1 Pacer Student Athlete 2007 Year-in-Review By Don Wallace Many of our young men and women members, including some of those listed below, participate in a variety of sports and we salute the accomplishments of all of our student athletes. During the year in addition to participation in Pacer events many of our younger athletes also compete in UIL, USATF and other sanctioned running competitions. Though you are probably familiar with their achievements at our races we knew you would be interested in hearing about some of their successes elsewhere during the past year. UIL Spring Track Season In 2007 many of our Pacer student athletes enjoyed tremendous success on the track. Plano SHS boys finished 3rd at the District 9 5A meet, while the Plano West girls finished 4th. The distance events for both boys and girls were dominated by Plano s athletes. PSHS junior Alex Wallace was the District 9-5A champion at 3200 meters (9:50:19). On the girls side Plano West junior, Jenny Swan took second place in both 1600 meters (5:12:70) and 3200 meters (11:40:79). Other outstanding performances at the District 9-5A Championships were: BOYS 800m 2nd place Kevin Ippen, Sr. - PWSHS (2:03:31) 3rd place Juan Sanchez, Fr. - PSHS (2:04:14) 1600m 3rd place Reuben Hurst, Jr. PWSHS (4:30:7) 3200m 2nd place Michael Richards, Sr. PWSHS (9:51:39) GIRLS 3200m 3rd place Megan Rozman, Fr. PESH (11:44:15) Region II Championships were held at Baylor University in Waco, on April 27th & 28th. Competition was stiff, but Jenny Swan finished 4th in the 1600 meters, in 5:12, nearly identical to the time she posted at the district meet. At 3200 meters, Megan Rozman knocked nearly 30 seconds off her district time to take 6th place (11:17:28). Throughout the season West s Connor Doyle and Reuben Hurst consistently finished in the top of the pack, as did Alex Wallace and Juan Sanchez for Plano. Likewise, Jenny Swan and Katie Bassett from Plano West finished at or near the top of the pack in the girls races. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE Page 1

West senior Jenny Swan was the district champion (11:28) on the 2-mile course. Junior Katie Bassett from West finished 3rd in 12:21. The Plano West girls took 4th place at the Regional meet in Arlington, and Jenny Swan capped-off a spectacular season by winning the Region II championship with a time of 11:08:85. Not surprisingly, District 9 coaches selected Jenny for Girl s Runner of The Year honors. 3 December Race Report - Holiday Hustle 3K, 8K and Jr. Sprint By Jerry Powell December 29th, 2007 marked the last race of the year, where we were met with near freezing temperatures. The online race pictures show that the runners had dressed appropriately for the competition.167 runners braved the cold to participate in the 3K, 8K and Kids K. The race featured many individual accomplishments. Joe Liechty (M 70-74) ran the 8K in 35:48 surpassing the record established in April 2003 by 3:35. You might need a little time to process that achievement. Joe s 7:12 pace would be competitive in any age group. Alex Wallace (M 16-19) ran the 3K and came in second behind the overall winner Clint Bell. Alex set a new age group record of 9:33 surpassing the Dec record by 22 seconds. His determination to give 100% was evident as he appeared to sprint all the way from the bridge to the finish line a remarkable race by one of our high school seniors. Dewey Fambry (M 75-79) ran the 3K course in 16:15 in route to setting a new age group record by 58 seconds. The plaque awarded to Dewey last month will have to be recalled and updated with his latest record. Wendy Teutsch (F 30-34) must save her best runs for the month of December. Last year at the December race she established an Athena record in the 3K of 17:57. This year she gave herself a late Christmas present and ran the course in 17:55. Congratulations on improving on your record. Harold Recinos (M 50-54) placed 3rd in his age group in the 8K with a time of 34:45. His 8 year old son, Elijah, told his father he would like to run. Harold changed his membership from an individual to a family and immediately Elijah was a bib carrying Plano Pacer member. In his first race, he ran the Kids 1K and came in first in his age group with a time of 6:00. Congratulations to both on becoming a winning running family. 