WORK IN PROGRESS November 21, 2018 Reporter: Dave Yotter The regular November SMA meeting took place as usual with about 16 hearty ship modelers in attendance. It was a great meeting with nine models that members brought in to show and tell. Port Jackson Colonial Schooner John Bakker In September 1788, only 18 months after the founding of the new colony on the shores of Port Jackson now better known as Sydney Harbour, Governor Arthur Phillip sent a message to his superiors in England requesting two vessels of 30 or 40 tons to be sent out in frame, with a few shipwrights to put them together. Almost two years later (1790), after becoming a little inpatient, a request was again sent. The trip took 12 to 18 months. After considerable delay, drafts were prepared for a Schooner for Port Jackson. In July of 1791 a vessel was sent in frame and was named Francis. Francis was a 41 tons (bm) colonial schooner that was partially constructed at the Deptford Dockyard, England and sent in frame aboard the Pitt to Australia to be put together for the purposes of exploration. The vessel had originally been designed for George Vancouver s discovery voyage of the west coast of North America. No records available to show whether in fact Modelers Shipyards schooner was the Francis of it so what became of her, however, this model is in every way an accurate representation of an early Australian colonial schooner as constructed by the infant industry that emerged during the 15 years waiting for a completed response to Governor Arthur Phillip s original request. The original drafts are still in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, England and are the raw material on which the drawings and Modelers Shipyard kit of the Colonial Schooner Port Jackson are based. A drawing of the Mercury owned by Mary Reiby, an early Sydney merchant, appears on the Australian $20.00 currency note. The Mercury is identical to the Port Jackson Schooner. John s model of the schooner in 1:50 scale is well underway. The hull is completely planked up and including the wales and bulwarks. The bowsprit, catheads and bitts are 2

installed and the windlass is in place. Main cargo hatches are in as are the hatchways to the after cabin and a locker forward. The foremast has been set in place and the shrouds set up Cutter Henry Bikhazi Ships boats known as cutters have evolved over time but generally are among the smallest of a ships complement of boats. The cutter was clinker built and had a transom rather than a pointed stern. They were built in several different lengths, shorter than the pinnace but beamier and usually handling better under sail. It was most useful for handling a small number of men or for transporting stores when it was unnecessary to use the more commodious longboat. When cutters appeared, they had an additional wash strake to raise the freeboard while under sail. To prevent the oars from being raised too high for convenience while rowing, rowlocks were cut into the wash strakes and closed with plugs while the boat was under sail. This arrangement proved to have advantages over throle pins, which might work out. Henry s 18-foot cutter was built with the assistance of an Admiralty Models kit by Greg Herbert and David Antscherl in 1:48 scale. The kit consisted of a urethane plug which included keel and frame locations molded in to establish the basic shape of the hull. Once the frames and keel are in place than the planking can be put on. After framing and planking the hull is freed from the building jig, the railings and interior furniture; benches, thwarts, rising and such can be completed. One of the features of clinker-built planking is that the partial overlap of planks toward the center of the craft blend into a smooth carvel like appearance at the stem and stern of the boat. Materials used are boxwood and holly. Hobby Bench Organizer Henry Bikhazi Henry has fashioned a bench organizer for tools that includes spools for rigging line, a place for drill bits and burrs, partitions and cubbies for other tools and materials. It has three drawers for parts storage. The organizer is nicely constructed from poplar and features a deployable strut on the back that allows it to be tilted back for easier access when working with a rigging line spools. Henry said he got the idea from a picture in a Micro-Mark catalog and thinks her improved on it. 3

