Spencer Stadium Meet Coach Al Schmidt Regarded and respected nationwide as an authority on endurance running and training, Al Schmidt enters his 21st season at the helm of the Mississippi State s men s and women s track teams. Since his hiring on Oct. 22, 1988, Schmidt has parlayed his 37 years of collegiate coaching experience into many individual and team accomplishments for MSU, Schmidt both on and off of the track. In his previous 20 seasons, Schmidt has produced 33 All- Americans and 35 SEC champions. In 2008, Schmidt coached two athletes to become SEC Champions. Marrissa Harris won the heptathlon with a school record of 5,600 points. Jamil Hubbard won the 400- meter SEC title. During the SEC Outdoor Meet, 14 athletes qualified for the NCAA Regional Meet and 10 athletes scored in their events. The men placed eighth and the women placed 11th. Looking Ahead At What s Coming Up... LAST YEAR S NCAA REGIONALS Mississippi State had one of its best weekends in school history at the 2008 Mideast Regional with a total of 10 USACCTF All-region performers and six NCAA Outdoor Championship qualifiers. On the men s side, Jamil Hubbard won the 400- meter dash (45.72), while Golden Coachman won the 800 with a time of 1: Also finishing first was the 4x400 relay team. O Neal Wilder finished second in the 400-meter dash running 46.20, and Emanuel Mayers finished eighth in the 400 hurdles with a time of Kendall May also ran a personal best time of in the 100-meter dash to claim seventh place. The men totaled 48 points to finish sixth, the highest in school history. The Lady Bulldogs kept with the men s pace and finished the meet with the second-highest placing in school history, 18th. Marrissa Harris and Wendy Copeland had person-best leaps in the long jump to score points for MSU, with Harris jumping to place fourth, and Copeland jumping to finish eighth. Harris kept scoring for MSU, finishing sixth in the 100-meter hurdles. Her time of also set a MSU school record. The women s 4x100-meter relay also ran a time a to claim fifth place. CHERRY OFF TO QUICK START Freshman D Angelo Cherry, who broke the American Junior record in the 60-meter dash at the 2009 USATF Indoor Championships, is quickly making a name for himself. He ran a personal-best seconds to win the Texas Relays university section 100-meter dash crown, a time that is now ranked fourth in the SEC and eighth nationally. BULLDOGS, LADY BULLDOGS TURN FOCUS TOWARD NCAA REGIONALS Following an impressive showing two weeks ago at the SEC Outdoor Championships, Mississippi State s men s and women s track teams now prepare themselves for the Mideast Regional in Louisville, Ky. Combined, MSU is sending 16 athletes, including 10 on the men s side. DOGS, LADY DOGS RANKED The Bulldogs enter the NCAA regionals ranked No. 23 in this week s USTFCCCA polls, while the Lady Bulldogs are ranked No. 71. FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD Just how solid have MSU s runners in the 100- meter hurdles been in recent years? Very. Three current Lady Bulldogs own the top four times Marrissa Harris, Bridgett Rose and La- Quinta Aaron. Harris owns the top two marks of (2008) and (2009), while Rose and Aaron own the third and fourth best times in school history of and 13.77, respectively, set last season. SEC CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP Call it a successful weekend at Florida, where the women totaled a school-record 42 points to finish 11th, while the men collected 44.5 points to place ninth. In all, Mississippi State finished in the Top 5 in eight different events. For the Lady Bulldogs, Marrissa Harris was second in the heptathlon, while LaQuinta Aaaron was fifth. Within the heptathon, Harris and Aaron won the 100-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash, respectively. In the individual events, Harris also placed second in the 100m-hurdles, while Wendy Copeland was second in the long jump. On the men s side, Daryl Brady was fifth in the decathlon, while in the 400m-dash, Dwight Mullings and John Bailey finished second and third, respectively. Emanuel Mayers was fifth in the 400m -hurdles, while the 4x100 relay team was fourth. Robert Scribner closed the weekend for MSU fifth in the 10,000m-run. 2 MSU Stars To Watch... JOHN BAILEY Senior 6-1 Terry, Miss. Events: Sprints Business Administration D ANGELO CHERRY Freshman 5-4 Jonesboro, Ga. Events: Sprints Undecided Meet John Bailey... After being sidelined for nearly six weeks with an injury, Bailey rebounded at the SEC Championships by earning regional qualifying marks in the 400-meter dash, 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Finished third at the SECs in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of Member of the 4x400 releay team that competed at the 2007 and 2008 NCAA Outdoors. Earned 2008 All-SEC honors in 200, 400 and 4x100 relay. Meet D Angelo Cherry... The speedy Cherry is currently ranked No. 8 in the nation and fourth in the SEC with a time of seconds in the 100-meter dash. In the 4x100 relay, Cherry, Justin Christian, Dwight Mullings and Emanuel Mayers own the eighth fastest time in the country (39.45). Holds Georgia state record in the 55- and 100- meter dash Junior Olympic 100-meter champion and anchored Junior Olympic 4x100 relay team. MARRISSA HARRIS Senior 5-7 Memphis, Tenn. Events: Multis Kinesiology DWIGHT MULLINGS Junior 5-11 Jamiaca Events: Sprints Educational Psychology Meet Marrissa Harris... Finished second at the SECs in the heptathlon with 5,579 points, the second-most in school history. She set the record by winning it in 2008 with 5,600 points. In the 100-meter hurdles, her time of at the SECs is the 11th fastest in the country. Owns four school records (60 hurdles, 100 hurdles, pentathlon and heptathlon). Is a six-time All-SEC performer and an All- American. Meet Dwight Mullings... At the SECs, Mullings finished second in the 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of That time also ranks third nationally and second in the SEC.
