Boston Bruins Bruins shake off triple-overtime loss in Game 1 By ANDREW SELIGMAN AP Sports Writer / June 13, 2013 CHICAGO (AP) All Claude Julien could do was appreciate the moment. Never mind that the Boston Bruins lost, that a key player in Nathan Horton was injured and that they trail the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup finals. That was one epic series opener, a 4-3 triple-overtime thriller that ranked as the fifth-longest finals game in NHL history. I even talked about it with my management, Julien, Boston s coach, said Thursday. I said, You know, in reality, it was a great hockey game. You watch the video afterward and you see the excitement and the chances and everything else, the only thing I would be mad about is the fact that we didn t win. Other than that, this was a great hockey game for people to watch. It was a great hockey game. I thought both teams played well. I don t think there should be any disappointment in what happened last night, except for us not getting the win that we wanted. No matter what happens in Game 2 on Saturday, it will be just about impossible to match that opener. The first Stanley Cup final between Original Six franchises got off to a rousing start, with the Blackhawks rallying from two goals down in the third period to tie it and Chicago s Corey Crawford making one big save after another, particularly after regulation. There was a close call in the closing seconds of the second OT when the puck deflected off Jaromir Jagr and hit the post, and the game finally ended when the Blackhawks Michael Roszival delivered a soft shot from the right point that deflected off Dave Bolland and Andrew Shaw before slipping past Tuukka Rask. I'm sure we captured a few more fans (Wednesday) night with the excitement, and I'm sure it would be a lot better if we came out on top, Torey Krug said. Instead, they re down in this series after winning five in a row and nine of 10. It s not exactly foreign territory for the Bruins, though. They blew a 3-1 series lead to Toronto in the opening round and were trailing by three in the seventh game. Yet, somehow, they managed to pull that one out and roll past the New York Rangers in five games, then sweep Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins. When they won the championship in 2011, it wasn t an easy ride, either. Boston started with back-to-back losses to Montreal in Round 1 that year and fell behind Vancouver 2-0 in the Stanley Cup finals before rallying to win in seven games. Dropping Game 1 to Chicago? You get on with it, turn the page, Andrew Ference said. Whether it s a goal, whether it s a game or whether it s a play, tough luck. That s the game. What are you going to do? You re going to make a lot of great plays and a lot of lucky bounces are going to happen for you as well. Everybody has played enough hockey on this team and for the guys that haven't, they re surrounded by guys that can let them know that as well. One unfortunate bounce for the Bruins came on Johnny Oduya s tying goal for Chicago with 7:46 left in regulation. His long shot would have gone wide had it not hit Ference s left skate, but it went into the net instead to knot the game at 3-all. Earlier in the period, it was Shaw picking off a clearing attempt by Krug and feeding Bolland on a two-on-one rush to pull Chicago within one. It didn t help, either, that Horton left the ice in the first OT after getting with Blackhawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson. Part of Boston s top line, he s been a big contributor in the playoffs with seven goals and 11 assists to go with a plus-22 and is day to day. Losing him would be a big blow for a team seeking its second title in three years. But the Bruins have won in the past without him. They did it against Vancouver after he suffered a season-ending concussion in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals, when they started their rally to win the championship. Now, the Bruins are trying to pick themselves up again, their resilience getting another test after an electrifying opener against Chicago. I think playoffs, you need to shake it off win or lose, Patrice Bergeron said. That s something we've always said is to be in the moment, the task at hand. It s going to be no different in Game 2. Put the first game behind you and you worry about that Game 2. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Julien says Nathan Horton is day-to-day Posted by Fluto Shinzawa Globe Staff June 13, :40 PM CHICAGO Nathan Horton is day-to-day with an undisclosed injury, according to Bruins coach Claude Julien. The right wing suffered the injury during a power play in the first overtime of Game 1 Wednesday night. Horton was hurt while pushing Chicago defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson. Horton stopped playing, doubled over, and skated to the bench. He retreated to the dressing room and didn t return. Horton had suffered an upper-body injury during a fight with Pittsburgh's Jarome Iginla April 20 and missed the last five regular-season games. If Horton can t play in Game 2 Saturday, Jordan Caron would be the most likely candidate to enter the lineup. Caron is one of three available forwards, along with Jay Pandolfo and Carl Soderberg. Caron is a right wing who can battle along the walls and jam in front of the net when he s playing well. Tyler Seguin projects to replace Horton on the first line alongside Milan Lucic and David Krejci. Seguin took most of those shifts in Game 1 after Horton departed and showed some jump. Seguin nearly set up Kaspars Daugavins for the winner in triple overtime. Seguin also assisted on Patrice Bergeron s third-period power-play goal. He skated. He had some chances, Julien said. He s got speed up there with them. He s got skill. For him, it s an opportunity right now. He did a great job. We ll see where everybody stands here by Saturday. * Torey Krug acknowledged coughing up the puck on Dave Bolland s thirdperiod goal that brought Chicago within 3-2. The Bruins were changing lines when Krug settled the puck. Krug said he saw a stretched-out Daniel Paille and tried to get him the puck. Andrew Shaw picked off Krug s pass to initiate Bolland s goal. Yes, it was a mistake to throw that puck up the middle, Julien said. But if you look back at the play, I don t think we had a good line change. He didn t have a ton of options. I think there could be some blame shared on that goal. * Neither Julien nor the players are dwelling on the nature of the 4-3 tripleovertime loss. The Bruins are looking ahead to Game 2. What s done is done, Julien said. * Both teams stayed off the ice today. They are scheduled to practice Friday at United Center. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Blackhawks players tired, not overconfident after win Posted by Gary Dzen Boston.com Staff June 13, :10 PM The Blackhawks took a 1-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Final early Thursday morning but didn't rest on their laurels when addressing the media later in the day. Chicago did not practice but will have the chance to do so Friday before Game 2 Saturday. "I think you go into a game knowing you don't get a lot of high-quality chances against Boston," said Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville. "You get a couple fortunate bounces on a couple goals, those are goals you have to score. If you're looking for those perfect plays, they're going to be hard to find." The Blackhawks got fortunate bounces on both the tying goal (off the skate of Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference) and the winning goal (deflected in by Andrew Shaw). Asked if anything surprised him about the Bruins, Quenneville said, " I don't know if it was a surprise, but they're a good hockey team. I know you watch them, now you get to play against them, you see they're fast, maybe faster than you anticipated. "Their top line was extremely dangerous. They've got some guys that can make plays. They got patience with the puck." Blackhawks players said Thursday they were naturally tired after playing into three overtimes, but a day off should help. "I think having the two-day break between Game 1 and 2 is huge," said defenseman Brent Seabrook. " Same as last night. Get a lot of rest, stay hydrated, get as much healthy, good food in your system as you can. Just get ready and focus for the next one." Said forward Marian Hossa, "To tell you the truth, fall asleep around 3:00. Woke up early. I think my neighbor decide he going to drill in the morning. That was unpleasant (laughter). "We are lucky, like Brent said, we got extra day, you know, to recharge the batteries and get back on Game 2." Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Blackhawks beat Bruins 4-3 in 3OT Cup opener By JAY COHEN AP Sports Writer June 13, 2013 CHICAGO (AP) The Chicago Blackhawks know all about Andrew Shaw s reputation around the league. They also know the pesky little forward is so much more than just another irritant for opposing players. The diminutive Shaw sparred with Zdeno Chara, dished out nine hits and was in the right place when his team needed him the most Wednesday night in a thrilling start to the Stanley Cup finals. Shaw popped back up after he was knocked down and skated to the front of the goal to get a deflection on Dave Bolland s tip for the winning score in the Blackhawks 