois in the round of 12. Jake Short and Nick Wanzek will also shoot for All-American status after finishing in the round of 12 last season. Brandon Krone is the only non-returner, as he will make his NCAA Championships debut at 184-pounds. 2

6 GOPHER COACHING STAFF HEAD COACH BRANDON EGGUM Brandon Eggum completed his first season as the Gophers head coach in after spending the previous five seasons serving as the program s head assistant coach. This is Eggum's 17th on the wrestling team staff. Prior to assuming an assistant coach role in 2004, Eggum served as the team s strength and conditioning coordinator ( ). Following a decorated career as a Gopher wrestler, Eggum joined the staff in and has since helped train and develop nine individual national champions, 27 individual conference champs and 66 All-Americans. The team success during that time has also been remarkable, a run which has included all three of the program s national titles, five Big Ten championships and seven National crowns. Since joining the staff, Eggum has played a part in national title runs by Luke Becker, Jared Lawrence, Dustin Schlatter and Jayson Ness, as well as two-time champions Damion Hahn, Cole Konrad and Tony Nelson. All seven of those young men also won Big Ten titles with Eggum on staff, but the list of Big Ten champs during Eggum s tenure also includes: Garrett Lowney, Owen Elzen, Ryan Lewis, Leroy Vega, Jacob Volkmann, Mack Reiter, C.P. Schlatter, Roger Kish, Mike Thorn, Kevin Steinhaus, Dylan Ness and Chris Dardanes. The list of All-Americans under Eggum s watch goes on even longer. Prior to his coaching career, Eggum was a four-time letterwinner for the Gophers from 1997 to As a sophomore, Eggum earned an All-America certificate at 177 pounds. In 1999, he bumped up to 184 pounds, where he would place second and third at the next two NCAA Championships, respectively. Eggum also won the Big Ten title at his weight both of those seasons and helped Minnesota win the 1999 Big Ten championship, the program s first since Eggum s name still litters the program s record books as well. His 115 career wins and his.833 career winning percentage (115-23) are both among 25 best in Gopher history, while his 61 dual victories is tied for 12th. As impressive as Eggum was on the mat, he also stood out in the classroom as a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in May 2000, with a B.S. in Applied Economics. A native of Sidney, Mont., Eggum currently resides in Stillwater, Minn., with his wife Katrina, son Greyson, and two daughters, Lillian and Monroe.
