3 MEC Preure Relief Valve Operation of Preure Relief Valve Preure relief valve are et and ealed by the manufacturer to function at a pecific tart-to-dicharge preure in accordance with UL 12. Thi et preure i marked on the relief valve and depend on the deign requirement of the container to be protected by the relief valve. If the container preure reache the tart-to-dicharge preure, the relief valve will open a light amount a the eat dic begin to move lightly away from the eat. If the preure continue to rie depite the initial dicharge through the relief valve, the eat dic will move to a full open poition with a udden pop. Thi popping ound i from which the term pop-action i derived. Whether the relief valve open a light amount or pop wide open, it will tart to cloe if the preure in the container diminihe. After the preure ha decreaed ufficiently, the relief valve pring will force the eat dic againt the eat tightly enough to prevent any further ecape of product. The preure at which the valve cloe tightly i referred to a the re-eal or blow-down preure. Generally, the re-eal preure will be lower than the tart-to-dicharge preure. Requirement for Preure Relief Valve Every container ued for toring or hauling LP-Ga and anhydrou ammonia mut be protected by a preure relief valve. Thee valve are deigned to protect the container againt the development of hazardou condition which might be created by any of the following: Hydrotatic preure due to overfilling or the trapping of liquid between two point. High preure reulting from expoure of the container to exceive external heat. High preure due to the ue of incorrect fuel. High preure due to improper purging of the container. Conult NFPA #58 for LP-Ga and ANSI #K61.1 for anhydrou ammonia, and/or any applicable DOT, local and tate regulation governing the application and ue of preure relief valve. Selection of MEC Preure Relief Valve for ASME Container The rate of dicharge required for a given container i determined by the calculation of the urface area of the container a hown in Chart A for LP-Ga and Chart B for anhydrou ammonia. The et preure of a preure relief valve depend upon the deign preure of the container. Refer to NFPA #58 Liquefied Petroleum Ga Code for more information.

4 MEC Preure Relief Valve Chart A - Minimum Required of Dicharge for LP-Ga Preure Relief Valve Ued on ASME Container From NFPA Code #58, Table (2008 Edition) Minimum required rate of dicharge in cubic feet per minute of air at 120% of the maximum permitted tartto-dicharge preure relief valve to be ued on container other than thoe contructed in accordance with Intertate Commerce pecification. 20 or le area = Total outide urface area of container in quare feet. When the urface area i not tamped on the name plate or when the marking i not legible, the area can be calculated by uing one of the following formula: 1. Cylindrical container with hemipherical head. Area (in q. ft.) = overall length (ft.) x Cylindrical container with other than hemipherical head. Area (in q. ft.) = [overall length (ft.) +. outide diameter (ft.)] x outide diameter (ft.) x Spherical container. Area (in q. ft.) = outide diameter (ft.) quared x = Required flow capacity in cubic feet per minute of air at tandard condition, 60 F. and atmopheric preure (14.7 pia). The flow rate dicharge may be interpolated for intermediate value of urface Chart B - Minimum Required of Dicharge for Anhydrou Ammonia Preure Relief Valve Ued on ASME Container From ANSI K , Appendix A area. For container with total outide urface area greater than 2000 quare feet, the required flow rate can be calculated uing the formula. in = 5.62 A Where A = total outide urface area of the container in quare feet. Valve not marked Air have rate marking in cubic feet per minute of liquefied petroleum ga. Thee can be converted to rating in cubic feet per minute of air by multiplying the liquefied petroleum ga rating by the factor lited below. Air flow rating can be converted to rating in cubic feet per minute of liquefied petroleum ga by dividing the air rating by the factor lited below. Air Converion Factor Container Type Air Converion Factor Minimum required rate of dicharge in cubic feet per minute of air at 120% of the maximum permitted tartto-dicharge preure for preure relief valve to be ued on container other than thoe contructed in accordance with United State Department of Tranportation cylinder pecification. 