18 THE CREW: Aung Tin Oo (ATO) is Dallinghoos man on the line. After spending 5-years aboard other classic schooners in Europe and Asia as bosun and chief mate, he signed on to rebuild Dallinghoo from the ground up. Anything splicing, rigging or sailing ATO is hands on. Dominic. The man who only needs one name! This proud husband and father of two, has also been with Dallinghoo since her rebuild and knows every nook and cranny aboard her. When it comes to polishing the brass, helping in the galley, or serving an evening cocktail, Dom works hard to make sure each guest has exactly what he or she needs to be comfortable aboard. Kristy is the Galley Gal. She is passionate about new flavours, tastes and culinary creations. Kristy has literally crossed oceans in search of new gastronomic delights and has a keen talent for creating Asian and Western fusion cuisine. Kristy was raised as a boat kid aboard her parent s schooner and has experience in food and beverage management, yachting and marine tourism and outdoor recreation. Kristy was also just given he title of Salty Sailor Mega Babe by a popular sailing channel true story! Captain Michael, or Dr O as his students call him. Along with a Yachtmaster offshore certification, Michael holds a PhD in marine ecology and neuroscience. He has a lifetime of knowledge about the sea from pursuing his passions of scientific exploration and remote expedition leadership. Ask him anything about the ocean, above or below really!

22 Location and Schedules Schooner Dallinghoo is based all year round in South East Asia and is available to charter almost anywhere in the region from the Indian Andaman Islands in the west to the Pacific in the east. However there are a couple of issues to bear in mind, firstly the weather and secondly the immense distances that this area covers. The region is dominated by two main weather patterns; the North East Monsoon from November through to April and the South West Monsoon from May to October. The start and the end of these monsoon period is called the transition period and the with can be varied during these. During the NE monsoon Schooner Dallinghoo will be based in the Andaman Sea and we will be offering charters from Langkawi (Malaysia) in the south and up through the Thai Islands and onto Burma (Myanmar) and charters around the Mergui Archipelago. Further to the west are the Andaman islands and these are only a two day sail from Phuket in Thailand and can easily be reached. The weather during this period is generally calm with an afternoon breeze of around a force 4 and is always very dry with only the rare light shower. By April the NE Monsoon has died away and the winds and seas start to pick up from the SW and by late May these are quite strong and bringing with them heavy monsoon rain making the Andaman Sea unpleasant. Schooner Dallinghoo now moves around into the South China Sea, here the winds are light and are off shore making the sea calm, the rain that the SW monsoon brings has already fallen on the west coast and the east coast of the peninsular is experiencing it s dry season. From here we can sail from the Malaysian East Coast Islands, around North Borneo and in the Philippines, with planning and some relocating we can venture further east through to Papua New Guinea.

HISTORY OF Dallinghoo Dallinghoo is a small rural village in the county of Suffolk in the UK and is the birth place of Captain Francis Light in 1740.

23 HISTORY OF Dallinghoo Dallinghoo is a small rural village in the county of Suffolk in the UK and is the birth place of Captain Francis Light in Light served as a Royal Navy midshipman from 1759 to 1763, but went out to seek his fortune in the colonies. Joining the East India Company out of Calcutta and from 1765, he worked as a private country trader, a Captain on a trading vessel sailing through South East Asia, the same waters as Schooner Dallinghoo does today. For about ten years he had his headquarters in Thalang on the island of Jungceylon now Phuket, Thailand, reviving a failed French trading post. While living there he learned to speak and write several languages, including Malay and Siamese. In 1785, he warned the Thais on Phuket Island of an imminent Burmese attack. Light's warning enabled the islanders to prepare for Phuket's defence and subsequently repel the Burmese invasion; a monument now stands in the center of the island to this historic defence but not to Captain Light s contribution. He had personal friendships with the King of Siam and the Sultan of Kedah and it was through this latter friendship that he was able to lease the island of Penang for the British East India Company in 1786 and then in 1791, Penang became a British Crown Colony. The island was renamed the Prince of Wales Island and the capital was named Georgetown after King George III a name that remains today. This multicultural colony became extraordinarily successful from its inception and Captain Light served as the Superintendent of the colony until his death in Though little is now remembered of Captain Francis Light in the UK, in Malaysia and particularly Penang he is a house hold name, with many parts of the city named after him. His family home, Suffolk House is now a museum and open to the public.