14-Foot Fishing Dory Dave Yotter The Banks dory, as used on fishing schooners in the North Atlantic, emerged as an identifiable type in the mid 19 th century. The distinctive shape evolved from the need for compact storage on the deck of a schooner and stability under a heavy load in a heaving seaway. When loaded, 1 or 2 good men easily handled the dory but for the novice they could be treacherous. The dory needed to be cheap and easy to build. Most would last only one season of hard work. A schooner would normally have an inventory of 12 to 18 of these boats, and at a cost of about $ each, they would represent a major expense in outfitting for a season. A single set for codfish would include several tubs of baited trawl, two anchors, a buoy line and kegs to mark either end of the set. The black ball was used to help find the set after the fish had taken the bait. Oars were the main propulsion but a mast and sail were sometimes put in for use in fair weather. Other equipment needed for a day s fishing might include a lunch pail, a water cask, oilskins, a bailer, a bow wheel and hand clips to help haul heavy trawl lines. A heavy club, the gob stick, was used to quickly dispatch fish who were unphilosophical about being abruptly yanked from the sea. The model is scratch built to a scale of 1:16 (3/4 =1 ). The woods used include beech and lemon (degame) representing the oak and pine construction of the original. The planks are properly shaped, using the distinctive dory-lap construction method. In this method the lap-streak construction in the center of the boat gives way to smooth planking near the ends. Planks are clench nailed together using brass wire. Metal work is shaped and painted brass. Line tubs and kegs are individually staved using holly and then hooped in wood or metal as appropriate. The lifting grommets are of linen line with Matthew Walker stopper knots. I got the inspiration for the case due to my wife s involvement in the leaded glass hobby. Lots of colored glass and the tools were available so it worked out nicely. The model was completed in La Real Don Dressel La Real, built in Barcelona at the Royal Shipyard, was the flagship of Don Juan de Austria during the battle of Lepanto in The Battle of Lepanto was the largest battle between galleys in history, in which a Christian fleet of the Holly League defeated an 4

Ottoman fleet under Admiral Ali Pasha. In 1971, a replica of La Real was built and displayed in the Museu Martim in Barcelona. Don is continuing his efforts to build this model based on a kit by Dusak in 1:75 scale. The kit is more difficult than your normal wooden ship model kit in that the terminology used in galley construction is totally different. Don at first had problems with a twist that developed in the hull after the first layer of planking was completed, but this twist has now been removed. Work on installation of the stem, keel, and stern post (ship terminology) has been completed along with the addition of the wales (again, ship terminology) prior to commencement of the second layer of planking. A lot of plank bending is required, particularly at the stern of the vessel. This has proved to be very difficult using the material supplied in the kit and Don has substituted some of his own wood to accomplish the bending of the wales. The wood is first soaked in hot water, then bent using an iron of approximate dimensions to the bend. The plank is then secured to the hull until the wood is completely dry, at which point it is cemented to the first layer of planking using Titebond II premium wood glue. Lots of sanding and cleaning up is also involved. Once all the wales are installed, and then the second layer of planking of the hull will be completed. Once the basic hull is completely planked, Don thinks he will have to paint the model at this stage, as the hull itself is red with the lower hull being white. This being the case, the hull will have to be sealed first, then painted the appropriate color. Don will try using Testor s Model Master Enamel based on an article in the Model Shipwrights Newsletter The Forecastle Report, Nov Also attached is a photo of the plans supplied with the kit that show the difficult stern planking required to the left. Part 60a and 60b is the wale installation, while part 61c is the second layer of planking. Don also brought in two books on ship models that he shared with the group. They are Navy Board Ship Models by Nick Ball & Simon Stephens, available from the Naval Institute Press and The Rogers Collection of Dockyard Models At the U.S. Naval Academy Museum, Third Rates, Vol. II by Grant H. Walker available from Sea Watch Books (see review of the latter in this newsletter). Rescue and Restoration Hank Tober Hank brought in three rescued boats that he is working on. He likes looking for ads such as old boat for sale. The first model was a Bluenose model that looked like someone carefully made it. He had a rather interesting story about driving to South LA to purchase 5

the model, negotiating a hard-nosed lower price, $20.00 to $13.00 and then to $ He discovered that some of the folks there were really not interested in giving up the model. He did prevail however and restored the model that was also covered in white paint. In the process of cleaning the model, Hank discovered the Bluenose name on the transom. He is now planning to give the model back to the owner. Hank is sure that will be a complete and fun surprise. Boat No. 2 was purchased from a Dutch family in Michigan for $ The daughter has had the model, a sloop, in a box for 24 years and decided to get rid of it. It was sanded to bare wood and then repainted. Model No. 3 was advertised for $10.00 and bought for $9.00. Because of its condition it was rather hard to figure out and the conclusion was that it was a three masted schooner. It has since been cleaned and re-masted. Pictures of all three of these models can be seen in the Members Models section of this newsletter. HMS Bellona 1760 Chris Carl HMS Bellona was a 74-gun Bellonaclass third-rate ship-of-the-line of the Royal Navy. Designed by Sir Thomas Slade, she was a prototype for the iconic 74-gun ships of the latter part of the 18 th century. Her particulars were: Tons burthen: 1615 bm; Length: 168 ft. on the gundeck and 138 ft. keel; Beam: 47 ft.; Draught: 21 ft.; Depth of hold: 20 ft.; Complement: 650 officers and men; Armament: Lower gundeck: 28 X 32 pounders; Upper Deck: 28 X 18 pounders; QD: 14 X 9 pounders; Fc: 4 X 9 pounders. Chris continues making progress on the HMS Bellona built from a plank on bulkhead Corel kit in 1:100 scale. The final layer of planking is complete and has received its final coat of finish. Teak oil was used on the walnut portions of the hull and shellac sealer, which will keep the lighter color. All decks are planked using shellacked Tanganyika wood. All deck furniture has been completed including the belfry, skylight, ladders and the stack for the galley stove. Fixtures and decorations around the bow are in progress. Chris is working from three sets of plans and thinks that about 80% of the time is spent on problem solving and the other 20% is actual building. 6

