Over 50 young hockey players from North and South Carolina showed up during the week end. Year after year, when comes the time to do the cut to select the Quebec Team, it is the most difficult task for the Coaching Staff. Five players from the 2010 Edition are back with a second participation at the event; Tanner Siemens, Mitchell Glabicki, Aidan Worrall, Kyle Moore and Bradley Ingersoll. Linda Essery moved to Connecticut and felt it better to give her spot to a local player for this season. 6 CYAH: Jr. Canes in Quebec Saturday, / 10:12 AM / Blog By Paul Strand Hello Quebec Junior Caniacs! Hopefully everyone has already been following us on Twitter. Coach Brian Mehm has been faithfully updating that as the events unfold. All the kids were just dropped off at Le Colisee and are sitting in their seats in section 17 watching their first Pee-wee Paul Strand tournament game in Le Colisee. Thetford is playing Campus DPR. They are both Quebec teams so there is a good crowd already at 9:00 a.m. The atmosphere is electric, the crowd is buzzing, it is 3-1 for Thetford with 6 minutes left, vuvuzelas can be heard in the distance, cow bells, and people screaming, in between each whistle the music is blaring, vive le pee-wee du carnival. So far the trip has been uneventful in terms of our travel up here. Flights went off without a hitch and all the luggage and hockey gear arrived with us in Quebec City. The game sticks arrived the next day, but we had sent some up early in the week so we had all we needed for the kids to get to their billet families and play our games the next day. Travel up here is always the biggest worry, so far so good. In the morning we headed to Val Belair for a practice and get the legs moving. At practice we announced our three Captains for the year. Riley Stillman will wear the C and second year Quebec Junior Hurricanes, Mitchell Glabicki and Bradley Ingersoll will wear the A. All three players will provide the team with some solid leadership on and off the ice. Glabicki will take the lead at the annual Team dinner at Mount Tourbillion and has been brushing up on his French to address the Billets in a thank you speech. After practice the kids headed back to the hotel with the coaches and to get something to eat prior to their game against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. We all went to eat at a local favorite in old Quebec, Mike s, and the coaching staff recorded a glimpse of some of the small things this tournament is about. At the restaurant it was just the coaching staff and the kids. Each player was responsible for ordering and paying their own bill. Some of these kids have never done this before on their own. When the bill came, Britt League and Brandon Osmundson, who were sitting together, got their checks. Two things happened then, first Ozzy did not have his money with him, so League learned how to pick up the check for Ozzy. Second, League was paying with a pre-paid credit card, so he learned how to add the percentage for a tip. Needless to say he was still not quite sure how the waitress was going to get their money and tip, but it was interesting to see him sign the receipt spelling out each letter in his signature like 11 year olds do. Later we headed to the Mall to play our first exhibition game against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The Tigers are sponsored by the New York Islanders and are in the C division. The intriguing part of this matchup is that Linda Essery, who played for the Junior Canes in 2010, moved to Connecticut over the summer and is now playing for the Sound Tigers in The Essery s have been the first family of the Quebec Junior Hurricanes as all three of the kids have come to Quebec as players. Mark, the oldest came once and Austin, the Goaltender, attended the tournament twice. The game started out rough as the team got to the mall a little late and was rushed onto the ice. The first period was very sloppy play. Eventually we managed to settle things down and play a solid game. The Carolina Jr Hurricanes won the first game of the 2011 Quebec Pee-wee trip 4-1. Scoring for the Hurricanes were Riley Stillman, Jordan Cooper, Bradley Ingersoll and Kyle Moore. Friday will be a big test playing against the San Jose Sharks a team from the AA Bracket. Until then, Vive Le Pee-wee Du Carnival. This is the game we have all been waiting for to get our 2011 Quebec pee-wee tournament up and running. We have been enjoying our time and getting ready to face this relatively unknown program out of the west. Their website calls them the best team in the state of Utah, but no one really knows what that means. We are preparing for a battle and the kids seem to be ready. On Friday we played our second exhibition game. The first one against the C bracket team was a 4-1 win, but no one was really happy with our performance. It was sloppy and some things made the coaching staff worry a little bit going into Sunday s tournament game. However the game vs. the San Jose Sharks was a different one altogether. The team came out firing. Riley Stillman and Tanner Siemens were moved