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins in the fifth-longest game in the history of the NHL s biggest series. We knew it wasn t going to be pretty at that point, Shaw said. You could tell both teams were physically exhausted. We've preached it: Go to the net, you'll find a way to get a greasy goal. We did a heck of a job of it there in the third overtime. Shaw was knocked down near the boards but got up as the puck came out to Michal Rozsival, who started the winning sequence with a shot from the right point into traffic. Bolland s tip then went off Shaw s right leg and past Tuukka Rask at 12:08 for his fifth goal of the playoffs. And just like that, the longest finals game in five years was over. Shaw skated off to the side and pumped his arms furiously, then joined his teammates for a weary celebration. I mean, I think you could ask players on other teams and they'll tell you that he s not the type of guy that they like to play against, Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews said. But that s what we love about him. We love having a guy like that on our team. He s not afraid. Generously listed at 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds, Shaw still decided to shove the 6-9 Chara after play stopped in the first. Bruins coach Claude Julien called Shaw an agitator who is good at embellishing, too, at times. But he also has four assists in the playoffs after he had nine goals and six assists while playing in all 48 games during the regular season. The bigger the stage, the bigger the challenge, he rises to the occasion, Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. Milan Lucic had two goals and an assist for the Bruins, who had won five straight and nine of 10. Patrice Bergeron scored a power-play goal and David Krejci finished with two assists. Not disappointed in our effort, Julien said. There s certain things you re going to want to fix for next game. But as far as the game is concerned, it was a hard-fought game. Rask made an astounding 59 saves in a finals marathon that surpassed Pittsburgh s 4-3 win over Detroit on June 2, 2008, when Petr Sykora scored at 9:57 of the third overtime. Game 2 is Saturday night at the United Center. That s playoff hockey, Bruins center Rich Peverley said. It s fun to watch, so we'll think about this until we get out of here and then shake it off and get ready for Saturday. Bolland and Johnny Oduya scored in the third period for Chicago, which never would have made it to the third overtime if not for an impressive performance by goaltender Corey Crawford. Brandon Saad had his first goal of the playoffs. Crawford gave the Blackhawks a chance by standing his ground when the Bruins had repeated opportunities in the extra sessions. Shawn Thornton and Daniel Paille skated in for a 2-on-1 in the first OT, and Crawford turned away Thornton on the doorstep. He denied Peverley and Tyler Seguin in rapid succession, and helped Chicago kill off two power plays when it was whistled twice for too many men on the ice. Nathan Horton hit the post in the first extra session, and Chara s slap shot deflected off Jaromir Jagr and then the inside of the right post at the very end of the second overtime. It s exhausting, said Crawford, who had 29 of his 51 saves in the overtimes. I just try to tell myself to make the next save, and we re going to score on our next shot. The action was so fast and furious that it took a toll on the players with Horton skating off during a power play with an injury likely a serious one to leave the ice during that pivotal moment. The Blackhawks trailed 3-1 in the third period before they turned up the pressure on Rask, who stepped up when he faced a similar attack from Pittsburgh in the Eastern Conference finals. This time, he coughed up the lead, hurt by one unlucky carom. First, Bolland converted a nice pass from Shaw for his first goal of the playoffs. Then Oduya s long slap shot went off the left skate of Boston defenseman Andrew Ference and into the net for the tying goal with 7:46 remaining in regulation. Oduya s shot was going wide and wouldn t have gone in if it hadn t hit Ference s skate. We were up two goals and all of a sudden the game was tied, said Chara, who had more than 45 minutes of ice time. We've got two days to regroup and get ready for the next game. The sellout crowd of 22,110 cheered as Krejci and Toews stared each other down for the opening faceoff of the first Stanley Cup finals between Original Six franchises in 34 years. And it almost didn t happen. Game 1 came exactly five months after the official end of a long and bitter lockout. The labor dispute wiped out 510 games, but the sides managed to come together in time to save