3 LL916C3 UNDERWATER SPEAKER & AC203/4 TRANSFORMER BOX The Lubell Labs Model LL916C3 underwater speaker with AC203/4 inline audio isolation transformer box was designed to meet the need for a quality, high output underwater speaker selling at a reasonable price. Its patented broadband high-output design easily fills large pools with pleasing, wide range sound. It is as effective for synchronized and lap swimming as it is for communicating with divers and dolphins in the open ocean. The LL916C3 integrates features from LL Model I and LL Model II prototypes. The piston closure of the Model I provides ruggedness at a reasonable cost, while the improved acoustic design of the Model II enhances the quality and quantity of available sound. The ribbed casting, flanged piston design of the speaker makes possible the attainment of low Q in a small size underwater radiator, while the integral compliance element presents an optimum load to the driving element. The shell of the LL916C3 serves the dual function of piston radiator and water tight enclosure for driving element and electronics. Electrical variations are changed to force variations using the piezoelectric effect. The force variations move the two pistons in unison against the reaction of radiation resistance and mass. Because of the high impedance of aqueous media, small excursions of the pistons produce acoustic waves of considerable strength. The speaker is clad in a rugged 30 mil blue PVC coating with redundant seals, and is EPDM shock mounted in a PVC coated stainless steel cage. A 25 heavy duty cord is hardwired to the speaker and is fitted with a molded Conxall Multi-Con-X PG-524 connector. For portable air and underwater sound applications, the LL916C3 is provided with the model AC203/4 audio isolation transformer box. This box can connect to 4/8 ohm tap of standard GFCI protected amplifier, providing that the amplifier power output rating does not exceed 50 watts rms (20V rms). The transformer box has a top mounted.250 AIR output jack for an optional 8 ohm air speaker (LL6T, SX80, or Impulse 100), a side mounted.250 LL98 output jack for a Lubell LL98 U/W speaker, and a side mounted 3-pin LL916 output jack for a lubell LL916C3 U/W speaker. (Only one UW speaker and air speaker may be connected at a time.) The AC203/4 s efficient autoformer AIR volume control allows adjustment of the air speaker sound level once the UW sound level has been set at the amplifier. 2

5 OPERATION & MAINTENANCE WARNING!: Always vacate the pool during inclement weather and lightning storms. Inspect all speaker and power cables before each use - do not use if damaged. Connect AC powered equipment to grounded GFCI outlet only. Keep AC powered equipment on a wooden equipment table at least 10 back from the water in a dry location. Wear dry rubber soled shoes when setting up and operating equipment. Avoid excessive sound levels and/or microphone feedback squeal, which is harmful to hearing and equipment. Read and understand National Electric Code (N.E.C.) Guidelines regarding Pool Audio Equipment (available at library or from city electrical inspector). 1. Set up a wooden equipment table 10 away from the water in the corner deck of the deep end. Place the Peavey MP400M amplifier on the table, and connect the Lubell AC203/4 Circuit Master s attached cord to one of the SPEAKER OUTPUTS on the rear panel. (Do not connect another speaker to the extra SPEAKER OUTPUT as this will damage system.) 2. Place the air speaker (LL6T, Impulse 100, or SX80) on the deck or SS7761B tripod stand, facing away from the equipment table to minimize microphone feedback. Aim the air speaker diagonally (and slightly upward) across the water towards the bleachers to provide sound to the pool surface, deck, and bleacher zones. Connect the air speaker to the Lubell AC203/4 Circuit Master s top AIR SPEAKER jack using a Horizon 16 ga speaker cord ( ). Allow sufficient slack in this cable, route neatly around speaker stand and base, and cover with a cord protector or rubber mat to prevent trips and damage. 3. Attach a 3/16 rope of sufficient length to the Lubell LL916C3 underwater speaker cage. Lower the UW speaker to a 6 depth in the corner of the deep end; Tether in position or place on bottom. (Be extremely careful to keep the UW speaker connector dry during this step, and not to scrape the cable on rough surfaces.) Connect the UW speaker cable to the Lubell AC203/4 Circuit Master s side LL916 UW SPEAKER jack. Allow sufficient slack in this cable, route neatly across deck and cover with a cord protector or rubber mat to prevent trips and damage. 4. Using a Lubell SPC1 Resistive Summing Patch Cord (dual RCA male to male), connect the TEAC AD600 CD/cassette s left/right TAPE OUTPUT jacks to the CHANNEL 1 LINE (HIGH Z) INPUT jack on the Peavey MP400M amplifier. (If you are using a stereo boom box or Walkman, set it s VOLUME control to 5, and connect it s HEADPHONE jack to the CHANNEL 1 LINE (HIGH Z) INPUT jack on the Peavey MP400M amplifier using a Lubell SPC2 Resistive Summing Patch Cord (3.5mm stereo mini plug to male). 5. Connect a high quality plastic bodied microphone (Lubell PRO 2AX) to the CHANNEL 2 MIC (LOW Z) INPUT jack on the Peavey MP400M amplifier. Turn switch on microphone body to OFF position until needed (see step 8 for instructions). 6. Connect optional ATW1451 wireless headset microphone receiver s AF OUT to the CHANNEL 3 LINE (HIGH Z) INPUT jack on the Peavey MP400M amplifier using a Horizon HC-3 cord. 4