up to forward for the first shift, playing alongside Jordan Cooper and the three monsters started the game off playing the whole shift in San Jose s zone. From there it seemed the puck never left the Sharks' defensive end. The entire team was into the game and other than not putting the puck in the net, the game showed what the team can do when it is focused. We buzzed around the Sharks goalie and peppered him as he stood on his head. The game ended with the Hurricanes winning 1-0. Tanner Siemens scored a nice goal and Josh Greune recorded the shutout for the Hurricanes. The coaching staff feels a little more confident about the team going into tonight s game. We had a record number of parents and family members at the dinner. As usual, the dinner was a complete success and everyone can mingle and get to know one another and the boys are all introduced and the billets can get to know them without their hockey gear on. Billet Captain Alain Desfosses, who made the trip to Raleigh to see the All-Star Game and Skills competition a few weeks back, runs the show for this dinner and he always puts on a great show. In another growing tradition, returning player and assistant captain Mitchell Glabicki gave a speech, showing off some French language skills, thanking the billets and coaching staff for this amazing experience. Well done Mitch! Saturday was another great day as well. Personally I started it off at Le Colisee at 8 a.m. as I was there to scout the Colorado Avalanche vs. the Boston Bruins because we could meet them later on down the road. However, it is always the best part of this tournament, just sitting and watching the kids play hockey. I have done it more and more over the years as you realize that each game has its moments of brilliance by these young hockey players. They could be AA bracket teams or CC bracket teams, but there always seems to be some 100
8 amazing plays, awesome saves and great finishes. Last night Val D or played a team from Winnipeg and Winnipeg was winning an uneventful game 3-1 in the third period. The game was not the best at that point with about 8 minutes left and did not seem too promising, but then Val D or scored one and then tied it up late and sent it into overtime with a flourish of skill and finesse. All of a sudden, Le Colisee was electric. It went into overtime and you could just feel the energy. Overtime ended tied and then the shootout came. The Winnipeg team changed its goalie for the shootout, which is always a tricky decision, but the goalie that finished the game was a little shaky from losing the lead. The shootout ended up being one of the best I have ever witnessed in Quebec. It went 10 rounds and each round was exciting. The goalies made some tremendous saves, but in the end Val D or, the local favorite in this game, won to a rousing cheer. No worries for Winnipeg though, they can come through the loser bracket and win it all in the end. This hockey is what it is all about here in Quebec. Later in the day all the boys got together at the local outdoor rink with the parents and billets for our annual Saturday outdoor rink game. It was snowing hard and it felt like the winter classic a couple years ago. We also had a record number of people out here for the game. Ten or so parents and billet dads donned the skates as the adults (along with a few local teenagers) took on the boys. Needless to say the adults schooled the youngsters in this game, but the boys showed some skill in shovelling the snow in between shifts. Carter Long, Colby Pederson, Riley Stillman and Nicholas Wildgoose acted like true Olympias out there and seemed to enjoy that just as much as the game. Most of the kids, billets and families came downtown for the Carnival parade or spent the nights at the billet house as the billets host the parents for a night of French cuisine and hospitality. The first Saturday each year is the last day of the carnival and the Hurricanes always seem to have this day off of playing games so it is a great day for the billets and families to spend some time together. One billet hosted a seven course meal and another billet family took their player and parents to the Ice Hotel which is a true work of art. The night ended with a trip to see the Trevor Walsh group down in Old Quebec. Trevor is a mainstay here during the Carnival and the Junior Hurricanes parents are his biggest fans and supporters. Last year he took a hiatus from the Pee-wee tournament, but every year prior to that Trevor and his group has entertained the Hurricane parents that first weekend. He is a wonderful entertainer and he is a big Hurricanes fan. All in all the preparation is complete for everyone involved in the pee-wee tournament. Everyone is settling in and gearing up for tonight. The boys will meet shortly at the hockey warehouse to get some last minute hockey gear, tape, etc and then head back to the hotel for a chalk talk, a walk, lunch, some more game preparation from the coaching staff and then head over to Le Colisee around 5 p.m. for our game. Bon Chance for the boys and Vive le Pee-wee Du Carnival! Happy