WORK IN PROGRESS January Reporter: Dave Yotter HMS Bellona 1760 Chris Carl HMS Bellona was a 74-gun Bellonaclass third-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy. Designed by Sir Thomas Slade, she was a prototype for the iconic 74-gun ships of the latter part of the 18 th century. Her particulars were: Tons burthen: 1615 bm; Length: 168 ft (gundeck), 138 ft (keel); Beam: 46 ft 11 in; Draught: 21 ft 6 in; depth of hold: 19 ft 9 in: Complement: 650 officers and men; Armament; Lower gundeck: 28 X 32 pounders; Upper gundeck: 28 X 18 pounders; QD; 14 X 9 pounders; Fc: 4 X 9 pounders. Chris is making progress on his new model of HMS Bellona. This is being built from a plank on bulkhead Corel kit in 1:100 scale. All bulkhead frames are installed on the keel and the main, forecastle and poop decks are in place. Also installed are the decks in the great cabin and head areas. There is some photo etch supplied for the forward bulkhead under the forecastle deck. This has been installed and it needs to be painted but it is under the forecastle deck planking. He was thinking about doing the painting in two layers - after the first color and then removing the first layer of paint from the high spots using a finger or toothpick. It was also suggested to just remove the forecastle deck planking for better access to the photo etch when painting. The hull planking is 25% completed. Gunport boxes are in place where half gun barrels will be installed on the lower gundeck and the decked over portions of the upper gundeck. The exposed area of the upper gun deck will have fully rigged carriage guns. Confederate Picket Boat Bob Penikas Bob brought in a paper model of a Confederate Picked Boat. The model represents a boat of about 28 feet long with places for 10 sweeps. Boat howitzers could be mounted in the bow of ship s launches for use when going ashore. Bronze boat howitzers came in a number of calibers and some were rifled. This one is a 12-pounder smooth bore. It could be

loaded with rounds of shot, shell or grape. Picket boats could also be armed with spar torpedoes. A spar torpedo is a weapon consisting of a bomb placed at the end of a long pole, or spar, and attached to the boat. The weapon is used by running the end of the spar into the enemy ship. Spar torpedoes were often equipped with a barbed spear at the end, so it would stick to wooden hulls. A fuse could then be used to detonate it. E. C. Singer invented the spar torpedo during the American Civil War, a private engineer who worked on secret projects for the benefit of the Confederate States of America. Singer s torpedo was detonated by means of a trigger mechanism adapted from a rifle lock. The spring-loaded trigger was detonated by means of a long cord attached to the attacking vessel. The attacking vessel rammed its target, embedding the barbed torpedo in its hull, and then backed off. When the attacker reached the limit of the trigger cord, the torpedo was detonated. Unlike ample Civil War Union Picket Boat coverage, researching historic information on Confederate Picket Boats rendered nothing useable from the internet or Bob s Civil War enthusiast friends. The model was downloaded free from and printed on 67 lb Weusau Exact Vellum Bristol paper. The parts were given a protective acrylic gloss coating (Krylon spray can) prior to cutting out and build. The completed model is 4.5 inches long (making the scale approximately 1:21). Several coats of Future acrylic floor wax was then applied during the build and on the finished model. The howitzer barrel was finished with metallic copper watercolor that was helped along with some yellow and green for patina. USA Coastal Cannon Don Dressel Don brought in a little model of a coastal cannon made from an Artesania Latina kit that he obtained from a yard sale for $ Don indicated that the kit was a fun project that was relatively simple to build and provided a break from the larger and more complicated ship model kits. In a similar vane, Don also obtained another Artesania Latina cannon kit while attending the NRG Conference in Florida last year a 24 lb. Naval cannon which will also be another easy build in the future. The cannon kits are fun little kits, inexpensive, and can be built rather quickly. For Don, it will be interesting to see if this sparks any interest in the SMA membership in the future. The cannon provided with the kit is already cast and the cannon carriage and wheels are provided as part of the kit. All that is required is assembly.

