While my last boat, a Bertram 28, was a petrol powered, I have always enjoyed sailing and both my sons sail at our local club. When we decided to sell the Bertram I was considering a sailing catamaran for the space and also the economy, as running costs on my Bertram were quite high. The budget wasn t the main factor it was more about finding something that would suit my family s needs. We use our boat every week, cruising to different locations in Sydney Harbour, having lunch and enjoying the weather. We also like to spend occasional nights aboard and enjoy going up the coast to Pittwater and beyond. What boats did you consider? Other than the Greenline I looked at production catamarans like Fontaine Pajot, Lagoon and the many local builders. Why did you choose the one you did? When my wife Joanne saw the Greenline 33 at the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show for the first time she loved it. The location of the galley at the back of the saloon makes it great for entertaining. My wife and I were amazed at how much space it has for a 33ft boat and I was sold on its retro yet modern looks, superb styling and the hybrid technology. I was also impressed with its value-for-money purchase price. What was the deal? Absolutely, we have three children and lots of family and friends and Allegra is a true entertainer s boat. I m Italian and my wife loves to cook big meals so the Greenline fits our lifestyle perfectly. We ve been pleasantly surprised by the amount of admirers you get when behind the wheel of the Greenline. It s not an important factor in the great scheme of things but it does give us a little buzz. That said, it s common for other boaters to pass extra close for a look, which was a little disconcerting at first, but we re used to it now. Using the boat inside the harbour, we tend to run at hybrid speeds, using the boat s electric motor and utilising the solar panels to top up the boat s batteries when at rest. Basically we just use the VW engine as a generator. When we have pushed out to sea the boat has handled well. We had it in a 2m to 3m swell and it exceeded my expectations and ploughed John and Joanne head to the boat after work, and cruise around the quieter corners of Sydney Harbour through the waves easily. The steering is relaxed and doesn t roll as much as some of our past boats, and there is none of the slamming you get with a planning hull. We are also happy with how well ventilated the boat is on those 30 C+ days. With the extra opening window she remains comfortable even in the most oppressive heat.