4 The Starting Line Club Notes By Jerry Powell ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO HELP: Take the challenge and change a life. The challenge in this case is Team Challenge -Crohn's and Colitis! This March, the North Texas Chapter of the Crohn s and Colitis Foundation will inaugurate a new endurance program: Team Challenge Crohn s and Colitis, as part of the Napa to Sonoma Half-Marathon, July 21, This unique program allows team members to train to run or walk a halfmarathon, and to receive an all-expenses paid trip to Napa, California, all while helping the Foundation raise critical funds to find a cure for ulcerative colitis and Crohn s disease. To find out more about being a part of Team Challenge, please emai Pete Walton at pwalton@ccfa.org, call him at , or check out their website at Plano Pacer Officers/Directors By Jerry Powell Congratulations and thank you to those members who stepped up and assumed a leadership role in the club. I would also like to extend a very special thanks to those who accepted a second term. The club is still looking for a President to lead us through The position of Prediction Run Director is also open. Volunteers are always needed to help at races. We need four to five volunteers in the registration area (registration volunteers will be able to participate in races because the work is done prior to the start of the race). 11 Pacer Award Winners for 2007 By Jerry Powell Our December event ended the year in a fitting manner with members racing in pursuit of year end awards. All points for the various award categories have been tabulated and the winners for the 2007 Annual Participation Awards and Most Improved Pacers are now known. This was the first year for the new awards categories and it was a great success. Some minor changes for 08 should make them even more appealing. Congratulations to all who qualified to participate in the Annual Participation Awards or met all the requirements and showed enough improvement to make it to the Most Improved Pacers list! The Annual Participation Award is based on earning points for running races and volunteering during the year. A perfect score of 360 could be achieved by a member placing first in 12 monthly races and volunteering at one of the events. These requirements represented a significant challenge. An overall (Open, Master, or Seniors) win was worth 30 points. An age group first place finish was worth 29 points, second place was worth 28, and third was worth 27. Volunteering or running without placing earned 25 points. If you volunteered and ran on the same day, you were awarded the highest points for one event only. The top ten finishers earned at least 300 points. The winner, John Nance, earned 351 out of a possible 360 points. Congratulations to John on having a near perfect year. Awards to the top 5 winners will be presented at the January race. Nance 1st John Nance 351 points 2nd Ruth Olinger 334 points 3rd Bob Smeby 322 points 4th James Gabhart 315 points 5th Freddie Smith 311 points The Most Improved Pacer award is based on a mathematically-derived improvement comparing the current year s races to one s past Pacers races. It is impossible to capture everyone, but many members showed measurable improvements. We should all recognize that improvement becomes more difficult as we age. However, that did not stop 30 adult members from showing an average improvement of almost 2.71 points. Having measurable goals helped. Our teenage qualifiers (13-18) also showed strong improvement with an average gain of 5.72 points. Our children (12 and younger) demonstrated that they were very competitive and improved by an average of 4.51 points. The award categories for 2007 were Children (12 and under), Teenager (13-18), and Adult (19+). The winner of the children's category, with an improvement of points, was 8 year old Samantha Gant. Children obviously do have an unlimited amount of energy. Congratulations Samantha and to all the children for showing us what you can achieve! The teenage participants were fun to watch this year. They seemed to get faster with each race. Alex Wallace won the category with an improvement of 8.06 points. I think the Nike slogan no pain no gain was created with these young adults in mind. Following closely behind Alex was 13 year old Colby Mehmen who posted an improvement of 6.78 points. Congratulations to Alex and Colby for setting high standards for 08. The adult participants showed that age did not stop improvements from being made. The average age of the group of qualified runners was 54. Tim Epting, age 51, improved by 8.80 points. Andy Beach, age 49, finished second by improving 7.24 points. Tim and Andy showed significant improvement in Matching that type of improvement in 2008 should be a real motivator for many. The following individuals will be recognized at the January race for their achievements: Gant Samantha Gant (8) points Childrens Category Alex Wallace (17) 8.06 points Teenager Category Colby Mehmen (13) 6.78 points Teenager Category Tim Epting (51) 8.80 points Adult Category Andy Beach (49) 7.24 points Adult Category Additional individuals may be recognized on race day for their accomplishments. Congratulations to all participants. Best of luck in achieving your 2008 goals! Page 11

