1 Volume 12, No. 55 September 08, 2013 With Brussels The 13 DL Is In The Books by Jon Mulkeen Brussels, Belgium, September 6 Usain Bolt may have been the headline act at the Belgacom Van Damme Memorial, the final leg of the 2013 IAAF Diamond League, but teammate Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce stole the show. The world and Olympic champion set a meet record in the 100 to beat USA s Alex Anderson (10.97) by a big margin. Winner of the men s 100 here for the past two years, Bolt made it a third victory in a row, producing a Former US champion Michael Rodgers finished 2 nd in 9.90 with Jamaica s world bronze medalist Nesta Carter 3 rd with World 800 champ Mohamed Aman wanted a fast race and got exactly what he asked for. The Ethiopian teenager clocked 49.3 at halfway, tucked behind Djibouti s world bronze medalist Ayanleh Souleiman. Aman then kicked past a fading Souleiman to win in a world-leading 1:42.37, improving his own national record by 0.16 and moving to No. 2 on the all-time Junior list. World silver medalist Nick Symmonds replicated his finish from Moscow, clocking a U.S. leader of 1:43.03, for the No. 7 American performance ever. By winning the steeple, world champion Milcah Chemos became the first to win four overall Diamond Race titles in a row in the same event. Moments later, pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie matched that achievement. Chemos held off a strong challenge from GLADYS CHAI/ASVOM AGENCY world bronze medalist Sofia Assefa to set a meet record of 9: Lavillenie had first-time clearances at all heights from 18-½ (5.50) through to 19-2¾ (5.86), after which he was the only vaulter left in the competition and the Diamond Race winner. The French star then moved the bar straight up to 19-6½ (5.96) and got over it on his second attempt before ending his series with three unsuccessful attempts at a world-leading 19-9¾ (6.04). Moscow runner-up Warren Weir won the 200 in to succeed fellow Jamaican Nickel Ashmeade as the diamond winner. Ashmeade (19.93) and Walter Dix (20.12) ran season s bests to take the next two spots. For Ethiopian pair Hagos Gebrhiwet and Yenew Alamirew, the focus in the 5000 was on the overall diamond victory. The pace over the first few kilos was slower than planned, but began to pick up slightly towards the end. Alamirew proved to have the best kick and he forged ahead to take the win in 12:58.75 with former world champ Bernard Lagat coming through strongly on the last lap to Lavillenie has won all four editions of the Diamond League vault take a surprise 2 nd in a U.S.-leading 12: Gebrhiwet ran 12:59.33 as he surrendered the Diamond Race title to his teammate. The other Americans in the race acquitted themselves well. Galen Rupp (13:01.37) ran the second-fastest time of his life in 5 th, with PRs going to Evan Jager (13:02.40) and Chris Derrick (13:08.04) in 8 th and 11 th, moving, coincidentally, to Nos. 8 and 11 on the all-time U.S. list. World champ Svetlana Shkolina contin September 08, 2013

2 ued her yearly unbeaten streak to win the high jump at 6-6¾ (2.00), bagging a diamond in the process. Jehue Gordon came off the last barrier best to take the long-hurdle win, but 3 rd -place finisher Javier Culson picked up just enough points to clinch the overall. In the discus Sandra Perković avenged her recent defeat to Gia Lewis-Smallwood, throwing (67.04) to the US champion s (64.82). Perković was already a guaranteed winner of the Diamond Race before competing. So too were fellow Brussels winners Ryan Whiting in the shot, Dawn Harper-Nelson in the 100 hurdles, Abeba Aregawi in the 1500 and Caterine Ibargüen in the triple jump. Other DL leaders lost their events in this finale, but had still done enough to win the overall series. They included Amantle Montsho, who was beaten by Natasha Hastings in the 400, javelin thrower Vítězslav Veselý, who was beaten by Tero Pitkämäki, and triple jumper Christian Taylor, who finished 2 nd to Teddy Tamgho.
