1 Volume 11, No. 57 September 03, 2012 Zürich DL: 17 Diamonds Awarded by Roy Conrad Zürich, Switzerland, August 30 Part 1 of the Samsung Diamond League s third season ended, as in previous years, at the Weltklasse gathering. Titles were confirmed in 17 of the tour s 32 events. Winners, some of whom had already wrapped up titles earlier in the circuit but had to compete here to actually win, received a $40,000 award plus a special diamond-themed trophy. And in a new wrinkle introduced this year, each DL winner gets wild-card pass to next year s World Championships (but if a nation already has a wild card for a defending champion, it can use only one of them). The DL s second finale will come next Friday (September 7) in Brussels. Rain and chilly 57-degree temperatures didn t help the athletes this year. Neither did the long season and an expected post-olympic letdown. Still, several London champions added DL titles to their 12 CVs. drew even heading into the final stretch. The London 6 th -placer pulled ahead with 50 meters left to win in a PR 1:42.53 ahead of Rudisha s 1: Thus like last year in What will a surprise loss to Aman do to Rudisha s AOY chances? (12:59.24) and Bernard Lagat (12:59.92). Galen Rupp clocked 13:09.50 for 9 th. 400H: Angelo Taylor held on to a Men s Events 200: The King was the big draw and Usain Bolt didn t disappoint. He churned the turn but then had to hold off hard-charging young teammate Nickel Ashmeade, , who claimed the overall DL title. I m happy to run another sub-20, but I didn t want to push my body, said Bolt. 800: There was talk that David Rudisha might try to lower his 1:40.91 World Record set in London, but Mohamed Aman didn t get the memo. The 18-year-old Ethiopian shadowed Rudisha down the second backstraight and giancarlo colombo/photo RUN Milan, Aman handed the Kenyan his first loss this season. The pair were followed by another 18-year-old Kenyan, Leonard Kosencha (1:44.29) and American Duane Solomon (1:44.42) as Aman won the DL race as well. 5000: Isiah Koech used a last lap to win the race and the DL in 12:58.98 from Games bronze winner Thomas Langosiwa narrow lead off hurdle 10 to win in from Cuba s Omar Cisneros (48.34), who edged the rushing finishing trio of Jehue Gordon (48.40), Félix Sánchez (48.42) and Javier Culson (48.56). The latter still claimed the DL crown. High Jump: Olympic winner Ivan Ukhov was the only jumper to clear 7-7 (2.31), but 2 nd -placer Robbie Grabarz September 03, 2012
2 (7 5¾2.28) took the DL race. Pole Vault: Another London champion to take DL honors, France s Renaud Lavillenie was the lone vaulter to clear a modest 18-8¼ (5.70) as 7 of the 12 entrants no-heighted. Triple Jump: Christian Taylor said after winning in London that he was scared whenever Fabrizio Donato came up to jump. The Italian veteran narrowly prevailed here by an inch with 56-4¾ (17.39), but the young American won the DL battle. Shot: The day before the main meet in Letzigrund stadium, the putters battled at Zürich s main train station, Reese Hoffa taking the DL title with his 71-0 (21.64) win ahead of Ryan Whiting (70-6¼/21.49) and Games winner Tomasz Majewski (69-6/21.18). Javelin: Tero Pitkämäki s last throw (85.27) won the battle from Finnish teammate Antti Ruuskanen (273-6/83.36). Ukraine s Oleksandr Pyatnytsya needed to win to take the DL title, but placed 3 rd (272 1/82.95). So Czech Vitezslav Veselý, 4 th at (80.54), prevailed in the DL war. Women s Events 100: Double Olympic champ Shelly- Ann Fraser-Pryce didn t give Carmelita Jeter a chance to win either the race or the DL. SAFP s sharp start gave her an unbeatable lead, her all the more impressive as it came into a -0.4mps wind. Jeter (10.97) was a clear 2 nd ahead of Allyson Felix (11.02). 400: Jamaican Rosemarie Whyte led off the final turn and for much of the homestraight before first Amantle Montsho and then Sanya Richards-Ross surged past. SRR s took the race, but Montsho (50.33) won the DL as Whyte (50.41) finished 3 rd. 1500: A slow second lap didn t bother Abeba Aregawi and the Ethiopian won the race and the DL in 4:05.29 from Kenya s Mercy Cherono (4:06.42) and American Shannon Rowbury (4:07.14). London bronze winner Maryam Jamal (4:11.05) ran only 11 th. Steeple: Olympic bronze winner Sofia Assefa crossed the line first in 9:21.32 for tan apparent DL win, but was soon DQed. She had run on the infield approaching a water jump before cutting back into the approach lane. So Ethiopian teammate Etenesh Diro got the win at 9: Kenya s Milcah Chemos hit a barrier and fell hard just before the bell but struggled home 9 th (9:35.67) to win the DL. She is the only athlete to win all three editions of the DL. 100H: Kellie Wells got a fast start, but Dawn Harper caught her about halfway and won the race and DL in as Wells was edged by 0.01 by the fast-closing Queen Harrison (12.68). Long Jump: London winner Brittney Reese was diagnosed with a left ankle stress fracture, which held her to 9 th at 20-8½ (6.31) behind 8 th -place Janay DeLoach (21-2/6.45). Olympic silver winner Yelena Sokolova spanned 22-8½ (6.92) for both wins. Shot: Valerie Adams again prevailed at the hauptbahnhof as she put 68-3¼ (20.81) to easily best Michelle Carter (63-2/19.25) and retain the DL title. Discus: London winner Sandra Perkovic comfortably won at (63.97) to secure the DL by more than 2 meters. non-dl Events 100: This non-dl event provided a shock when Tyson Gay false-started and was DQed. He appeared to protest that he couldn t hear the starter. But even had the American run, it would have been tough beating Yohan Blake. The Jamaican burst off the line and never was challenged as he bulled to a 9.76 win (wind +1.4mps so worth an adjusted 9.84). I m not surprised that after the Olympics I m coming out so strong and so fast, said Blake, who easily handled countryman Nesta Carter (9.95) and American Ryan Bailey (9.97). 4 x 100: A U.S. foursome of Doc Patton, Wallace Spearmon, Gay and Bailey used safe passes to clock for an 0.17 margin ahead of Jamaica (Mario Forsythe, Jason Young, Warren Weir, Kemar Bailey Cole), with Britain (38.30) 3 rd. 200: The one non-dl women s race saw Lauryn Williams (22.96) edged another vet, Jamaican Aleen Bailey, by Zürich DL Zürich, Switzerland, August 30 (attendance 26,000 SRO; overall winners underlined) Non-DL 100: I(1.4) 1.
