Candidate views on animal issues Please answer the following 30 questions covering ten separate animal and environmental concerns raised by Queensland voters. You also have the opportunity to comment further on each issue. The survey should not take any longer than 10 minutes. It is important to answer each question honestly. Inconsistent answers or non-answers will be published accordingly. If you neither agree nor disagree with the statement, select option 3 as the middle ground. If you are yet to form an opinion or are unsure, simply leave the question unanswered. address * convenor@qld.greens.org.au Candidate details Please provide your details so that we may link you to your answers. Full name * Andrew Bartlett, Convenor Party * Australian Labor Party The Greens Liberal National Party of Queensland Pauline Hanson's One Nation Katter's Australian Party Civil Liberties, Consumer Rights, No-Tolls Independent Other:
Electorate * ALL of them This response is for: * Myself The party 1. Animal Welfare The Animal Care and Protection Act 2001 and the Queensland Criminal Code are adequately enforced with su cient punishment for animal cruelty offenders. A new Independent O ce of Animal Welfare is a low priority. Industry exemptions should be removed from Queensland's animal welfare legislation.
Additional comments on animal welfare. Education of the community is important to foster and improve understanding of the needs, behaviours, capabilities and interests of all animals. The principles underlying the ve freedoms freedom from hunger and thirst; freedom from discomfort; freedom from pain, injury or disease; freedom from fear and distress; and freedom to express normal behaviour should be incorporated as much as practicable into legislation and the administration and enforcement of our laws. 2. Greyhound Racing It is important that the greyhound racing industry has new and improved facilities to carry out its activities. The greyhound racing industry should be banned immediately. The racing industry should receive government funding to support its activities. Additional comments on greyhound racing The greyhound racing industry in Queensland has involved systemic animal cruelty, mass killings and live baiting. Animal cruelty is inappropriate entertainment and should be phased out as soon as possible. As the State Government has allowed this industry to exist, the State Government should nancially assist the re-employment of workers involved in the industry.
3. Factory Farms I will oppose the development of new factory farms in Queensland. Existing factory farms should be closed as quickly as possible. I plan to retrain and up-skill workers in a transition away from factory farms and abattoirs. Additional comments on intensive animal agriculture. Enforce standards to protect the welfare of farmed animals from producer to consumer (including those used for personal or local use), including minimising transport distances to slaughter, training and inspection for positive animal handling to prevent stress and injury, and mandatory pre-stunning of all animals to be slaughtered. 4. Companion Breeding Dog breeding is now su ciently regulated since the passing of the Animal Management (Protecting Puppies) and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2016.
I will push for tougher restrictions on the breeding of other companion animals, e.g. cats. The commercial sale of companion animals should be halted until we have no animals left in shelters. Additional comments on breeding. Mandate the de-sexing of all kittens prior to sale or transfer unless being transferred to a permit holding breeder. 5. Animal Agriculture It is the role of our state government to subsidise animal agriculture. It is the role of our state government to subsidise the research and development for plant-based food products.
CCTV systems should be installed in all Queensland abattoirs and other institutions handling animals. Additional comments on animal agriculture. 6. Climate Change I will focus on animal agriculture as a leading cause of climate change. The Queensland Government is currently doing enough to tackle climate change. I will push for a rapid switch to renewable energy sources. Additional comments on climate change.
7. Adani Carmichael coal mine I support the construction of the Adani Carmichael coal mine. There are serious concerns surrounding the mine and the enforcement of environmental regulations. Tax breaks or public money should be used to help the project go ahead. Additional comments on the Adani Carmichael coal mine. The Adani Carmichael coal mine must be prevented from going ahead at all costs, and the Queensland government and Parliament should unequivocally state that no new thermal coal mines or deposits should be developed anywhere in the state. 8. Marine Protection The only chance of success for saving the Great Barrier Reef includes reducing animal agriculture in Queensland.
I will work to ban harmful and single-use plastics. I support the use of shark nets and drum lines along Queensland coasts. Additional comments on marine protection. 9. Land Clearing The Newman Government was correct to remove green tape by relaxing land clearing legislation. It is my policy to make animal welfare a key factor in planning decisions involving land clearing. Previously cleared grazing land must be reforested.
Additional comments on land clearing. We will provide payments and/or other incentives for farmers for their enforced retention of vegetation and to re-afforest degraded land as carbon sinks. Restoring strong land clearing protections in Queensland is an absolute imperative, and must be done as quickly as possible, for a multitude of environmental reasons as well as to prevent the death and suffering of millions of animals. 10. Rodeos It is more important to protect local culture than it is to worry about animals being harmed during rodeos. There are no serious animal welfare concerns with rodeos. Rodeos should be banned immediately. Additional comments on rodeos. We will ensure that enforceable welfare standards are applied for all animals used in entertainment including zoos, circuses, theme parks, racing and rodeos.
