IN THE BEGINNING When in 1998 John and Caroline Charnley set out to find their perfect blue-water cruising yacht, it was with a clear vision in mind.

4 IN THE BEGINNING When in 1998 John and Caroline Charnley set out to find their perfect blue-water cruising yacht, it was with a clear vision in mind. They wanted a yacht that could take them anywhere they chose in safety and comfort and, crucially, without the need for additional crew. She also had to have a sparkling performance, looks to be proud of and be a home-from-home. A yacht with plenty of light and a great feeling of space where friends and family could be entertained in style. Known for his pragmatic, seaman-like approach to sailing, John Charnley brought a wealth of experience to the project. As a veteran of the singlehanded transatlantic and other long-distant races, the founder of the Sunsail charter company and a former airline pilot, John has a keen attention to detail. He brought together a talented team of a top naval architect and interior designer, engineers, management and highly skilled craftsmen. The ideal blue-water cruiser - the first Discovery sailing yacht - was born. DISCOVERY THE START OF SOMETHING AMAZING The wind picked up to 22 knots but the wind-against-tide lumpiness didn t worry the Discovery. She merely dug her heels in and sliced through the chop at near hull speed despite being hard on the wind. Her high ballast ratio, low bulb keel and large semibalanced rudder kept her tracking like the Paris express, but all the time her motion through oncoming waves was commanding. She exuded a feeling of quiet confidence a sensation that she would happily eat up the miles, regardless of sea state, while keeping her crew calm and more than comfortable. We try to follow the keep it simple principle, with all systems laid out for ease of use and accessibility. There is a walk-in engine room on our 50ft plus yachts. We use only the finest materials, best equipment and well-known products from leading manufacturers. In vital areas there are dual systems to ensure maximum reliability and flexibility. Take power systems for instance: there are two separate sources of 12 volts for engine and generator start, two sources of 24 volt supply and two of 240 volt: all designed for the demands of live-aboard cruising. We use premium quality circuit breakers to protect your yacht systems. Multiply this attention to detail throughout the entire design and construction and the picture builds: quality, reliability and safety. All of this means that you can enjoy your cruising with real peace of mind. 10 HULL CONSTRUCTION The Discovery hull has a composite construction for superior strength, yet still with a lightness to give performance. We have teamed up with the world s leading yacht structural engineers, SP-High Modulus (Gurit) and each hull is built to Category A Ocean standard to conform with CE certification. Having a Divinycell polymer structural foam core to the hull allows it to absorb energy. The foam also provides a good level of acoustic and thermal insulation easily coping with the heat of the tropics or cold of higher latitudes. Using the vinylester resin gives added strength, as does a layer of Kevlar forward. With polymer foam, superior quality resin throughout, and non-pigmented gel below the waterline, there is a five-year guarantee against osmosis. Two sealed watertight bulkheads forward deliver buoyancy and safety. Hull colour is gelled into the boat, rather than just painted on the surface thus it has high durability, with two coats of epoxy below the waterline providing additional protection. Standard is white, with blue boot top and caveta line, with other colour options available. Two coats of anti-foul are standard. CUTTING THROUGH THE WAVES Ron Holland did a wonderful job with the design. My wife has never felt more secure than when she is on the yacht. Discovery 55 Owner DECK CONSTRUCTION As with the hull we construct the deck for strength and lightness, plus good insulation. All load-bearing areas have marine-ply core and stainless steel or aluminium backing plates. The deck is joined to the hull with both cohesive structural bonding and stainless steel bolts, with further strength and stiffness added by laminating all structural bulkheads to hull and deck with toughened epoxy adhesive. The teak for decks and cockpit are epoxy-bonded and vacuumed down, so no screw heads to worry about. KEEL We believe that a key element to a comfortable sailing motion and one without drama is to have a high ballast ratio a lot of keel weight in relation to the boat weight. The highest ratio (Discovery 55) is 42%, which gives fantastic stability and comfort. Having said that, it is not all about the weight shape is important for performance too. Our keels, whether standard or the shoal option, have an efficient hydrodynamic profile, with a bulb that creates an end-plate effect that enhances the lift of the keel. The designed length of the keel gives good lateral stability, yet allows the boat to turn in its own length great for manoeuvring in tight spaces RUDDER(S) Semi-balanced to provide light yet positive steering. Oversized for full control in all conditions, engineered for robustness, the rudder has Kevlar reinforcing and is moulded around a metal (stainless or aluminium) shaft and rudder frame. The saloon is raised with panoramic windows and it is unique in that standing or sitting you can have a full view of your surroundings no standing on tip-toes to see out, just relax and enjoy. The interior is bathed in light throughout, with great ventilation from the many opening hatches that scoop in the air. We make it bespoke to you, not only with a choice of cherry, maple or light oak wood, but also an array of options when it comes to inlay, burr and bird s eye wood, plus the use of contrasting woods that will make your yacht very special. Apart from looking spectacular, a yacht interior has to be robust, have holds in the right places and have no sharp corners. That is why we have up to eight colour coats of lacquer on all joinery surfaces, easy to grip fiddle rails and laminated curves to the joinery where needed. When you are on a yacht you still want home-from-home luxury. You deserve a good night s sleep. We are very fussy about giving you a really comfortable, breathable mattress and have spent time designing just the right product. All the berths, including pilot berth, are fitted with lee cloths. The galley is so easy to work whether at sea or at anchor. The fridge and freezer are fantastic front opening, enormous and with chunky insulation, keel-cooled condensers for efficiency so not a big drain on the batteries. The inboard side of the galley is dedicated to all things wet, with large and small sinks and a deep drainer. Stowage is plentiful. There are night-lights throughout the boat and overhead hatches have a shade-mosquito screen.