Valentine's Day everyone! CYAH: Jr. Canes Win Big in Opener Tuesday, / 10:18 AM / Blog By Paul Strand Last night was some uncharted territory for the Junior Hurricanes in tournament play. It was 8:30 before the team took the ice for their game against the Team Northwest Regulators out of the Salt Lake City area. We had spent all day preparing for the game as best we could. Each year we feel that our preparation needs to be a little better going into the tournament games. Le Colisee and the magnitude of the tournament seem to make a lot of these young men and women nervous as they get ready to partake in the historic event. So we have spent many days leading up to this game just trying to get the boys to remember that they are very good hockey players in order to have them play with complete confidence. So yesterday the kids went to the hockey warehouse to get in that hockey frame of mind. This is a tradition since day one of the tournament. The warehouse is huge and has a tremendous selection. Since the growth of Five Hole Sports back in Cary the allure has worn off a bit, but it is still something for these boys to see the immensity of the place. Then it was back to the hotel and off for a team meal in the old city. We went to Mike s just inside the Saint John Gates; it worked last game so we might as well do it again. Hockey players are nothing if not superstitious. Then we took the kids to the Montmorency Falls. This has also become a staple over the past couple seasons. The falls are a breathtaking sight in both the summer and winter. It is a good sightseeing experience, but mostly we just wanted to walk off the lunch. Then back to the hotel for a little shut 'er down time. The kids went to the parents' rooms and slept and relaxed for an hour. They would depart for Le Colisee at 6:30. Once in the dressing room it was all business. Right into shorts and t-shirt; prepare the sticks; drink lots of water; stretch; warm-up; think hockey; get ready for the game. The team was focused. 101
9 Team Northwest was a relatively unknown team. They are an all-star team from New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado. Some of the boys were huge and we did not know what kind of team they had. In the end it did not matter. We started off flying. A minute or so into the game, Riley Stillman scored one of the nicest goals I have even seen in the tournament, dangling around three or four boys and doing the same to the Utah goalie. Nick Hale buried one not long after that on assists from Colby Pederson and Aiden Worrall. Shortly afterwards Brandon Osmundson took a nice feed from Jamison Berry and Nicholas Wildgoose and put our second goal past the Utah 'tender. Then just less then six minutes into the game John Moncovich hammered one home. Jr. Canes 4, Team Northwest 0. The team kept plugging along, trying to decide if we should slow it down or keep the gas on full throttle. This was uncharted territory for the Jr. Canes and we did not want to get too confident. There was only one goal in the second period as Riley Stillman took an incredible feed from Tanner Siemens right up the middle and Stillman decided to score on of the nicest goals I have ever seen on a breakaway, Backhand shelf. Jr. Canes 5, Team Northwest 0. The third period it was more of the same. The kids were rolling and we were trying to hold them back a bit. Colby Pederson scored two in this frame, Osmundson added his second of the game and Tanner Siemens put one past the Utah goalie on a nice pass from Wildgoose. The game ended with the most lopsided victory of our 10 year career. Jr. Canes 9, Team Northwest 1. We needed a tough game for the team to get us back on track and making sure our heads were in the right place for our round two game versus England. We had scouted the England team during their first game of the tournament and they have a solid team with a very good player on their first line so we wanted to make sure our team does not take them lightly. Vive Le Pee-wee Du Carnival! 102
10 CYAH: Jr. Canes Get a Final Tune-up Tuesday, / 2:47 PM / Blog By Paul Strand After the second period of the first tournament game the score was 5-0. It was a great way to start off, but we were beginning to worry that the boys would start thinking this tournament was easy. Brian Mehm mentioned that maybe we should get an exhibition game for the next day against a tough opponent to keep our heads in check. It was something we had discussed earlier, but our schedule was if we won the first game the team would go to the snow park on Monday and the snow park is a staple of the trip. During the intermission, Alain Desfosses ran to the exhibition office and called back with a possible game the next day against the Barrie Colts at 2:50. This would mean the snow park would get moved to Wednesday and a decision had to be made. So before the third period started, we took the game against Barrie and changed the schedule on the fly. Barrie was a good AA bracket team. They had beaten the Montreal Canadians the night before during their first tournament game, 2-1, and were solid top to bottom. They