Dutch Fluyt Derfflinger Don Dressel Don also brought in his ongoing project of masting and rigging the Dutch fluyt Derfflinger. Progress has been made on the standing rigging and all the ratlines have been completed on the shrouds. The lower stays have been installed on the fore, main and mizzen masts. There is a lot more standing rigging that has to be completed including the topmast stay, the crowsfeet on fore and main and the backstays. One of the difficulties with this rigging is the lack of detailed plans, but fortunately there is a lot of information available on Dutch fluyt ships. The just released book 17 th century Dutch Merchant Ships by A. J. Hoving (see last months SMA Newsletter) as well as the plans and book The Ships of Abel Tasman by Hoving give all the information needed to complete the masting and rigging process of a Dutch fluyt. Don is using linen line in his stash that has been collected over the years to complete the rigging along with Lloyd Warner blocks as well as blocks and rigging details from the old Art Am Fuesta kit, which is no longer in production. The closest kit model currently available of this ship is by Euromodel. The plans provided in both books listed above supply all the information required to scratch build a Dutch fluyt if desired. USS Swordfish (SSN-579) Dave Yotter Your reporter brought back his 1:96 scale model of the boat he served aboard in the mid 60s, USS Swordfish (SSN- 579). Swordfish, the second of a class of four Skate-class submarines, was the fourth nuclear submarine built and commissioned in the United States Navy. The contract to build her was awarded to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard of Kittery, Maine on 18 July 1955, and her keel was laid down on 25 January She was launched on 27 August 1957 sponsored by Mrs. Eugene C. Riders and commissioned on 15 September 1958 with Commander Shannon D. Cramer, Jr., in command. Mel Douyette of Cold War Submarines made this model of Swordfish in 1:192 scale. The hull is made of cast resin with aluminum masts. As delivered the model was mounted on a red oak base with a routed edge treatment, a name plate and a pair of dolphins (the insignia warn by qualified submarine sailors) to complete the display. I wanted to upgrade the model s presentation and add a cover to keep off the dust and grime. I didn t have a big slab of hardwood in my lumber stash that I wanted to use as a base for the case. Instead, I used two pieces of ½ inch Baltic birch plywood, one of the top of the other with the top one cut in from the edge of the bottom by the width of the acrylic cover thickness. I had some red gun strip wood obtained

from Lloyd Warner some time back. Four pieces were placed around the outside of the bottom of the base and then the top was planked with more strips of the red gum. The acrylic cover was custom made by our friends of PlexiDisplays in La Habra. The nameplate was done for me at Tustin Awards (closer to home for me than PlexiDisplays) laser etched on birch ply. I added hull dimensions and commissioning information to the info that Mel had placed on the original nameplate. To finish off the presentation I added the dolphins and a Swordfish challenge coin to the base. The only challenge with the whole process was that the red gum planking was relatively thin and the glue moisture caused some warping of the individual planks. Some of the red gum will be available at the next meeting for members. Lloyd only asks that proceeds from purchase go to the club. Essex Class Aircraft Carriers Sean Fallesen The Essex class was a class of aircraft carriers of the United States Navy that constituted the 20 th century s most numerous class of capital ships. The class consisted of 24 vessels, which came in short-hull and long-hull versions. Thirty-two ships were originally ordered, but as World War II wound down, six were cancelled before construction and two were cancelled after construction had begun. No Essex-class ships were lost to enemy action despite several vessels sustaining very heavy damage. The Essex-class carriers were the backbone of the U. S. Navy s combat strength during World War II from mid-1943 on, and, along with the addition of the three Midway-class carriers just after the war, continued to be the heart of U.S. naval strength until the supercarriers began to come into the fleet in numbers during the 1960 s and 1970 s. (Wikipedia). Sean is well in to building a collection of THE ENTIRE CLASS of Essex carriers. All carriers that were assigned hull numbers are included in the collection even if they were cancelled before being laid down. The group includes CV-9 through CV-21, CV-31 through CV-40, CV-45 through CV-47 and CV-50 through CV-55, for a total of 32 ships. Seven of the models are complete and 25 were on display. The models are all 1:700 scale and were built using injection molded plastic kits from Hasegawa, Dragon or Trumpeter. The decks will be populated with decaled 3D printed aircraft and the ships fitted with photo etch detailing. Each of the ships is being built to its most distinctive configuration. Numerous ship specific modifications and markings are in progress. All hulls were appropriate will receive dazzle paint jobs. USS Kearsarge (CV-33) will receive an angle deck conversion. Seven of the ships will be converted to 1950s to 1960s configuration. Sean is hoping to complete the entire group to show at the October IPMS National Convention in Phoenix this year. We did get a good tip regarding glue that Sean uses for attaching photo etch. The product is Gator s Grip Hobby Glue. There are several favorable reviews on line and it doesn t have some of the shortcomings of CA glues giving a quick grab plus some positioning time. The product is available from Gator Mask & More, and other hobby sites.