20 or le area = Total outide urface area of container in quare feet. 5 Intallation WARNING: Failure to follow thee intruction or to properly intall and maintain thi equipment could reult in an exploion and/or fire cauing property damage and peronal injury or death. Marhall Excelior Company equipment mut be intalled, operated and maintained in accordance with all federal, tate and local code and Marhall Excelior Company intruction. The intallation in mot tate mut alo comply with NFPA tandard 58 and 59, and ANSI K61.1. Only peronnel trained in the proper procedure, code, tandard and regulation of the LP-Ga and NH indutrie hould intall, maintain and ervice thi equipment. Be ure all intruction are read and undertood before intallation, operation and maintenance. Thee intruction mut be paed along to the end uer of the product. CAUTION: Contact or inhalation of liquid propane, ammonia and their vapor can caue eriou injury or death! NH and LP-ga mut be releaed outdoor in air current that will inure diperion to prevent expoure to people and livetock. LP-Ga mut be kept far enough from any open flame or other ource of ignition to prevent fire or exploion! LP-Ga i heavier than air and will not dipere or evaporate rapidly if releaed in till air. Conult NFPA Code 58 and 59 / ANSI K61.1 and/or any applicable regulation governing the application and ue of preure relief valve. Make ure you are thoroughly trained before you attempt any valve intallation, inpection or maintenance. Proper intallation i eential to the afe operation of preure relief valve. Intall MEC preure relief valve uing the following tep: 1. Check that the valve i clean and free of foreign material in the valve inlet and outlet. 2. Verify that the relief valve tart-to-dicharge etting and flow rate i correct for the application.. Apply a uitable PTFE thread ealant compound to the external NPT thread, or intall gaket provided for flanged connection. 4. Inpect the relief valve inlet and valve eat to enure no thread ealant or foreign material i preent. 5. Intall relief valve into container port or manifold uing appropriate wrench until leak tight joint i achieved. 6. Check for damage and proper operation after valve intallation. 7. After the container i charged with product, check joint for leakage uing Marhall Excelior leak detector. 8. After intallation i complete, replace protective cap onto relief valve. To properly protect any container, the total ytem flow mut be ufficient to relieve preure at the preure etting of the relief valve in accordance with all applicable code. Inpection A preure relief valve dicharge when ome extraordinary circumtance caue an over preure condition in the container. If a preure relief valve i known to have dicharged, the relief valve, a well a the entire ytem, hould be immediately and thoroughly inpected to determine the reaon for the dicharge. In the cae of dicharge due to fire, the valve hould be removed from ervice and replaced. Relief valve hould be inpected each time the container i filled but no le than once a year. If there i any doubt about the condition of the valve, it mut be replaced. WARNING: Eye protection mut be worn when performing inpection on relief valve under preure. Never look directly into a relief valve under preure or place any part of your body where the relief valve dicharge could impact it. In ome cae a flahlight and mall mirror are uggeted to ait when making viual inpection. In the cae of a preure relief valve that ha opened due to a preure beyond it tart-to-dicharge etting, the chance of foreign material lodging between the eat and the dic i low, however the poibility i alway preent. If the relief valve continue to leak at preure below it tart-to-dicharge etting it mut be replaced. If there i any doubt about the condition of the relief valve, or if the relief valve ha not been protected by a cap for ome time, it hould be replaced before refilling the container. Inpection Checklit: 1. Cap: Check that the protective cap i in place over the valve outlet and ha a nug fit. The protective cap help protect the relief valve againt poible malfunction caued by rain, leet, now, ice, and, dirt, pebble, inect, other debri and contamination. REPLACE DAMAGED OR MISSING CAPS AT ONCE AND KEEP A CAP IN PLACE AT ALL TIMES. 2. Relief Valve Spring: Expoure to high concentration of water, alt, indutrial pollutant, chemical and contaminant could caue metal part to fail including the relief valve pring. IF DURING VISUAL INSPECTION THERE ARE ANY INDICATIONS OF DAMAGE OR CORROSION, REPLACE THE VALVE.. Phyical Damage: Ice accumulation and improper intallation could caue mechanical damage. IF THERE ARE ANY INDICATIONS OF DAMAGE, REPLACE THE VALVE. 4. Tampering or Readjutment: Preure relief valve are factory et to dicharge at pecified preure. IF THERE ARE ANY INDICATIONS OF TAMPERING OR READJUSTING, REPLACE THE VALVE. 5

