Pure Ivermectin is considered highly toxic in acute animal studies. The acute oral toxicity studies of ivermectin have shown clear differences among species in sensitivity to ivermectin toxicity. Rodents are uniquely sensitive compared to the other species in which the compound has been tested. It is therefore inappropriate to base human risk assessment on the response in mice. Ivermectin is used at a therapeutic dose of 200 mcg/kg in a variety of species, including humans. If overexposed to ivermectin, symptoms may include decreased activity, slow rate of breathing, dilation of the pupils, muscle tremors and incoordination. Direct contact of the solution with eyes can cause irritation Ivermectin is non-irritating in animal studies. Although skin absorption of ivermectin is not established, it has been shown that less than 1% of the closely related compound abamectin is absorbed through the skin of rhesus monkeys when it is applied as emulsifiable concentrate or suspended in alcohol. Prolonged or repeated contact may cause irritation and/or drying and cracking of the skin. Vapours of isopropyl alcohol may cause mild irritation of the nose and throat. Prolonged exposures to isopropyl alcohol may cause nausea, headache and mild narcosis. Toxicity to ivermectin has not been observed with this route of administration. 3 HEALTH HAZARD DATA (Cont.) Chronic Unknown for product mixture. When this product is used according to the directions, prolonged exposure of man is not expected. Ivermectin has tested negative in several mutagenicity studies. Ivermectin was administered to dogs daily for 3 months and to monkeys daily for 2 weeks. In dogs there was no effect up to 500 mcg/kg/day and in adult rhesus monkeys there was no effect at the maximum dosage used 1.2 mg/kg/day. At higher doses in dogs there was dilation of the pupils, and at still higher doses tremor and anorexia were noted. Ivermectin can be given during gestation in horses, cattle, pigs and sheep. The results of the developmental toxicity studies with ivermectin demonstrate that a low incidence of abnormalities was produced only at dosage levels at or near those producing severe signs of materno-toxicity - including death - in some dams. Therefore, ivermectin is not considered to be selectively embryotoxic. Years of widespread clinical use of ivermectin in pregnant animals of a variety of species have failed to produce any evidence of developmental toxicity, further supporting the above conclusion. (Campbell [1989] Ivermectin and Abamectin, page 100). FIRST AID: Swallowed Do not induce vomiting. Seek medical attention. Eye Wash immediately with copious quantities of water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation persists seek medical attention. Skin Wash thoroughly with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Inhalation Remove to fresh air. 4 PRECAUTIONS FOR USE (Cont.) ENGINEERING CONTROLS: As the product is manufactured overseas, these precautions will not apply. However, it is recommended that exposures be kept to a minimum. Proper ventilation should be maintained at all times. PERSONAL PROTECTION: Personnel involved in any spill clean-up should wear full protective clothing (cap, waterproof overalls, jacket and rubber boots). Goggles and impervious rubber gloves (neoprene/nitrile/ polyvinyl chloride)should also be worn when handling spilled material. If activity results in vapour/mist concentrations above the TVL/PEL, an Australian Standards approved respirator for vapour/mists is recommended. FLAMMABILITY: Because of the isopropyl alcohol content, this product is classified as a Class 3.1 (flammability) hazard under the Australian Dangerous Goods Code. It will not burn or ignite under normal usage but is a dangerous fire hazard and moderate explosion hazard when exposed to heat, flames or oxidisers. Vapours may travel a considerable distance to an ignition source and flashback. SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION STORAGE & TRANSPORT: Gives off highly flammable vapour. Keep away from heat, sparks, open flame and other sources of ignition. Keep closed when not in use. Protect containers from physical damage. Store below 30 C in original container and protect from light. Store in closed containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from heat, sparks and open flame. Protect containers from physical damage. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Do not breath vapours or mist. Do not ingest. Wash thoroughly after handling. Keep containers closed when not in use. Before opening large containers, release any pressure build-up by loosening closure slowly. The containers should be stored in their original boxes when not in use. Keep out of reach of children. 5 SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION (Cont.) SPILLS AND DISPOSALS: Steps to be taken in case materials are released: Ivermectin binds well with the soil and other solid materials which inhibit soil migration. Absorb small spills on spill pillows or other suitable absorbing material and place in a sealed, labelled container for disposal. Use suitable protective equipment. The largest container used in Australia is 5 Litres. In the case of spills or leaks, isolate the hazard area and keep onlookers away. Personnel involved in any spill clean-up should wear full protective clothing (cap, waterproof overalls, jacket and rubber boots). Goggles and impervious rubber gloves (neoprene/nitrile/ polyvinyl chloride)should also be worn when handling spilled material. Do not allow flares, smoking or flame in an isolated area. Wear respiratory protection if prolonged exposure to the vapours of this product occurs. Methods for disposal: Triple or pressure rinse empty containers. Do not dispose of undiluted chemicals on-site. Break, crush or puncture and bury empty containers in a local authority landfill. If no landfill is available, bury the containers below 500 mm in a disposal pit specifically marked and set up for this purpose clear of waterways, vegetation and roots. Empty containers and product should not be burnt. Do not contaminate dams, rivers or streams. Studies indicate that ivermectin binds readily and tightly to the soil and becomes inactive over time. Free ivermectin may adversely affect fish and certain water-borne organisms. FIRE/EXPLOSION HAZARD: Extinguishing media: Carbon dioxide, dry chemical, alcohol resistant foam. Use water spray to cool fire - exposed containers. A fine water mist may be used to smother fire or to disperse vapours. Special fire-fighting procedures: Do not use a solid stream of water since the steam will scatter and spread the fire.
