UM TAKES THIRD AT EAST REGIONAL: The Miami women's track team placed third at the NCAA East Regional Championship in Gainesville, Fla. Miami recorded 62 points and had three regional champions including Lauryn Williams in the 100-meters, the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay. During her tenure at Miami the Hurricanes have had at least one All-American at every NCAA Outdoor Championship since Miami has had a total of 68 All-Americans (38 outdoor, 30 indoor) and six individual NCAA Champions all since UM WOMEN WIN FOURTH SRAIGHT TITLE: The University of Miami women s track and field team won its fourth consecutive BIG EAST Outdoor Championship this season, and its six championship in the last seven seasons. Williams, Carter) WILLIAMS WINS ZAHARIUS AWARD: Lauryn Williams was named the recipient of 2004 Babe Didrickson Zaharias Award, presented annually by the Sports Society to the most outstanding female professional or amateur athlete. Now in its 23 rd year, former winners of the Babe Didrickson Zaharias award have included track star Evelyn Ashford, volleyball great Flo Hyman, diving legend Wendy Williams and basketball great Nancy Lieberman Kline. WILLIAMS HONORED BY BIG EAST: Junior Lauryn Williams was named the BIG EAST Most Outstanding Track Performer following victories in the 100-meters and 200- meters, and running the second leg of the BIG EAST Champion 4x100-meter relay at the 2004 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Piscataway, N.J. WILLIAMS PULLS OFF THREE-PEAT: Lauryn Williams captured the 2004 BIG EAST 100-meter title marking her third consecutive conference championship in the event. Williams is the first woman runner to win three consecutive 100-meter titles. Pittsburgh's Renee Henderson is the only other BIG EAST runner to win three 100-meter titles finishing first in 1983, 1984 and 1986.

2 TRACK AND FIELD NOTES UM WOMEN RANKED 10TH BY TRACKWIRE: The University of Miami women s track and field team is ranked No. 10 in the season ending Trackwire 25 poll released June 4th. Darden won the BIG EAST Outdoor title, finished second at the NCAA East Regional and broke the school-record in the event. THE FIRST EVER: Junior Amber Williams is the first Hurricane to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the heptathlon. Her mark of 5,212 points at the BIG EAST Championships established a UM record. CHARLES SETS CANADIAN JR RECORDS: Tabia Charles set a Canadian Junior outdoor record in the triple jump with a meters ( ) at the Texas Relays on April 3. Earlier this season she established a new Canadian Junior indoor record in the triple jump with a leap of meters ( ). Her jump of meters is the second best jump by a Canadian this outdoor season. WILLIAMS SETS PENN RELAYS RECORD: Lauryn Williams set a Penn Relays record posting a time of in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash on April 23, Her time bettered the old meet record of set by LSU s D Andre Hill in Williams went on to win 100-meter title the next day in a time of seconds. MIAMI WOMEN IN THE NCAA: The Miami women's track team finished in a tie for 10th at the 2003 NCAA Indoor Championships. The finish marked the best finish in schoolhistory and the fifth straight season in which the Hurricanes finished in the top-30. 3 TRACK AND FIELD NOTES WILLIAMS NAMED ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Lauryn Williams was named the United States Track Coaches Association Athlete of the Week on April 12 after running world-leading marks in the 100-meters and 200-meters at the Miami Gatorade Invitational on April 10. THREE EARN ALL-AMERICA HONORS: Three Hurricanes earned a total of five All-America honors at the 2004 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Lauryn Williams earned All-America honors in the 60-meter and 200- meters, Tabia Charles earned All-America honors in the long jump and triple jump, and freshman Brenda Faluade earned All-America honors in the long jump. Charles is the first jumper in school-history to earn All-America honors in both the long jump and triple jump. DEEM AND STAFF HONORED AGAIN: Head women's coach Amy Deem and her staff were named the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year at both the BIG EAST Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Indoor award was the second straight for Deem and her staff, while the Outdoor honor was the fourth straight for Deem and the seventh in the last nine seasons. DEEM RANKS NO. 1: Head women's coach Amy Deem won her sixth BIG EAST Outdoor Championship this season. She has won more BIG EAST titles than any other women's coach in conference history. Her sixth win moves her alone into second all-time among all track coaches (men or women). Williams won gold medals in the 100-meters and the 4x100-meter relay at the 2003 Pan American Games as well as a silver medal as a member of the USA 4x100-meter relay at the 2003 World Championships. Following her freshman season she won the gold medal in the 100-meters at the 2002 World Junior Championships as well as a silver medal in the 4x100-meter relay.
