11 BLUEWATER CATAMARANS History Towards the end of the 90s John and Caroline Charnley set out to find their perfect blue-water cruising yacht with a clear vision in mind. They wanted a yacht that could safely take them anywhere in the world, in comfort, a yacht they could sail themselves without the need for additional crew. High performance, great looks and a practical home-from-home, she needed to have plenty of light and a feeling of space where friends and family could be entertained in style. Known for his pragmatic, seaman-like approach to sailing, John Charnley brought a wealth of experience to the project. As a veteran of the single-handed transatlantic and other long-distant races, the founder of the Sunsail charter company and a former airline pilot, John has eagle-eyed attention to detail. To achieve his ambition, he brought together a talented team, which included a top naval architect, an interior designer, engineers, management and highly skilled craftsmen. Together they created the ideal blue-water cruiser - the first Discovery. A decade later, John and Caroline had the ambition of sailing across the Atlantic and up the Eastern Seaboard of the USA aboard a different kind of yacht a catamaran. The new yacht would have the same luxury as the monohulls they had created, in a spacious and stable package. They also wanted to explore The Bahamas up close. They enlisted the talents of designer Bill Dixon and the Discovery 50 catamaran was launched to worldwide acclaim. When John and Caroline retired in 2017, a new company Discovery Yachts Group was formed. Bringing Discovery Yachts and Southerly Yachts under one roof, the company created a third brand - Bluewater Yachts for its luxury multihull product line. A new luxury catamaran, the Bluewater 50, was unveiled as the first design to underpin the new brand. The BW50 is a refinement of the Discovery 50 with many new features earning it the Best Multihull award during her World Premiere at the Southampton Boat Show 2018 from Sailing Today. 13 BLUEWATER CATAMARANS Design T he new Bluewater 50 catamaran is an exciting design by highly-acclaimed naval architect, Bill Dixon. The moment you step aboard into the central aft cockpit, you will notice the perfect seating/entertaining area with direct access to the galley and saloon, flanked by two sculpted sunbeds. An additional forward facing cockpit offers an alternate location for sundowners. From here, there is excellent 180-degree visibility, ideal for wild-life spotting or simply watching the world go by. Adjacent to this is the famous Discovery bow spa. The generous saloon has a sumptuous dining area abeam of a forward-facing navigation station. A fabulous galley area aft is equipped to a very high specification. The deep windows forward flow into the expansive glass to the sides and cockpit, giving exceptional panoramic views. The grand owner s suite occupies the entire port hull with the starboard hull hosting fore and aft private suites for guests. The Bluewater 50 comes complete with an overlapping furling genoa, a furling self-tacking jib and in-mast reefing main (vertically battened). All lines lead aft to push-button winches making it delightfully easy to sail with great performance.
