HMB Endeavour virtual tour transcript The following document contains the transcript of all audio recordings found in this resource. HMB Endeavour Introduction CLIP 0.1 Welcome aboard HMB Endeavour. I m Jonathan Munkhouse, one of the 94 crew under the Command of 1st Lieutenant James Cook. As a midshipman, my duties include working the sails, learning how to navigate and keeping the watch (that s keeping a lookout). We re away for three years and I have proudly been at sea since I was 13. I don t know what we will find this voyage, but it will be exciting! Station One The Foredeck CLIP 1.1 Here s the foredeck, or front part of the ship, watch out for the sticky tar! It keeps the ropes from rotting and the deck planks waterproof. You can also use it in your hair to keep out the head-lice it smells dreadful but you get used to it. Gallery One CLIP 1.2 There are three masts on this ship and we work the sails by pulling on those ropes. It is called rigging and there are ten miles of rope up there and 750 wooden blocks. On this ship it s a lot of work to learn the ropes. CLIP 1.3 Do you know how many anchors we have on this ship? Four! We use different ones depending on the tide and currents in the sea. CLIP 1.4 The anchors are raised and let go by the catheads and pulled up using the windlass, a horizontal winch turned manually by long wooden bars. You need three men to turn the winch. CLIP 1.5 This is the ship s bell. A ship s day starts at 12 noon and ends at 12 noon the next day. We tell the time by ringing the bell a certain number of times. The bell also tells me when it is my time to go on watch. 1 of 6

CLIP 1.6 Now that is the seat of ease. That s the toilet. No, we don t have a door. See that rope well that s what you use to wipe; just dip it in the salt water after each use. Station Two The Fireheath CLIP 2.1 Here we are in the galley, one of the most important parts of the ship. Lt Cook wants to keep us healthy, so food is important. Mr Thompson our cook is from Scotland. Along with his mates who assist him, he prepares a hot breakfast and midday dinner for 94 people. That s everyday, which is not an easy thing to do as he only has one hand! Gallery Two CLIP 2.2 This is one of the most modern stoves available today and called a fireheath Most of our boiled meat and stews are cooked on the two large coppers at the front. At the back, Mr Thompson will bake a pie or some bread for the officers. Boiling water is always available for the captain, gentleman or the surgeon. CLIP 2.3 Mr Thompson will cook whatever we catch. If you are quick enough it might include a nice fat rat to roast over the fire. I m not bonkers, rats taste alright and it s a nice change from salted meat and hard tack biscuits I can tell you! CLIP 2.4 Lt Cook wants us to eat limes, carrot marmalade and pickled cabbage called sauerkraut. They say it helps against scurvy, I ve seen men with scurvy their gums bleed and their teeth fall out. It s scary! CLIP 2.5 Behind the fireheath are cabins and work areas for the sailmaker, carpenter (who is very important on a wooden ship) and the boatswain. The boatswain sets out all the jobs for the deck crew each day and checks that it is all done. Lt Cook started out as a boatswain when he first joined the Navy! Station Three Mess Deck tables CLIP 3.1 This is the mess, where the sailors eat, but as you can see it s very neat! It comes from a French word that means food. Up to 60 sailors live, sleep and socialise here every day and night. Gallery Three CLIP 3.2 The Navy gives you one of these sea chests to store your things in. You have to supply your own clothes, bowl, spoon and mug. CLIP 3.3 On the ship, lunch is the main meal of the day. Six sailors sit at each table and choose someone as cook of the mess who takes the tables rations to the cook to prepare. He brings the food back and serves. See those things that look like rope hair? That s what you use to wipe your face and hands. Once a week we get a boiled raisin pudding, it s my favourite. HM BARK ENDEAVOUR TRANSCRIPT 2 of 6

