1 Faces at the Finish Line: Tom Faulkner Name: Tom Faulkner Age: 46 Occupation: Computer Programmer Pacer member since: 1997 I was a member before that but we moved to Denver for 3 years and returned in I reside in: Plano, TX By Don Wallace Family: Married to Jody. We have two Australian Shepherds (Gracie & Twister). Background: I played Ice Hockey as a kid (and yes, I still have all my teeth). In This Issue Faces at the Finish Line Pacers Behind the Pacers The Starting Line June Race Results Know Your Presidents Running since: My junior year in high Prediction Run Results school. I did not run at all in college, but started running again after college when I Upcoming Races started gaining weight from sitting all day Group Runs writing computer programs. Vendor/Sponsor Corner Why did you start running: I started running to get in shape to play hockey. Why do you keep running: I m always looking for the feeling of a great run the effortless stride, breathing easy and moving fast. I rarely get that feeling, even for short stretches. The side benefit of running is eating anything I want. What is your favorite running route and time of day: Lately, I like my Thursday evening run with the dogs or the weekend long runs (hopefully with the dogs, but lately it seems as if their schedule is too busy for me!). What is your normal training routine/mileage: Since I also compete in triathlons and duathlons, I incorporate that training into my routine. I run 30 to 40 miles per week; usually Tuesday at the track (or at the prediction run), and then on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. I swim on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, and I bike on Saturday, Sunday and try to get another ride in during the week. What was your most memorable race and why: Finishing the Hawaii Ironman in 2000 was my most memorable race. It is just a brutal event but the atmosphere is incredible. The support from the volunteers, spectators and the other athletes was just amazing! My most memorable running race was the Pikes Peak ascent. Nothing like running over 13 miles uphill starting at 6800ft and ending at 14,100ft to get your morning started! The view Tom Faulkner at the top is nice. Another run I remember was the first time I qualified for Boston at the White Rock Marathon, that was one of those special runs it exceeded all of my expectations. Other sports and interests you enjoy: I started playing hockey again this year after taking a few years off. Any advice for younger Pacers: Consistency in your workouts will help you improve. Hard work beats talent if talent doesn t work hard. Also, always remember to do what you enjoy! Page 1

2 Pacers Behind the Pacers By Jerry Powell JUNE RACE RECAP Dan Millet established the Millet Mile with the first race being held on July 29, Dan was unable to attend the race this month but we know he would have enjoyed the high caliber of competition. We hope to see him at a race soon. No rain again! Just how many more races will we be able to dodge the storms? We didn t need any excitement from Mother Nature it was provided by our members, guests and team of volunteers. As a club we try to accommodate runners of all ages. Today we managed to cover the group from age 2 to 80. Where are all those other senior citizens hiding? A new course record for the Millet Mile was established by Clint Bell with a time of 4:23. Leading off the Millet Mile on his bike was member volunteer, Tom Faulkner. His role was part safety and part show. I wonder if there was any drafting going on between Clint and Tom? No, I don t think so. Tom, on his bike, wasn t able to keep up with Clint after the half mile. Congratulations to Clint and to all the runners who ran with him on this record setting day. Clint s record setting time wasn t the only excitement during the Millet mile. Tyler Johnson was second with a time of 4:40:9 followed by Alex Wallace and Joe Miller both recorded at 4:41:9. Now that is a close local race finish. Clint Bell Scott Steffen, the previous Millet mile record holder, won the Becky Angeles Masters division with a 5:03, followed by Bob Abbott winning the Senior title with an impressive 6:00. The male category proved to be very competitive with the top three separated by only 5 seconds. Becky Angeles continues to be an impressive runner as she won the women s overall Millet Mile and 5K. The mile was completed in 5:29 (a new age group record) and just a few minutes later, she completed and won the 5K with a very fast 19:06. Dawn Burke was the first female master to cross the mile finish line with a time of 6:57. Jeanne Pitz won the senior title finishing in 8:36. The 5K started about 34 minutes after the Millet Mile. With over 200 runners, the mile obviously didn t completely exhaust everyone. Our members are in great shape. The overall winner was Connor Doyle in 17:23. The first place female was Becky Angeles in 19:06. On the women s side of the race, Leslie Smith was the Masters winner in 23:36 followed by Cynthia Thomas winning the Senior trophy in 26:19. Tommy Smith took home the Master male award with a time of 18:28. Be- Tommy & Leslie Smith Thomas Beitinger & Cynthia Thomas tween Tommy and Leslie, do you think they have a few awards at their home? The Senior title for the men went to Robert Benson (21:55). Did you notice we had race video playing under the gazebo? ESPN eat your heart out! Did you notice the course was virtually mud and water free? We all owe a big thank you to Vernon Hodges. Notice that you could actually read the finish line clock? Did you also notice that three high school teams participated in the 5K? Sarah Heady The June race is always the most difficult race to conduct. With the help of many volunteers and with the cooperation and patience of our members and guests, it was a truly excellent event. Jenny Orth, Samantha Gant, and Kirsten Montgomery Page 2

3 The Starting Line Club Notes By Jerry Powell Thank You Volunteers! Were you aware that July is Volunteer Appreciation month? Aren t you glad you read this newsletter? Fifty eight volunteers have made sure that 1480 runners competed in a safe, and (hopefully!) fun running environment in distances ranging from 1K to 15K. Most end of the month races require about 25 volunteers. Unfortunately, we are seeing too many of the same faces doing most of the volunteer work this year: Times Volunteered: Individuals: Many of the race functions allow you to volunteer and still participate in the run. Things such as: registration (member and guest), bib distribution, new membership, course set up, food and beverages, pictures, gazebo set up, awards, Kids 1K, race report writing, etc. Other things require your full attention and race participation on that day is not possible. This includes functions such as: finish line timers, bib recorders, finish line captain, clock starter, race starter, photographer, water tables. When you volunteer, you will never be given an assignment you don t feel comfortable performing. Usually you will be placed with an experienced volunteer. If something goes wrong, blame the president. Next race, be sure to thank the many volunteers you see performing the functions required to execute an event. Then, volunteer to help with an upcoming race. You can volunteer online by sending an to: volunteer@planopacers.org or by contacting me directly at jpowell34@msn.com. On race day, tell the person at the registration table that you would like to help with that race or a future one. You ll be glad you did!. Decision Time Volunteering is Fun and Rewarding...Why Not Get Involved! I would like to hear from you regarding some potential club activities listed below: Club Picnic Would you like to have a club picnic this year? If so, when, where, with or without a theme. What type of food and beverages would you like? Should it be catered or food provided by the members? Should it be free? Charity Run Should we have one this year? Should it be an existing race or a new race event? What type of run should it be? It wouldn t have to be your ordinary 5K or 10K. I recommend that the money from such an event be split 50/50. The club retains half with the balance being donated to a local charity. Would you be willing to help pull off such an endeavor? Shirts, Shorts, Hats, Running Gear - Are you interested in Plano Pacer running apparel? If so, what kind? What would be a maximum you would pay for a quality product with a Plano Pacer logo? Would you be willing to help with this project? Better club decisions get made with the valuable input from our members, so let us know what you think. You can talk to me at the race, me at jpowell34@msn.com or call me at Thanks for your help! Page 3