an abbreviated 48-game season and playoffs. They were rewarded with a final playoff series between two big-market teams with passionate followings and scores of top players. The Blackhawks returned to the Stanley Cup finals for the first time since they won it all three year ago. Boston won the title the following season, and the same core of players is at the center of this year s playoff run. It was enough to attract the attention of President Barack Obama, who has a home in Chicago and made it clear whom he was pulling for before the opener. He wished the Blackhawks good luck over Twitter before adding: hope to welcome you back to the White House again as #StanleyCup champs. Boston countered with a Rolling Stone: Mick Jagger tweeted a photo of himself holding a Bruins jersey before a show at TD Garden. The Bruins got off to fast start behind Lucic, who scored in each of the first two periods. The Blackhawks got on the board when Marian Hossa stole the puck from Dennis Seidenberg in the Boston end and fed Saad, who one-timed it past Rask at 3:08 in the second. Saad s goal ended a scoreless streak of 149 minutes, 36 seconds for Rask dating to Game 3 of the sweep against the Penguins. NOTES: It was the first game between the teams since Boston s 3-2 shootout victory on Oct. 15, There were no games against teams from the other conference during the lockout-shortened season.... This is the first playoff series between the teams since Boston swept Chicago in the 1978 quarterfinals. The Bruins won five of their six previous postseason series against the Blackhawks. 8 Boston Bruins Bruins lose Game 1 in triple OT on double deflection Posted by Steve Silva Boston.com Staff June 13, :58 AM CHICAGO -- There are heartbreakers. There are crushing defeats. And then there's the Bruins 4-3 triple overtime loss to the Blackhawks in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals. Chicago prevailed in the fifth longest game in Stanley Cup finals history when Andrew Shaw deflected a shot off his leg that snuck past Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask with 7:52 remaining in overtime No. 3. Rask made a career-high 59 saves on the night but he could not find a way to stop the puck after a double deflection on a blue line shot by defenseman Michal Rozsival. "It was a soft shot, so I'm probably going to have it if [Shaw] didn't hit it, but it gets deflected, it's tough," Rask said following the epic contest. Way back in regulation, the Bruins had the Blackhawks right where they wanted them when Patrice Bergeron fired one past Chicago goalie Corey Crawford, giving Boston a 3-1 lead with just under 14 minutes to play in the game. Blackhawks center Dave Bolland woke up the crowd of 22,110 strong when he scored with 12 minutes left to bring Chicago to within one. With just under 8 minutes remaining, Johnny Oduya got the Blackhawks even at 3-3 and it would take three more periods before the Chicago comeback was complete. Luck, Shaw said when describing the winning goal. It was kind of [Bryan] Bickell finishing his check. The puck goes to the point. [Michal] Rozsival gets a nice shot through and Bolland got his stick on it. I just happened to be going to the net wide. It kind of went off my leg into the net. Crawford said he knew the game winning goal was on its way if he held his own in net. I was just trying to tell myself to make the next save and then we re going to score on the next shot, Crawford said regarding the third overtime. I was just telling myself that the whole [overtime]. Rask, who gave up four goals Wednesday night after giving up only two the entire Pittsburgh series, was asked if losing the game in three overtimes is worse than losing in regulation. "Yeah, I'm sure like right after, it [stinks] because you're tired and you almost played two games," he said. "But at the end of the day, it's a loss, and that's the only thing that matters." The Game 1 defeat was the second loss in five overtime games for Rask and the Bruins this postseason. Bruins enforcer Shawn Thornton was quick to defend his goaltender. "We can't say enough about him. All year he's been unbelievable for us and it was no different [Wednesday]," Thornton said. "In the second and in the third periods, it could have been a different game if he wasn't standing on his head. He's been amazing for us." After the Bruins took a 2-0 lead in the second period behind Milan Lucic's two goals, Chicago took the game to Boston, pressuring the Bruins throughout the second period before finding the back of the net twice in the third. We had our chances to end it, Lucic said. [Corey Crawford] made some big saves and we didn t capitalize on them, and they won the game. At