had only one loss so far this season and would be a good test. We were either going to be beaten badly or we were going to see if we were a solid team. So far, we were 3-0, but none of our games were particularly tough so we wanted to find out. The game was close right from the start. Barrie started off slowly. I think they did not totally expect us to be as strong as we were. Carolina still has a ways to go in bringing fear to other programs. We were playing a solid game as well and Colby Pederson started us off right by hammering a goal into a wide open net as Aiden Worrall and Nick Hale did the dirty work in the corner and passed it over to a waiting Pederson to star the second period. Barrie had been tentative until this point, but seemed to turn it on as the game progressed. I think they realized they were in a game and brought their tempo up to the level of a team that has lost only one game all season for a reason. They came harder and harder and in the early third they finally beat our tender to even the score at 1-1. However, our boys reacted well and came back at them right away. The tie game did not make them nervous and Kyle Moore took a nice pass from Jordan Cooper and scored a beautiful goal to the top left hand corner to put us back up 2-1. After that, we clamped down hard and kept going at them. We made some great defensive plays as well. Nick Hale chased down a man just inside our blue line and fired the puck out to save a near breakaway. Jr. Canes 2, Barrie Colts 1. 11 So far, we are 4-0 with a tough game against England to come today. Vive Le Pee-wee Du Carnival! CYAH: Jr. Canes top England Thursday, / 10:34 AM / Blog By Paul Strand The past couple days have been eventful hockey wise. On Tuesday we got ready for our second tournament game against England. The second tournament game is always a tough one because you know that you could now possibly be out of the tournament and the nerves start to get to the kids, not to mention the coaching staff. The England team has a trio of kids up front that dominated their first game. Their No. 17, Bradshaw, is huge, can skate and was responsible for three goals in their first-round game. The coaches worked up a game plan, but hoped we could stick to the one we used for our first game. We felt England was strong, but we were still the team to beat. We did not want to take anything for granted. For the second straight game we won the puck toss so we got the home bench and our Black Jerseys. We started the game like we started our first game, with Stillman, Tanner Siemens and Jordan Cooper up front along with Mitch Glabicki and Sklyer Hendricks on the point. The scoring did not take long. After a whistle in the offensive zone, Stillman lined up for the face off and put the puck through the England forwards feet off the draw, took two steps and lifted the puck backhand shelf on the England goalies right side. Next up, the puck got to the point and on the stick of Carter Long. Carter is from Hampton Roads and has been nothing short of steady and spectacular. Carter is a huge and quiet defenseman who plays almost perfect defensive hockey for the Jr. Canes. He has the wing span of an Albatross and is always in position. His hard slap shot from the point beat the English goalie to make it 2-0. The second period brought more of the same from the Junior Canes. The Hurricanes dominated the England defensive zone and the chances were many. Nicholas Wildgoose had chance after chance and when the floodgates open he will pot some big goals for the Canes. Wilmington forward John Moncovich has been a good offensive pick-up for the Jr. Canes and had goals in the previous two games, including one in the first game against team Northwest. Moncovich picked the puck up behind the net, dangled up to the top of the circle and into the slot and fired a nice goal top shelf to the left of the goalie for his second of the tournament to make it 3-0. As the period came to a close, the Jr Canes were still firing. Assistant Captain Bradley Ingersoll, one of the hardest-working players on the team, finally found the back of the net. Taking a nice pas up the left wing, Ingersoll fired a hard slapshot to the far right post and clanged it off the metal and into the back of the net for his first goal of the 2011 Tournament. Going into the third period, the team started to get a little loose and began doing what a lot of pee-wee teams can do, namely lose focus. Sure enough, the tough England line-up took advantage and scored their first goal of the game off a defensive give away and rebound to make it 4-1. After a couple more minutes of sloppy play, the coaching staff called a timeout to get the kids back on track. In this tournament, another goal by England would have brought a lot of nerves to the young kids' stomachs and you could even feel the tension now. After the timeout, the kids came back hard. The line of Pederson, Worrall and Hale are a steady bunch, and with their shift we got under control and the kids started playing better hockey again. The final buzzer came and the Hurricanes advanced to the second round where they will face Moncton on Thursday night at le Colisee. Vive Le Pee-wee Du Carnival! 104

