Tonight s Matchup: The San Jose Barracuda and San Antonio Rampage battle for the sixth and final time this season on Wednesday night. The Barracuda are against the Rampage this year and all-time. The last meeting between the two clubs came on Dec. 4 at AT&T Center, a 4-0 win for San Jose. Timo Meier scored twice, and Tim Heed and John McCarthy also tallied for San Jose while Mantas Armalis reeled in his first AHL shutout by making 29 saves. Spectacular Special Teams: The Barracuda were a perfect 14-for-14 in three games versus Bakersfield last week and have now killed off 19 straight on the PK and sit atop the AHL on the penalty kill (89.4%). The Barracuda are also ranked fifth in the AHL on the power play after going one-for-four on the man advantage last Saturday. Magic Carpet: Barracuda forward Ryan Carpenter scored his sixth goal of the year on Saturday and is now riding a five-game point streak (3+4=7) from Dec. 20 to now. Carpenter has points in six of his last seven games (3+4=7) and is now fourth on the Barracuda in points (5+10=15). Dazzling Danny: Barracuda forward Danny O Regan s 29 points on the season ranks second among AHL rookies and 14th in the AHL. O Regan is T-first on the Barracuda in assists (20), first in points and T-second in goals (9). Heed Check: Barracuda blueliner Tim Heed (7+20=27) ranks sixth in the AHL in points among d-men and T-third in assists. Heed is T-first on the Barracuda in points and assists and is fourth in goals. Marcus Soaring: After not registering a point in 10 games from Nov. 11 to Dec. 11, Marcus Sorensen has points in four straight games (2+2=4) and 6 of his last seven (3+3=6). Mueller Moves Up: Barracuda defenseman Mirco Mueller made his NHL season debut for the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night in their 2-1 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Kings. Mueller registered one shot and was a plus one in the loss. In 25 AHL games this season with San Jose, Mueller has eight points (0+8=8), eight penalty minutes and a minus-one rating. Mueller has appeared in 51 NHL games over his three-year professional career, totaling four points, 17 PIMs, and a minus-13 rating. Barracuda s Last Time Out: After suffering their worst loss of the season on Dec. 30, the Barracuda ended 2016 on a high note, overpowering the Condors at home, 4-1. The Barracuda used a pair of shorthanded goals by Joakim Ryan and Ryan Carpenter and a power play goal from Danny O Regan, plus a full strength goal from Marcus Sorensen to earn the win. Troy Grosenick collected his team-leading eighth win of the season by making 34 saves. Rampage s Last Time Out: The San Antonio Rampage made it three wins in a row and earned a sweep over the Tucson Roadrunners in Tucson on Dec. 31. Joe Whitney, A.J. Greer, Julien Nantel and Chris Bigras each scored in the 4-2 win, and Spencer Martin collected his third straight win by making 26 saves.

April 5, 1957 (59) The Oakland native finished enters his 19th season as the head coach of San Jose s top development affiliate and his 21th season overall with the Sharks organization. In his 19 seasons as head coach, Sommer has compiled a (W-L-T-OTL-SOL) record in the regular season and has reached the postseason nine times, including reaching the Calder Cup playoffs in each of the last two seasons. The San Jose Sharks dressed 20 players during the season that developed under Sommer s tutelage. In fact, 38 players have made their NHL debuts with the Sharks over the last ten seasons -- including Justin Braun, Matt Tennyson, Dylan DeMelo, Tommy Wingels, and Melker Karlsson. Roy Sommer surpassed Frank Mathers (1,256 games coached) for the most games coached in AHL history on March 26, 2014 in Worcester s 5-3 victory in Lewiston, ME over the Portland Pirates. Sommer has coached 1412 AHL games all with the SJ Sharks AHL affiliates. In total, he has been a head coach in 1,746 games in the AHL and ECHL. Last season, coach Sommer surpassed Hockey Hall of Famer Fred Bun Cook (636 wins) for the most wins in AHL history with his 637th win on February 10, 2016 in a 4-2 victory over the Ontario Reign at SAP Center. In , Sommer led the Worcester Sharks to a franchise record 49 wins and captured the regular season Atlantic Division title. After nine seasons in Worcester, MA ( ); Sommer moved with the franchise to San Jose, CA to coach the Barracuda during the season. As head coach for San Jose s top development team, Sommer has coached 95 players who ve spent time in the National Hockey League, including forward Logan Couture, who was named PlayStation Sharks Rookie of the Year. Sommer, 59, began coaching San Jose s top development affiliates in with the AHL s Kentucky Thoroughblades. He coached the T-Blades for three seasons before San Jose relocated their AHL team to Cleveland. In his first season with Kentucky, the Thoroughblades registered franchise records for most regular season wins (44), most road wins (21) and total points (98) in a season while posting the AHL s fifth-best record. This success came despite having 17 players promoted to the NHL during the season. From , Sommer s club went to capture two consecutive Mid-Atlantic Division titles and went to the Calder Cup Playoffs each season. Sommer s success was recognized during the season with his selection as the head coach for the Canadian All-Star Team, where his squad toppled PlanetUSA, 8-3. Before being named head coach of the Thoroughblades in 1998, Sommer spent two seasons ( ) as an assistant coach with the San Jose Sharks. With San Jose, Sommer was responsible for pre-scouting upcoming opponents for their offensive and defensive tendencies, line combinations and special teams tactics. In addition, he assisted in running practices and provided special on-ice extended workouts with scratched players and those rehabilitating injuries. Before Sommer joined San Jose, he was head coach of the ECHL s Richmond Renegades from and was named Coach of the Year after leading his team to a league best mark and a league record 105 points in capturing the Brabham Cup (best regular season record). Sommer led the Renegades to the Riley Cup (league championship) in after posting a regular season record. In addition, he served as head coach of the ECHL s East All-Star Team in and the North All-Star Team in Sommer s additional ice hockey coaching experience includes assistant coaching stints with the Albany Choppers and Muskegon Lumberjacks of the International Hockey League and working with USA Hockey as an assistant coach at several evaluation camps for 16- and 17-year-old players. In 1998, he served as head coach and general manager for the silver-medal winning Team USA (4-1-0 record) at the International Ice Hockey Federation In-Line Hockey World Championships in Anaheim. Sommer s squads won gold medals in each of the first two tournaments (1996 in St. Paul, Minn. and 1997 in Anaheim) and posted undefeated records each year. A sixth round selection by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1977, Sommer played in the Leafs system as well as those of the St. Louis Blues, Edmonton Oilers, New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins. The highlight of Sommer s NHL career came during the season when, as a teammate of Wayne Gretzky, Sommer scored a goal in his NHL debut with the Edmonton Oilers. Sommer was captain of the Wichita Wind from and again with Muskegon in Sommer, who played left wing and center, was a member of the AHL Calder Cup Champion Maine Mariners in and helped lead Muskegon to the IHL title (Turner Cup).
