2 About the League The Massachusetts Select Hockey League was founded with the intent to provide the development and promotion of talented student-athlete hockey players from across the nation. We pride ourselves on top-notch coaches who provide one-on-one instruction throughout the season. We foster an enriching environment that demands respect and sportsmanship on the ice and off. Being a part of the Mass Selects League provides a student-athlete the exposure for future playing opportunities at the college, professional, junior and Olympic levels. Players in the league compete in a season that spans from September to November, concluding with the state tournament. The state champion in each age group receives an automatic bid to the USA Hockey Tier I National Championships. After the conclusion of the season, the players join their high school teams for the scholastic season. Thirteen programs belong to the Massachusetts Hockey Selects League in the 18 & Under,16 & Under and Pure 15 classifications. Member organizations Cape Cod Whalers (Foxboro, MA) Islanders Hockey Club (Tyngsboro, MA) Boston Bandits (Bridgewater, MA) South Shore Kings (Foxboro, MA Boston Bulldogs (Formerly District 10 Bulldogs Quincy, MA) Eastern Mass Senators (Burlington, MA Greater Boston Junior Bruins (Dorchester, MA) North Suburban Wings (Essex, MA) Rhode Island Saints (West Warwick, RI) North Stars (Westborough, MA) Boston Little Bruins (Marlborough, MA)

3 Dear Friends, Welcome to the 2017 Massachusetts Select Hockey League Columbus Day Showcase and All Star Showcase. The Massachusetts Select League is a group of Tier I midget leagues featuring some of the best 18 and Under, 16 and Under and 15 and under hockey players currently enrolled in secondary schools in and around the state. The league and showcase events provide an opportunity for talented players to hone their skills showcase their talents in a highly-competitive environment. Moreover, the players are afforded the opportunity to compete for an appearance in the USA Hockey Tier I National Championships while still attending their high schools and representing their schools varsity teams. For the first time in the league s forty-year history, we are hosting both a Columbus Day Showcase event and a series of All-Star Games. The weekend s events are dedicated to the memory of founding father Don Parsons and philanthropist Corey Griffin, both of whom had ties to the league. The New England area has long been recognized as one of the premier hotbeds for the sport in all of North America. Additionally, it is the geographical home to multiple NCAA institutions from Division I through Division III. On the professional level, the area is well represented with franchises ranging from the ECHL to the pinnacle of the sport, the National Hockey League (NHL). It is here in the Northeast where so much hockey happens, and thus is fitting that a showcase of prospects to have the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities in an area where the recruiters and professional scouts never miss an opportunity to find great talent. Thank you for joining the Massachusetts Select League this holiday weekend. Yours in hockey, Pat Bohan Commissioner Massachusetts Select Hockey League

10 About Don Parsons Don Parsons loved the game of hockey and the difference the game could make in the lives of the young men who played for the Cape Cod Whalers over 25 years. Don and June, his wife of 47 years, were proud parents of their son Brad who went on to play at Princeton. Don was extremely interested in the Whaler players and wanted them whenever they could to use hockey to get into the best schools they could. For Don, hockey was the door opener to college and life and he was always asking the Whalers coaching staff about the team s grades and SAT scores. That said, Don loved to have great teams and the more high-character kids we took the better the Whalers performed. Don s vision for the Whalers was to build a program and a team of quality-character, high-achieving hockey players and to provide a platform for young adult players to become successful college student athletes. During Don s stewardship, the Whalers have sent over 200 student athletes onto play college hockey. Forty players have gone on to play in the Ivy League, 45 players to NESCAC schools, 18 to BC,14 to BU, and 14 to Northeastern. Several Whalers players have been selected in the NHL Entry Draft. Brooks Orpik, Brian Boyle, Jimmy Vesey, Jimmy and Kevin Hayes, Cory Schneider, Mark Fayne, Brian Gibbons, Paul Carey, Ryan Whitney, Michael Morris, and Mike Ryan are among the many success stories that have left their mark on the Whalers program. When the 18U team would have a big win, players would get in the car after the game to call Don with the news only to find that he had already either left them a message or sent a text congratulating the team. Don loved the Whalers and his passion was evident in everything he did concerning the team. He made it easy for the coaches to coach by taking care of the thousand details behind the scenes required to run a top notch program. His one mantra to the coaching staff: recruit solid character kids from solid families who value education. He also liked to recruit high school captains and it wasn t uncommon for recent U18 Whaler teams to have ten captains on the same team. Don was really proud that many fathers who accomplished the highest levels in hockey trusted the Whalers to coach their kids through the high school years. Kevin Stevens, Tommy O Regan, Marty McInnis, Teddy Donato, Scott Harlow, Steve Rooney, Randy Wood, George Hughes to name just a few greats who have had their children suit up for the Whalers. Players will wear a DP patch in honor of Cape Cod Whalers founder Don Parsons. Don s compassion, honesty, integrity, and strength of character earned him the respect of friends and the countless people whose lives he impacted along the way.

11 About Corey Griffin Corey Griffin embodied the spirit of hockey in his short life. The former Cape Cod Whaler played one season at Boston College and three at Babson College, earning his degree in However, his true impact was felt off the ice. After learning of his friend Pete Frates diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS,) Griffin helped raise $100,000 through the Ice Bucket Challenge fundraising campaign. For Griffin, philanthropy was part of business as usual. He was the founder of the NHL Alumni Pro-Am Tournament for Boston Children s Hospital s Pediatric Head Trauma Unit which works in conjunction with his father s charity Champions for Children. The tournament, which has been renamed to recognize its founder, has raised over $1.6 Million in the past two years alone. Thanks to the donations through the Corey Griffin NHL Alumni Pro-Am Tournament, researchers have developed antibodies that, in animal models, appear to prevent Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE,) generated preliminary data, which we used to raise an additional $2,650,000 in grant funding, completed and published 50 peer-reviewed studies regarding concussion assessment, recovery, treatment, and prevention of long term complications such as CTE, contributed to changes in the international recommendations for managing concussions that occur during sports, and enrolled 145 schools, obtained nearly 20,000 computerized neurocognitive baseline assessments, and more than 1,500 post injury assessments on athletes who previously did not have access to computerized neurocognitive assessments. Players will wear a CG patch in honor of Corey Griffin. Corey s compassion and generosity have impacted thousands of lives and serve as an inspiration for all.