Battle Cruiser SMS Seydlitz David Okamura SMS Seydlitz was a 24,988 metric ton battlecruiser of the Imperial German Navy, built in Hamburg. She was ordered in 1910 and commissioned in May 1913, the fourth battlecruiser built for the High Seas Fleet. She was named after Friedrich Wilhelm von Seydlitz, a Prussian general during the reign of King Frederick the Great and the Seven Years War. Seydlitz represented the culmination of the first generation of German battlecruisers, which had started with the Von der Tann in 1906 and continued with the pair of Moltke-class battlecruisers ordered in 1907 and Seydlitz featured several incremental improvements over the preceding designs, including a redesigned propulsion system and an improved armor layout. The ship was also significantly larger than her predecessors she was approximately 3,000 metric tons heavier than the Moltke-class ships. Seydlitz was 656 ft. long at the waterline and 658 ft. overall. The ship had a beam of 93 ft., which was increased to 94 ft. with anti-torpedo nets equipped. She had a draft of 30 ft. forward and 29 ft. aft. Seydlitz displaced 24,593 long tons as designed and carrying a full load, the ship displaced 28,100 long tons. (Wikipedia). David brought in the start of his next project. There are two kits of the battlecruiser SMS Seydlitz. There is a Hobby Boss plastic kit of Seydlitz in 1:350 scale and another Model Kartonowy cardstock model kit in 1:200 scale. The paper cardstock kit will be used as a reference material to help in adding detail to the plastic kit version. Icebreaking Emergency Evacuation Vessel Burt Goldstein Petroleum exploitation companies operate a fleet of Ice Breaking Emergency Evacuation Vessels (IBEEV) on the Caspian Sea, to service the extensive oil fields there. The vessels are designed to evacuate up to 338 individuals per trip. They are designed to function using compressed air to power their engines, if they are passing through pools of burning oil, or oxygen poor environments carrying enough compressed air to function for 50 minutes. Every evacuee is issued a rebreather, for passing through anoxic environments, if the airtight evacuation capsules are compromised. The vessels are insulated so passengers and crew can survive transiting through pools of burning oil. Since the Caspian freezes during winter the vessels are designed to break up to 2.0 ft. of ice. AKAC INC. and Robert Allan Limited, a firm of Canadian naval architects, designed the vessels. Initially, in 2005, Romontowa built four vessels. By

2012 the fleet contained ten vessels. There are provisions to carry ten stretcher-bound, wounded evacuees, while the remaining 328 evacuees are seated in one of three evacuation capsules. Only two crewmembers are required to operate the vessels. (Wikipedia). Burt built this model of an IBEEV in cardstock from a JSC kit. The model is in 1:100 scale. Continental Frigate Hancock 1776 Henry Bikhazi The second Hancock was one of the first 13 frigates of the Continental Navy. A resolution of the Continental Congress of British North America 13 December 1775 authorized her construction; she was named for John Hancock. In her career, she served under the American, British and French flags. Her particulars are: Tons burthen: 763 bm, Length: 136 ft. 7 in.; keel 115 ft. 10 in.; Beam: 35 ft. 6 in.; Depth: 11 ft.; Complement: 290 officers and men: Armament: 24 X 12 pounder guns, 10 X 6-pounder guns. Hancock was built at Newburyport, Massachusetts, and placed under command of Captain John Manley 17 April After a long delay in fitting out and manning, she departed Boston, Massachusetts in company with Continental frigate Boston, 21 May On 29 May they captured a small brig loaded with cordage and duck. The next day they encountered a convoy of transports escorted by British 64-gun ship Somerset that set sail to close Hancock. Manley was saved by the clever and well-timed action of Boston, which forced Somerset to give up the chase by taking on the transports. After escaping from Somerset, the two frigates sailed to the northeast until 7 June when they engaged the Royal Navy s 28-gun fox, which tried to out sail her