In, the IAAF Council decided that starting from 7, the championships should revert to a single day of competition with no short course races. It was felt that these had generally failed to attract middle distance runners. At the 9 IAAF Congress, it was proposed that the championships should be held every two years, alternating with area championships. This was approved by votes to. In it was announced that the senior race distances were to be standardised at approximately Km for both men and women, while in August 6, the IAAF Council decided on the introduction of a mixed relay race composed of two men and two women per team, running one loop of the course in any order. Participation These have been revised to include a number of previously unreported non-finishers. Similarly, non-starting athletes who may have appeared on results have now been excluded from totals. Only those who actually competed are counted, though work still goes on to identify such athletes in certain years. Doubling Up In 998-6, athletes could compete in more than one race, with several contesting the long and short distances. Some under-s started both the short and under- races, which were always staged on different days. In -6, under-s were permitted to compete in one race only. With the addition of the relay in 7, it is again possible for any athlete to participate in more than one race, the relay and an individual, though none did so in 7. The numbers of those athletes doubling up is shown in italics for the relevant years.