the end of the day, you ve got to turn the page, and focus on Game 2. Shoulda, woulda, coulda is not going to get you anywhere. It s not going to win us a game in the end. I think we need to focus on Game 2 as fast as we can. If the Bruins didn't have bad luck, they'd have no luck at all in regulation. There were loose pucks in front of Crawford, a shot off the inside of the post, and a big miss on a wide open net by Bruins winger Kaspars Daugavins who was set up nicely by Tyler Seguin. "I take the blame for it," Daugavins said. "I should have put it in there and given the team the lead I had [Crawford] beat, but while I was shooting I got tripped and my hands got tied up. Bruins captain Zdeno Chara was not so quick to place blame on Daugavins for the missed opportunity. "He tried to put the puck in the net," Chara said. "It didn't happen, but everybody is trying to score. Of course we've got each other's backs." The worst break for Boston came when rookie defenseman Torey Krug had a costly turnover that led to the Bolland goal. Shaw intercepted a Krug pass up the middle and worked the puck over to Bolland whose score brought the Blackhawks to within one goal. "We had the game," Rask said. "We're up 3-1 in the third and then a terrible turnover leads to a second goal and then a tough bounce leads to the tying goal, and we just gave it away," Rask said. "Especially going to the third overtime, you're not going to make any fancy backdoor plays. That's what it came down to. I thought we were forcing the play a little too much [in the third overtime] and they just shot the puck and it found its way in and it went in." The Bruins looked sluggish through the first two overtimes, but seemed to have found a second wind in the third OT. I thought that in overtime we got better, Julien said. We got a little stronger. We had some great looks, some great opportunities, we just didn t bury them. Eventually somebody is going to score a goal as fatigue sets in. Not disappointed in our effort. There s certain things you re going to want to fix for next game. But as far as the game is concerned, it was a hard-fought game. So now the Black and Gold and Tired will have two full days to rest before Game 2 of the series Saturday night back at the United Center. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins 5 things learned in Game 1 of Stanley Cup finals By NANCY ARMOUR AP National Writer June 13, 2013 CHICAGO (AP) Five things learned in the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 win in triple overtime over the Boston Bruins in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals on Wednesday night: LET'S PLAY TWO! The Bruins and Blackhawks played a jaw-dropping 1 hour, 52 minutes, 14 seconds of hockey, the fifth-longest game in the history of the Stanley Cup finals. And almost half of that was in overtime, when there are no TV timeouts, just an ice scrape midway through each period, and intermissions. Guys are just glad the game ended, said Andrew Shaw, who took care of that with his double-deflected goal at 12:08 of the third OT. Fans couldn t have asked for a better start to the finals after what has already been a riveting playoffs. The Bruins and Blackhawks combined for seven goals, 117 shots, 120 hits and 114 face-offs. Oh, and the Blackhawks rallied from a two-goal deficit with 13:51 left in regulation. CRAWFORD IS NO. 1: Corey Crawford always seems to be on thin ice with Chicago fans. He isn t flamboyant like Patrick Roy few goalies are and he s one soft goal from fans grumbling that it s time to give Ray Emery a chance. But don t mistake Crawford s laid-back nature for a lack of intensity. He, not the brilliant Tuukka Rask, was the better goalie down the stretch, making 29 of his 51 saves in overtime to keep his teammates in the game. He turned away a breakaway, reduced a Bruins scrum in front of his net to loitering on a power play, no less and made David Krejci look mortal for the first time since the postseason began. Every playoff win he s been big for us and makes huge saves in timely situations, Patrick Sharp said. I think we can finally stop asking questions about whether he s the No. 1 guy. POWER OUTAGE: It s hard to quibble with the Blackhawks, since they did win Game 1. But there are peewee teams that have more effective power plays. Chicago had the Bruins short-handed three times, including a 5-on-3 advantage, and got absolutely nothing to show for it. Nada. Zip. Zilch. As if that s not bad enough, they had all of two shots during those three power plays, and neither came when they had a two-man advantage. HORTON'S STATUS: Boston right winger Nathan Horton never returned after skating off the ice hunched