American enemies. Hancock gave chase and soon overhauled Fox, which lost her mainmast and suffered other severe damage in the ensuing battle. About an hour later, Boston joined the battle and compelled Fox to strike her colors. Hancock spent the next few days repairing the prize and then resumed cruising along the coast of New England. East of Cape Sale she took a British coal sloop that she towed until the next morning when the approach of a British squadron prompted Manley to set the coal sloop ablaze and leave her adrift. The British frigate HMS Flora recaptured Fox after a hot action. Boston became separated from Hancock, which tried to outsail her pursuers. Early in the morning of 8 July 1777 the British were within striking distance. HMS Rainbow began to score with her bowchasers and followed with a series if broadsides. Hancock was thus finally forced to strike her colors after a chase of some 39 hours. She had 239 men of her crew aboard, 50 some being on Fox. She also had Captain Fotheringham of Fox and 40 of his people on board. The rest of Fox s complement was on Boston and a couple of fishing vessels. Henry appears to be ready to continue work on his scratch built 1:96 scale model of the Hancock of The model was started five to six years ago. Wood used for hull framing is maple and pau marfim for exterior hull planking. Maple is used for the masts and

tops. All of the major hull work and deck furniture appear to be in place. Capstan, ships wheel, fife rails, bits and pin rails are in. Guns are in place. All three lower masts and their respective tops completed with a start on the topmasts. Rigging has just been started. Bowsprit gammoning and bobstays are in as is the anchor cable. Chains, channels and lower deadeyes are in. Next up appear to be lower shrouds and stays. HMS Victory Henry Bikhazi HMS Victory is a 104-gun first-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, ordered in 1758, laid down in 1759 and launched in She is best known for her role as Lord Nelson s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October She additionally served as Keppel s flagship at Ushant, Howe s flagship at Cape Spartel and Jervis s flagship at Cape St. Vincent. After 1824, she was relegated to the role of harbor ship. In 1922, she was moved to a dry dock at Portsmouth, England and preserved as a museum ship. She has been the flagship of the First Lord since October 2012 and is the world s oldest naval ship still in commission. Her particulars are: Displacement: 3,500 tons, tons burthen; 2,142 tons bm, Length: 186 ft. on gundeck, 227 ft. 6 in. (overall), Beam: 51 ft. 10 in., Draught: 28 ft. 9 in. (8.76 m), Depth of hold: 21 ft. 6 in., Propulsion: Sails 6,510 sq. yd., Sail plan: full-rigged ship, Speed: up to 11 knots maximum, Complement: approximately 850, Armament: at Trafalgar: Gundeck: 30 X 2.75 ton long pattern Bloomfield 32 pounders, Middle gundeck: 28 X 2.5 ton long 24 pounders, Upper gundeck: 30 X 1.7 ton short 12 pounders, Quarterdeck: 12 X 1.7 ton short 12 pounders, Forecastle: 2 X medium 12 pounders, 2X 68 pound carronades. Inspired by the works of miniaturist Lloyd McCaffery, Henry built this scratch model of HMS Victory in 1:136 scale. The hull is hand carved mahogany with maple masts and holly for the deck. Once the model is complete it will be mounted atop the clock stand made from burl wood. USS Constitution Paul Payne USS Constitution is a three-masted heavy frigate of the United States Navy, named by President George Washington after the Constitution of the United States of America. She is the world s oldest commissioned naval vessel still afloat. Constitution was launched in 1797, one of the six original frigates authorized for construction by the Naval Act of 1794 and the third constructed. Joshua Humphreys designed the frigates to be the young Navy s capital ships and so Constitution and her sisters were larger and more heavily armed and built than standard frigates of the period. Her particulars were: Tonnage: 1,576, Displacement: tons, Length: 207 ft. billet head to taffrail, 175 ft. at the waterline, Beam: 43 ft. s6 in., Height: mainmast: 220 ft., Draft: 21 ft.