CLIP 3.4 Do you notice anything strange about these tables? That s right; they are hung by ropes instead of having legs. This leaves more room underneath and also helps to keep them stable in rough seas. We have square plates here square plates for three square meals a day. CLIP 3.5 What s that cat doing there asleep? Someone give him a prod so he gets about his business of catching a few rats in here! CLIP 3.6 Each sailor has a number where he slings his hammock (that s a bed hung from the ceiling). The Master of the Watch can find any sailor in the middle of the night by these numbers. So the mess is also a bedroom for the crew. Station 4 Mess Deck Hammocks CLIP 4.1 The Endeavour used to be the coal carrier the Earl of Pembroke. The Navy put in this whole deck for the larger crew and gentlemen, especially for this voyage. It is very low here but you ll get used to it once you have hit your head a few times! Gallery Four CLIP 4.2 As I said the crew sleep above the mess tables. You have 14 inches of space for your bed if you don t know how much that is, imagine a ruler and add just a pinch on the end. It s all the space we can afford on a ship this size. CLIP 4.3 Officers have hanging cots and 18 inches of room, that s 1½ rulers. The senior officers and the gentlemen have their own cabins. CLIP 4.4 Every single morning you have to take down your hammock, lash it and stow it which means pack it away. You need to roll it to fit through the grommet ring and it will be checked to make sure you stowed it correctly! The Navy only issues you with a blanket so you need to buy your own mattress and pillow! CLIP 4.5 All our food, water and other supplies are kept belowdecks but don t go down there unless you are on official business. Hanging on that post is a little red bag which is something you don t want to see too often. It s the cat o nine tails. It s a whip made of 9 plaited strands of rope. If you break the rules, you will be punished 12 strokes for disobedience, talking back to an officer, stealing or being drunk. If you run away, or if you commit more serious crimes, you can expect 24 strokes. Lt Cook is a fair man but the rules have to be followed. HM BARK ENDEAVOUR TRANSCRIPT 3 of 6

Station 5 Marines, Servants, Boys CLIP 5.1 We have 12 marines on board this vessel. They make sure the ship is safe and guard everyone when they go ashore in landing parties. Twenty four hours a day a marine guard is posted outside Lt Cook s cabin and the gunpowder store. We use gun powder for the cannons and swivel guns (you might have seen them up on the deck) and firearms. We don t want anyone taking a candle or open-flame lamp anywhere near the gunpowder. What do you think would happen then? That s right kaboom! Gallery five CLIP 5.2 The marines sling their hammocks on the portside which is the left side of the ship. It s cramped here but they have to be put between the officers and the crew, just in case there s any trouble. They wear red coats and carry guns so you can t mistake them. CLIP 5.3 On the starboard which is the right side, the gentleman s servants and boys sleep. Isaac Manley is the youngest he s 12. They serve the officers and look after the animals. Yes, we have animals on board; there are chickens for eggs; sheep and pigs for meat. There s even a goat so the officers can have milk. I hear she has sailed around the world already. Now that is one well travelled goat. Station 6 Midshipman s Mess and Officers cabins CLIP 6.1 Here we are in the midshipmen and mates mess. Eight people live here, including me. We are all around the same age 18 or 19 and have been at sea since we were boys so we are used to life at sea. On either side of us are six small officer s cabins. Officers are NOT TO BE DISTURBED but you need to know who they are. Gallery Five CLIP 6.2 Lt Cook s clark, Richard Orton, who keeps many of the ship s records and our 3 rd Lieutenant Mr Gore (an American no less!) are in the first two cabins. Lt Gore has already been around the world twice and is a very good shot. CLIP 6.3 The ship s Master Robert Molyneux also has a cabin here, he helps navigate the ship. You can see some of his instruments. He is also in charge of boat work and the storage of supplies. It s quite complicated. CLIP 6.4 Apart from eating and sleeping here we also write in our journals and talk when we are off-duty. As you can see the dinnerware here is far superior to what the crew can afford. CLIP 6.5 There are other officers who have cabins here, including Mr Hicks, our 2 nd Lieutenant and second in command, you can see his personal belongings. HM BARK ENDEAVOUR TRANSCRIPT 4 of 6