over following a hard hit with 7:20 left in the first overtime. After the game, Bruins coach Claude Julien said it was too soon to say anything about Horton s injury or if he'll be ready for Game 2 on Saturday night. Our doctors haven t finalized the evaluation properly, he said. DON'T PLAN THE PARADE JUST YET: Since the NHL introduced the best-of-seven format back in 1939, almost 77 percent of the teams that won Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals have gone on to hoist the cup. (The exact numbers, for you stat geeks, are 56 out of 73.) That sounds good for the Blackhawks, right? Not so fast, says Boston coach Claude Julien. Of those 17 teams that defied the odds, one was the Boston Bruins. And not only did the Bruins lose Game 1 in 2011, they lost Game 2, too, before rallying to beat the Vancouver Canucks in seven games. That didn t stop us, Julien said, and this won t either. 10 Boston Bruins Rask, Bruins look to bounce back in Game 2 By ANDREW SELIGMAN AP Sports Writer June 13, 2013 CHICAGO (AP) Milan Lucic and the Boston Bruins were rolling along and in command. Then, in a flash, everything changed. In the end, the Boston Bruins went from two goals up to one game down, and now they'll have to pick themselves up after an epic 4-3 triple-overtime loss to the Chicago Blackhawks in the opener of the Stanley Cup finals. What choice do they have? You have to, Lucic said. You re in a position now where you have to. When you come on the road and start the series on the road, you obviously want to get that Game 1. When you re not able to accomplish that, you put all your effort into winning Game 2. It s not the first time the Bruins find themselves trying to peel themselves off the ground. They were all but knocked out in the first round against Toronto, only to come roaring back. For that matter, they dropped the first two games to Vancouver in the 2011 finals before rallying to win the championship in seven games. They'll try to avoid falling into a similar hole in this one when the best-of-seven series resumes Saturday at the United Center. The Bruins might be up 1-0 if not for some key mistakes and bad bounces that spoiled an otherwise solid performance by Tuukka Rask in goal. He did his part. His teammates didn't, and a wild sequence at the end finished off this thriller. Michael Rozsival s shot deflected off Dave Bolland and Andrew Shaw before slipping into the net for the winner at 12:08 of the third OT Wednesday night, bringing a wild game to an appropriate finish. You re not going to make any fancy backdoor plays, Rask said. That s where it came down to. I thought, especially in the last overtime, we were forcing the play a little too much and they just shot the puck and it found its way in and it went in. It was a fitting conclusion to a game that saw the Bruins blow a two-goal lead late in regulation through little fault of Rask's. Had the puck not been deflected, Rask believes he would have stopped it. After all, it wasn t a hard shot by Roszival. He just threw it into traffic. Last time we won the Cup, we lost the first two games to Vancouver. It never stopped us from coming back. This certainly won't, coach Claude Julien said. When you look at the game, it could have gone either way. I thought we had some real great looks in overtime. With a little bit of luck, we could have ended it before they did. Either way, this game more than lived up to the hype. In the first championship meeting in 34 years between Original Six franchises, the Bruins were sailing along with a 3-1 lead after Lucic scored twice and Patrice Bergeron added a power-play goal just over six minutes into the third period. What looked like a safe lead quickly evaporated thanks to one big turnover and one unfortunate bounce for the Bruins. The comeback started when Shaw picked off a clearing attempt by Torey Krug and fed Dave Bolland on a two-on-one rush to pull Chicago within one with 12 minutes left in regulation. Lucic then got stopped on a two-on-one by Corey Crawford midway through the third, and Johnny Oduya tied it for Chicago when his shot from the point deflected off Boston s Andrew Ference defending at the side of the crease and bounced past Rask. Just like that, the game was tied. Rask came in with a league playoff-high.943 save percentage, and he stopped 59 shots in this one. He went 149:36 without giving up a goal before rookie Brandon Saad scored off a feed from Marian Hossa to make it 2-1 and bring the crowd to its feet. They were really roaring in the end, and now, the Bruins will have to shake this one off after winning nine of the previous 10 games. We had the game, Rask said. We re up 3-1 in the third and then a terrible