Then, after Custis throw fell short, Kansas Battle stepped in the ring. In a moment reminiscent to the indoor championships, Battle topped Woolsey at 63-10½ (19.47m) to wow the crowd. Woolsey at the indoor meet topped Battle on his final throw to take the conference title and Battle yesterday won the men s hammer throw on his final toss. The throws weren t over. Englin was part of a 1-2 American sweep of the men s shot put in a Pan-Am Games that pits the best athletes from North and South America under 20-years-old in the three-day meeting. It s all about keeping with that American shot putting tradition that we were able to uphold here. I was a little nervous until I took my first two practice throws and then it started to come to me. My first throw wasn t the best, but I seemed to improve in every other throw. It was a great atmosphere, a lot of people in the stands and a great facility, just an amazing feeling. Englin capped a spectacular start to his Tiger career. Before grabbing Silver at both the Pan-Am Juniors and USATF Junior Championships, Englin grabbed All-Big 12 status at both the indoor and outdoor conference championships. At the NCAA Regionals, Englin was part of a national-high four shot-putter contingent from Missouri and placed a surprising ninth, coming inches from the at-large selection pool for the NCAA Championships.

11 Cross Country Recap The 2005 Season Meet-by-Meet Recaps Cross Country History...112

12 Cross Country Season Recap 2005 No one could have predicted the way Missouri s cross country season would have turned out. With twists and turns taken throughout the course of the 2005 campaign, valuable members of the team were plagued with injuries forcing Missouri s younger staff to step up and fill the voids. A true growing season for the Tiger team, Missouri earned praise from onlookers astonished at the determination and strength of such a young group of student-athletes. Despite setbacks, three Tigers earned Big 12 Conference Runner-of-the Week honors and together the men s and women s team s combined for 24 top-10 finishes over the course of six meets. Ending the season on a high note, senior Matt Noonan (Baldwin City, Kan.) made his first NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship appearance after qualifying individually at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in Iowa City, Iowa. The season, although not one many could have foreseen, was filled with highlights and gave fans a glimpse of what lies ahead in Missouri s cross country future. Opening the season at home Sept. 10, on the A.L. Gustin Golf Course, Missouri s men and women took on teams from Eastern Illinois, Illinois State, UMKC and Wichita State in the 12th annual Missouri Cross Country Challenge. Sweeping both team titles, in the 5K and 8K races, senior Tim Ross (Alto, Mich.) came through with his third Missouri Cross Country Challenge first-place finish, completing the course in 25: The Tiger men stole all top- six finishes in the race, with redshirt freshman Michael Barrows (Flint, Mich.) finishing second in 25: On the women s side, the Tigers entered 10 runners for competition. Senior Valerie Lauver (Allen, Texas), the Oct. 4 Big 12 Runner of the Week, finished second on the 5K course, (17:57.94) ahead of preseason favorite and returning All-American Amanda Bales (Bettendorf, Iowa) who finished third. The race proved to be Bales final of the season as she was forced to the sidelines with injury. Finishing the race fourth overall and third for the Tiger women was sophomore Maddie Schueler (Louisville, Ky.). Running the course in 18:05.59, the time was a two-second improvement on her finish from one year earlier. Staying within state borders, Head Coach Jared Wilmes and the Tiger squads ventured to Joplin, Mo., for the Southern Stampede, Sept. 17. A 5K race for the women and 8K challenge for the men, the Missouri Southern Cross Country Course of Southern Missouri gave MU s younger runners a chance to spread their wings and compete. Ranked 19th in the nation entering the morning competition, Missouri s women finished first of 35 programs, with senior Kristin Hansen taking fourth in 17: For her effort, the Milford, Iowa native was named Big 12 Runner of the Week. Senior Chase Hall (Tulsa, Okla.) crossed the line first for the Missouri men, taking 19th in 25: Senior Matt Noonan was at-large qualifier for the NCAA Championships, finishing just outside of the top third 108 Next up for the harriers was a trip to South Bend, Ind., for the 50th running of the men s 8K and women s 5K Notre Dame Invitational. Hosted by Notre Dame, nine of the nation s top25 teams ran the Notre Dame Golf Course, with both of Missouri s teams finishing ninth. Racing first, the Missouri women were led by Lauver who improved on her 2004 Notre Dame Invitational finish (97th) with a 10th place showing in 17:14. In his final outing of the season, Ross claimed tophonors for the Missouri men, racing his way to a 12th place finish in 24:01 and was followed closely by Noonan who completed the course in 26th (24:25). Although the race was Ross last, it marked not only his best time ever on an 8K course, but set a Missouri school record as well. Ross was a two-time All-Big 12 Runner of the week in 2005, his final recognition garnered following the Notre Dame Invitational. The loss of Bales and Ross forced the Tigers to suffer growing pains. Younger runners such as sophomore Kasey Kimball (Eureka, Mo.) and true freshman Ellen Ries (Ryan, Iowa) on the women s side and true freshman Garrett Jeffries (Clarkson Valley, Mo.) and sophomore Billy Bell (Chesterfield, Mo.) on the men s team were now being counted on to help with team scoring. With strength and leadership provided by Noonan, the Tigers finished second at the 8K Bradley Classic in Peoria, Ill., Oct. 14, as Noonan challenged Cristiano Mauricio of Windsor College on the Newman Golf Course for first place. Noonan finished the race second and was followed across the line by junior Colten Green (Roach, Mo.) who earned his third top10 career finish with a seventh place showing in 25: Bell, took ninth (25:39.88). Lauver continued her dominate ways in the women s race with a second place finish on the 6K course, with Schueler and Hansen earning the third and fourth place honors, respectively. Prior to the start of post-season action, 14 members of Missouri s cross country team were awarded Academic All-Big 12 honors, with 13 of those individuals named to the first team. The 10th annual Big 12 Cross Country Championship was held Oct. 28, in Waco, Texas, on the Bear Run Cross Country Course. Hosted by Baylor, the Missouri women completed the relatively flat course in fourth place while defending Big 12 Champions Colorado took first. Her fourth top-10 finish of the season, Lauver was awarded All-Big 12 honors for her ninth place finish in 21:08. Noonan finished first of the Tiger men on the 8K course, racing to a 21st place finish in 24:38., followed by Jeffries (37th) and senior 800-meter runner turned cross country athlete Neville Miller (St. Louis, Mo.) in 42nd. The Tiger men took fifth overall, with the Buffaloes of Colorado earning their 10th straight men s team title. A two week respite was enough for the Tigers as they traveled to Iowa City, Iowa, for the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. Up

