11 Child Lung Ventilation & Compression The monitor is designed to perform as follows: When the Child switch is toggled up on the Child Lay position the ventilation cycles are two (2) ventilations followed by thirty (30) compressions. When the Child switch is toggle down on the Child Expert position the ventilation cycles are two (2) ventilations followed by fifteen (15) compressions. Note: When switching from Child Lay to Child Expert or vice-versa you need to switch the Coach-Reset switch from Coach to Reset and back to Coach. Changes will not be effective unless this action is performed When initiating the unit in Coach Mode, the monitor will provide two low tone beeps followed by the corresponding compression. On the second and following cycles, the monitor will provide the correct ventilation tone or tones, followed by the correct compression tones Infant Lung Ventilation & Compression The monitor is designed to perform cycles as: one (1) ventilation followed by five (5) compressions. The Infant switch provides the same amount of ventilations and compressions per cycle, whether in the toggle up or down position. Note: The Infant switch provides the same amount of ventilations and compressions per cycle, whether in the toggle up or down position. When initiating the unit in Coach Mode, the monitor will provide two low tone beeps followed by the corresponding compression. On the second and following cycles, the monitor will provide the correct ventilation tone or tones, followed by the correct compression tones Training: Select the Coach/Reset switch to Coach, and turn on the monitor. The student will immediately see coaching lights and hear pitched tones. Once the student is familiar with the CPR sequence, the instructor should teach the proper amount of lung inflation and chest compression. Ask the student to ventilate the lungs. Now, ask the student to compress the chest. Copyright 2010 by Gaumard Scientific. All rights reserved. 11

12 NOTES: 1. The Code Blue I Life Monitoring System available with the simulator is programmed to be used with Adult, Child or Infant simulators. Newborns use the Infant model. 2. Both the cycle and the timing of CPR for Adult, Child and Infant model are different. 3. When changing modes, always switch from Coach to Reset and back to Coach. This resets the electronics and starts the timing sequence. 4. While teaching the correct amount of lung inflation or chest compression, the instructor may elect to turn off the Tone and Light Option by switching to Reset. In this mode, the student can practice proper ventilation or chest compression by monitoring progress on the bar graph. Remember to stay in the green range. 5. Insufficient chest compression will cause the bar graph to illuminate only in the yellow range. Too much compression will register in the red range, and may damage the patient s ribs. Stay in the green range for both ventilations and compressions. 6. The Code Blue Life Monitoring System is powered by a conventional 9-volt battery. Note that the Low Battery indicator is next to the Power Switch. Remember to turn power off when monitor not in use. 12 Copyright 2010 by Gaumard Scientific. All rights reserved.

15 III. Arteries, Veins and Injection Sites A. Arteries The S310 and S311 CPR Simon include left and right carotid arteries as well as right femoral artery. Carotid Pulse: The carotid arteries supply blood to the head and neck. You can feel the pulse of the common carotid artery by taking two fingers, preferably the 2 nd and 3 rd finger, and running them alongside the outer edge of your trachea. Femoral Pulse: The femoral artery carries blood to parts of the leg. Aside from the carotid artery, it is another common site to check for a pulse in an emergency situation. Think of an imaginary line running from your hip to the groin. The approximate superficial location of the femoral artery is 2/3 of the way in from the hip. B. Veins The S310 and S311 CPR Simon include a right femoral vein, located near the right femoral artery to assist students in location of artery vs. vein exercises C. Intramuscular Injection Sites When selecting and intramuscular site, you must determine if the area is free of pain, infection, necrosis, bruising, and abrasions. Also consider the location of underlying bones, nerves and major blood vessels and the volume of medication to be given. The S310 and S311provides: Deltoid intramuscular Injection sites on both right and left upper arm. Vastus Lateralis muscle Injection site on the right upper thigh. Left gluteus medius muscle, which is also known as the ventrogluteal site. Injection should be administered on the upper, outer quadrant of the buttock. Copyright 2010 by Gaumard Scientific.
