In 2004, Hans Uldal had to redshirt his indoor season due to surgery to repair an artery wrapped around his kidney. A set back for sure, but it would be hard to believe after seeing the outdoor production Uldal put on. Uldal became the first Tiger decathlete to make the Olympic games in 80 years after breaking the school record with 7,733 points at his home Norwegian National Championships. Uldal will be the only returning collegian in the decathlon to have competed in the 2004 Olympic Games. Not to be outdone was his performance at his second appearance at an NCAA Championship. After the first day Uldal stood in 16 th overall. Gaining three personal bests on day two catapulted him to fifth in the country and earned him All-America status. Uldal also was runner-up in the Big 12 in the decathlon. More greatness to come from the young decathlete. Uldal s Norwegian counterpart is Bjorn Sommerfeldt. Earning All- Big 12 honors at the indoor Big 12 Championships in the heptathlon, Sommerfeldt will look to build upon his personal-best score of 7,006 to become a force within the conference. Senior Brandon Goebbert is returning as a three-time All-Big 12 performer in the combined events. With personal bests in all 10 events combining for a possible score above 7,000, Goebbert is prone to become a breakout star in the conference during his final seasons. Tiger senior Benjamin Vrbicek also returns for his final year as a Tiger. Vrbicek will add strength to Tigers high jumping core as well. Newcomers Kaela Rorvig and Sterling Hayden will provide some excitement. Rorvig was a multi-talented, multi-sport athlete in high school and will look to translate proficiency in many skills to the heptathlon. Liz Young will return as the Tigers veteran in the heptathlon. Also a talented high jumper and pole vaulter, Young is looking to score in the conference s combined events to add to her All-Big 12 performance in the high jump. Seven all-americans have been produced in the last 30 years, including three in the last six years. Teri LeBlanc won two of her five all-american awards in the heptathlon event in 1988 and LeBlanc currently holds the highest finish by a Missouri combined event athlete with her fourth place finish at the 1988 NCAA Championships. Recently, Hans Uldal qualified for the Olympic Games in 2004 along with a fifth-place NCAA Championship All-American finish and was runner-up at the Big 12 Conference Championship. Also in 2004, Jessica Stockard claimed a Big 12 Championship in the heptathlon. Uldal was the first Tiger decathlete to appear in the Olympic Games since 1920 when Brutus Hamilton won the silver medal in the event. None has been more successful for the Tigers in the Big 12 Conference than four-time Big 12 Champion Knut Sommerfeldt, who at the 2003 Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Austin won his third consecutive decathlon title. Teri LeBlanc, Missouri's record holder in both the pentathlon and heptathlon, earned five All-American honors during her time at Mizzou. In 1988 and 1989, LeBlanc finished in fourth and fifth in the nation, respectively, in the event. The long jump was also a big event for LeBlanc, as she captured two all- American awards from that event. In 2004, Tiger post-collegian heptathletes Michelle Moran and Fiona Asigbee made a huge apperance in the USATF Olympic Trials. Moran, scored a personal-best of 5,842 placing seventh in the country. A Brief History The decathlon was competed for the first time in the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm and the first scoring tables were based on earning 1,000 points for breaking the Olympic record in each event this effort was reconsidered by 1934 as the Finns came up with a similar conversion that we use today that uses performance-progressive standards. An athlete could score up to 1,360 points per event with this table throughout the 1950s and 60s, mathematicians and physicists used statistical data to derive a set of tables based on averages and physics in 1985, the IAAF (governing body of the world s athletics [Track and Field]) devised a set of tables similar to those used in 1934, with standards based on the value of performances and not on statistical or scientific basis... for women, the heptathlon began in 1982.

Combined Event Rules Some rules concerning the modern combined events... the event spans two days... unlike other events, the decathlon and heptahtlon requires one additional false start for disqualification from the organizational rules, and records are allowed up to four meters-per-second on wind aided events... a competitior who does not start each event is disqualified and shall not be considered in the results... a no-height in the high jump/pole vault, or a foul score in the shot put/discus/javelin/long jump counts for zero points in that event; however, the competitior is not disqualified from the rest of the competition.