CLIP 6.6 Our surgeon Mr Munkhouse is my elder brother, I am very proud of him as he is an excellent man to help you when you are sick or wounded. Here are the pills, potions and elixirs he mixes. He is always talking to the gentleman about the strange plants they have found and their potential medicinal properties. Station Seven Gentleman Quarters, Officers Mess CLIP 7.1 The officers have their own mess up here on the deck above their cabins. Like the sailors in their mess and the midshipmen in theirs, the officers will eat and relax here. The crew cannot come into this area unless they are following an officer s order! Gallery Seven CLIP 7.2 You can see Mr Green s cabin over here. He is going to record the Transit of Venus that s when the planet moves across the face of the sun. This is the main reason we are going on this voyage. However I have heard a rumour around the ship that there are secret orders to look for a great land to the South. Lt Cook would know that for sure, I hope we know soon. CLIP 7.3 The officers buy things for their mess too you can see some of their very fine cups and dishes on the sideboard, much better than ours! CLIP 7.4 The largest cabin is of course for Lieutenant Cook. Even he sleeps in a swinging cot and he keeps many of his charts, books and journals here. He is the most important man on the ship. He is our Captain. CLIP 7.5 Mr Parkinson, the artist, also has a cabin here. He is very excited at being able to draw and paint all the strange and wondrous plants, animals and people we encounter. He has started collecting some plants which he then paints in his cabin. Station Eight The Great Cabin Usually this cabin is just for the Captain to work in, but on this voyage he shares it with the gentlemen scientists. Mr Joseph Banks and his good friend and colleague Dr Daniel Solander are collecting and studying all the new plant and animal life we come across. This room is filled with people on this voyage. The artists, secretary Hermann Sporing; and the gentleman s servants and field assistants Peter Briscoe, James Roberts, George Dalton and Thomas Richmond. Gallery Eight CLIP 8.2 Here s Mr Banks cabin. He is a very clever, wealthy, young man and you can see his shell collection and some of his books some say he has brought more than 100 books with him! He is collecting all manner of strange things, some of which are really smelly. HM BARK ENDEAVOUR TRANSCRIPT 5 of 6

CLIP 8.3 He is a very tall man so I don t know how he is going to fit into that small bunk. He s bought his dogs but the ship s cat has shown them who s boss! CLIP 8.4 This is a grand room, full of the work of the important people on board. On the main table you can see all the officers charts of the coast and their scientific books. They write everything they discover in their journals to publish when they get back to England. CLIP 8.5 These learned gentlemen write with quills you know what a quill is? It s a sharp piece of metal stuck into the end of a fancy feather. You dip the metal end into ink then you can write with it. Those of you who can write might get to use them one day if you become an officer. CLIP 8.6 Some of you might be asked to bring the officers their food and drink in here, or to light the stove over there if you are, make sure you are careful about it! We don t want you burning the ship down, do we? Station Nine the Quarter Deck CLIP 9.1 This is a very important area of the ship and you need permission from the officers to be here. From here you can see right along the deck and keep an eye on the sails and the crew. This is the stern or back part of the ship and the ship s wheel or helm is where the officer in command stands. You can t see them but we also have cannons on board. We need them to protect us from pirates and ships from other countries unfriendly to England! Gallery Nine CLIP 9.2 It takes two helmsmen to work the ship s wheel connected to a long piece of wood called the tiller. This is how we steer the ship. You have to be alert when working on this part of the deck, as many a sailor has been knocked over by a sudden tiller movement! CLIP 9.3 There is a lot of equipment around including the log-line and reel, a compass, a sandglass, and the leadline. They are used to either help plot our course, measure the speed of the ship or check how deep the water is. You need to study these things, which I am doing as well. This is all part of my training to become an officer one day. CLIP 9.4 By the way, if you need it before you leave, there s another toilet here that funny green-looking metal thing. It s called a pissdale. Only the officers are supposed to use it but in this case we won t tell. HM BARK ENDEAVOUR TRANSCRIPT 6 of 6
