Scrims or fabrics based on viscose, polyester, polypropylene, polyethelene, polyurethane, nylon, cotton and bonded glass fibre may also be incorporated. 3) Hazards Identification The products are not considered a health hazard. Further processing, such as cutting and slitting may produce a nuisance dust. The HSE Guidance Note EH40 gives an occupational exposure standard for dusts of 10mg per m³ for non respirable dusts and 5mg per m³ for respirable dusts. All fibres are coated with a small amount of finish (nominally 0.3%) to aid processing. The finishes are of a very low order of toxity and are not expected to present a hazard by skin contact or ingestion. Processes involving temperatures above 140 C may evolve fumes from the decomposition of the finishes, which should be removed from the work area by an extractor system..

2 4) First Aid Measures EYES: Any material entering the eyes should be removed immediately by washing out with suitable eye wash solution or plenty of fresh, cold water. If any discomfort persists seek medical attention. Any irritation or rash should be reported immediately and medical attention sought. INHALATION: In the event of over exposure to fumes evolved from heat processes, remove affected person to fresh air and seek medical attention. INGESTION: No serious effects are expected if ingested. 5) Flammable Properties The fibre products exhibit varying degrees of resistance to ignition from small flame resources. However, most will burn when involved in fires. A high standard of general fire precautions, including adequate means of escape are therefore most important. A full assessment should be carried out to include all the circumstances under which the products are stored or used, and the level of fire precautions are appropriate. Guidance on this is given in HSE publication HS(G)64 Assessment of fire hazards from solid materials and the precautions required for their safe storage and use. Tests in accordance with HS(G)64 have shown that polyester wadding can fall into both of the high hazard categories of a high rate of vent temperature rise and a high total volume of smoke production when the material is stored in packaged state. HS(G)64 recommends that high hazard materials should be stored in a way that ensures safety, so far is reasonably practicable. Ideally, these materials should be stored in a separate building or in a 30 minutes of fire resisting construction. Supplementary information can be obtained through the local Health and Safety Executive. Extinguishing agents to be used in case of fire are carbon dioxide, water, dry powder and foam. Persons attempting to fight fires involving fibre products should wear self contained breathing apparatus and suitable protective clothing. Any fire certificate issued under the Fire Precautions Act 1971 will specify the means for fighting and giving warnings of fire, and for ensuring that the means of escape from the premises are safe and effective in case of fire..

3 SOURCES OF IGNITION a) Smoking In premises where fibre products are stored or used, smoking should be strictly controlled. Smoking should not be permitted in work and storage areas and only allowed in designated areas, remote from highly flammable materials. b) Naked flame - Any naked flame is a potential source of ignition and should not be permitted in work or storage areas, other than in connection with properly controlled manufacturing processes. Welding and cutting equipment which involves the application of heat should only be used under strictly controlled conditions, such as a permit to work system, and all combustible materials removed from the immediate area before work commences. c) Electrical Equipment - Protection of the electrical installation is recommended to reduce the risk of fire from an electrical flash. d) Space Heaters - Portable direct gas or oil fired heating appliances should not be used. 6) Accidental Release Measures 7) Handling and Storage The abrasive nature of some of the products may give rise to skin irritation with sensitive individuals. In such cases suitable protective gloves should be warn. When opening bags and handling, static discharge may be experienced and care should be taken to avoid static build up. Fibres and polythene bags on the floor should be removed immediately to avoid slipping and tripping hazards. All offcuts, scrap and waste should be cleared up and removed at frequent intervals and taken to a safe place or to a container within a fire - separated area. Product stable under normal conditions. The material is ecologically neutral. 12) Ecological Information Polyester fibres are generally considered biologically inert With a very low UV degradability. Antimony acts as a catalyst in the initial polymerization process for the manufacture of the polymer. A quantity is lost throughout processing but on average 200 parts per million remain. Because antimony is not utilized by the body it is easily detected as a waste product. 2) PHOSPHORUS Contains up to 250 parts per million. Phosphorus is used as a stabiliser in the polymerization process. 3) ARSENIC Arsenic is not detectable. 4) OTHER INFORMATION * The Penarth Research Laboratory tests that are currently being carried out,involving the inoculation of the fungi scopulariopsis brevicaulis on polyester have proved negative. * Polyester fibre meets current UK and European legislation for Safety of Toys: BS5665 and EN71. This standard addresses the leaching/migration of antimony and arsenic when licked, sucked and digested. * Polyester is widely used in other critical end uses such as medical (e.g sutures, implants) and food/ drink packaging.