Mayflower Group By Don Dressel Old Salts in Port: Steve Jones, John Bakker, Guy Bell, Tom Steller, Dave Okamura and Don Dressel. Ships in Port: La Real, Schooner for Port Jackson, Vasa, ship stamps and Eldon Racing Sloop. John Bakker started off the meeting with a brief discussion of some certificates he found in his garage while cleaning up. One was am award from the SMA for excellence in ship modeling and the other was a painting of him done by Jack Moffitt, a past member of the SMA. He also had a few items to give away on his table outside on his patio, consisting of a couple of tool boxes, some miscellaneous ship model parts and pieces, and some mahogany venire. So, in addition to the usual coffee and cookies, at times there are other items offered for members of the SMA who attend the Mayflower Group meetings. Dave Okamura was next with a presentation of his Eldon Racing Sloop, which Dave received in Dave indicated that it was supposed to float, but he did not think it would sail very well. The instructions for sailing the sloop are on the bottom of the stand for the model (see photo). The weight or ballast for the model were simply supplied by immersing the model in water until it filled up with the proper amount of water to float on an even keel. Dave also indicated that he had kept the model for many years and just brought it in as an example of what was offered years ago. Dave did not remember the original cost of the model and has no idea what it may be worth today. Of course, the rubber band (3 ) attached to the tiller has long since fallen apart but the instructions do tell you how to replace the rubber band. I do not think Dave has any idea as to if the model will still sail today or not (or if it ever did), but maybe it would. John was encouraged by the group to bring his new kit model of the Sergal Vasa box to show. He was showing the plans of the ship, which he was already investigating prior to starting work on the model. He now has another LARGE ship model to build. It probably will not be rigged, as the scale is BIG. He did say that all the parts were laser cut (very well done) and all the fittings were 9

individually wrapped and identified, but he has to complete the Schooner from Port Jackson first, which he is going to rig! The material supplied in the kit appeared to be very good with lots of brass fittings. But Don indicated that all the figures should be painted, according to the Vasa Maritime Museum and staff, and the bulkheads, which are depicted as blue, should actually be painted red. John had a lot more to say about the kit plans and indicated he is also obtaining information from the Internet and observing other modelers construction methods. Don Dressel next discussed his current progress on the Spanish galley La Real and the difficulty he is having bending the wale around the stern of the ship. The walnut material supplied in the kit will not bend to that sharp a bend, so Don is thinking about substituting another wood such as pear or boxwood to make the bend. Steve and John offered several other suggestions as to how to proceed with the bending of the wood to conform to the required shape. You can see the piece of walnut that Don tried to bend in the photo. At least the twist has been taken out of the model. Once the wale is finally installed, then the planking of the second layer will commence. Painting of the model once the planking is completed will probably be the next step prior to installing all the benches, etc. Don also talked about his next project, which is the French La Couronne. A lot of research is currently taking place. John also talked briefly about his Schooner for Port Jackson that is also discussed in the Works in Progress above. His rigging of the model is progressing and the group in explaining the rigging to John offered a lot of additional help. The hull has been completed in one month, since John just obtained the model from the SMA auction last month! He said he is have a lot of fun with this little schooner. Don offered some additional help by supplying John with a book on rigging fore and aft schooners. Steve helped identify some of the rigging parts that perhaps John did not fully understand. The plans supplied with the kit were very good and seemed to be complete. John also indicated that the real ship was send in pieces from England after a very long delay time. As an added thought, Port Jackson in Australia is now known as Sydney Harbor. 10

