Auburn Opens Outdoor Season at Georgia Tech The Auburn men s and women s track and field teams will open the outdoor season this Friday and Saturday at the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Georgia Tech. Competition begins Friday with the hammer throw only. On Saturday, field events begin at 10:30 a.m. ET with the shot put and javelin, and running events start at 11:30 a.m. Complete information on the meet can be found by visiting Tigers Seek Qualifying Marks Against Stiff Competition During the Yellow Jacket Invitational, Auburn will compete against a number of quality teams that should provide a stiff challenge. In addition to Auburn and host Georgia Tech, the following schools are scheduled to compete: Clemson, Chattanooga, Connecticut (women only), Georgia, Georgia State, Kentucky, Middle Tennessee State and Virginia Tech. Last Year at the Yellow Jacket Invitational Rain has hindered the Yellow Jacket Invitational for two straight years, including last season when the entire meet was washed out. The previous year, part of the meet was completed before storms forced much of the latter portion of the meet to be cancelled. New Qualification Process for Outdoor Championships During the 2010 outdoor season, the regional qualification marks that individuals and relays had strived to achieve in previous seasons are no longer part of the NCAA Outdoor Championships qualifying process. Instead, Auburn athletes will simply be trying to earn marks that will rank them in the top 48 of the East region (top 24 for relays) at the end of the regular season to qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Round of the NCAA Championships. Recapping the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships Auburn sent just six athletes (three men and three women) to the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., but all six came home as All-Americans and performed well enough for the Tiger women to finish sixth as a team, while the men tied for 12th. Sheniqua Ferguson highlighted the meet by winning a national championship in the 200 meters, and also finished fourth in the 60 meters. Nivea Smith gave Auburn a 1-2 finish in the 200 meters by finishing right behind Ferguson. Auburn s third woman, Joanna Atkins, finished fourth in the 400 meters as the three Tiger women combined to score 28 points. For the men, Marcus Rowland was a two-time All-American, placing third in the 60 meters and fourth in the 200 meters. Ryan

All-SEC Team Honors By virtue of their individual titles at the SEC Indoor Championships, Sheniqua Ferguson and Marcus Rowland were named to the All-SEC first team following the meet. Rowland won the men s 60 meters while Ferguson won the women s 200 meters. Ben Cheruiyot (5,000 meters) Ryan Fleck (high jump) and Nivea Smith (200 meters) were named to the All-SEC second team for finishing second in their respective events. SEC Athlete of the Week Auburn has had one individual SEC Athlete of the Week honoree this year. For her efforts at the season-opening Kentucky Invitational, winning the 60 meters with a time of 7.28 seconds that at the time shared the nation s lead, Sheniqua Ferguson was named SEC Female Co-Runner of the Week on Jan. 19. Auburn All-Americans Auburn has 16 track and field and/or cross country All- Americans currently on the 2010 roster - nine on the men s side and seven from the women s team. From the men s team, Marcus Rowland has five All-American honors to lead the team. Michael DeHaven earned three All-American honors in 2009, Ryan Fleck, Elkanah Kibet and Felix Kiboiywo have all won two career All- American honors, with both of Kiboiywo s and one of Kibet s coming during the cross county season. Sprinter Harry Adams, shot putter Eric Werskey and 4x100-meter relay member Stephen Fly have each earned one All-American honor in track and field, while Ben Cheruiyot was a 2009 cross country All-American. For the women, Joanna Atkins is an NCAA Champion and has three career All-American honors in the 400 meters, while Sheniqua Ferguson was the 2010 NCAA indoor champion in the 200 meters and is a two-time All-American. Holly Knight is a two-time All-American, earning one in track and one in cross country, while hurdlers Amelia Anderson and Danielle Gilchrist and sprinters Cache Armbrister and Nivea Smith have one All- American honor each.
