1 / 6 USE AND INSTALLATION Thank you for choosing the Basketbuoy, a Finnish quality product suited for boats with a maximum beam of 2.2m and with a maximum weight of 800kg (motor included). The maximum draught of the boat can be from 35cm to 45cm depending on the depth of the shore. A Basketbuoy kit contains everything you need apart from timber, tools and anchoring/mooring supplies. Study the instructions for assembly and use carefully before assembly to enable smooth workflow. Check also out the table indicating the height/depth of the structure with various settings. The overall depth of the Basketbuoy can be adjusted under assembly between 65cm and 105cm. This is how deep your shore waters should be even when the water level is low. Timber Changing the measurements of the side boards and the middle bar enables you to build a Basketbuoy best suited to your boat. The distance between the attachment points in the transom and in the bow minus 1m 1.5m is a suitable overall length. When secured, a boat will thus settle precisely in the middle of the Basketbuoy without being able to move lengthwise. Example: timber required for building a 4m (maximum length) Basketbuoy Side boards, impregnated wood for example, 28x120mm 4 pcs 3910mm The middle bar, impregnated wood,50x100mm 1 pc 3000mm A stopper/support bar, impregnated wood, 50x100mm 2 pcs 2490mm (this measurement remains always the same) The buoy weight and the attachment supplies You will also need a buoy weight suitable for your boat, some chain and some shackles for attaching. The normal recommended length for the buoy weight chain is approximately 2.5 times the depth of the water. You will also need a separate chain to attach the Basketbuoy to from the front and from the rear with two shackles. This chain should be long enough to reach from the attachment point ashore/on the pier and below the Basketbuoy so that, behind the attachment point in the Basketbuoy, there remains about 1.5m of chain for attaching the actual buoy chain with an acid-resistant shackle. Note that the entire length of the chain will run under the Basketbuoy. Consult a dealer or the manufacturer to check the buoy weight and the chain strength best suited for your boat. The Basketbuoy weighs about 85kg and you can add that to your boat s overall weight when asking for suitable supplies. If the shore is very deep and/or if you use a particularly heavy chain, place a middle floater on the buoy chain to keep it partially afloat. We do not recommend installing a Basketbuoy in shores more than 10m deep. The changing circumstances and the texture of the sea bottom should be studied with care. The following example will help you determine the suitable attachment supplies. Example: Your boat, your motor and the Basketbuoy weigh about 600kg in all. The harbor is a relatively sheltered one with a depth of about 3m over a sand/mud bottom. The overall length of your Basketbuoy is 4m and the attachment point ashore is a loop on the rock at 2m from the suggested front edge of the Basketbuoy. The buoy weight: a buoy ring of about 35kg that can be installed in summer as well and which can be serviced with relative ease later on. The buoy ring sinks partially in the mud/sand which enables the light weight.
2 / 6 The chain: 7.5m (2.5 times the 3m depth) plus 7m (2m to the shore plus 5m in case the overall length of the Basketbuoy is 4m) of strong galvanized chain of about 8mm. The shackles: five acid-resistant M8 shackles (one for the shore, two for attaching the Basketbuoy, one for attaching the assembly to the anchor chain, and one for attaching the assembly to the buoy weight). INSTALLATION 1. Sawing the timber Saw the timber to size according to the example above. If you want to shorten the overall length of the Basketbuoy by 50cm for example, observe this in the measurements of the side boards and of the middle bar. We do not recommend an overall length of over 4m. Please remember the eventual changes in the measurements when calculating how much chain is needed. 2. Drilling holes into the timber a. Drill two 7mm holes at the two ends of the sideboards at 65mm from the ends and at 30mm from the edge (see picture).
3 / 6 b. Set the middle bar on an elevated stand so that the support bar fits at the end of the middle bar. Drill two 11mm holes at the two ends of the middle bar (see picture) and two 11mm holes at the ends of the stopper/support bar (see picture). 3. Assembly a. Fasten the support bars and the mounting plate into the middle bar with 10x80mm bolts, washers and lock nuts (see the picture). Note that the support bars should point upwards and outwards from the middle bar both at the front and at the rear. b. You can adjust the height of the Basketbuoy to your needs. Start by making sure that the settings are sufficient for the draught of the boat so that the depth of the Basketbuoy does not become a problem ashore. If possible, measure the height of the upper side board to match the rubbing strip of the boat. When you have checked these measurements, you will still need to determine the suitable height of the crossbar or of the stopper/support bar so that the boat will pass over them but the motor shaft won t. The stopper bar is there both to support the construction and to make sure that the boat will under no circumstances pass too far into the Basketbuoy, which might damage the motor.

