DEFINITIONS & METHODS Aeration Aeration is the transfer of oxygen from air into water. All healthy bodies of water need oxygen for the normal biological cycle.

In smaller lakes and ponds, it is easy for biological factors to become unbalanced, causing the oxygen levels to drop, making it necessary for mechanical aeration.

Without sufficient circulation, a pond becomes stratified with warmer water on the surface and colder, oxygen-depleted water on the bottom.

An uncirculated or non aerated pond or lake develops a thermocline. This is a stratification of the water by temperature.

Proper circulation and aeration will increase the amount of oxygen at all depths, and break down the thermocline.

Aeration also improves the effectiveness of bacterial products that reduce nutrients and improve water clarity.

5 DEFINITIONS & METHODS Aeration Aeration is the transfer of oxygen from air into water. All healthy bodies of water need oxygen for the normal biological cycle. In large bodies of water, this occurs naturally as a result of wave action. In smaller lakes and ponds, it is easy for biological factors to become unbalanced, causing the oxygen levels to drop, making it necessary for mechanical aeration. Insufficient aeration and low oxygen levels can cause fish kills, unpleasant smells and unsightly water. Without sufficient circulation, a pond becomes stratified with warmer water on the surface and colder, oxygen-depleted water on the bottom. Lack of oxygen increases the anaerobic (without oxygen) decomposition of the sludge at the bottom. That increases nutrients in the pond, which, in turn, increases algae blooms. An uncirculated or non aerated pond or lake develops a thermocline. This is a stratification of the water by temperature. The warmer water is at the surface in contact with the air and the cooler water drops to the bottom where it becomes oxygen starved. Proper circulation and aeration will increase the amount of oxygen at all depths, and break down the thermocline. Aerating a pond provides a healthier habitat for fish, reduces algae blooms, improves water clarity and rids the pond of bad smells. Aeration also improves the effectiveness of bacterial products that reduce nutrients and improve water clarity. ACI offers three types of mechanical means to add oxygen to a lake or pond: Surface Aerators, Lake Bed Aerators and Pond Bottom Circulators. Definition of a Floating Display Aerator There has been much confusion in the industry regarding the definition of an aerator. The Aqua Control definition is very specific: only high pumping rate, axial (propeller) pumps are called Aerators because good aeration can only be achieved by high pumping rates. Our Display Aerators pump high flow rates relative to the horsepower while creating very attractive patterns that have a high aeration efficiency. Fountains, on the other hand, are created with centrifugal pumps which produce higher patterns, but with much lower flow rates. ACI feels that these pumps should not be called Aerators or even Aerating Fountains even though their splash does create some aeration. Testing Methods Aqua Control, Inc. has always tried to ensure that published flow rates, gallons per minute (GPM), spray heights, and diameters are as accurate as possible. Because of this dedication to accuracy, ACI has helped to create, and is a member of an industry organization of aerator and fountain manufacturers the Aeration and Fountain Manufacturers Association (AFMA). This organization is working hard to ensure that all manufacturers in the industry publish accurate GPMs, spray heights, and diameters. Some manufacturers are less than accurate with their performance figures and choose to not be associated with the industry standards. Simple, economical and effective extension suction tubes can be added to any vertical pump to provide water intake at virtually any depth, giving very deep ponds or lakes effective circulation. The Select Series can be lit with up to 12 submersible lights and a choice of up to six colors. The fountain can be operated in as little as 37 inches (1,3 meters) of water and can be lit with up to 20 submersible lights and a choice of up to six colors. The suction screen is cleaned from a boat and is easily removed without tools for complete cleaning. Horizontal The Horizontal Configuration uses the same pump as the Vertical Configuration, but is designed with the motor and pump mounted horizontally. A Horizontal Configuration can operate in as little as 28 inches (0,7 meters) of water. The advantage of a Horizontal Configuration is the ability to operate any horsepower in very shallow ponds or lakes. ACI Select Series Horizontal Configurations require only 28 inches of water depth for shallow water applications, while the Evolution Series requires only 20 inches of depth. ACI s design reduces float visibility to a minimum during operation. ACI uses stainless steel submersible motors with mechanical seals and heavy duty bearings. Pump components consist of stainless steel, bronze and engineered plastics. Most Display Aerator patterns are interchangeable within the same horsepower. Most Fountain patterns are interchangeable within the same horsepower. JOB SITE REQUIREMENTS Determine the actual depth of the pond and whether a Horizontal or Vertical Configuration should be chosen. Determine the size of the pond and whether the spray pattern desired will fit within the pond s dimensions. Consider if aeration is a requirement based on the water quality. Determine the surface acre size of the pond and horsepower required for adequate aeration. 1 HP per surface acre is the minimum HP to properly aerate a water body with a Display Aerator. Determine the electrical voltage and phase that is available for the site and how many amps are available from the power supply. An anti-clogging, 316 grade stainless steel suction screen is included with all products. Underwater Quick Disconnects are included for pump and lights. CONSIDERATIONS FOR SIZING DISPLAY AERATORS AND FOUNTAINS Deep suction with the Vertical Configuration provides bottom-to-top water movement for superior pond circulation. Saltwater products are available and use 316 grade stainless steel components for superior anti-corrosion and durability. Determine where the ACI Control Panel will be installed and how far it will be from the power source. This determines power source to Control Panel cord length and gauge. Determine how far the ACI Control Panel will be from the Display Aerator or Fountain. Determine the length and gauge of cord that is needed between the ACI Control Panel and the Display Aerator or Fountain. The high velocity flow allows the circulation to extend a considerable distance so that one or two Pond Bottom Circulators can create complete circulation in a pond or cove, depending on the size. In addition, the flow is directed slightly upwards so the bottom water is gradually brought to the surface. This brings the deep, oxygen poor water to the surface from below the thermocline where it is naturally and effectively aerated.