turnover leads to a second goal and then a tough bounce leads to the tying goal, and we just gave it away. It wasn t just the turnover before Bolland s goal, the shot by Oduya that deflected off Ference or the winner. Jaromir Jagr nearly won it on a power play in the closing seconds of the second OT when the puck deflected off him, only to hit the post. And in the third OT, Kaspars Daugavins backhand shot in the crease went wide after Oduya got a stick on him. I guess it will hurt for a little bit, Daugavins said. Got to get a good night s sleep and analyze the things you did wrong and get back and working hard in practice and get ready for Game 2. Already in these playoffs the Bruins blew a 3-1 series lead and then rallied from three down in the third period of the seventh game against Toronto. Then, in a flash, everything changed. In the end, the Boston Bruins went from two goals up to one game down, and now they'll have to pick themselves up after an epic 4-3 triple-overtime loss to the Chicago Blackhawks in the opener of the Stanley Cup finals. It definitely gets tougher and tougher, but at the end of the day you re going to have to find a way to dig deep and try to win the game, Lucic said. I think we played well in all three periods of overtime to give us a chance to win, but unfortunately we didn t get the result. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Bruins now face steep uphill battle By Kevin Paul Dupont Globe Staff June 13, 2013 CHICAGO Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, all 112:08 of it, proved what most of us thought prior to puck drop: The Blackhawks in no way mirror the leaderless, quick-fold Penguins. The Penguins got off on the wrong foot against the Bruins in the Eastern Conference finals and never found their balance, ushered out in four straight games after never holding the lead for one second over four games. Amid the Penguins frustration, they mustered but two goals against Tuukka Rask over four games.. They lost their cool in Game 1, lost via shutout in Game 2, and now they re home, pondering just how many wholesale changes general manager Ray Shero will make before training camp begins soon after Labor Day. The Blackhawks Wednesday night, en route to their 4-3 win in triple overtime, got off to a Penguin-like start here at their cavernous United Center, where the crowd grew nearly sullen when Milan Lucic struck at 13:11 of the first period for his first of two goals. Unable to generate their trademark speed in the first 20 minutes, unable to navigate through Boston s thick, heavy defense once in the offensive end, the Blackhawks landed only eight shots on Rask prior to the first intermission. Not one of those shots caused Cool Hand Tuke much bother. But something happened to Boston s game early in the second period, oddly after Lucic banged home the 2-0 lead with his second of the night with only 51 seconds ticked off the clock. Over the course of the remaining 19:09, the cakewalk turned into a torture chamber. In fact, by the end of third period, with the scored locked at 3-3 (and a string of overtimes awaiting), the Blackhawks outshot the Bruins, 30-13, from the time Boston took the 2-0 lead. Playoff hockey, as great as it is, often doesn t offer a true read when it creeps into first, second, and third overtimes. The winner of a triple-ot game walks (or limps) out of the building with a huge psychological advantage. The loser talks of fighting the good fight, of missed chances, or coming back in a night or two (Saturday in this case) and acting like the loss the night or two before was merely a flesh wound (see: Monty Python). The best read to be gleaned in Game 1 is that the Blackhawks come as advertised. They are fast and strong and they will give the Bruins a far better fight than anything they faced in earlier rounds vs. the Leafs, Rangers, and Penguins. Of the first three opponents, the Leafs were the quickest, most agile, and persistent. They gave the Bruins their most trouble, in part because ex- Bruin Phil Kessel posed a threat nearly every shift he took. It s exactly what the Bruins expected to see from the likes of Pittsburgh s Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, but those two superstars never showed up on the scoresheet. The Rangers, although they at least stretched Round 2 to five games, offered barely more pushback than the Penguins. They were a tired, almost despondent lot, a team that look tired of trying to shotblock its way to victory. Some 96 hours after losing Game 5, their coach, John Tortorella was fired. But the Blackhawks have speed, jam, scoring talent, and persistence. They showed it in the middle period when the turned the tables on