Now that all equipment is connected, pre-set controls as follows: Boom-box VOLUME to 5; Peavey MP400M CHANNEL 1 LEVEL control to 5, and CHANNEL 2 & 3 LEVEL control to 0; Peavey MP400M CONTOUR, LOW, MID, and HIGH controls to 0; Peavey MP400M MASTER LEVEL control to 0; Peavey MP400M REVERB and MASTER REVERB to 0; ATW1451 wireless receiver AF LEVEL to maximum (full clockwise); AC203/4 Circuit Master AIR LEVEL control to To set sound levels in this step, you will need three synchronized swimmers in the following locations: under the water, on top of the water, and in the bleachers. Connect the Peavey MP400M power cord and tape deck power cord into an audio grade surge protected power strip, then to the GFCI outlet. Turn the Peavey POWER switch to the ON postion (MASTER LEVEL at 0!). Insert a tape or CD into the TEAC CD/cassette (or boom-box), and advance the music to a known section of music that is very loud. Slowly turn up the Peavey MP400M s MASTER LEVEL control until the submerged swimmer indicates (with thumb up or down) that the UW sound level is correct and undistorted. Now turn the AC203/4 Circuit Master s AIR LEVEL control up or down until the above-water swimmer and the bleacher person indicates that the air sound level is correct (compromise if necessary). The AIR LEVEL control on the AC203/4 Circuit Master is now optimized, and should not be touched again during the practice or competition. During the competition, you will need to keep your fingers on the Peavey MP400M amplifier s CHANNEL 1 LEVEL knob at all times to keep the sound level consistent from tape to tape. If you have not trained your ears to recognize a consistent level, you can use a Radio Shack Sound Level Meter $39.99) from your table to observe and maintain a consistent sound level reading in the room. When playing tapes of varying level and quality during the meet, listen carefully to what you hear from the air speaker, and use the Peavey MP400M amplifier s CHANNEL 1 LEVEL control and LOW/HIGH equalizer controls (sparingly) to maintain a consistent sound level and tonal quality. Always return equalizer controls to 0 position when inserting the next team s tape. Avoid using the mid equalizer control or contour controls - leave at 0 position. If you hear distortion in the air speaker, then the swimmers will also hear this distortion in the underwater speaker -- reduce the CHANNEL 1 LEVEL control immediately until the distortion is no longer heard. 9. Always use the microphone(s) behind the air speaker to minimize squeal. Hold microphone against lips, speak in a strong voice, and turn the CHANNEL 2 LEVEL knob (handheld mic) or CHANNEL 3 LEVEL knob (wireless mic) up on the Peavey MP400M amplifier until the desired sound level is reached. If no sound, then fully reduce the CHANNEL 2 and/or 3 LEVEL control on the Peavey MP400M amp, and check the microphone connections and power switch. Once connections are corrected and/or power is turned on, then turn up the CHANNEL 2 and/or 3 LEVEL knob until microphone sound level adequate. CAUTION: DO NOT ALLOW MICROPHONE SQUEAL -- this is harmful to the swimmers, audience, and the loudspeakers. If squeal starts, immediately turn microphone off using switch on microphone, then lower microphone volume control on amplifier. 10. After using equipment, tear down in reverse order. Inspect all cables for damage. Towel dry the UW speaker, and carefully coil the speaker cable inside the cage recess (just as you would coil a garden hose). Store all equipment in a dry, air conditioned equipment room far from the damaging corrosive effects of the natatorium. 5

7 SYSTEM APPLICATION These remarkable sets are state-of-the-art. Many engineers and scientists working in the field of underwater acoustics are still unaware of the feasibility of compressing the size of a low-frequency transducer without reducing it s efficiency; or of the feasibility of driving a piezoelectric transducer over broad-band frequencies using common transistor amplifier circuitry. 8 OBTAINING SERVICE No user serviceable parts are contained in the LL916C3 underwater speaker, AC203/4 Circuit Master box, LL6T - Impulse100 - SX80 air speakers, Audio-Technica microphones, Peavey MP400M amplifier, or the TEAC AD600 CD/cassette (though this devices heads should be cleaned/demagnitized by the owner every 10 hours of use). Should any of these items require service, please repackage securely in it s original shipping carton, and contact the manufacturer for a return authorization number (RA) and shipping instructions: Audio-Technica, EV Audio, Lubell Labs, Marantz/Denon, Peavey, TEAC, Please include a packing list (itemize contents), copy of sales receipt, description of problem, your return address, and phone numbers to reach you at. Most repairs can be performed within 2 weeks. You will be contacted with an estimate prior to repair unless a maximum repair amount was approved in advance. LIMITED WARRANTY Lubell Labs warrants the LL916C3 and the AC203/4 to be free from defects in material and workmanship, under normal use and service, for a period of five years from the date of delivery to the first user-purchaser. Please refer to Audio-Technica, EV, Peavey, Marantz, and TEAC manuals for warranty information, and return items to appropriate manufacturer for service. During this warranty period, the obligation of Lubell Labs is limited to repairing or replacing, as Lubell Labs may elect, any part or parts of such product which after examination by Lubell Labs discloses to be defective in material and/or workmanship. Lubell Labs will provide warranty for any unit which is delivered, transported prepaid, to the Lubell Labs factory for examination and such examination reveals a defect in material and/or workmanship. This warranty does not cover travel expenses, the cost of specialized equipment for gaining access to the product, or labor charges for removal and re-installation of the product. Not covered under the warranty: speaker burn-out, cord or connector damage, coating damage on speaker or cage. This warranty does not extend to any unit which has been subjected to abuse, misuse, improper installation, or which has been inadequately maintained; nor to units which have problems relating to service or modification at any facility other than the Lubell Labs Factory. THERE ARE NO OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. IN NO EVENT SHALL LUBELL LABS BE LIABLE FOR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS OR ANY INDIRECT OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF ANY SUCH DEFECT IN MATERIAL OR WORKMANSHIP. 7