Our opponent was the Moncton Wildcats. The Wildcats had beaten the Atlanta Fire to advance to the third round. Atlanta has always been a tough opponent for the Junior Hurricanes, so we expected a tough game. Our preparation for the games has been very good for this tournament. Le Colisee is an intimidating place, so we put some structure into our pre-game once we get into the dressing room this year in order to get the team focused. They get the heavy jackets and boots off and into their warm up clothes and shoes. Coach Mehm gives them 15 minutes to get their sticks worked on and then does a warm up with them under Le Colisee. Yesterday we added some music. Some fans of the Hurricanes might remember some of the choices - "The Rising" by Bruce Springsteen, "It s a Long Way to the Top" by AC/DC and "All These Things That I've Done" by the Killers heard prior to the Hurricanes games. The CanesVision crew has some great sense of musical taste to get hockey players and fans going. You could feel the tension as the team started playing. The games always get tougher and the nerves get to players the further a team goes into the tournament. It is tough on adults let alone the 11 and 12 year old players. The game started that way. This year s teams have been dominating from the start, but tonight we got off to a slow start on the scoreboard. This was something the kids were not used to. So the tension started to build. The chances were coming, but no goals. You could just feel it on the bench as we approached the six minute mark. It may sound strange, but in this tournament good teams have lost because of a very good goalie and letting teams hang around too long. The tension starts to build and 11 and 12 year old kids begin to get really frustrated and next thing you know you are out of the tournament. 106
14 For us, we did not know how we would react. Then, Tanner Siemens let a puck fly from the point - a beautiful slap shot that sailed hard to the back of the net. Tanner is a huge kid with an NHL shot, and this shot shook the twine behind the goalie. The piano was off the back and the doors opened. The Junior Canes followed with two more goals in the first period. Nicholas Hale took a nice pass from Riley Stillman and Mitchell Glabicki fired another one from the point for his first of the tournament. End of the first period: Jr. Canes 3, Moncton 0 In the second period we just kept coming. Kyle Moore took a beautiful pass from Hale who was behind the net and rimmed it off the post. Then Nicholas Wildgoose finally put one in. Goose has led the tournament in chances and this time he stuffed in a rebound from Brandon Osmundson for his first. Goose leads the B division in points right now with 6 in three games. End of the second period: Jr. Canes 5, Moncton 0 In the third we kept up the pressure, but now we also worried the kids would start to feel this would happen all the time. The teams remaining will be tough and we still do not want our kids to get too confident. We tried pulling the reigns in a bit, but our kids are scoring at will right now, which is also a good thing. Kyle Moore added his second of the night on a power play. Colby Pederson beat the tender on a nice shot low to the far corner on a two-on-one with Hale, and Brandon Osmundson tapped one in to finish out the scoring. 15 CYAH: Jr. Canes Rally for Win over Colorado Saturday, / 11:17 AM / Blog By Paul Strand We had seen this situation so many times before at the Quebec Pee-wee tournament and we are positive that we will see it again. Each year there are 109 teams that for the most part experience the Quebec Pee-wee tournament and most of them will witness the awesome power of Le Colisee and what it does to the nerves of parents, coaches and players alike. For a week now, the Junior Hurricanes team has been rolling over its opponents. This was something new to the kids from down south. The Carolina kids have had good teams but rarely have they rolled over the other teams. Now this may have been new to our team, what we knew was coming was at least one game like last night and more than likely two or three of them. This was hard to convey to the kids and we were doing our best to prevent it or at least prepare them, but what we learned last night is that it is almost impossible to prepare them for shaking the nerves of this tournament. We did our normal routine, warm-up, relaxed, played music and emotional speeches, anything to get the team fired up. They were alright and pumped all the way until the first puck was dropped. Then the tension hit. The first couple shifts were even, but something was off. There were missed passes, panic shots and giveaway after giveaway. Then the unthinkable, for these boys anyways, Colorado scored first. Six minutes into the game a giveaway in our zone produced a wide open player in the slot and Britt League had no chance on the top shelf shot. Then the nerves got even worse. We have seen it every year. The short periods and the crowd start