FSU s Top-Ranked Track and Field Squad Heads To ACC Indoor Championships. The Seminoles No. 2 men and No. 14 women will compete for the conference title this weekend. Tallahassee, Fla. -- The track and field team will begin its quest for the No. 2-ranked men s sixth-straight ACC Indoor Championship a program-first conference title for the No. 14 women this Thursday, Feb. 28 in Chapel Hill, N.C. The men obviously are going to have to step up, said head coach Bob Braman. They ve got a five-year winning streak going and we ve got to have a good meet to hang on to it. At the same time of course we re trying to come out of this meet healthy and get ready for the next two weeks, which are absolutely huge as we try to qualify for the national championships. It s a tough balance. We want to win and keep the streak going, but we also want to be in good shape to try and win a national title. The Seminole men rank at the top of the ACC chain this season while the women trail Virginia Tech by three spots in the latest USTFCCCA polls. In program history, the men have captured six championships overall and finished outside the top five just twice since FSU joined the ACC in On the ladies side we have an actual chance to win the championship this year, said Braman. But it would take a huge performance to knock off Virginia Tech. It would be exciting if we could pull it together for that, but we re a little bit dinged up. We ve got a couple of injuries that could affect our chances at getting that title. The women s squad, who finished fourth in last year s competition, has reached second place twice in 26 years, and own just three finishes outside the top five. 4 ACC Notes Men s Team Going For Sixth-Straight Indoor Title Over the last five years, the men s track team has been the dominant program in the ACC. The Seminoles come into this year s ACC Indoor Championship looking to tie the second-longest run of team titles at six. Prior to rattling off its fivestraight, Clemson won a half dozen. Maryland holds the record as the Terrapins won 25 in a row from 1956 to Seminoles Looking For First-Time Champions If is going to win its sixth-straight title, it will have to rely on some athletes to step up for the first time. All five of last year s individual champions will not be at the meet this year. Dual winner Andrew Lemoncello and one-mile champion Tom Lancashire graduated and 400 meter champion Ricardo Chambers is now running professionally. Two-time 200m champion will not run in this year s championship. In addition, Mark Buckingham (Huddesfield, England) is the only returning member of the top distance medley team. Joining Buckingham as the only other returning All-ACC performers from last year are sprinter Michael Ray Garvin (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) and hurdler (Snellville, Ga.). Garvin was the runner-up in both the 60m and 200m races last season while Brunson took third in the 60m hurdles. All-told FSU brings back seven athletes who scored in last year s championship. FSU Looks To Jumpers For A Lift Last season won its fifth title without getting a single point in either the triple jump or the long jump. That will change this season as the Seminoles have the top two athletes in both events coming into the meet. Freshman (Mandedza, Zimbabwe) has the second-longest jump in the country this year at 7.93m (26-0) while senior Rayon Taylor (Sanguinetti, Jamaica) is fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 16.22m (53-2.5). Two other field events could prove to be fruitful for the Seminoles. Junior (Jupiter, Fla.) and sophomore (Pompano Beach, Fla.) are tied for the second-best high jump in the league at 2.10m ( ). Rookie (Santiago, Chile) is tied for fourth in the pole vault with a height of 5.15m ( ). Seminoles Try To Continue Event Dominance During its run of five-straight championships, has dominated several events. In the 200m dash, has won the last four races to go along with three-straight titles in the 400m dash, one mile run and run. The Seminoles have the top four 200m times in the league this year with Michael Ray Garvin third in the country behind at Freshman Brandon Byram (Gallatin, Tenn.) is third in the ACC at and (Virginia Beach, Va.) sit fourth at Clark is a contender to win the 400m as his personal-best is an NCAA provisional time. 5 ACC Notes long throw of 18.39m (60-4) is second in the league. Rookie Michael Putnam (Miami, Fla.) could earn some points in the shot put. His top toss of 16.27m (53-4.5) is ninth going into the league meet. Women Seeking First Indoor Title While the men s team is trying to stay atop the ACC Indoor mountain, the women s team is trying to reach the peak for the first time. After a fourth-place finish last year, the Seminoles come into this year s league summit with one of their strongest contingency in years. s best finish at the indoor meet is a pair of secondplaces spots at the 1997 & 2000 championships. Seminoles Looking To Get Back On Medal Stand Last season was the first time since the 2001 campaign that Florida State s women s team didn t have at least one individual champion. The Seminoles didn t come home completely empty handed as the 4x400m relay team won the event with a time of 3: FSU will be in a battle with Miami for the event title this year, but it stands a good chance as half of the members of the 2007 wining team are back: and KayKay Richemond (Sufferin, N.Y.). Fab Freshman Williams Lead Women s Team No freshman in certainly the ACC, if not the country, has had an impact than s jumper (Kingston, Jamaica). On campus for just over a month, she already has the best triple jump mark in the country at 13.75m ( ), which is the FSU indoor record and the second-longest jump in school history. Williams also has the best ACC long jump this year at 6.22m (20-5). The Seminoles have never had an indoor triple jump champion and are seeking their first long jump title since Kim Jones in Kuijken Setting The Pace For Distance Crew Picking up where she left off during her All-America cross country campaign, junior (Nijmegen, Netherslands) comes into the ACC meet as the favorite in the after her school-record time of 9:08.75 that rates third in the country. Rookie Hannah England (Oxford, England) is rated third in the conference with a time of 9: Freshman Sprinter Rodgers Bolsters Women s Team If it weren t for spectacular debut, (Tampa, Fla.) may be talked about as the best freshman in the conference. In her early career she already has four top 10 marks in four different events. She has an NCAA provisional mark in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.40 and she is just a tenth of a second from qualifying in the 60m dash. Hayes Completes Freshman Trio It may be safe to say that s women s program has the best freshman class in the conference. Along with and, rookie thrower (Charlotte, N.C.) has been a big factor during the indoor campaign. At the Tyson Invitational she broke the school record indoor and outdoor with a toss of 16.29m ( ), which is an NCAA provisional mark. Seminoles Setting Themselves Up For NCAAs Going into this weekend s ACC Championships is looking to add to its already impressive list of NCAA automatic and provisional qualifiers. The men s team had four athletes with their tickets already punched for Fayetteville: (200m), (), () and Rayon Taylor (Triple Jump) with seven more provisional marks. On the women s side, () and () are set while there are four other provisional standards met. Record Setting Indoor Campaign For Seminoles Most records tend to fall at conference or national championships when athletes are at their peak, but members of both teams have gotten a head start on taking down school marks this year.