VERTICAL BAR PART OF VERTICAL BAR WITH ATTACHM ENT/SUPPORT PLATE As a rule of thumb, 60% of the floater will be under water when the Basketbuoy is put to water. It is also important that at least 15cm of the support plate of the vertical bar enters the floater. NB! The measurements given in the table are indicative only and may differ from those announced due to the quantity and weight of the timber used. This is why the measurements should always be checked separately upon launching and the height readjusted if necessary. c. Slide the floaters from below into the four vertical bars. Fasten the vertical bars from the point chosen to the support bar with 10x60mm bolts and with a lock nut. The attachment/support plate of the vertical bar should point backward from the front edge of the Basketbuoy and forward from the rear edge. Leave the bolts untightened at this step to ease assembly.
5 / 6 d. Attach the board sides into the outside of the attachment plate of the vertical bar with 6x45mm bolts, with washers and with lock nuts (see pictures below). Note that the lock nut is attached onto the outside surface of the board/of the Basketbuoy. It is equally important that the lower side board is immediately atop the pontoon. This will lock the pontoon at desired height. It is a good idea to have two people attach the side boards as one of the two will thus be able to support the board while the other attaches it. e. Attach the bumper protection plates to the rear edge of the Basketbuoy at the level of the vertical poles/bars (see picture) with 4x35mm screws and washers to match the upper edge of the upper side board. Tighten the screws enough as to make them penetrate into the cellular plastic for protection. f. Attach the stopper/support bar at the desired height into the rear and front edges of the Basketbuoy with 10x110mm bolts, lock nuts and washers. Finally, tighten the joint between the vertical bar and the support bar. The Basketbuoy assembly is now complete. 4. Putting to water Before you put your Basketbuoy to water, attach the chain running below the Basketbuoy with shackles to the attachment plates at the ends of the middle bar (back and front alike). There should be 1.5m of extra chain after the attachment point at the rear edge of the Basketbuoy and as much chain as is needed at the front for attaching the Basketbuoy from ashore. The chain should be as tight as possible below the central bar and run below the stopper/support bar in front and at the rear. It is a good idea to attach the ends of the chain with lines to the vertical bars so you won t have to look for them later on when the Basketbuoy is in water.
6 / 6 If a SeaBoost Powerturf (of S or M width) is used in conjunction with the Basketbuoy, it is a good idea to already attach the lines of the turf to the Basketbuoy. The lines are fastened to the vertical bar deep enough below the floater pontoon as not to rub against the pontoon. It is a good idea to tie the loose ends of these lines as well to the structures above water to have them readily available later on. Your Basketbuoy is now ready for putting to water. 5. Attaching the Basketbuoy into the buoy chain and ashore It is a good idea to measure and install the buoy weight and the chain in such a way that they will be readily in place for installation. The aim is that the Basketbuoy is more or less in the middle of the boat s attaching points when measured lengthwise. The boat should also be secured at a suitable distance from ashore/from the pier. Fine-tuning can be carried out if needed according to the examples below. a. Leave some slack into the buoy chain. This will allow you to attach the chain fastened to the Basketbuoy with a shackle directly to a suitable point in the buoy chain. b. If the buoy weight is of such a size that it can be moved with a pulley for instance, the Basketbuoy can be installed at a sufficient distance and subsequently pulled into a suitable spot. Tighten the chain on the shore-side to a suitable degree and attach it to a fastening point ashore/on the pier with a shackle. One can also attach the Basketbuoy from ashore with a high-quality line of sufficient thickness. This may be a good idea if the boat is to be attached to a bollard and/or if it is desired to change the attachment point on the pier from time to time. The eventual other supplies such as lines and a Powerturf can be fastened into the Basketbuoy. NB! Make a separate check to ensure once more that the motor under no circumstances can touch the chain and that the motor shaft cannot slide over the stopper bar. If there is a danger that the motor makes contact with the chain, this problem can be solved by installing the Basketbuoy closer to the shore. Make also sure that the side structures of the Basketbuoy cannot damage the boat when landing and add more bumper protection if needed. 6. Use, service and maintenance The Basketbuoy has been designed for normal conditions of use and attachment. A good example are shores where boats can be attached without problems in any kind of weather. As a user, you are the best expert on the conditions in your port. That is why you are ultimately responsible for any eventual damages. Check the structures of the Basketbuoy at regular intervals. Items to check include especially the chains, the shackles and their points of attachment as well as the condition of the, support and stopper bar. When you notice significant wear and material fatigue, it is time to replace the parts with new ones. If you clean the pontoons do not use a pressure washer, chemicals, or excessive force. We recommend removing the Basketbuoy and lifting it ashore for the winter. In case ice does not move or pack on your shore, it is also possible to let the Basketbuoy stay in water for the winter. The Basketbuoy is removed in reverse order of attachment, that is, first from ashore, after which the chain is lifted up behind the Basketbuoy with a boathook for instance, and then the shackle is removed from the buoy chain. Remember also to attach to the end of the buoy chain a line in the other end which is to be attached ashore so in readiness for the next spring. The SeaBoost Basketbuoy has a two-year guarantee for manufacturing and material faults. We wish you a most enjoyable and safe boating season! SeaBoost Oy