forward, 23 ft. aft, Depth of hold: 14 ft. 3 in., Sail plan: 42,710 sq. ft. on three masts, Speed: 13 knots, Complement: 450 including 55 Marines and 30 boys, Armament: 30 X 24-pounder long guns, 20 X 32-pounder carronades, 2 X 24-pounder bow chasers. Paul is continuing construction of his scratch built 1:96 scale model of USS Constitution in her as-built configuration, ca Paul has been doing a lot of reworking of the spar deck, bulwarks, stern and head details to conform to the best available research of Constitution s appearance from launch to The main source has been Karl Marquardt s Anatomy of the ship monograph. A second source was a book written by William Bass titled The Constitution, Super Frigate of many Faces, a limited edition published in An additional research source is a painting by Michel Felice Cornè of Constitution c and the earliest known photograph of Constitution undergoing repairs at the Navy Yard, Portsmouth in After substantial reworking do to the additional information above the replanking of the spar deck is well underway. This is being done over a 1/64 aircraft ply subdeck. The headwork and stern configuration can then be completed. The gundeck armament is in place and currently there will be no gunport covers. A small repair was needed in the coppering of the hull. The repair plates were made from stained glass copper strip with detail added using a ponce wheel. Sovereign of the Seas - Rich Blumenthal Rich came to the SMA Meeting with this model to try and ascertain exactly what she was. Rich says the nameplate says Sovereign of the Seas but that doesn t seem right to him. Of the three Sovereigns listed in Wikipedia the closest seems to be the Donald McKay clipper of 1852 and even that one isn t close, since there are too many masts on his ship model with the wrong shape to the hull among other problems. The other two ships listed in Wikipedia were the 17 th century Royal Navy warship and a 1988 modern cruise ship. Anyway, there were a number of suggestions from those present that it seemed similar to some sail training ships such as the Amerigo Vespucci or the Gorch Fock, the similarities there seem to be pretty much related to the white hull with port holes. The largest problem seems to be with the four equal length masts crossed with too many yardarms. So the naming of the vessel seems to be an affectation and the conclusion reached must be that the model is meant to be a decorative one or something classified as folk art. Rich was happy to conclude that the model was a folk art model and did not actually represent any specific sailing ship.

Royal Barge circa 1700 Jon Sanford The Ship Modelers Association had a few guests at the January meeting three members of the San Diego Ship Modelers Guild. They were Jon Sanford, Ed Torrence and Guy Lawrie, who introduced themselves. I was a pleasure to have them attend our meeting, as your reporter and Don Dressel attend their meeting that are on the second Tuesday of each month. Jon Sanford, who happens to be the SDSMG Guild Master, gave a presentation of his modeling of the Royal Barge circa 1700, a model designed for master ship modelers by Chuck Passaro in ½ =1 foot scale. The SDSMG is conducting a community build effort with several of their members, who are all building this model. The kit is available from Syren Ship Models at Jon talked about his efforts with the model and the progress he is making. This kit is a plank on frame ship model kit of a Queen Anne style Royal Barge complete with everything you will need, made from all cherry wood and boxwood accents. Pedestals and sweep racks are also included with the kit along with a finely made flag. The instructions are available off the internet. A very excellent and strongly recommended kit model of those who wish to get started with scratch building. Catalan Ship NAO Bill Schultheis Bill brought in his model of the Nao but did not talk about it at the meeting due to the fact that there were so many models. It was there, however, and I thought it should be mentioned. I hope Bill talks about the model next month! It is a rather large and different model by Woody Joe at 1/30 scale.