to overwhelm the kids. The period ended and the kids were called in. I have seen that look every year I have been in Quebec with the Jr Canes. It was a deer in the headlight look. Blank stares and silence. It is the hardest thing for most adults to take charge in the face of adversity, but when you are 11 and 12 it is overwhelming in that atmosphere. The second period was not much better. As a coaching staff we tried to rally the kids, but we have seen this too many times before and we were hoping to just get to the dressing room only down by one and hopes of changing the results from years past. The end of the period could not come fast enough. With a Colorado player in the box at the end of the period, the Hurricanes pressured and pushed for a tying goal. Coach Mehm was screaming for a defenseman to stay back as the Avalanche player's penalty was over with 17 seconds left. With both defence up on the blue line, the Colorado defender sent a nice pass up ice for a breakaway. I cannot tell if the breakaway was in slow motion or fast forward. It was the toughest five seconds I have coached. The Avalanche player streaked in with our tournament on the line. A two-goal lead going into the third is extremely tough in this tournament to overcome. The Avalanche player went right and came back left, Britt League stretched his legs as far wide as he could and made one of the most spectacular saves in Jr Hurricanes history. He quite possibly saved our tournament. In the dressing room it was silence. A team that had outscored the opposition 21-2 in the previous three games and was a buzz of noise in the previous three intermissions was completely silent. The coaches did our best to sort the situation out and give the kids some hope. We knew what type of team we were capable of being; we just needed to find a way to bring the confidence out. Time was short in the third period. Fifteen minutes go fast when you are down by one goal in le Colisee in the quarterfinals. The team started out the third with a little more jump, but they were still tentative with their tournament lives on the line. Slowly we started generating some chances, mixed with some nervous turnovers. The team was pressing though and then the other nerves started for Colorado. The nerves that come when you know you have played well, but maybe you did not do enough to get a bigger lead. It happened the day before with the Boston Jr. Eagles and the Philadelphia Flyers. They played the day before and the kids got to watch as the Boston team went into the third with a one goal lead only to see the Flyers keep the pressure on and come back to win 2-1. As time ticked down and we put the pressure on, someone on the bench reminded the kids of that game. All that is needed in a game like this is one spark of confidence, one person to just take charge, one shot, one rush and it all changes. For our game it changed with assistant captain and second year player Mitch Glabicki. Earlier in the game Glabicki was called out by the coaching staff. He was a leader, a veteran and he was supposed to be leading, but he was faltering. During the second period he was told to get it going. With less than 5 minutes left Glabicki picked the puck up in the neutral zone and came down the left side and forced his way past the Avalanche player and deep into the Colorado zone. Driving to the net, he fired a shot low from the corner and the puck took a strange bounce off the inside of the goalie's pads and into the back of the net. 108
16 The monkey was off. The relief was instant. The players screamed and yelled and the coaches stood in disbelief. Moments later the momentum continued. Captain Riley Stillman picked the puck up in the corner on the next shift and slid the puck on the same side of the net as Glabicki s. This time the puck went off the outside pad and slipped behind the goalie and the place erupted. The Hurricanes fans and le Colisee jumped and yelled. It was an amazing sound. Three minutes remained, but Colorado would not quit. They kept coming and it would take a great defensive effort to keep Avalanche at bay. With 35 seconds left, assistant captain Bradley Ingersoll stepped in front of an Avalanche point shot and blocked it off his knee. He took a few steps over the blue line and fired the puck into the empty net to make the score 3-1 Hurricanes. This one will go down as one of the best for our Junior Hurricanes teams regardless of the tournament outcome. This was one of the toughest victories these kids will ever experience. 