Also used as a feedstock for production of a variety of nitrogen containing products and in some cleaning fluids. 2 2 Section 3 Hazard Identification Emergency overview: This product is corrosive and an inhalation hazard that may be fatal in high concentrations. Liquid ammonia can cause severe frostbite and permanent skin damage upon contact. Ammonia gas can cause respiratory and eye damage. Personal protective clothing and a full-face respirator are required when working with this product. Contact with ammonia requires immediate flushing with water and seek medical attention. Additional information is available in first aid section. Primary Routes of Entry: Ingestion, Skin Contact, Eye Contact Section 4 First Aid Measures FIRST AID PROCEDURES WHEN: In Contact With Eyes: In Contact With Skin: Flush immediately, including under eyelids, for 15 minutes minimum. Seek medical attention. Quick action is critical to minimizing the risk of blindness. Flood affected areas with water. Once the area has thawed, carefully remove contaminated clothing. Contact with liquid ammonia will lead to clothing freezing to exposed skin. Seek medical attention. Inhaled: Remove victim to fresh air. Support breathing as required. 100% oxygen may be required, administered by a qualified personnel. Seek medical attention. Ingested: Give large quantities of water to dilute. Excessive amounts may lead to vomiting. Seek medical attention.

3 3 Section 5 Fire Fighting Measures Flash Point: Flammability: Auto ignition Point: LEL: UEL: Extinguishing media: Not Applicable, Gas at room temperature Flammable 651 o C at 1 atm 16% v/v 25% v/v A water spray is recommended, but all extinguishing media are acceptable (water, CO 2, dry chemical, and foam.) Special Fire Fighting Procedures: Explosive Data: Gas flow should be stopped. Full protective equipment and a full-face NIOSH approved self-contained breathing apparatus should be worn as well as full protective clothing, a one or twopiece chemical suit. Containers exposed to fire should be kept cool with water. Avoid putting water directly on the ammonia spill, as this will increase the formation of ammonia vapors. Oil and combustible materials present will increase the fire hazard. Pure ammonia does not readily ignite, but ammonia-air mixtures can be more explosive between the explosive limits listed above. Section 6 Accidental Release Measures Workers should always wear full protective clothing, a one or two piece chemical suit and self-contained breathing apparatus in unknown concentrations on ammonia. Approach the spill from upwind, and stop the flow of gas as soon as possible. Keep unprotected persons away from the spill area. Eliminate all sources of ignition. Use natural or positive pressure ventilation to disperse the vapors, in extreme cases use a water spray to knock down the ammonia vapors. Do not spray water directly on the spilled ammonia. If possible, dike the spill to control the area of contamination. Contact the manufacturer.

4 4 Section 7 Handling and Storage Storage: Handling Procedures and Equipment: Section 8 Store cylinders or tanks in a cool, well-ventilated area away from oxidizing agents, combustible materials, ignition sources, incompatible materials and protect from mechanical damage. Storage outdoors is recommended. Workers must be trained in the handling of ammonia. Copper, copper bearing alloys such as brass, and bronze and galvanized steel are not suitable for handling ammonia. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection Ventilation: Eye Protection: Local exhaust systems are required for adequate ventilation. Explosion proof motors are recommended with all ammonia vapor ventilation systems. Full face respirator is required whenever ammonia is handled. Goggles should be worn where there is the likelihood of exposure. Respiratory Protection: Skin Protection: Other Precautions: A full face NIOSH approved ammonia cartridge type respirators can be used up to 300 ppm ammonia. Above this level, self-contained breathing apparatus must be used. For smaller spills, ammonia resistant clothing, a one or two-piece chemical suit should be used to prevent skin contact. Neoprene gloves should be worn for any direct handling of ammonia. Level A clothing (full encapsulating suit) should be used when handling large spills or vapour clouds. Safety showers and eyewashes should be employed at facilities for handling ammonia. At remote locations, an eyewash bottle and 200-gallon emergency water tanks, maintained at a temperature above freezing, is a minimum requirement. EXPOSURE LIMITS: OSHA PEL 15 min. Ammonia is an alkaline gas that gives off heat when mixed with acids. Contact with chlorine gas or chlorine bleach can cause evolution of hazardous chloramine gas. Avoid contact with strong oxidizers, mercury, silver and hypochlorite. Ammonia is easy absorbed in water to evolve great amounts of heat and an ammonia vapor cloud. Hazardous products Thermal oxidation of ammonium can produce toxic fumes of of decomposition: ammonia and nitrogen oxides (NO x ).

EFFECTS OF EXPOSURE WHEN: In Contact with Eyes: Inhaled: In Contact with Skin: ppm eye irritation 700 ppm eye irritation and tearing ppm produces eye damage 100 ppm causes nasal irritation. 400 ppm immediate throat irritation is life threatening after ½ hour Mortality Contact with gas will cause severe burning pain and corrosive damage.
