After the automatic qualifiers are identified, an at-large pool is listed in order of the athlete's best performance of the year. From there a committee will fill the nationals field in each event by starting at the top of the at-large pool until the maximum number of 544 competitors is reached. History at the NCAA Mideast Regional This marks just the seventh year that the regional format has been in place. Over the past six years, the Tigers have won 22 Mideast titles. Last season, Cory Martin won two events for Auburn, breaking his own school record and NCAA leading mark in the hammer throw with a mark of 73.11m (239-10), and also winning the shot put with a throw of 20.05m (65-9.5). Auburn also won both men s hurdles events, as Ty Akins took the 110m hurdles crown in seconds, while Reuben McCoy was the 400m hurdles champion in seconds. Auburn s men finished in second place with 73 points and the women tied for 12th with 21. Auburn student-athletes currently hold five Mideast Regional records. Martin s hammer throw mark from last year broke the regional record, while in 2007 Donald Thomas set the record in the high jump with a mark of 2.30m (7-6.5) and Kerron Stewart won the 200m in Previously, Gabor Mate set the record in the men s discus of 65.05m (213-5) and Markita James is the record-holder in the women s 400m hurdles (54.54). Tigers Rank High In Mideast Region Auburn s teams have 13 marks that rank in the top five (or top three for relays) of the Mideast Region among declared athletes, which would automatically qualify them for the NCAA Championships should they match those ranks. Marcus Rowland is first in the men s 100 meters and second in the 200 meters, Joanna Atkins ranks first in the women s 400 meters and Raevan Harris is tied for first in the women s high jump. Other men in the top five include: Michael DeHaven (200m - ); Eric Werskey (shot put - ) and Ryan Fleck (high jump - T4th). The men s 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays both rank third. Other women in the top five include: Danielle Gilchrist (400m hurdles - 2nd) and Cache Armbrister (200m - 2nd). The women s 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays also both rank second.

Oklahoma Minnesota Texas Tech Auburn Track & Field Notes Tough Competition Awaits The Mideast Region includes all Division I schools from the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee and Wisconsin. There are five men s and five women s teams in the region that are nationally ranked by the USTFCCCA. The men s field includes No. 4 Arkansas, No. 8 LSU, No. 10 Auburn, No. 19 Kentucky and No. 23 Mississippi State. On the women s side, No. 4 LSU is the highest-ranked team in the region, followed by No. 9 Tennessee, No. 11 Michigan, No. 14 Auburn and No. 20 Arkansas. Rowland SEC s Top Freshman Runner Marcus Rowland was honored on May 25, when he was named the SEC Male Freshman Runner of the Year for the outdoor season. Rowland is the top-ranked freshman in the nation in both the 100 meters and 200 meters. Rowland ranks fourth in the country in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 20.48, and his 100-meter time of seconds ranks tied for fourth in the country. He also anchored Auburn s 4x100-meter relay team to a time of that put the Tigers ninth in the country, and anchored the 4x400-meter relay team to the Penn Relays college division title with a time of 3: Top 15 Tigers Auburn has seven athletes on its squad that own marks that ranked them in the top 15 in the NCAA on the final descending order list, plus four relays. Joanna Atkins is ranked third nationally in the women s 200 meters (22.89), fifth in the 400 meters (51.77) and tied for 15th in the 100 meters (11.43). Marcus Rowland is fourth in the men s 200 meters (20.48) and tied for fourth in the 100 meters (10.13). Girma Mecheso is ranked sixth in the 10,000 meters (28:26.09) and Raevan Harris is tied for eighth in the high jump (1.83m). Michael DeHaven is tied for ninth in the 200 meters (20.64), Eric Werskey is 11th in the shot put (18.58m) and Danielle Gilchrist is tied for 11th in the women s 400-meter hurdles (57.83). Auburn s women have the fourth-best time in the 4x100-meter relay (43.74) and the seventh-best mark in the 4x400-meter relay (3:34.40). The men s 4x100- meter relay team ranks ninth among all schools (39.50) and thr 4x400-meter relay team ranks 13th (3:06.34). Young Tigers Excelling Although Auburn has two strong teams this year, the Tigers best days may still lie in the upcoming years. Of the 27 individuals who have qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regional and the NCAA Outdoor Championships, only two - Raevan Harris and Jhak Keegan - are seniors. Eight of the 27 regional and national competitors are freshmen, seven are sophomores and nine are juniors. Auburn in the Polls The Auburn men are ranked 10th nationally in the rankings released May 20 by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, up three spots from the previous week s ranking of No. 13. The Auburn women held steady at No. 14. The rankings are based on regional qualifying marks from the 2009 season. SEC Athletes of the Week Joanna Atkins and Felix Kiboiywo were honored April 21 as the Female and Male Runner of the Week, respectively, following their performances at the War Eagle Invitational. Atkins won the 400 meters in seconds, which ranks No. 3 in the nation and in school history, while also running on winning 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams, both of which posted top-10 national times. Kiboiywo won the 800 meters and 1500 meters, posting the SEC s top time this year in the 1500 and the third-best mark in the 800. On March 31, Girma Mecheso became the first Tiger to earn an SEC weekly award during the outdoor season when he was named SEC Male Freshman of the Week. Mecheso was honored after breaking the school record in the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational while automatically qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Mecheso had a time of 28:26.09, breaking the old record of 28:55.48 set by Andrew Heath in 2006 by nearly half a minute. Auburn athletes won four SEC weekly awards during the indoor season. Marcus Rowland was twice named SEC Male Freshman of the Week, Raevan Harris won an SEC Female Field Athlete of the Week award and Joanna Atkins earned the SEC Female Runner of the Week award.

3 Freshman School Records Set Counting the school record set by Girma Mecheso in the 10,000 meters, Auburn freshmen have set or tied eight new school freshman records during the indoor and outdoor seasons. On the men s side, Mecheso set the outdoor school record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 13:50.80 at the Oregon Relays. Indoors, he also shattered both the 3,000-meter record of 8:10.66 set by Tom Graves in 1979 with his time of 8:04.04, and the 5,000-meter record of 14:37.9 set by Kevin O Keefe in 1979 with his time of 14: Marcus Rowland smashed the 200-meter indoor record of seconds set by Bryan Howard in 1996 with his mark of 20.92, and Ryan Fleck tied the freshmen indoor high jump record of set by Bruce King in For the women, Nivea Smith topped the record in the indoor 200 meters set last year by Cache Armbrister (24.10) with her time of seconds, and CeCe Williams time of 7.04 in the 55 meters beat Jackie Smith s time of 7.09 from Record Holders on the Roster Four Tigers on the 2009 roster currently own five Auburn records (one indoor, four outdoor), plus the Tigers set one relay record during the outdoor season and another during the indoor season. Williams, Smith 4x200m Relay 1: Men Girma Mecheso 10,000m 28: Weerts, DeHaven, Kiboiywo, Kibet Distance Medley (i) 9: Recapping the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships Auburn track and field athletes took home five All-American honors and both the men and women tied for 41st at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships March in College Station, Texas. Four of the All-American honors came from the men s team, as Elkanah Kibet was seventh in the 5,000 meters, Eric Werskey placed eighth in the shot put, and in the 200 meters, Michael DeHaven was eighth and Marcus Rowland was ninth. Auburn also competed in the men s distance medley relay, placing 13th. Joanna Atkins was the lone women s All-American, finishing fourth in the 400 meters. Also competing for the women were Raevan Harris, who placed ninth in the high jump, Cache Armbrister (12th) and Nivea Smith (13th) in the 200 meters, and the 4x400-meter relay team which placed 13th. Auburn Track & Field Notes All-SEC and All-Freshman Indoor Team Honors After winning individual titles at the SEC Indoor Championships, Joanna Atkins and Raevan Harris were named to the All-SEC first team following the meet. Atkins won the 400 meters and Harris took the high jump title. Ryan Fleck, the runner-up in the men s high jump, was named to the All-SEC second team. In addition, the highest-placing freshman in each event is placed on the SEC All-Freshman team, and Auburn had five athletes make that list. Girma Mecheso made the squad in both the 3,000 meters and the 5,000 meters, while others to make the team included Marcus Rowland (men s 60 meters), Chelsey Thomas (women s high jump) and Wesley Wright (men s weight throw). Auburn All-Americans Auburn has nine track and field All-Americans currently on the 2009 roster - five women and four men - plus two other men who have earned cross country All-American honors. Joanna Atkins earned her first All-American honor by placing fourth in the 400 meters at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Champions, while the other four women earned their first All-American honors at last year s NCAA Outdoor Championships: Amelia Anderson (400m hurdles), Danielle Gilchrist (400m hurdles), Raevan Harris (high jump) and Holly Knight (5000m). All four men s All-Americans earned their first honors at the 2009 NCAA indoor meet. Michael DeHaven and Marcus Rowland were All-Americans in the 200 meters, Elkanah Kibet earned the honor in the 5,000 meters and Eric Werskey was an All-American in the shot put. At the 2008 NCAA Cross Country Championships, Knight earned her second career All-American honor and first in cross country, while Kibet also was an All-American and was joined from the men s team by Felix Kiboiywo and Girma Mecheso.
