INSTRUCTIONS: c Organize the cards in sequential order Create a timeline in your journal Title your timeline Write a short description for each event on the timeline Answer the following questions in complete sentences. 1. What cultures influenced the cattle industry? 2. How did the cattle industry lead to the expansion of the Texas frontier? 3. Has the cattle industry impacted your life in any way? Explain your answer.

Vaqueros on large ranches established the charro way of life. Vaquero- Mexican cowboy Land grants as large as 4500 acres were given to settlers in Texas by the MexicEm government if they ro9ised cattle. The cattle industry continues as Texas b(~come$ parl: of the United States. Ranchers be;gin taking the longhorn to market by way Of cattle dri\/es and the industry becomes quite profitable. Charro - Mexican cowhands who usee/ horses and ~- r--'u_p_e_~s--to--ro_~_~~-~d--up_-_h_e_~_d_s_o_f_c_a_tr_''e_... ~~ The Civil \N'arr The cattle industry is on decline because of the large number of men fighting the war. Many herds of cattle are left to roam the frontier and multiply. By the end of the war, there were 21 large number of cattle and a few T e>lish1s with money to buy them. Cattle were worth very little. Rec~:mstn.uction After the war there is a great demand for beef in the North. Texans figure if they can get their cattle to the railroads, they can sell them in northern markets and earn 10 times their value. The Chisholm Trail is the first of many ::'iattle trails that move the cattle to the nearest railroads in l<ansas. r ~ ~ The Cattle Er~ CDo$ing of the Open Range Cattle ranching becomes a "big businese:" in Texss. large ranches are established which still e}(ist today like the King Ranch,.JA Ranch, the Matador Ranch and the XIT Ranch. The land for the XIT Ranch wa$ provided by the T exss government to be sold to Chicago and British investors to use to pay for the construction of the capitol building we use ioday. Turn of the 20th Ccsntwy The supply and demand of ca,ttle s.hifted, the day to day operation of ranches changed and severe weather all resulted in smaller ranches and the end of the "cattle kingdom." The cattle industry began to be run more like a business depending on scientific techniques and management As more ranchers moved into Texas; there was a stwggle for grazing lend. With the in\/ention of barb wire and the windmill, ranchers could now fence off their land and water their cattle in a contained area.,~ This cb~used problems forcing 'il1e Texas legislature to pass law::; that outlawed fence cutting. By the "i 880s, the c~;ttle ranching suffered. 1 M~il'ving into t~,e 21 ~>t CentlBFY / Cattle ranching still remains a prosperous industry in Texas but on a sma!!er scale. It has become an agricultural business that does its buying and $elling on the cornputer constantly lool-\ing for e>!_port markets. It is no longer an industry that just raises cattle but exiends to comrnercial feedlots and the slaughter and meat-pad:;ing industries as well. I 2010, TESCCC 07/0i/