The next presenter was Guy Bell, who brought in a sample of his large collection of ship stamps, which is another related hobby for him and his better half. He does only collect the stamps that represent SAILING ships, however. I hope the larger picture of the stamps helps to visualize his collection. As usual, a fun and relaxing Mayflower Group meeting at John s house on a nice Su nday afternoon. 11

The Rogers Collection of Dockyard Models At the U.S. Naval Academy Museum Third Rates Volume II By Grant H. Walker SeaWatchBooks, LLC 19 Sea Watch Place, Florence, Oregon Large 10 X format, 299 pages, Hardcover & Dust Jacket Over 800 color photos, 80lb Gloss Paper ISBN # This is the second volume of the fabulous color photos and descriptions of the Dockyard Ship Models purchased by Colonel Rogers and donated to the U.S. Naval Academy Museum. It is the largest collection of Dockyard Models outside of England. The book features the entire collection of third-rate ships that were the mainstay of the battle line during the 17 th and 18 th centuries. This book goes through very detailed descriptions of 10 third-rate Dockyard Models in great detail, showing each model with many pictures (including interior shots with endoscopy), detailed descriptions of what happened to the model including any changes made to the model. This includes X-rays, fiber optic endoscopes, and CT scanners for all the models, in many cases having great descriptions of what is going on with the model and the discoveries made concerning these models. It also shows the detail that was achieved by the modelers who originally built the models. There is also one Spanish Dockyard model El Terrible. Apparently, there will be a third volume covering the forth-rate models in the collection, to be published in a future date. This book is strongly recommended for all lovers of ship models and historians and is, in my opinion, a must have book. The first model discussed is model No. 107 in the collection, built to 1:48 scale. It is an unidentified English third-rate of guns built in A complete description of the model, what was done to it, its design history, changes made to the model by Henry Culver along with comments by R.C. Anderson and others on these changes along with many detail photos and explanations make this a fascinating read. The inclusion of X-shaped pointers would make a fine subject to study and are a rare item included with this model. The model is very rare in that there is only a few model built that apparently came from the Cromwell period. As with many of these 12

models, there were changes made to the model over the period of time it was in existence, but many items on the model are thought to be original. Evidently, Henry Culver was not the first one to modify the model. The next model to be written about is Model No. 32 the English third-rate ship Grafton, 70 (1679), to 1:48 scale. Once again, Colonel Rogers purchased it. It was obtained originally in poor condition with no masting or rigging. Again, much to the distress of Dr. Anderson, Henry Culver repaired the model and installed all the masting and rigging. A history is presented of the original ship along with the model s provenance. King Charles II was heavily involved in the design of these ships with results explained in the text. Henry Culver evidently used gold colored silk thread for the standing rigging and much of the running rigging. Original photos of the model when purchased by Colonel Rogers are shown as well as photographs of the hold in the model. Many of the photos show great detail on rigging for model builders. The third Dockyard Model presented is model No. 8, an English thirdrate 80-gun ship of the early 1690 s associated with the Sussex of 1693 in 1:48 scale. Once again, the history of the 80-gun ship and the Sussex are recounted along with many details of the actual model itself. The discovery of the remains of the Sussex was discovered in A complete physical description of the hull and its many details are revealed concerning this Dockyard model, but no masting or rigging was done. The photos of the interior of the model show many details otherwise not visible. Model No. 7, an unidentified English third-rate 70-gun ship circa 1802/1707 in 1:56 scale, is detailed again with complete descriptions of the real ships as well as the model itself. Apparently, this model had launching flags, which were discovered in 2009 and added to the model in January of 2013 after much research. Despite the controversy concerning the launching flags 13