6 MEC Preure Relief Valve Inpection Checklit Cont Seat Leakage: Check for leak in the eating area uing Marhall Excelior leak detection olution. IF THERE IS ANY INDICATION OF LEAKAGE REPLACE THE VALVE. Never force a relief valve cloed and continue to leave it in ervice. Thi could reult in damage to the valve and poible rupture of the container or piping on which the valve i intalled. 6. Corroion: REPLACE THE VALVE IF THERE ARE ANY SIGNS OF CORROSION OR CONTAMINATION. 7. Moiture, Foreign Particle or Contaminant in the Valve: Foreign material uch a paint, tar or ice in relief valve part can impair the proper functioning of the valve. Greae placed in the valve body may harden over time or collect contaminant, thereby impairing the proper operation of the relief valve. DO NOT PLACE GREASE IN THE VALVE BODY; REPLACE THE VALVE IF THERE ARE ANY INDICATIONS OF MOISTURE OR FOREIGN MATTER IN THE VALVE. 8. Corroion or leakage at container connection: Check container to valve connection uing Marhall Excelior leak detector olution. REPLACE THE VALVE IF THERE IS ANY INDICATION OF CORROSION OR LEAKAGE AT THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE VALVE AND CONTAINER. Thee failure to function properly are due primarily to four environmental condition: 1. Corroion of metal part (particularly pring) which reult in the component part failing to perform. 2. Deterioration of ynthetic rubber eat dic material.. Clogging or cementing of the movable relief valve component o that their movement i retricted. 4. Debri on the valve eat after the relief valve open, effectively preventing the valve from reealing. Corroion i caued by water, corroive atmophere of alt and high indutrial pollutant, chemical, and contaminant. High concentration can attack the metal part vigorouly. No uitable metal are totally reitant to uch corroion. Synthetic rubber and eat dic material can alo be attacked by impuritie in the ga and corroive atmophere, particularly thoe with ulphur dioxide. There are no uitable rubber material which reit all contaminant. Cementing of relief valve part can be caued by normal indutrial atmophere containing particle of dirt, iron oxide, metal chip, etc. combined with water, oil, or greae. Ice collecting in receed valve could caue failure to open. Paint and tar in relief valve alo caue failure to function properly. CAUTION: Never plug the outlet of a preure relief valve. Any device ued to top the flow of a properly operating preure relief valve that i venting an over preurized container can caue evere conequence. Replacement of Preure Relief Valve WARNING: Under normal condition, the ueful afe ervice life of a preure relief valve i 10 year from the original date of manufacture. However, the afe ueful life of the valve may be hortened and replacement required in le than 10 year depending on the environment in which the valve live. Inpection and maintenance of preure relief valve i very important. Failure to properly inpect and maintain preure relief valve could reult in peronal injurie or property damage. The afe ueful life of preure relief valve can vary greatly depending on the environment in which they live. Relief valve are required to function under widely varying condition. Corroion, aging of the reilient eat dic and friction all proceed at different rate depending upon the nature of the pecific environment and application. Ga impuritie, product miue and improper intallation can horten the afe life of a relief valve. The LP-Ga dealer mut oberve and determine the afe ueful life of relief valve in hi ytem. NFPA # 59, LP-Gae and Utility Ga Plant Repair and Teting Relief Valve Safety Information MEC Preure Relief Valve are teted and lited by Underwriter Laboratorie, Inc., in accordance with UL 12 and NFPA Code #58. Contruction and performance of MEC Preure Relief Valve are conitently checked at the factory by UL audit. Therefore, teting of MEC Preure Relief Valve in the field i not neceary. WARNING: Never attempt to repair or change the etting of MEC Preure Relief Valve. Any change in etting or repair in the field will void the MEC warranty and product liting, and may create a eriou hazard. While the functioning of a preure relief valve appear to be relatively imple, the aembly and tet procedure ued to manufacture thee MEC product i rather complex. Highly pecialized tet fixture and pecially trained peronnel are neceary to attain proper relief valve etting. Thee fixture and peronnel are available only at the factory. Any preure relief valve which how evidence of leakage, other improper operation or i upect a to it performance mut be replaced immediately uing approved procedure. Relief valve in ervice beyond their ervice life can exhibit the following degradation in function: They may leak at preure below the et preure. They may open and fail to properly reeat.