13 against four of the nation s finest teams, the Missouri women took seventh with the men finishing sixth. Noonan provided the day s highlights running the race of his career and exchanging the lead for first place on the 10K course before finishing third of 142 competitors in 30:58. For his accomplishments, Noonan received his first NCAA All-Midwest Region Team nod and advanced to his first NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. A day like none other for Noonan, his finished tied Missouri s highest finish for a male at the Regional meet in over 10 years and made him the second straight Missouri male individual to qualify for the Championship meet. CROSS C ecap OUNTR RY 05 Noonan traveled to Terre Haute, Ind., for the 67th running of the men s NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. Competing on the 10K Wabash Family Sports Center course, the determined senior finished 90th in 30:54.21 and became the first Tiger in five years to crack the top-100 and first since 1977 to complete the race in just over 30 minutes. -- Emily Gatewood Team Photo (L to R) Front Row: Amanda Bales, Anne Case-Halferty, Trisa Nickoley, Kate Greer, Summer Owens, Mallory Van Ness, Emily Ramsey, Kristina Werner, Rachel Stollings; Second Row: Allison Werner, Becca Miller, Kristin Hansen, Carolyn Rauen, Nicole Johnson, Kasey Kimball, Maddie Schueler, Amber Warren, Ashley Guy, Ashley Patten, Ellen Ries; Third Row: Jared Wilmes (Head Coach), Billy Bell, Josh Davis, Brian Graybill, Michael Barrows, Tipper O Brien, Bryce Malloy, Tim Cornell, Dan Hedgecock, Chase Hall, Garett Jeffries, Rebecca Wilmes (Asst.