19 Junior Hurricanes Win Quebec International Title Coach Paul Strand and members of the team available to media at 6 p.m. Tuesday Monday, / 3:38 PM / News By Chris Robinson RALEIGH, NC Paul Strand, Youth and Amateur Hockey Coordinator for the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the Carolina Junior Hurricanes finished first in the International-B bracket at the 2011 Quebec International Pee Wee Hockey Tournament. This marks the 10th consecutive year that the 11- and-12 year old Junior Hurricanes have participated in the 12-day tournament, and is the first time the Junior Canes have won their bracket. Strand, who served as the team s head coach for the sixth consecutive year, will be available to the media along with members of the team on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 6 p.m. in the RBC Center media room prior to Carolina s game against the New York Rangers. The Junior Canes posted a perfect 6-0 record through the International-B bracket, finishing with a 5-3 win against Suisse Romande Lynx from Switzerland. The team outscored its opponents 32-6 in its six games, and earned wins against Team Northwest Regulators from Salt Lake City (9-1), Team Angleterre from England (4-1), the Moncton Wildcats from New Brunswick (8-0), the Colorado Avalanche (3-1) and the Anaheim Junior Ducks (3-0). The Junior Canes also went 4-0 in exhibition games while in Quebec, including a 2-1 win against the Barrie Colts of the higher-rated AA bracket. The Junior Canes had eight of the top 10 scorers in the International-B division. John Moncovich led all International-B skaters with eight points (4g, 4a) in the team s six games. Captain Riley Stillman (4g, 3a), Colby Pederson (4g, 3a) and Nicholas Wildgoose (2g, 5a) finished tied for second among all International-B bracket skaters with seven points. Goaltender Britt League posted a 0.96 goals-against average and one shutout while earning wins in all six games. Since beginning in 1960, more than 600 National Hockey League players have participated in the tournament, including Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Guy Lafleur, Ron Francis and current Hurricanes Tim Gleason, Chad LaRose Sergei Samsonov, Jeff Skinner and Jiri Tlusty. The Junior Hurricanes first gained acceptance into the Quebec International Hockey Pee Wee Tournament in The team scored its first tournament game victory in 2004, and won four tournament games in 2005 en route to their bracket s semifinals, including a win over Littleton, CO, the team that went on to win the U.S. Ice Hockey National Championship later that year. Jr. Canes Take Big Step Wednesday, / 10:35 AM / Blog By Paul Branecky In a month that s brought plenty of good omens about the state of hockey in North Carolina, perhaps none is bigger than the recent championship in the International-B Bracket of the famous Quebec pee-wee tournament. It may not seem that way when compared to the success of All-Star Weekend in Raleigh, which served as an eye-opener for some in the hockey world, and the recent reflections of Rod Brind Amour, who experienced 11 years of growth firsthand. However, the Jr. Canes capture of the championship shows that, when it comes to hockey, North Carolinians have become more than just fans. The first year we went up (in 2001) we couldn t score a goal, and now 10 years later we re winning it, said Paul Strand, the Hurricanes youth and amateur hockey coordinator and head coach of the Quebec team. It shows that we can make great hockey players in North Carolina, said Mitchell Glabicki, a defenseman from Cary. 112
20 On their way to the title, the Jr. Hurricanes, a AAA team consisting of 11- and 12-year-olds mostly from the Triangle area but also from Charlotte, Wilmington and Hampton, Virginia, posted a 6-0 record in tournament play, outscoring the opposition They beat teams from Utah, England, Moncton, Colorado, Anaheim and Switzerland in front of crowds as big as 10,000 in Quebec City s Colisee Pepsi the former home of the NHL s Quebec Nordiques. The list of NHL alumni from the tournament is a who s who of current NHL stars. Many current members of the Hurricanes organization have played, ranging from Ron Francis ( 75, 76) to Jeff Skinner ( 05). Drayson Bowman, Tim Gleason, Chad LaRose and Sergei Samsonov are also among those who have competed in the past. It s probably the most difficult tournament these kids can be involved in, said Strand. The immensity of it and the fact that they re playing in the Colisee throws in a whole new dynamic for these kids. For years, the tournament has been as much about the experience as the competition. Players stay with local billet families and have the opportunity to learn a new culture surrounding the city s winter carnival. Staying with the billets, learning some French and having to be on your own without your parents there it s a lot of fun, said Nicholas Hale, a left wing from Cary. Having won the International-B bracket in convincing fashion this year a late, come-from-behind victory against Colorado marked the only time they trailed throughout the tournament - it seems likely that the Jr. Hurricanes will advance to the tougher AA division beginning next season. We always said, Let s stay in the B bracket until we win the thing, said Strand. That will present yet another challenge for the program, but at this rate, it s one they seem prepared for. You definitely see the growth, said Strand. It s been 12 years here in Raleigh, North Carolina, for the Hurricanes, and here we are winning the biggest tournament out there. The development of the players is coming on fast, and it s a big result of having the Carolina Hurricanes here. 113