13 Insights from the Most Improved Pacers How They Did It! Gant Samantha increased her training she's started running 1/2-1 mile each Sunday with me, and has been doing more Kids' Ks and Fun Runs at events in addition to the Pacers' monthly Kids' K. She cross-trains by playing soccer and has been taking karate twice weekly for a year and a half. She enjoys the Kids' K friendships she has developed with Sarah Heady and Jenny Orth, and is very encouraging of her little brother's running, too. Finally, she really enjoys the ongoing support and encouragement she receives from so many adults, especially her Uncle William Moore, and Pacers Mike Koskan, James Gabhart and James Royal. Maria Moore (Samantha Gant s mom) Wallace This year our coach increased our mileage up to 70 miles/wk. Monday through Friday, we ran 5 miles in the morning and 7 in the afternoon with a 10 mile run on Saturday. Not only did we step up our running, but we also hit the weight room and worked on sleds and plies. I have actually gained weight due to drinking vanilla milkshakes after runs. My advice is to run with friends, as I feel it takes a lot more energy to run alone than running with a group of people who run your same pace. Alex Wallace Mehmen I have increased my miles in preparation for the half marathon, which also helped me in other runs like the 5k. i have improved by close to a minute in the 5k, but not just cause of the increased mileage. I have also been focusing on my core, abs and arms by doing crunches, lots of sit ups, and push ups. My eating habits have also changed since last year. I dropped all the candy bars, cokes, and mainly SUGAR. I have mostly eaten bagels and peanut butter since then. Yummm Colby Mehmen I improved because I ran a lot more in 07. I started running in the summer of 06. Before that, I only ran every once in a while. Jeff convinced me that I could run a half marathon, so in early 07, I decided to train for the DRC Half Marathon in November. I ran every week, increasing my long runs every month. I wanted to finish the DRC Half, and did! I hope to keep running. I actually like it now! Donna Hashe Hashe Matthews I actually ran slightly less miles in 2007 (1250) versus 06 (1300), but more of the 07 miles were of a higher quality faster pace and more hills. The most likely reason I was able to do this was that I started taking liquid GLUCOSAMINE. My joints, which have caused me a lot of problems in the past, have not been this pain-free in a very long time. I set age group (65-69) PRs for 3K, 5K, 8K, 10K, 1 mile and 5 miles in 2007 that were all lower times than my PRs in my previous age group (60-64). I am very pleased with my improvement in 2007 and thanks for the recognition of that improvement! James Matthews Page 13

14 Insights from the Most Improved Pacers How They Did It! (Continued) I ran about 7 or 8 pounds lighter in the second half of the year. I also increased my mileage. I have neither the time nor desire to do many really long runs but a typical run has gone from 6 miles to 8 miles. Those miles can add up. Also, I changed my hard run on Tuesday. Surprisingly, I made it easier. I think I was exerting too much effort in the middle of the week so I backed off a bit which made me fresher for races. I was also blessed with good health for most of the year. (I do a lot of training on a treadmill.) Royal A key catalyst for these changes is result of asking lots of other runners how they train. It s always interesting to me and sometimes a light would go off and I felt I should integrate a part of what someone told me into my training. I would specifically credit Bob Smeby and Joe Landry for two of my changes and a friend who runs in the Luke s All-Comers meets for the lost weight. He told me I was carrying around at least 5 pounds of totally useless fat on my belly for no reason. He said it harshly. Thank goodness someone told me the truth! I altered my diet enough to lose some weight. Don t worry. I still have about 10 pounds of totally useless fat on my belly. I ll be avoiding him at Luke s next summer! James Royal Mims Wow! This year I did a lot of different things that helped improve my running. First, I set a goal to run 40 races, run a half marathon, and to give up soda. Those goals weren't easy to accomplish. Believe it or not, soda was the hardest part. My mom and friend Moni helped me get through the worst craving days. Another step I took to becoming a better distance runner is reevaluating the way I run. My cross country coach constantly reminded me to lower my arms and relax my shoulders. Distance runs were so much easier once I took her advice. The last thing I did was stay involved in lots of running groups. Those were the things that influenced my improvement this year. Ashley Mims I would add that Ashley trained more consistently by running each day and steadily increasing her mileage. Competing in cross country races at school also helped her to do better. April Mims (Ashley s mom) I believe all of my improvement can be attributed to Rick Huggins. When he began his training for Grandma's in Duluth last spring I tried to go with Rick on his long runs. It was the kind of running that I was not getting. I believe it really helped my endurance. Abbott Bob Abbott Page 14