and other items, Grant indicates, even if it weren t fitted with the worlds oldest working example of a ships wheel, it would still be treasured as one of the loveliest and most important English Navy Board models in Colonel Roger s fleet. The book goes on to describe 6 more Dockyard Models, the last of which is a rare Spanish third-rate ship, possibly El Terrible of 1754 in 1:48 scale. This last model was built in Spain and purchased by Colonel Rogers agent and came from the collection of Max Williams, New York City s leading dealer of marine antiques in The other 5 Dockyard Models are all British, Model No. 88 being the British thirdrate Prince Frederick in 1:48; model No. 34 the third-rate 70-gun ship c. 1715, possibly the Monmouth of 1718 in 1:48 scale (this is the take-apart model shown on the cover of the book); model No. 54 an unidentified British third-rate 70-gun ship, c in 1:48 scale; Model No. 45, the British third-rate 74-gun Canada of 1765 as she appeared at her first commissioning in :48 scale; and Model No. 28, a British third-rate 74-gun ship c in 1:48 scale. There are MANY interior photos of many of the ships, which cannot be seen normally when you visit the United States Naval Academy Museum to see these models. Some of the work in the interior of these models is exceptional. A good example is the iron stove Iron stoves like the one on this model had largely replaced traditional brick firehearths by the 1750 s. This is one example of interior shots shown in the book on many if not all of the models. In addition, some of the models have been taken apart to show other detail. X-rays were also used on some of the models to try and identify how models were assembled and answer questions that had not even been asked before the X-ray. A sample: X-rays answered the questions about the nature of the model s chain pumps. At the same time, they revealed the presence of a number of other curious features lying hidden below the lower deck that were very hard to explain. In particular, what was the large half-moonshaped object shown in profile directly beneath the pumps, and what purpose did the screws inserted into it serve? (See photo). All in all, a VERY HIGHYLY recommended book for all ship modelers and enthusiasts who are interested in naval dockyard models and the fine craftsmanship and skill of the modelers in the 17 th and 18 th centuries. 14

Channel Island Maritime Museum Visit Don Dressel The trip to the Channel Island Maritime Museum by members of the SMA was a very successful event. Those who went had a great time and saw a lot of great ship models as well as ship paintings. The museum (CIMM) features ship models by one of the Ship Modelers Associations past members, Ed Marple. Larry Van Es writes: We met at the Red Cross Building at 7:30 and had coffee and donuts. The bus arrived at 7:15 and we began loading. The bus departed at 8:00. On the way there we watched the movie Master and Commanders. We arrived at 10:00 and were met by Bill Conroy. The members were divided up into several smaller groups and given a tour of the museum. We broke for lunch at 11:30 and then returned to the museum to view the exhibits on our own. The bus departed at 1:00 and we watched the movie Moby Dick on the return trip. For those that didn t wish to watch the movie I provided some reading material. Everyone seemed to have a great time. Shown below are a few of the photos taken by Larry Van Es and Jim Shuttleworth, who were nice enough to send me both the photos and the write-up above. There are a few more photos of the CIMM trip on next page. 15

Ship Model Conference in Rochefort, France Reported by Don Dressel The International Convention of Model Shipbuilding was held in Rochefort, France on the 18 th through the 21 st of October According to the advertisement, the idea was to select and gather around one hundred quality model shipbuilders coming from all over the world. Invited by the city of Rochefort, this convention was held in the Convention Hall, facing the gate of the Sun the main entrance to the Naval Dockyard. The exhibition was open to the public. The Conference was an opportunity to introduce model shipbuilding, a hobby shared among many people around the world who did share their knowledge and show their work to visitors. There were a number of programs conducted during the event. Members of the SMA who attended the conference were Doug Tolbert, Dave Yotter, and Paul Payne and his wife. Magnus and Byrne McLeod accompanied them from England. Your editor was unable to attend due to health reasons. Also a group of ROPE members from Tokyo, Japan were in attendance including Mr. Tanaka. There is a photo of Mr. Tanaka along with Michel Mantins friend Jean-Claude Noailly and his wife Monica, the later bringing Michels models shown below to the conference since Michel was unable to attend (Michel is the only honorary member of the SMA from France). There were also In addition to the conference itself, there were many things to see and do, as there was also a maritime museum (part of the AAMM, a major maritime museum), the dockyard itself, the French frigate Hermione reproduction which sailed with La Fayette on board during the American War of Independence, a double dry dock, built sideways to the Charente River to make ship operations easier. Two ships could use the dry dock simultaneously with a lock between the docks and a ropewalk factory. Louis XIV and Colbert, his main minister, decided the construction of this splendid building. Construction of the ropewalk lasted from 1666 to Nowadays, the building houses an important nautical bookshop. See photos below. 17

Although Dave took a lot of photos of the models at the event, many of them involving submarines, I have since discovered that there is a full set of photos available on the Internet at If you access this web site, you can see all the models that were at the conference. Needless to say, I missed a very fine ship model conference, as did all who were unable to attend. A few photos are shown below. Dioramas and unusual craft were also on exhibit. 18