the Bruins and began carrying the play in long stretches. Brandon Saad s goal cut the Boston lead to 2-1 at 3:08 of the second period, and the Hawks rolled up a 16-6 shot advantage for the period. In the third, it looked as if the Bruins put away their sixth consecutive postseason victory when Patrice Bergeron hammed in his power-play goal with 6:09 gone. Tyler Seguin set it up with a short shovel and Bergeron provided the jackhammer, a sizzling shot that beat goalie Corey Crawford high into the net. And here s where we found out about the Blackhawks no-fold resiliency. Less than two minutes after the Bergeron strike, Dave Bolland again cut Boston s lead to one goal, 3-2, compliments of a messy turnover by Torey Krug. The rookie blue liner, with plenty of time on his side, attempted to rush a pass up left wing from deep in his own end. The Blackhawks picked it off, transitioned the play in a flash, and Bolland had his first goal of the postseason. Next, with 7:46 to go, good fortune visited the Blackhawks in a way it never visited the Penguins. Rushing late into the zone, Johnny Oduya hammered a low slapper from just inside the blue line, a shot that was some 18 inches wide right of the net. But at that point, some 18 inches wide of the right post, the puck met Andrew Ference s left skate. The puck ricocheted sharply, at just the right angle, and into the net. Tie game. And the night was just getting started. A little luck can go a long way in the postseason. But that s not what revived the Blackhawks in Game 1, pulled them out of the abyss of a pair of twogoal deficits. They are strong, they are fast, and they have the ability to come back, to endure. They are in so many ways much like the Bruins. This is a far stronger, more resilient club than the Bruins faced in Vancouver in the 2011 Final. The winning goal, by Andrew Shaw, came with veteran defenseman Michal Rozsival unloading a high wrister from just inside the blue line. With Bolland providing a screen low in the crease, Shaw provided the winning tip with 7:52 left in the period. It was Chicago s 63d shot on net. On a night they easily could have quit, the Blackhawks kept coming, right to the last shot. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Bruins Kaspars Daugavins haunted by miss By Michael Vega Globe Staff June 13, 2013 CHICAGO He had, perhaps, the freshest legs of anyone in a Bruins sweater, but Kaspars Daugavins wore the longest expression of anyone in the somber visitors dressing room at the United Center following a gutwrenching 4-3 loss in triple overtime to the Blackhawks in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. Daugavins accepted full culpability for failing to pull the trigger on the Bruins best chance to pull out a win when he had a look at an open net, tried to drag the puck across the crease and wound up stumbling when Johnny Oduya came with a strong backcheck that disrupted Daugavins s goalmouth bid against Corey Crawford (51 saves). If we win the game, we get a 1-0 lead in the series, then 2-3 minutes later we go down, 1-0, Daugavins said, referring to Andrew Shaw s winning redirect at 12:08 of triple OT. I should take a little blame for it. I should ve put it in there, and given us the [series] lead. Daugavins, who played Game 1 vs. Toronto but was a healthy scratch the next 14 games, missing the remainder of the Toronto seven-game series and the entire five-game series vs. the Rangers. But he returned to the ice in time to log 6:46 of ice time in the clinching Game 4 victory over the Penguins. In all, he had attempted four shots, but none bigger than the point-blank chance he missed against the Blackhawks, which haunted Daugavins afterward. Asked if the puck was not settled, Daugavins said, It wasn t bouncing. I had everything like I wanted to do it. I shot it, but I got tripped, so I was falling when I was shooting it and I just missed the puck. It s a play where it goes back post and the goalie would most likely slide over trying to make a save with the full body, Daugavins said. I had time definitely to put it up there, but I just missed it. Asked if he saw the replay on the video screen above the United Center ice, Daugavins said, Yeah, I looked it up, and it was painful to watch. But it was even more painful to have lived. I got a great feed by [Tyler] Seguin backdoor, said Daugvins, who wound up with three shots, two hits, and one missed shot in 15:09 ice time. I thought the goalie was covering it. On the replay I saw I could ve put it straight in, but I still took it to my backhand and had wide open net pretty much. I should ve just went up and scored. I tripped, I was falling, and I just missed my shot. Boston Globe LOADED:
