3 Fumitoxin Coated Insecticide Tablets NRA Approval No 32069/0700 Page 3 of 6 GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS Precautions Fumigation of Packaged Products under Tarpaulins Cover stock with polyethylene and place tablets on kraft paper in space to be fumigated so that polyethylene cannot cover them. Never pile tablets on top of each other, place them without touching each other. Ensure thorough sealing of edges of sheet on ground. Post warning signs on all four sides of stack. Ensure good cross ventilation around stacks during working hours. Ventilation - On Completion of Exposure Period Phosphine disperses rapidly. Minimum ventilation periods are as follows: Structures containing treated commodities: with throughflow and forced draught from flash proof fan operated for two hours on and two hours off for hours depending on size of structure with throughflow and natural draught for structures of 300 tonnes or greater capacity, not less than 2 days depending on structure size openings and prevailing wind speed. For structures of less than 300 tonnes capacity not less than 5 days. Tobacco in bales, not less than 2 days. In cases and hogsheads not less than 3 days. Well sealed, plastic covered bunker storage at not less than 1,000 tonnes capacity, 2 hours after removal of covering. Beehives, supers and other beekeeping equipment, not less than 2 days. For Fumigation of Vertical Storage Ascertain ventilation facilities for basement. Open containers in open air and apply tablets by hand or on belt in headhouse. Warning sign should be placed on the batch cover and discharge spout of each treated bin. Following application basement and headhouse should be checked before work starts. For Fumigation of Bulkheads and Flat Storage Check storage for tightness. Open containers in open air. Apply tablets using probes which should be inserted at 1-2 m intervals horizontally in both directions. The tablets will be dropped into probes as they are withdrawn. Cross ventilation should be provided during application. Covering surface of commodity with plastic sheets, reduces convection currents. Sheets must be removed after fumigation is completed. KEEP AWAY FROM WATER AND OTHER LIQUIDS. WATER AND MANY LIQUIDS CAUSE QUICK RELEASE OF PHOSPHINE. KEEP AWAY FROM NAKED FLAME. After fumigation remove tablets and ensure residual phosphine is destroyed before disposal e.g. by swamping with dilute acid or soapy water until bubbling ceases. Carry out in open air. Dispose of saturated dust residue as per the disposal statements under the heading Storage and Disposal. INSECTICIDE RESISTANCE WARNING GROUP 8 B INSECTICIDE For insecticide resistance management Fumitoxin Coated Insecticide Tablets ( Fumitoxin ) is a Group 8B insecticide. Some naturally occurring insect biotypes resistant to Fumitoxin and other Group 8B insecticides may exist through normal genetic variability in any insect population. The resistant individuals can eventually dominate the insect population if Fumitoxin or other Group 8B insecticides are used repeatedly. The effectiveness of Fumitoxin on resistant individuals could be significantly reduced. Since occurrence of resistant individuals is difficult to detect prior to use. Nufarm Limited accepts no liability for any losses that may result from the failure of Fumitoxin to control resistant insects. Fumitoxin may be subject to specific resistance management strategies. PROTECTION OF WILDLIFE, FISH, CRUSTACEANS AND ENVIRONMENT Do not contaminate streams, rivers or waterways with the chemical, saturated dust residue or used containers. STORAGE AND DISPOSAL Store in a locked room or place away from children, animals, food, feedstuffs, seed and fertilisers. Store in the closed original container in a dry, cool wellventilated area out of direct sunlight. Break, crush or puncture and bury empty containers in a local authority landfill. If no landfill is available, bury the containers below 500 mm in a disposal pit specifically marked and set up for this purpose clear of waterways, desirable vegetation and tree roots. Empty containers and product should not be burnt. SAFETY DIRECTIONS Very dangerous. Product can kill if swallowed. Releases dangerous phosphine gas slowly in moist air and immediately if wet. Can kill if inhaled. Do not inhale vapour. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Do not inhale dust. Open container in the open air. Keep away from water and liquids. Keep away from naked flames - forms toxic gas. Use entire contents in one operation; if not possible, seal thoroughly with water proof adhesive tape or air-tight closure. When opening the container and using the product, wear elbow length PVC gloves. If dispensing by hand, wear full facepiece respirator with combined dust and gas cartridge (canister) or supplied air respirator. Wash hands after use. FIRST AID If poisoning occurs, contact a Doctor or Poisons Information Centre (Phone ). Do not give mouthto-mouth resuscitation if swallowed. To protect rescuer, use air-viva, oxy-viva or one-way mask. Resuscitate in a well-ventilated area. NOTE TO DOCTORS For severe poisoning administration of a cardiac tonic and a drug to stimulate blood circulation is recommended. Under some circumstances blood transfusions or infusion of isotonic solutions of sodium chloride or glucose into the blood system are indicated. Pulmonary edema and convulsion may occur. Angoumois grain moth, bean weevil, cadelle, cigarette beetle, coffee bean weevil, confused flour beetle, dried fruit beetles, flat grain beetles, granary weevil, Indian meal moth, lesser grain borer, maize weevil, Mediterranean flour moth, merchant grain beetle, mottled grain moth, psocids, raisin moth, redlegged ham beetle, rice weevil, rust-red flour beetle, sawtoothed grain beetle, skin and hide beetle, spider beetles, stored product mites, tobacco moth, tropical warehouse moth, warehouse beetle. For control of the larger wax moth and the lesser wax moth in stored beehives, supers and other beekeeping equipment. Treatment for the above pests at the specified rates will kill any cockroaches, rats and mice present. RESTRAINTS DO NOT use for fumigation purposes in inhabited structures. DO NOT use on commodities in transit or on commodities which will be transported before completion of the sum period recommended for exposure plus ventilation. DO NOT use when temperature of commodity is below 15 C, when grain moisture content is less than 9% or relative humidity within the structure is less than 25%. DO NOT apply as a surface-only treatment if the structure is not well-sealed or if the headspace of a structure whose height exceeds twice the width, is less than 10% of the internal volume and its temperature will exceed 45 C. Well-sealed means sealing by approved methods (see SCA Ent. Committee Dosage Recommendations for the Fumigation of Grain with Phosphine p.2) i.e. permanent sealing of porous surfaces, seams, cracks and temporary sealing of intake and/or outlet, valves, doors, window and hatches. NOTE STRUCTURES GREATER THAN 375m 3 (300 TONNES) CAPACITY ARE EXPECTED TO BE WELL-SEALED. IF THEY ARE NOT, FUMIGATION MAY GIVE INADEQUATE CONTROL. **Structures which cannot be well-sealed should not be treated with products designed for surface only application (such as strips plates). ***Phosphine application rates are based on the internal volume of the structures to be fumigated, they apply equally to full or empty structures and they apply to all commodities. Commodity equivalent rates (g/tonnes) should only be used when the commodity stowage factor is known, they apply only when the storage structures are full or nearly full or when part-filled structures are dosed on the tonnage equivalents of their internal volumes. The calculated commodity equivalent dosage must be based on the rate per volume. Minimum exposure periods should start from the time of completion of application e.g. the time taken to fill a storage with grain dosed tablets is not part of the exposure period. NOT TO BE USED FOR ANY PURPOSE OR IN ANY MANNER CONTRARY TO THIS LABEL UNLESS AUTHORISED UNDER APPROPRIATE LEGISLATION. WITHHOLDING PERIOD: ALLOW A PERIOD OF 2 DAYS AFTER COMPLETION OF VENTILATION BEFORE USING TREATED COMMODITIES FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION OR FOR STOCK FOOD. TREATED COMMODITIES MAY BE SAFELY TRANSPORTED AFTER COMPLETION OF THE RECOMMENDED VENTILATION PERIOD.