Mayflower Group By Don Dressel Old Salts in Port: Steve Jones, John Bakker, Don Dressel, Tom Stellar, Guy Bell, Don Leyman. Ships in Port: HMS Pegasus, Derfflinger. Tools and Books: 17 th Century Dutch Merchant Ships by Ab Hoving, Seizing machine plus others. John Bakker started off the meeting with a brief discussion of his new Corel/Movo kit model of the Woppen Von Hamburg, which is a large ship-of-the-line probably constructed by the Dutch. He used the plans to cut out two stands for his model to start the kit, based on the drawings bulkhead #6 and #9, but then discovered that the cut outs were too small he forgot that the bulkheads will be planked, so the opening to form the cradle will be larger than the bulkhead. So, he has to widen the cutout by the dimensions of the double planking then it will fit the completed hull once planked. This should be easy for John to do, as he is an expert using the scroll saw. He also showed us the plans the model will be a LARGE model. John showed Guy Bell his Washington Galley that he was building and has lost interest in completing. Guy indicated he would like to have it and finish it, along with the plans that John purchased from the Nautical Research Guild. John gave him the hull of the model and the plans. Don Dressel was next up and began by showing the crew the new book that has been published by SeaWatchBooks, 17 th Century Dutch Merchant Ships by Ab Hoving. Since Don is working on the Art Am Fusta kit model of the Derfflinger (no longer available), a Dutch Fluit, this book was of particular importance and help, since Don had no complete plans of the masting and rigging. Included with the book is a portfolio of Dutch merchant ship plans, in several scales, of a number of Dutch merchant ships including the fluit. The crew showed a lot of interest in both the book and all the plans. Don then went on to discuss his progress on the masting and rigging of the Derfflinger. Since he showed the model at the recent SMA meeting last Wednesday, he has completed all the stays and only has the installation of the crow s-feet at the fore and main lower masts to complete the standing rigging. This led to a discussion of

the euphroe in relation to the crow s-feet and the purpose of same. Once the crow s-feet are completed, the standing rigging will be done and the running rigging can commence. Don plans to install sails on this ship that was also discussed. Steve brought in another tool that he had found while going to estate auction of tools and other things. He showed the tool to all the crew who were present at the meeting and there were several suggestions as to what it purpose was, but no one was completely sure. If anyone reading this newsletter can identify the tool, please let your editor know so he can pass the information along to the SMA members. The tool was made in England and may have something to do with knitting, leatherwork or sail work. John also talked about his work on the HMS Vanguard and his efforts to copper plate the lower hull. The copper plates supplied in the kit have to be cut into individual plates from the photo etch copper sheet. John has found that plain scissors seem to work very well in cutting out these plates. The type of glue used to install these copper plates onto the hull was also discussed, with several choices. It will be interesting to see just what John decides to do. Don Leyman then showed us the progress he is making on his scratch built Swan class model of the HMS Pegasus. He discussed serving the lines for the standing rigging, while also indicating that he would not mast and rig the ship beyond the lower mast caps. He showed us his serving machine (see photo) that he used to serve the lines as required. He also discussed the forth book in the Swan Class sloop series, which discusses rigging on the sloops that he has found very helpful. He also purchased additional rigging plans from the Swan Group. Burton pendant shrouds were discussed along with the use of matt medium to coat the served lines, the making of rings by cutting off 1/16 inch diameter rings from copper tubing and making the gussets on the rings using a hammer, then serving. The use of Elmer s clear glue was also discussed as a method of making sure clove hitches and servings do not come adrift on the model. The crew spent additional time closely looking at Don s model and the fine detail he is installing.
